A TOKEN OF LOVE by Carrie Turansky, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"Date of entry: 18 September 1877. Female infant. Three months old."

When Lillian Freemont receives word from her estranged sister Serena, pleading for Lillian to search for the young daughter that out of necessity she had left at London's Foundling Hospital eight years prior, Lillian immediately takes action. Already widowed at a young age and blessed with deep monetary resources, Lillian forgives her sister's past missteps and sets out to reunite mother and daughter, her niece's identification token in hand. Except . . . where had the little girl disappeared to?

Decades later, acting director of London's Foundling Museum Janelle Spencer is put in a precarious position when she and filmmaker James Conrad stumble across some disturbing historical newspaper articles which contain information that could cast shadows across the museum's honorable reputation. . . . at a time when their fund-raising efforts were at a critical juncture. Dig deeper? Or ignore the truth for the sake of prestige? Both options hold a certain amount of risk.

The historical pendulum between these two time periods was so expertly timed, each swing bringing answers just a little closer to fruition without frustrating the reader or diminishing the plot. Fascinating history, inspiring faith features, lovely romantic touches, and overall? An absolutely wonderful story.

"We have come to be a voice for the voiceless, for the forgotten women and girls who are subjected to exploitation and injustice. It is our sacred duty to protect them, to champion their rights, and to restore their dignity."
