PAULA'S REVIEW

Book two in the Jeopardy Falls series has Riley MacLeod and Grayson Chadwick teaming up to go undercover at a couples spa retreat. With friend Kelly gone missing, they try to find the reason Kelly left the spa abruptly. More confounding is why Riley receives a key and a cryptic note.

While searching for clues, Gray and Riley find they can no longer deny the attraction growing between them, especially when they are posing as a couple. But each has baggage in their past that is putting a damper on romance. They both have a strong faith that they rely on to get them through the threatening situations and they count on their expertise as members of a private investigation team to hunt down answers, even as danger follows them.

Intense from start to finish, this was a page turner with interesting characters, a twisty plot and a sigh worthy romance.

More from Dani

Hi friends! Thanks so much for taking time out of your day to stop by and say hi. I deeply appreciated. I have loved writing Riley and Greyson’s story. They are my favorite couple since Landon and Piper in my Alaskan Courage series. She’s fiery and independent and he is smitten by her, but also fears for her safety and after you read Two Seconds Too Late, you’ll understand why. Taking them out of their regular environment and placing them as a couple at high-end spa and resort brings on the opportunity to test out their feelings for one another under the guise of playing along. It’s a close proximity, opposites attract, and fake relationship story that tugged at my heart and I hope it’ll dug at yours too.

Every time I release a new book, I get a bunch of questions, which I love. I love sharing more about the story and digging into my hope for it, so I’m sharing several of the questions I get asked most and I wanted to share the answers to them with you. Please feel free to ask any other questions in the comment section below and I’ll respond within a day. Thanks again for stopping by! I hope you enjoy reading Riley and Greyson’s adventure as much as I enjoyed writing it.

  1. What do you hope readers will take away from this book?

That despite a strong, complexed and nuanced antagonist, that light can come from the darkest places and bring peace or, at the very least, closure to not only the families of the victims but to the hero and/or heroine as well. It might not be perfect, and it certainly doesn’t fix anything, but I still believe in the hero/heroine triumphing over the villain.

2) What authors or books have influenced your career as a writer, and why?

So many. I would say my top three influencers were Sue Grafton and are Lisa Gardner and Dee Henderson. The three write very different style of stories. Sue perfect the mystery with some edgy suspense scenes. Lisa creates the best or worst, I suppose. They are a force to be reckoned with and I love her twists and surprises. And, Dee’s book are paced so well and laid out so methodically. I’ve learned something different, and continue to do so, from these three, excellent authors.

3) Which took shape first: plot, character, or setting?

To me it’s a combination of knowing the hero and heroine’s jobs. I like to think about what kind of person would do that job and how it will affect them and the story itself. I also know the setting as it’s a character its own right and adds to and affects the story overall. I also know the crime, but I don’t know who did it. I like to leave my options open to see the direction the story goes, and where the investigation leads.

4) What was the biggest challenge this book presented? What about the biggest opportunity?

The balance between what was occurring on the surface in contrast to what was simmering beneath the surface and rising up in subtext. Creating that balance and keeping things on track was interesting, but It provided the perfect opportunity to delve into the deepest part of the characters. Overall, it was tricky to strike the right balance and have the subtly rise to the surface in a natural and authentic way.

Homemade Butterscotch Recipe:
Butterscotch is Riley’s favorite candy & the bane of Greyson’s existence (you’ll see why in the book J).Ingredients:
2 ½ cup sugar
1 cup unsalted butter
1/3 tsp. salt
¾ cup water
½ cup molasses
¼ cup honey
1 tsp. Vanilla extract
And a little sea salt for an added touch.
Directions:
Put ingredients in pan. Cook mixture to 250 degrees.
Pour into a lined pan with parchment paper and leave it alone.
Sprinkle some sea salt if you’d like.
Let it sit overnight.
Cut it up into squares (a pizza cutter works great) and store in fridge.

THE LIGHT ON HORN ISLAND by Valerie Fraser Leusse, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

Southern Women's Fiction about Community, Sisterhood,
and Self-Discovery Set in Mississippi

PAULA'S REVIEW:

This novel exudes enough southern charm that I want to sit down at the table with Punk, Edie and the TenSpots and fill up on grits and shrimp, mud pie and sweet tea. You could feel the humidity of the Mississippi summer and the cooling breeze coming off the gulf.

The story takes place in 2002 and has Edie going back to Bayou de Chene to her grandmother Punk and a new job preparing photos and archiving stories about Hurricane Camille in Beloxi.

Second chance romance, grieving a loved one and encountering a mysterious light on Horn Island makes for an absorbing story, not to mention God appointed occurrences that could not be described as mere coincidence.

Ms. Leusse always provides a unique and relevant story of family, faith and life lessons. If you like southern fiction, immerse yourself in this wonderful story of love lost and found and friendship that lasts for a lifetime.

Just when her life comes crumbling down, she discovers secrets that could shape her future--and heal her past.

When Edie Gardner's life in New York falls apart, her grandmother Adele "Punk" Cheramie coaxes her back to tiny Bayou du ChĂȘne, Mississippi. Edie spent many happy summers there, a stone's throw from untamed Horn Island, where she once found love. Can she now demystify the island's strange new light?

Punk and her colorful friends introduce Edie to the Trove, a fascinating gallery and antique shop. Like Horn Island's light, The Trove has appeared out of nowhere. Its proprietor, with a gift for discerning his customers' needs, gives Edie a Victorian parlor game that asks players a series of personal questions, which is harmless fun at first. But Edie and her grandmother's circle find that the game has a way of uncovering secrets, including a heartbreak that has haunted one of the women for decades. Banding together, this Southern sisterhood is determined to find answers that will bring healing, hope, and happiness--and maybe explain the transcendent illumination of a wild and windswept barrier island.

Mackinac Cottages Series Book 3

PAULA'S REVIEW:

I always love returning to Mackinac Island through the stories of Ms. Pagels. She makes me reflect on the time I visited, albeit a long time ago. It is just so fun to read these stories.
I appreciate the pronunciation guide and character list at the beginning so that I can refresh my memory about the family connections.

Alyssa and Sammy captured my heart from the first page and I enjoyed Alyssa’s compulsion to provide for her son. I was glad to see Carter striving to take care of baby Kelsey and prioritizing his mental health after a crisis.

From the interaction between Alyssa and Carter, it was clear to see they were interested in each other but wanted to take it slow and be sure.

The plot was creative and informative about relevant issues. The supporting characters were well drawn and added to the family dynamic. Many were Christians who lived out their faith transparently.

I look forward to another trip to Mackinac to soak up the atmosphere and catch up on what everyone is doing.

TWO SECONDS TOO LATE by Dani Pettrey, Reviewed by Kim #NewRelease

A Forced Proximity Romantic Suspense Thriller Book Set in New Mexico

KIM'S REVIEW:
Two Seconds Too Late is packed with romance, suspense, and nonstop action that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the very last page. Dani Pettrey delivers a gripping story with plenty of twists and turns, all wrapped up in a sweet, heartfelt romance.

I really enjoyed the dynamic between Riley and Greyson. The fake dating trope is always a fun one, but what made it really work here was the deep friendship and feelings that were already between them. Watching their relationship grow as they faced both danger and personal struggles—and supported each other through them—was my favorite part of the story.

The plot was intricate and twisty, and the pacing of the action was spot on. I also loved the strong group dynamics; the bonds between the characters added an extra layer of warmth to the story. After the hints in this book, I’m already looking forward to book three!

Although Two Seconds Too Late is the second installment in the Jeopardy Falls series, it easily reads well on its own. That said, I’m definitely going back to read the first book while I wait (impatiently!) for the next one.

EVERY DEADLY SUSPICION By Janice Cantore, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"I took the path God had for me. It seems wrong and sad and hard, but God chose to be with me through it, not take me out of it."

Just when Dry Oaks, California, Chief of Police Hanna Keyes thought her plate could not get piled up any higher . . . it does. After eye-witnessing a private plane crash, Hanna learns the pilot may have been dead or dying before his plane ever hit the ground. Unrelated to the crash, a killer lurks in the shadows, luring women to their death after scamming them out of money through an online dating site. The most personal unexpected situation was one that Hanna never thought possible, a reason to meet her father . . . a convicted killer, Joe Keyes had been incarcerated her entire life, and now he was dying. Oh yes, and then there was Jared, her first love was back in town.

Rife with multiple characters and competing story threads, both past and present, it took numerous chapters to settle in and prioritize what was really happening in the small community of Dry Oaks. As significant indicators surface, the storyteller's ingenuity emerges, revealing the power of the truth, with one final unexpected twist.

Suspicion reigns supreme in this inspirational suspense!

ERIN DELANEY MYSTERIES #1

"The angels took her away, boy. We cannot contend with heaven. The angels know what's best."

The two women had bonded virtually and were now looking forward to spending time together in person. Erin was carrying deep emotional wounds and Kaely's keen spiritual insight urged her to speak softly but truthfully. What they never planned for? . . . a serial killer roaming Watcher Woods.

"In that moment, he made a decision. He would contend with heaven."

Local police chief Adrian Nightengale was thankful for any assistance the two seasoned specialists could provide. Both women had incredible instincts and Kaely's well respected, but rather unique method of criminal profiling was certainly a boost to the case. When horrific winter weather moves into the region, there is not a lot Adrian can do to assist in any way, they are on their own.

Incredible! This high-stakes thriller draws a myriad of emotions into hyper focus through its characters; a crazed criminal whose distortion of religious belief is dangerously demented, a young woman who has experienced enormous levels of trauma trying to salve her guilt without any spiritual dimension . . . and a courageous friend who stands in the gap, offering the Spirit of truth.

THE VOICE WE FIND by Nicole Deese, Reviewed by Winnie and Paula #NewRelease

A Fog Harbor Romance: A Forced Proximity Contemporary Romance Novel with Realistic Conflicts and Emotional Depth

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
I always jump at the chance to read a Nicole Deese book, because I know I’m in for a deep and emotionally moving tale. Her stories are never predictable, always satisfying, and full of inspiration. I love the depth of the characters. They’re carefully crafted--each with their own problems, flaws, and strengths.

The Voice We Find is one of my favorite books that Deese has written. She has obviously put much thought and careful research into the construction and development of the plot. It is full of creativity and imagination which makes for a beautiful and memorable tale. The many twists and turns kept me turning pages.

The main characters are relatable and engaging. Sophie Wilder is a musical actress with a dysfunctional family she is semi-estranged from. When her Broadway career ends in disgrace, she returns home to recuperate and regroup. August Tate owns a private recording studio who is offered a side gig as an audiobook producer. He is also guardian of his teenage sister Gabby who has a degenerative hearing loss because of an accident which killed their parents. When Sophie is hired to narrate the audiobooks, their paths collide. I loved all the witty banter between them and the way their relationship changed and grew.

Deese is a talented and gifted storyteller who obviously puts much thought into her stories. She tackles some hefty subjects with beauty and grace and emotion. Redemption, healing, forgiveness, family, faith, and hope all combine to give this story inspirational depth. It is part of her Fog Harbor series but can be read as a stand-alone book.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Bethany House Publishing via Interviews and Reviews. All opinions are my own.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I knew I was going to love this book from the dedication and verse at the beginning. It was for everyone “who has ever prayed for a prodigal’s return.” And my life verse: Romans 8:38 & 39.

Every time I read a book by this author, I know I am in for a beautiful story full of real life problems with heavenly solutions. This was such a vital look at how we see ourselves and how others see us and accept us or not. The author gives a clear Gospel message that not only how Jesus saves us but how He sees us and loves us unconditionally. How He has plans for our lives that use the gifts that He has given us. And how “God works in every circumstance in our lives. Even the hardest ones.”

I appreciated Gabby and her hearing loss and the American Sign Language aspect of the story. The peek into voicing audio books was really interesting.

Ms. Deese is not afraid to write about thorny family issues such as Sophie, August, and Gabby were facing, and offering God as the remedy.

This was another skillfully written book that offered realistic characters, a wonderful romance, family discord, supportive friends, and even a little intrigue.

GOLD DIGGER by Skylar J. Kent, Reviewed by Kim #ReleaseDay

A Chronic Illness Warrior Novel
Unconquerable Faith Series Book 1

I absolutely loved Gold Digger by Skylar J. Kent. This story sucked me in from the beginning and didn’t let me go until the last word. When I wasn’t reading it, I was thinking about Layne and Keaton and their story. Days later, I’m still thinking about this incredible book.

I don’t even know where to begin with this review, so let’s start with Layne. What a beautiful character! I absolutely adore her. She has a painful chronic illness that made me hurt for her, but she fights through it with strength, a sense of humor, and an unshakable faith in God. The faith thread in this story is beautiful! Next, Keaton, oh Keaton, I think he’s one of my all time favorite male characters. There was just something about him that drew me to him. His story is one of pain too, but emotional pain, not physical pain. I hurt for him in a totally different way. He also persevered through his trauma, but not in a good way. I loved his redemption! I loved him. Put these two together and you have magic. There’s also a great mystery thread in this story. I was completely shocked at its outcome.

This story ran me through the gamut of emotions. I loved every second of it. This was one story I was sad to see end. I could’ve kept reading about these characters and their lives. I cannot wait for the next book in this series! I am so intrigued already plus, I want to catch up with Layne and Keaton. Gold Digger jumps to one of my all time favorite reads! Skylar J. Kent is an author not to be missed!

Inventor Set in the 1900s on the Coast of England)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was an awe-inspiring book that had a mysterious mansion as a setting. With vibrant words, the author weaves a spellbinding story that packs a spiritual punch. The steampunk vibes draw you into its fantasy-like atmosphere but it is completely believable. The characters are diverse, from a pirate/butler, to grasping relatives after an inheritance, to a girl who just wants to connect with the inventor of Blakely house.

The whole mystery of inventor Emmet Sinclair, speaks to the mystery of the Creator of the Universe and all that it holds. “It is not about how, it is about Who!” Sydney reconnects with God as she comes to see His presence in the beauty of the natural world. She realizes He has had His hand on her throughout her life, even bringing Andre into it.

She no longer trusts him but he is persistent in wanting to take care of her. “So long as Noah remained in her life, there was no such thing as breathing easy.” But all is not laughs, this book deals with serious issues such as divorce and reconciliation and trusting God.

I really enjoyed this second-chance-times-two story. Not only do Gracie and Noah creep towards a renewed romance, her nephew Matt pursues his best friend Rachel in hopes of moving out of the just friends spot. Both couples were such fun to watch.

I liked the references to old songs and bookish, authorly ones too since Gracie is an author. The peek into the baseball community was informative. I could not help but remember when I lived in St. Louis and experienced baseball fever during the run at the World Series by the Cardinals.

Now to go back and read the debut by Ms Kinzer. I expect I am in for more laughs.

BackCover Blurb:
She’s a romance writer burned out on love. He’s her famous baseball star ex-husband. The last man she wants to be forced to work with is the one who broke her heart.

Rom-com writer Gracie Parker hasn’t written a bestseller since she and her husband, a major league baseball star, divorced five years ago. On thin ice with her publisher—and with a looming deadline—Gracie couldn’t have picked a worse time for a painful injury that has her flat on her back. At this point, she’d accept help from anybody . . . except her first love and ex-husband, Noah Parker.

The baseball season has just ended in massive disappointment for Noah. He’s facing the stark reality that he gave up everything for a career that’s let him down and that it might be too late to get back the one person he should’ve held on to. So when Gracie’s nephew calls, saying Gracie’s looking for a tenant for her next-door rental, it feels like it’s meant to be.

All Gracie cares about is turning in her manuscript on time, which is directly at odds with Noah’s attempts to win her back

WRITTEN IN SECRET (The Art of Love and Danger #1) by Crystal Caudill, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

THE ART OF LOVE AND DANGER SERIES Book #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW
"I wasn't flirting. I was being witty and charming. I have to test, on occasion, what my heroines say, just so I know what a man's real reaction would be."

"Everything is research. Including flirting."
. . . okaaay . . . crime novelist Lydia Pelton has just completed a first person case study in unsuccessfully evading arrest for . . . stealing a three legged goat from the circus??? In the middle of the night? Getting caught up in an actual crime scene and thwarting Officer Abraham Hall's chance to apprehend an honest to goodness thief? As ludicrous as it sounds . . . that about sums it up . . . her trip to jail, wearing trousers and face paint (posing as a clown, breaking out into hives, what were she and Theresa thinking, they weren't) . . . and best of all, being introduced to a classic version of officer "swoony".

The woman was insufferable . . . what a night. . . . "of course he had been accosted by a clown. He hated clowns." Lydia Pelton was trouble personified with those big brown eyes and unruly curls, the combination could drive a man to distraction. Fortunately, or in Abraham's case unfortunately, lurking beneath that attractive surface was a keen mind and a brilliant pen, yet unknown to Abraham, Lydia's stories were about to spawn a series of murders exactly as she had so carefully written them. Abraham Hall had not seen the last of Lydia Pelton.

Brilliant, just brilliant! Loaded with wit, charm, and carefully concealed criminal activity, this romantic mystery dissects the power of the pen while effectively revealing God's mercy and grace through two fumbling, bumbling humans who keep landing sided by side (or in some cases on top of each other, now that's a story all by itself! ) until "there is no need to write in secret anymore".

This new series is off to a grand beginning!

BackCover Blurb:
What happens when fiction becomes reality? In the corruption-infested Queen City, danger lurks in every shadow, but Lydia Pelton refuses to stay silent. She writes under a pseudonym, E. A. Dupin, crafting crime novels to exact justice and right the wrongs she sees in society. When a serial killer decides to be the sword to her pen, Lydia is confronted with the consequences of her words. Four men are dead, and the city blames her.

With murders on the rise, Officer Abraham Hall's only lead is Lydia's fiction, and he is thrust into an investigation with the "Killer Queen of Romance." Despite his misgivings about the woman, he realizes that even with his reputation for catching elusive criminals, he needs her help. But his unexpected attraction to Lydia proves as difficult to manage as the woman herself.

As the mystery unfolds, Abraham and Lydia race to rewrite the ending, not only for Cincinnati's citizens, but for their own hearts too.

PROTECTING YOU by Robin Patchen, (The Wright Heroes of Maine #5), Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Schemes and Lies in Shadow Cove (The Wright Heroes of Maine Book 5)

REBECCA'S REVIEW
"It was a shut-up kiss, she knew that. But . .. . . oh boy."

Seeing Callan Templeton again on such short notice (okay, no notice!) was a seismic shock to her system; the infuriating man was brazen enough to declare the classic endearment "darling" in front of Alyssa Wright's most prestigious client, while whispering "Go with it" into her ear. Well, that little charade certainly put a new twist on the "shut up and kiss me" scenario; something wasn't adding up, and Callan (introducing himself as Caleb) better cough up a reasonable explanation.

Such as . . . Alyssa's client was really a dangerous criminal?! After all, Callan would know, his experience as a CIA agent did give him an inside track on identifying dangerous threats. Before either of them could quite get over seeing each other again, (in college they were competitors, could they transform into teammates?) they are on the run. Alyssa has been unwittingly duped into using her cyber skills for nefarious purposes and Callan has been pulled in to a situation that puts his best kept secret in jeopardy.

"Lord, you are our only hope. Use our gifts and talents, the information we've gathered, the expertise You've given us . . . take us right there."

A classic case of forced proximity . . . on steroids, with circumstances that rapidly spiral toward the final keystroke!

One of my favorite books in this already amazing series!
*I purchased a copy and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.

BackCover Blurb:
In a high-stakes game of deception, two rivals must work together to bring down a ruthless terrorist.

After Alyssa’s dream of working in US intelligence is thwarted, she leaves her mundane profession to pursue a career as a cyber investigator. Though she aces every case she gets, securing enough customers to stay afloat proves challenging. When a lucrative commission comes along, she thinks she’s hit the jackpot. But this client isn’t the British entrepreneur he claims to be. And then her old nemesis interrupts their meeting with a startling move.

CIA agent Callan Templeton is floundering in his new role as a single father to a surprise daughter, but he still has a job to do. He follows a tip about a terrorist, only to be shocked when he finds his old college adversary dining with the notorious killer. Maybe there was a better way to step in than by posing as Alyssa’s fiancĂ©, but it was the best excuse he could come up with to insert himself into their meeting.

Callan once stole the job Alyssa coveted, and now the last thing she wants is his help. But when he explains who her client really is, she realizes she’s in way over her head. Dariush Ghazi knew exactly what he was doing when he targeted her. She’s trapped. She must go along with a dangerous scheme, pretending to help him while working with Callan…or end up dead.

In their quest to dismantle Dariush’s network of evil, Callan and Alyssa risk sacrificing each other—and everything they hold dear.
Prepare to dive into this gripping tale of enemies turned allies, a fake engagement, and a deadly conspiracy.

SUNRISE REEF by Irene Hannon, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

HOPE HARBOR NOVEL #11
Small Town Beach Contemporary Opposites Attract
Clean Romance Set in the Pacific Northwest

“A little kindness goes a long way toward smoothing rough paths and healing hearts.”

It’s always a treat to return to Hope Harbor for another of Irene Hannon’s entertaining and inspirational stories. I love the small-town camaraderie and friendships that this talented author creates and the engaging, relatable characters that populate her stories. Sunrise Reef stars spunky Bren Ryan who has finally found a place that feels like home. When CPA Noah Ward comes to town to visit his father, he doesn’t intend to stay long or to be intrigued by Bren.

As Bren and Noah get to know each other better, their relationship starts to change, but can Noah, who lives a fast-paced life in a big city, and Bren, who has found her niche in Hope Harbor, ever make things work out?

In a parallel story, kind-hearted Bren meets a struggling teenager who is stranded when her car breaks down in Hope Harbor. Emma is hoping to find a job and get guardianship of her teenage brother.

It was such fun to mingle with all the residents of Hope Harbor again and feel their support and love for each other.

Sometimes you have to look beneath the surface to find the treasure within

After years of searching, Bren Ryan has found her place in Hope Harbor. Working as a barista suits her to a T, as does the laid-back vibe of her adopted town. Nothing is lacking in her life--except romance. But that's okay. Men are a complication she doesn't need.

Buttoned-up CPA Noah Ward isn't looking for love, either, when he arrives in town on a mission to convince his father to move closer to him. And he certainly doesn't intend to fall for the quirky, free-spirited woman who's taken up residence in his father's guest cottage.

But when Noah finds himself sucked into Bren's quest to help a struggling teen, might the two of them discover there's more to each other than meets the eye?

Come home to Hope Harbor--where hearts heal . . . and love blooms.
