Here Come the Crawleys - Downton Abbey S4

For the second time, I've had the chance to see the first hour of the new Downton Abbey season on the big screen and ahead of schedule! If you haven't caught up on seasons one through three, what are you waiting for? Go watch and come back later.

Now, I know that I could easily go online and watch these shows already broadcast in the UK, but part of the fun is to watch it  (alone) 'with' the rest of the east coast (choose your time zone, North America...)  There's something about sitting down with Masterpiece Theater and waiting with the rest of the DA fans! In less than one week, we'll be inside the new season.

Fans of Downton may have already seen that trailer and even if you haven't, it should be no surprise that much of the first hour walks us through our grieving process. (Please tell me this is a not a spoiler for you--Matthew is dead)

Random thoughts in no particular order:

Mrs. Hughes has a new hairstyle. If Mrs. Hughes ever leaves this show I will cry.
The Ivy/ Daisy/ Jimmy/ Alfred romance wheel is still spinning and I want to slap Jimmy across his cute little fair-faced cheek.

Robert seems to have settled into a new rut - all that talk of 'new world' has vanished out of his head. Ugh. Cora might have to go all 'American' on him again.

The Dowager's tongue is a tad less sharp - or maybe she's just mellowing out after so much heartbreak

The Dowager and Mrs. Patmore still have the best lines in the show

There's a change in lady's maids that promises lots of trouble. And we like trouble.

I only cried three times. Keep track and let me know how you do.

I absolutely loved the clothes!

You'll have at least one big surprise by the end of the first hour.

Thomas is back in true form. All is well in the world.

No doggie butt to start the show? will it return or is it a thing of the past? What about the DA theme that makes us start salivating like a Pavlovian dog?

An old character comes back.  No it's not Patrick!

It's great to be back to Downton!

What do you look forward to the most?

If you had editorial override, what would you make sure happened by the end of Season Four?

PS - while I'm at it I might as well remind you of my post  LUNCH WITH ALASTAIR BRUCE from DOWNTON ABBEY.

  1. I'm looking forward to seeing what kind of trouble Cousin Rose will cook up. I think I'm most intrigued by her. And of course I'm looking forward to Daisy, Anna, and the rest of the downstairs gang, along with the Violetisms - or should that be the Dowagerisms? I'm glad you got to go to the viewing again, Deb.

    1. Cousin Rose stirs up trouble in the first half hour and it's not what you'd expect.

I also have to say again that the clothes are outstanding this season. (except for one dress on Rose... I wonder if anyone will know which one I'm talking about)

    2. Blogger ate my comment. :(

I think I said: Ooh, I can't wait to see what she does! And the clothes... I'm so looking forward to the clothes. I'm sure I'll be able to figure out which dress you don't like.

    3. Edith is truly lovely and her clothes are the best. of course Mary is in black and conservative and Sybil's gone. Love suits Edith but will she have her happy ending? it's been 10 years since 'she would have married Patrick'...

  2. Of course the entire audience went Ahhhh, when baby George comes in his first scene. A right plump thing he is too!

  3. LOL. Love your Downton themed bio pic today!
I'm hoping since I'm not recovering from surgery now I won't find myself blubbering through the new season the way I blubbered through the first three. Doing them in 72 hours was probably a bit of overkill.

    1. No, I think it won't get any better (the crying) I blame it on being a mother and grandmother.

Jan will rock. Downton Outlander Sherlock. What's a gal to do?

  4. Yay!! Can't wait for it to start. Thanks for the preview.

    1. Well, it wasn't much. No major story lines started just a lot of new seeds for them. The biggest focus was on Mary's adjustment. I can't wait for hour two!

  5. Hooray! I am so excited! I do hope Edith gets some happiness of a romantic nature. And that love quadrangle is a little, well, not my favorite compared to plot threads that involve, say, Tom.

Is it wrong that I'm still mad at Dan Stevens? Because I am. How dare he leave DA and have his own life.

    Thanks for the report!

    1. I am okay with Dan leaving. I'm not sure what he's doing now but his theater performance and his movie didn't seem to be blockbuster hits. I think he needs to do something completely unexpected and outside of the Edwardian era!

Personally I agree that if he was there now there'e be little room for story growth without them having major fights. Mary's story can go really big now as she starts over. And having a nice fiery foil for Mary will be nice. Matthew was good for Mary but she's going to need someone who comes in on equal footing and can hold his own against her manipulations.

or maybe it's just that Tom Cullen is cute?
