Gripping Romantic Thriller That Keeps You Guessing!

I’ve been reading Darlene Turner for years, so when I heard about Echoes of Darkness—her first Love Inspired Trade novel—I couldn’t wait to dive into this romantic thriller!

From the very first page, the story takes off and doesn't slow down. I was completely drawn in by Oaklynn and Caleb’s chemistry and how their relationship developed amidst chaos and danger. Both characters are dealing with deep emotional trauma, all while racing to stop a serial killer who appears to be copying the gruesome crimes of Oaklynn’s own father. The plot is layered with suspense, emotional depth, and just the right amount of romance.

One of the most chilling aspects was getting the serial killer’s point of view—it added a creepy intensity that kept me on the edge of my seat. While I did have an idea of who the killer might be, Turner did a fantastic job of keeping me second-guessing until the reveal.

If you're a fan of Jessica Patch or enjoy fast-paced romantic suspense with emotional depth, definitely add Echoes of Darkness to your list!

Okay, if you're looking for some comedy relief, there's no better author in my book (pun intended) to deliver the perfect read! Not only that, there's a deeper faith thread to bind everything together. Liwen Ho is my go-to Rom-Com writer when I need a break from real life, and a few laughs (maybe even some guffaws). Her characters never fail to charm me; they're the kind you root for and wished were real.

Lily is a devoted older sister and wants her younger sister to marry her long-time boyfriend. But according to Chinese tradition—and her mother's wishes—Lily must marry first. There's a problem however, she isn't currently dating nor does she have a love interest. Thus ensues pursuit of marriage (or at least a pretend one) she'll even settle for one of convenience.

Hunter has been secretly in love with Lily for about a year. Working in the same office building as her has put him in an awkward position—so he decides to at least befriend her. He can't believe his luck (or should I say God's providence) when she proposes a plan that benefits both of them, how could he possibly say no?

He literally just married me without expecting anything in return. Who does that?! Apparently, a non-Chinese guy who speaks Mandarin, rescues me from PowerPoint presentations, and hates pineapple on his pizza. I suppose two out of three ain't bad.

I've read Liwen's Fab-Forties series (and loved each one), and I have to say, this has got to be my favorite yet. Hunter has a funny/cute side that Lily hasn't ever seen before that perfectly fits with her personality. These two complement each other in so many ways and it was fun to see each layer unfold. I loved how the author had these two “date” after they are inconveniently married (you'll understand when you read this). Lily's family added to the charm of this story....her mom was a hoot & her younger sister was the sweetest. 

The faith theme felt natural; Lily learned that she doesn't have to be “perfect” to be loved because she already is in God's eyes and Hunter reminds her that she has the freedom to be who God created her to be—sometimes that looks like being irresponsible (at least in some areas). This story ticked a lot of boxes for me, one being I love marriage-of-convenience, so it's always fun when I can read it in a modern-day setting. There's a lot of depth, laughter, and profound moments to discover in the pages. I never pass up the chance to read a book by Liwen!

KIM'S REVIEW:
I’m so glad my friends recommended C.C. Warrens to me—I’ve devoured all her stories and can’t wait for more! I didn’t think anything could top the Holly series, but the Cherry Creek Mysteries might just do it.

I love Noelle and Derek and their evolving relationship! The secondary characters add so much depth to the series. I’m even starting to warm up to Walt! Ms. Warren is fantastic at developing her characters. The suspense and mystery kept me on the edge of my seat, and I was completely shocked by how it all unfolded! As usual, the faith thread was well done!

While you can read Dragonfly Ashes without having read Firefly Diaries, the character histories and relationships won’t be as rich—and you’ll miss out on another excellent mystery! Highly recommended!

Christian Romantic Suspense

KIM'S REVIEW:
This is my first Jessica Ashley book, but it definitely won’t be my last! I really enjoyed this story. The suspense was top-notch, and Lance was such a strong, admirable male character. It took me a bit longer to warm up to Eliza, but once her heartbreaking past was revealed, her behavior toward Lance made perfect sense. I loved the small-town setting of Hope Springs and getting to know its charming residents. The faith thread was beautifully woven throughout—I especially appreciated how naturally Lance trusted the Lord and without hesitation.The mystery kept me guessing—I had no idea who the villain was or how he was managing to pull everything off.

This is the first book I’ve read in the Coastal Hope series, and I’ve already downloaded Searching for Peace, which is Elijah’s story!

When I wasn’t reading Pages of Promise, I found myself thinking about the story and itching to get back to it. That’s always a good sign!

Someone? Coming to their rescue? Well, Elena's mother certainly had a plan for that . . . her! Finding a wealthy husband for Elena was the sole reason that Juanita Bradford was accompanying her two daughters on a husband hunting excursion to Kentucky's grand Graham Springs resort, where the wealthy gathered to enjoy the healing powers of the property's mineral springs along with its numerous options for pleasurable activities.

This lovely historical romance bears evidence of how quickly a family's fortune could change after the death of a beloved father whose poor choices drove the ones left behind to take desperate chances, making Elena's determination to save her family all the more complicated and as it turns out, a lot more interesting. Would she have to sacrifice love for convenience? Or had the one her heart longed for been closer than she thought? When things take a more dangerous turn, will it even matter?

Nicely paced with interesting characters and a steady supply of intriguing turns of events!

“Admire something more than what you can see on the surface.”

To Love a Beast is talented author Karen Witemeyer’s retelling of Beauty and the Beast, and it a delight to read. I loved the creativity Witemeyer used in adapting this story to a rural Texas setting with the heroine as a bookbinder. I enjoyed learning more about the process of bookbinding as I read the engrossing tale.

The characters were wonderful, relatable, and engaging. Callista Rosenfeld was an entrancing “Beauty” with enough spunk and courage to face up to Everett Griffin as the “Beast.” Everett had been badly scarred by a spurned socialite lady in New York and was living in the wilds of Texas with only a handful of servants and a huge dog. When Callista’s father was injured and unable to fulfill his bookbinding contract with Everett, Callista takes his place.

“Hope sees possibilities where fear sees only barriers.”

Against his better judgment, Everett lets Callista stay, and she promptly endears herself to his servants. I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction and banter between Callista and Everett. It was entertaining to see their relationship change as they got to know each other.

“He’d left careful behind the moment he’d let Callista Rosenfeld into his house. And it seemed he’d soon be paying the price for his reckless folly.”

This is one of my favorite fairytale retellings. It was very creative, well-written and charming.

A spur of the moment road trip to visit towns with literary connections was concocted by Chloe Vance so she could bond better with her mother Edie and reveal a life changing opportunity. Her sister, Lauren, reluctantly joins them after being let go from her job. But neither wants to reveal their secrets just yet. Mom Edie tells herself she is protective of her daughters but her relationship in the past with her own mother colors her perspective.
 

I loved the scenes in St. Louis, Mansfield and Branson because I live in Missouri. The literary settings were so much fun to learn about.
 

A defining moment came near the end when secrets came out in the open and the women realized that they really saw each other for the first time.
 

This was a book that caused me to deeply reflect on family relationships. A stabilizing character was dad Grant, who supported the three women and kept confidences.
 

The story was somber at times but had humor and showed the stages of spiritual maturity of each of the women. It was very different from the other books by this author but not any less significant.

DYING TO SELL by Tina Radcliffe and Ellery Adams, Reviewed by Kim #ReleaseDay

HOPE STREET CHURCH MYSTERIES Book Nine

KIM'S REVIEW:

I just love this cozy mystery series! I always say, if Tina Radcliffe’s name is on it, I’ll read it. She’s such a gifted storyteller—her writing is warm, engaging, and full of heart. The characters she creates are so easy to love and root for, and I find myself completely immersed in their world every time I pick up one of her books.

One of my favorite elements of the series is the Bible study group. I love how this tight-knit, supportive group of friends works together to solve mysteries in their small town. It adds such a fun and unique twist to the usual cozy mystery formula, and their camaraderie brings depth to the story. The faith thread is always seamlessly woven throughout—never heavy-handed or out of place. It feels natural and uplifting, and it really adds to the charm of the series.

I also really love Cooper and Jon—watching their relationship grow and develop over the course of the series has been such a treat. Their dynamic adds a layer of emotional richness to the story, and I always look forward to seeing what’s next for them. Honestly, I think this series could just keep going and going, and I’d happily follow along for every installment!

While Dying to Sell is book 9 in the series, it reads perfectly well as a standalone. New readers won’t feel lost, but longtime fans will appreciate the continued growth of the characters and community.

Golden State Treasure Book #2: A High-Energy Treasure 

Map-Lead Western Romance set in the American Old West

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
Mary Connealy continues her Golden State Treasure series with the second book, Legends of Gold. I would advise readers to read the first in the series before starting this one, as it is somewhat of a continuing story. Connealy does a good job of filling in the back story, but some of the threads continue through the series. I really love the strong female characters that the author creates. They are very interesting, competent, intelligent, and courageous, which is refreshing to read in historical fiction.

Rancher Josh Hart and orphan Tilda Muirhead are featured in this tale. When Tilda takes a teaching job on Josh’s family ranch, she is surprised by the arrival of Ben, who claims to be her brother. Josh takes on the job as Tilda’s protector as the mystery and suspense deepen.

I greatly enjoyed the appearance of characters from previous books and series in this one. Connealy is a favorite author, and it’s delightful to see where she takes her characters. An infusion of her signature wit and humor keeps the story entertaining and fun.

What a fascinating look behind the scenes at an art gallery and an exhibit at the Tate Gallery in London 1973 soon after the death of Pablo Picasso. It was so interesting to delve into the world of paintings, artists and forging.
 

Lily is an assistant to an art expert and says the right thing at the wrong time, putting not only her job in jeopardy but that of her mentor and calling into question the reliability of the whole gallery.
 

Full of intrigue, danger and complicated family issues, this was a realistic look at modern art, painting techniques and complex connections dating back to WWII.
 

With a fun cameo by Pierce Brosnan and an unexpected romantic twist, this was truly a masterpiece!

TUPELO GROVE SERIES #2

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This is the second in a series that should be read in order because there is much information in the first that contributes to understanding the second installment.

The story is full of drama about a legacy of Tupelo Groves University that Savannah wants to preserve. When things get dangerous, she and Hez, her ex and soon-to-be husband, must track down a band of artifact smugglers as well as safeguard the University and keep it from going bankrupt.

Lots of intrigue because Hez and Savannah do not realize where the threat is coming from. But they know there is a leak that is making things difficult.

They are also trying to mend from the past that drew them apart. Hez and Savannah are still working through those problems but they are committed to eachother and to God and rely on Him to work out the details.

This was very exciting as well as informative about ancient artifacts. It kept my interest until the end.
This was a great collaboration. I cannot wait to read the next one.

PAULA'S REVIEW:

I won this title from Library Thing and was very pleased with the story by a new-to-me author.

Amaranth is an orphan with the stigma of being Chinese in the time when her ethnicity was frowned upon. She is a very skilled secretary and finds employment with Mrs. Tildon who is adamant about furthering the cause for women to get the vote. Her son is a big help to her and starts to be interested in Amaranth.

There are strange goings on in the Tildon household and Amaranth endears herself to Will and Mrs. Tildon.

This was a sweet love story and the faith thread was strong. A theme was looking at the character of a person rather than outward appearance.

This was an excellent story with a different perspective on the bias towards Chinese in 1903 as well as the struggles in suffragette movement. It was very well written and informative.

This story takes place in 1837 in Canada during a time of political unrest. It reminded me of our own Revolution.
 

Sara and James have both lost their spouses and James has a 10 year old daughter Evie.
 

Sara has a troubled past, is estranged from her family and has fallen on hard times. Circumstances bring James and Sara together through Evie, a sweet, precocious and mischievous girl.
 

I liked watching the romance blossom between James and Sara. They were both strong personalities and had a solid faith among other great qualities.
 

This was a polished debut novel which showed that the author researched her subjects well.
 

I enjoyed learning more about Canadian history and look forward to another book by this author.

I love these fairytale-retellings with a Texas flair and this one is my favorite. It had me picturing the Disney version in my head with all the favorite characters. I liked the twist on the names like Mrs. Potter and Mr. Lightfoot. Mr. Griffen as the beast was just perfect! 

 

The descriptions put me right in the story. The information about bookbinding was very interesting and the paintings by Everett Griffen were so mesmerizing. They showed Calista what was in his soul. Ms. Witemeyer wove the story into a tale of beauty and gave a clear spiritual lesson. We should be looking at the heart and not outward appearances. She also touched on being a friend and seeking forgiveness.

 

This is a sure winner and I hope more Texas-themed fairytales are in the works.
