CODE OF COURAGE by Janice Cantore, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"Lady Justice is blindfolded for a reason. Justice is for everyone or it's for no one. As soon as we start deciding who deserves what and why, we've stepped out of uniform and crossed a line."

Confused and discouraged, Danni Grace is ready to give up the profession that she once thought was her calling. Injured during a protest turned violent, Danni steps away in order to evaluate a lot of things; not only her job as a detective, but a another decision that she now regrets; breaking ties with her husband. Why, after two years of separation, had he shown up at the hospital to check on her?

As an investigator for La Rosa's city prosecutor's office, Gabriel Fox becomes involved in the incidents that surround his ex-wife's injury. When matters escalate once again following an officer involved shooting, Gabriel's defense of the officer lands him back at a desk job pushing papers . . . on cold case files, one of which snags his undivided attention. What were the chances? And what were the chances that his re-entry into Danni's life is for a reason that even his non-religious mind cannot ignore?

Written with a polished inside perspective on the role of local police officers within a community, this story is both enlightening and sobering as it dissects what can happen, and sadly is happening, when boundaries are removed and citizens, as well as those sworn to protect them, are left defenseless. On a deeper level though, it's a really sweet look at the path of reconciliation between two people who were never meant to be alone. Plus . . . it's a great crime story; I certainly couldn't fit all the pieces back together. Can you?

"You might be surprised at how easy your other decisions are once your relationship with God is straightened out."

BackCover Blurb:
Detective Danni Grace has never met a police officer who wants to face a scenario where pulling the trigger on another person is the only option. When the worst does occur and there’s a police-involved shooting, it leads to riots and calls to disband the entire police force in La Rosa, Danni’s hometown.

After fifteen years on the force, Danni has had enough. Injured in the line of duty when a protester throws a chunk of concrete at her and shaken by the vitriol being shown to the police, Danni realizes for the first time that she’s lost her passion for the job.

While she’s on a leave of absence, though, a community activist in La Rosa is shot and a fellow officer is blamed for his murder. Taking on this case means stepping back into a job Danni’s not sure she can do anymore . . . and working closely with her ex-husband, Gabriel Fox, an investigator for the city prosecutor’s office. Danni will need to tap into her code of courage to uncover the truth, prevent another injustice, and uphold her oath to serve and protect.
