What a Difference a Key Makes

What do you think of this re-imagining of the Star Spangled Banner? Singer/Songwriter Chase Holfelder sings it in a minor key.  (No, the title of the post wasn't a spin on the author of the poem, Francis Scott Key, but I guess it works)

For me, it is just as stirring but reflects more of the struggle and loss involved in the trials of our young nation 200 years ago.

  2. Forgot to mention that after hearing this it makes more sense to me that this was a popular barroom song. Much more like a very white version of the blues.

  3. I actually like it better, although it is admittedly less triumphant.

  4. I agree - it fascinates me. And he does a marvelous job with a tough range. I wonder how this would be received at a large sports event.

  5. Play ball!

Sorry. I hope that doesn't seem disrespectful, but I always say that after the Star Spangled Banner, because that's the only place I hear it anymore and it gets me in a really good mood.

I truly love this version. There was just one spot that didn't sound right to my ears, but I totally loved the ending. I really liked the a capella, and the way he brought himself into it.

    And the last line...goose bumps.

Thank you, Deb, for sharing this. I'm going to see what my son (who has perfect pitch) thinks of it. :)

  6. wow. i really like this version. i agree with Dina that is doesn't sound as triumphant, but i feel like i connect a little more with this version. perhaps with how much i intereact with military folk, this version resonates more.

i hope this guy gets a lot of views. he's got an awesome voice.

    thanks for sharing this.
