Today we're doing something a little different at the Inkwell, and we hope it's something you'll enjoy. Welcome to
An Inky Day of Prayer. We'd like to talk about prayer, share some of our thoughts and favorite verses with you, and then we'd like to pray.
Debra:
I think I have two kinds of prayer.
First –
‘okay, let me dial in’: “Lord?” I wait until the phone rings and I know I have a connection.
“It’s me …" This is usually when I’m praying aloud, especially in the company of others.
Then I jump to the
“I need help for me”, “I ask this for someone else”, or the just plain
“thank you Father God” type of prayer. This is often a reaffirming prayer for my own benefit, though I intend it to please Him.
Second –
‘He’s right next to me so I’m just going to start talking to Him and well, He can hear my thoughts anyway. I’ve got a ‘live connection’: These are the unsaid, but still heard, kind of prayers. My modus operandi.
PSALMS 139: 1-6“O Lord, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. You hem me in, behind and before, and lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me; it is high; I cannot attain it.”
I chose this verse because it reminds me of the personal nature of God. Nothing about me surprises Him and in spite of what is probably very disappointing about me, He chooses to love me anyway, listen to me and protect me. The older I get the more comfortable I’ve become with the truth of His Grace. My Lord has made it possible for me to go right up to the throne of God. Pretty cool.

Gina:
A week ago today I arrived in Colonial Willamsburg with my son's phone and no idea how to answer it if someone called. Nor could I call out. I'm not incompetent. His phone was mostly broken (not to be confused with mostly dead). The ladies I was meeting weren't at their vehicle so I hurried to the ticket office. Nope, not there either. I considered panicking, but, eh, I'm not really a panicker. I am a prayer-er. Trust me, Jesus has come to my rescue numerous times. Maybe my reason for not wanting my own mobile phone is because then I'd have something to rely on instead of Jesus. Well, I started praying while holding son's phone in front of me and randomly touching the screen. "Oh, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, I really need to find Carrie and Laurie. Lead me to them or make this phone work. Either way, I know You aren't going to leave me lost here in Colonial Williamsburg. I trust You to help me. " Lo and behold, the phone rang AND I managed to answer it. How? Jesus turned it on. I truly believe that.
When I hung up, I muttered, "Praise You, Jesus. I knew You'd do it," just as I was passing a colonial reenactor. She said, "Amen!" I smiled. She smiled. It was a good day indeed.
1 John 5:14-15 "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him."
I'm not the world's greatest prayer-er. But I
know God wants to meet my needs and I
know He will provide, even as insignificant as finding me a parking space. I want to give God the opportunity to remind me He is God and He cares about me. And He cares about coming to your rescue too.

Lisa:
So often I find my prayer time clogged with petitions and worries, and there’s nothing wrong with taking my concerns to the Lord. The problem is that I rarely sit around and wait for the answer. I forget that prayer is supposed to be a two-way conversation, and once I’ve finished with my agenda, I hit the road.
Lately though, Isaiah 40:31 has been playing through my mind over and over: “but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles;
they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Used to be I thought that meant I had to wait on the Lord’s leading in life. (Which it probably does on one level.) But it could also mean that we need to snatch those quiet moments to be alone with him. To listen for his voice and give him a chance to renew our strength. He’ll equip us for the battles we have to face if we let him. Like David we can choose to reject Saul’s bulky armor and go in the power of the Lord’s name. I know which one I want to do if I stop and think about it. ~~Lisa Karon Richardson
Susanne:
These are my favorite verses on prayer. They remind me how thoroughly God loves me, how much He cares about what's going on in my life, and what a privilege it is to come to Him with my requests.
Philippians 4:6b "But in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, presents your requests to God."
1 Peter 5:7 "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you."
Matthew 7:7-11 "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.
"Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!"
Mark 10:27 "Jesus looked at them and said, 'With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.'" ~~ Susanne Dietze
Suzie:
Sometimes news about world-wide events can be so overwhelming it seems like a never-ending onslaught. Combine that with personal struggles, and it becomes easy to feel discouraged.
For some people, once they’re discouraged, it’s difficult to take a step back and center their focus on God. And often, when inundated with bad news, people are reluctant to ask for prayers. I’ve heard more than one person say they don’t bring their own troubles to God when they pray because their issues are insignificant compared to things happening around them.
Are we selling God short by not taking our troubles to Him? If we don’t believe the events in our lives are important to Him, how can we believe anything else about Him? What about us? Are we selling ourselves short as well?
My friend, Marianne who leads our Women’s Bible Study, searched the Bible for the word
strong. She found an extensive list of nineteen scriptures with
strong. Oftentimes it appeared with another word – as in:
“Be strong and courageous…”
Exodus 14:13-14 was also on her list. But it doesn’t use those words. Instead it says:
“Do not be afraid. Stand firm. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
Standing firm, being still, requires both strength and courage. But if we’re overwhelmed and discouraged, how can we be strong and brave?
In some of those scriptures, God makes a promise to us:
“Be strong and courageous….and I myself will be with you.”
God will arm us with everything we need to press forward.
He will be with us.

Before we’ve even asked Him, God has promised to be with us. He obviously cares about the things that hurt us or make us sad or fearful. He wants to hear from us, love us, to restore our souls and fill us with a sense of His perfect peace. Then we will have the strength and courage we need in order to stand firm in the face of adversity.
I love the title for our Friday posts:
Just a Little More Rope for the Climb. To me, it is simply inspired. My prayer today is that everyone reading this will evaluate their prayer-time with our Heavenly Father, and come to view it as the thickest, strongest rope for our climb on this earth.
How strong is your rope?

If there’s anything, or anyone, you'd like to pray for, feel free to post either your prayer or your prayer request in the comments section. Of course, you’re welcome to post anonymously if you wish. We’ll be happy to pray for and with you.
Japan in the midst of devastation, Haiti still trying to rebuild from the devastation over a year ago, wars and uncertainty the Middle East... there are so many other world situations, so feel free to add them if you wish, but please don’t let the enormity of them keep you from asking for prayers on your own behalf. God wants to hear from you about these big situations, of course. But remember, He also wants to hear from you about
you.
