Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens… or so the song
goes. Julie Andrews sang about her favorite things in a delightful little
song-and-dance number. When I think of my favorite things, certainly curling up
in an overstuffed chair--reading, of course--ranks right up there. I also enjoy
writing, spending time on Facebook, playing Scrabble online, and watching good
movies--especially old musicals. And I sing along--loudly.
Notice anything these activities have in common?
They're all
pretty much sedentary. Pair that with some unhealthy affections for food (and
some affection for unhealthy food) and I'll be the first to admit, it's become a
serious problem.
Again.
And yes, it's been a life-long struggle.
Again.
And yes, it's been a life-long struggle.
But one thing about a struggle--it's better to keep on
struggling, than to give in. So off I go on another attempt to battle this
issue of weight and exercise.
Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, Philippians 3:13
The latest front in the battle?
Trying to find a way to keep
moving while doing these sedentary things. And I'll give you a hint--this is not the way:
One pleasant discovery, made about a month ago, was that my
new, thinner laptop fits securely in the book rack of my recumbent exercise
bike. While absorbed in a bit of editing
the other day, I pedaled for what I thought was about fifteen minutes. I was disappointed that my legs would be tired
after so little time. A look at the clock revealed I had actually pedaled away
for over an hour while absorbed in what I was working on.
And then I looked wistfully at the treadmill. (And it's not often that I look wistfully at the treadmill) I'd heard of
treadmill desks before, and even Googled them. And while their promise of taking
off pounds while walking slowly (less than 1 mph) while working appealed to me,
I found the price tag (often running in the hundreds or thousands) to be
prohibitive.
And then I remembered--I have a degree in engineering. Duh!
So I took a look at the treadmill, and then a trip to the
hardware store. And here's what I came up with:

Question. What are some of your favorite things? How can you
incorporate more exercise into them?
Barbara Early grew up buried in the snowy suburbs of Buffalo, NY, where she developed a love for all things sedentary: reading, writing, classic movies, and facebook scrabble. She holds a degree in Electrical Engineering, but her penchant for the creative caused her to run away screaming from the pocket-protector set. Barbara cooks up cozy mysteries with a healthy dose of comedy and sometimes a splash of romance. Her holiday novella, Gold, Frankincense, and Murder will be released from White Rose Publishing in time for the holiday season.
