"Things were worse than she thought."
Following the death of their beloved stepfather, Charlotte Fieldstone and her two sisters appear to be not only penniless but also homeless following their stepbrother's demand they vacate Piping's Cross within days after their father's passing. Shortly before he died, Josiah Fleming had pressed an antique medal into Charlotte's hands, with directions for where to locate a second, making her promise to hide them both with the utmost care. Curious. Very curious indeed.
Also surprising is a hasty invitation for the sisters to live at Nottingham Castle with Charlotte's heretofore unknown great uncle, a Mr. Calvin Fieldstone, the request personally delivered by the property manager, Mr. Charles Rushforth. Feeling as if this option was a blessing in disguise the young women hastily pack essential items and make the move to the enormous property that boasts a variety of residential apartments above ground and a myriad of secrets below.
At this point the story becomes as entangled as a kitten playing with a ball of yarn, and never really relaxes until the very end, and even then the outcome feels a bit tenuous. (perfectly understandable, since this book is the first in a series) Charlotte has so many questions, and the only person she considers trusting is not who you might think, but someone else entirely.
A tale with interesting shades of Gothic atmosphere and a penchant for misdirection, written within a setting that takes on a life of its own.
