AN OVERDUE MATCH by Sarah Monzon (coming in February!), Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

Checking Out Love Book #1:
A Book about Books; Closed Door RomCom with a Librarian Heroine

TRIXI'S REVIEW:

I don’t often read Rom-Com fiction, but I have enjoyed other titles by Sarah Monzon so I gave this one a chance. The premise intrigued me enough to want to know Tai and Evangeline’s love story.

First off, this hit very close to home with me because my mom developed alopecia later in her life. I know the stigma of those who suffer from this autoimmune disease… the pity in people’s eyes, the whispers behind their back and what the loss of hair can do to a person’s self-esteem. It can be very debilitating and hinder an otherwise fulfilling life. I was curious to know how the author handled this…then to find out in the reader’s note, her own mom suffered from this disorder. So, I knew she wrote from personal knowledge and with grace and compassion.

Let’s talk about the characters. Tai is our local “bad boy”; you know the kind…tattoos, dark clothing and a supposed reputation for being a ladies’ man—the “love-em-and-leave-em” kind. He’s about to shatter Evangeline’s world and blow her preconceptions out of the water! As the story developed, he began to break down her wall of self-preservation and self-defense. What I admired the most, is when he helped her remember the truth of how God sees her and has always pursued her and never stopped loving her. I call that a true hero! One who can speak life and truth into a broken heart and restore the faith they have in our ever-faithful God.

Evangeline has been torn apart by her ex-fiancé when he left her after she lost her hair. She’s put up solid walls to protect her heart from further hurt. Determined to give other people their happily-ever-after, she turns to matchmaking with disastrous (and hilarious) results. Then along comes Tai who completely ignores those lines she’s drawn in the sand.

I’d say this was one book that really shatters stereotypes and looks to the heart and soul of a person. One where the love of God can shine in broken lives, down-trodden hearts and speak life to dispel those lies we think of ourselves sometimes. I loved the lessons and reminders the author included; they certainly helped me.

If you like humor, witty banter, an opposites attract trope, wonderful supporting characters, faith-filled fiction and are an avid book lover and devourer of happily-ever-after stories…I’d say this is one you must read!

Can a librarian's matchmaking mischief lead to a love that rewrites their stories?

If the covers of every romance book ever published didn't convince librarian Evangeline Kelly that she isn't heroine material, her fiancé calling off their wedding when she lost her hair to alopecia did. But what's a girl head over heels for love to do when her feelings are unrequited? Matchmake, that's what. Armed with library patrons' check-out histories, she's determined to make at least one love connection--even if it's not her own.

Tattoo artist Tai Davis is used to people judging him with a single glance, so it doesn't surprise him when the town's quirky new librarian believes his bad-boy reputation without giving him a chance. He can't help being intrigued by her, though, so when he discovers Evangeline's secret matchmaking scheme, he's not above striking a bargain with her. She just has to agree to one date with him for every time she uses his hometown knowledge to set up library patrons on a romantic rendezvous. PAULA'S REVIEW:

What a fantastic debut for Jayna Breigh.

This book has it all. Flawed, but redeemable hero and heroine, a problematic puzzle to solve, and a grandma who imparts, godly wisdom every chance she gets. Pair that with a fake engagement, turned to a steady, swoony romance, and you have a winning plot that does not disappoint. I love the heroine, Nona, who is dealing with guilt, but seeks to atone for a wrong that caused grief. Along comes a lawyer, and ex jock DeMarcus, who makes his spiritual journey back to God with the help of memories of his grandma, and her spouting scripture for every occasion.

The mystery that Nona helps Pastor Grant solve, delves into interesting genealogy, and there is a plot to grab his inheritance. The story takes a lot of turns, but the pieces all fit together very nicely.

I loved this book and cannot wait to see what this author comes up with next.

ONLY ONE MORE LIE by Christy Barritt, (True Crime Junkies #), Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

True Crime Junkies Book 9

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

"What's with all these secrets everyone seems to have?"

Lies, secrets, murders . . . it was the murder of her parents nearly one year prior at Borealis Reindeer Camp outside Fairbanks, Alaska that prompted Juniper Burrows to summon members of The Round Table podcast to her beautiful resort property. A serial killer dubbed the "December Dismemberer", for the heinous way body parts of the victims were built into snowmen, was still at large and if past history was an accurate indicator of his pattern, another death was only four days away.

It didn't take the podcasters long to realize that just about everyone they met could be considered a suspect, but unfortunately before incriminating evidence could be gathered, tragedy struck again.

Another fabulous "cat and mouse" storyline with a dangerous deadline amidst characters whom readers have come to know and love . . . but do they know everything???

. . . a rather significant surprise is in store, along with some lingering romantic tensions that need smoothing out.

The group of six podcasters travel to the scene of the last crime—a reindeer farm transformed into a vacation destination. With the ominous date fast approaching, the team races to solve the mystery.

But as if battling subzero temperatures, raging snowstorms, and a twisted killer aren’t enough, the team begins to suspect the killer isn’t the only one harboring secrets. Someone would do anything to keep the truth hidden. Even if it means . . . telling only one more lie.

Instead of taking advantage of the opportunity to deepen her professional connections and perfect her ability to converse with customers, Claire comes face to face with an illusionist from her past. And a sad ultimatum (or opportunity?) for her future. - "A Bouquet of Dreams"

THE INDIGO HEIRESS by Laura Frantz, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

(A Marriage of Convenience Historical Romance
Novel Set in 1700s Colonial America and Scotland)

Paula's Review:
One of my favorite eras to read about is Colonial America. Ms Frantz always educates me to the time and customs of America in its formative years. I learned about Indigo plantations and what other crops they grew. This story also traveled across the ocean to Scotland and told of the rich businessmen who traded and had interests in the Americas. This perspective from Scotland was very eye opening.

Juliet has hostile thoughts about Leith and the arranged marriage her father wants but eventually comes to appreciate his character.

This is a vibrant story with people who grow in their faith. It is a story to be savored and pondered over. It has elements of romance, suspense, danger, compassion, charity and selflessness. All wrapped up in the atmospheric settings of Virginia and Scotland.

I am always glad to step into the historical stories of Laura Frantz.

HEART OF THE GLEN by Jennifer Deibel, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

(A Forced Proximity Sweet Historical Romance Set on a 1900s Ireland Farm)

PAULA'S REVIEW:

This was a delightful, atmospheric story. I could hear the Irish lilt as I read and gleaned new insight into old Irish customs.
Saoirse is a troubled soul haunted by the loss of her family. She is taken in by Aileen and Owen McCready after her employment opportunity falls through. Owen is a master weaver and sister Aileen helps on the sheep farm while he plies his trade. After someone attacks Owen, it is up to Saoirse to learn how to weave the tweed that will save the farm.

I loved the setting and the characters in this novel. They are stalwart and have a faith that is long-standing, and it sustains them through difficulties. A couple, Bridie and John, are the voice of spiritual wisdom, and showed friendship and hospitality. The portrayal of Stout the sheep dog was a highlight. I could just picture him, herding the sheep in response to the whistle commands that Owen used.

This book was a joy to read. It kept me turning pages, especially during the tense moments. The romance built slowly and was very sweet. A great addition to the list of novels by this talented author.

WHEN STARS LIGHT THE SKY (The Women of Midtown Series #2) by Elizabeth Camden, Reviewed by Rebecca, Paula, and Winnie! #ReleaseDay

(The Women of Midtown):
(A WWI Marriage of Convenience Clean Historical Romance Novel)

REBECCA'S REVIEW
"He would never again give a woman the power to trample his heart or destroy his career."

"Could her lack of citizenship be a problem?" When Inga Klein chooses to accompany James Gerard (along with his wife), America's Ambassador to Germany, she assumes that her German heritage and knowledge of the language would serve her well in her role as his personal secretary. Through a providential chance meeting years earlier, the Gerards had taken Inga under their wing, providing her opportunity and education, prompting Inga to leave her beloved New York City in order to serve her new country overseas.

When Germany plunges into war, and the United States struggles to remain neutral, Inga's status as an unmarried young woman, who never thought to pursue American citizenship before leaving the country, now faces legitimate safety concerns. Enter . . . "cold oats".

Benedict Kincaid, the diplomatic chief of staff to Ambassador Gerard, was a no-nonsense, everything by the book sort of man. Smoothing over the ambassador's gaffs and explosive retorts, Benedict kept a tight lid on relationships in general, until the lovely, impulsive, and utterly distracting Miss Klein joined the diplomatic staff. Enough sparks flew between the two of them to ignite a bonfire, but when Inga's well-being is jeopardized, Benedict actually considers putting irritation aside long enough to trust a slowly warming corner of his otherwise cool heart . . . for just a short period of time, right?

An outstanding blend of story, character, and historical detail! Personally, I enjoyed the repartee between Benedict and Inga so much that I will most certainly re-read this book over and over again, just to sit on the sidelines!
*I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from Baker Publishing through Interviews and Reviews. 4.5 stars

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This intriguing book showed what it was like to be in Berlin in the American Embassy just before WWI.

Inga was a German-born girl who settled in New York. She became the secretary to the Ambassador to Berlin. Diplomatic chief of staff to Ambassador Gerards, Benedict, is a very blunt, businesslike man. The diplomatic contingent is doing all it can to keep American neutral. But as war looms, Inga fears she will not be able to return to America, since she has not followed through with her citizenship status. A marriage in name only to Benedict seems the only solution.

It was very interesting to note that this book was partly based on the memoirs of the real Ambassador Gerards. The author did a great job of conveying the tension between the Embassy staff and the German rulers at the time that was critical in our nation’s history.

I loved the way the romance developed and how Inga struggled to feel smart enough and worthy enough to be the wife of a diplomat. And Benedict was an admirable hero who was patient even though he was struggling with a past that was affecting his present relationship with Inga.

This is another well written historical to add to my favorites list.

WINNIE'S REVIEW
Talented author Elizabeth Camden’s book, When Stars Light the Sky, is a perfect example of why I love historical romance fiction. It combines fascinating historical events with a delicious romance to create a fantastic story. Camden does this to perfection, and I absolutely adored this book. Based on true events and a real U.S. Ambassador to Germany in the years prior to the U.S. entering World War I, the story is riveting and kept me turning pages. I was very interested in learning more about the intricacies of international diplomatic relationships between countries and how they affected history.

The main characters are realistically-flawed, engaging, and delightful. I adored Inga and Benedict and their opposites attract relationship. Their verbal sparring and witty banter kept me amused and cheering for them. A stellar cast of supporting characters added interest and intrigue.

If you enjoy opposites attract, marriage of convenience, and enemies-to-more stories along with some outstanding history lessons, be sure to read this book. I love Camden’s careful historical research and attention to details. Her writing is colorful and compelling and leaves me wanting more. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

SERIAL BURN by Lynette Eason, Reviewed by Rebecca and Paula #ReleaseDay

(Lake City Heroes Book #3): (Christian Suspense Thriller with Mystery and Clean Romance with an FBI Agent and Fire Marshal)

REBECCA'S REVIEW
"He took a deep breath and went to implement the first step in his plan."

Her church had been burnt to the ground. Deputy State Fire Marshal Jesslyn McCormick wondered what could possibly motivate a person to intentionally set fire to a church, and yes, she was almost certain it was an act of arson based on the color and pattern of the burn marks. What was totally outside her field of certainty was the piece of fine jewelry that someone had dropped at the scene . . . intentionally? Even stranger was the fact that the brooch triggered a very faint memory. Could it be? Maybe it was.

F. B. I. Special Agent Nathan Carlisle is called in to assist in what was considered a hate crime, burning down a church. He'd met and admired Jesslyn before, but these circumstance were a little different, maybe even a lot different, since it quickly became obvious that someone was settling a personal vendetta against Jesslyn. Had the person or persons who had destroyed her entire family come back to finish her off? Why now?

As the heat builds in both the investigation and between Nathan and Jesslyn, what will it take to cool things off in either direction . . . one determines her survival and the other, their future. (which quite honestly, they may want to keep warm!)

Another fast-paced, cleverly plotted romantic suspense filled with "Lake City Heroes"!

PAULA'S REVIEW

“There are a lot of questions that only God can answer.”

Jesslyn definitely has a lot of questions when an arsonist keeps targeting her and the buildings she is connected with.

Ms. Eason takes us on a thrilling and puzzling ride to find the person behind these crimes. Fire Marshal Jesslyn digs deep into her personal tragedy of 20 years ago to ferret out clues. FBI agent Nathan is along to protect her. But he has secrets of his own that may quench any romantic sparks about to ignite.

Full of excitement, danger and family drama, this story focuses on two hurting people who try to keep their eyes on God and His purposes. There is an excellent explanation of forgiveness which ties into the reason Jesus came to redeem us.

Do not miss this wonderfully human story of loss, love and faith.

She's out for justice. But the arsonist she's tracking is out for retribution.

Now the fire marshal of Lake City, Jesslyn McCormick is determined to find the person who started the fire that robbed her of her family when she was just seven years old. As the twentieth anniversary of the tragedy approaches, a string of fires--including at Jesslyn's church--brings up all those old feelings and offers new evidence.

Because church fires are considered a hate crime, FBI Special Agent Nathan Carlisle is called in to work with local law enforcement. Nathan has his own past--one he'd prefer not to revisit. And focusing on helping Jesslyn track down the arsonist is a great distraction.

As both the case and the chemistry between Jesslyn and Nathan heat up, memories will come flooding in from the past to bump up against hopes for the future. And when Jesslyn comes face-to-face with her worst nightmare, she'll have to confront her fears and rely on Nathan and her community of friends in order to survive.

KNIGHT BREW by Heather Day Gilbert, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Book #9 THE BARKS AND BEANS CAFE MYSTERY SERIES

REBECCA'S REVIEW

Barks and Beans Cafe employees were poised to enjoy their booth at the local Renaissance Faire when tragedy struck. What was supposed to be a jousting exhibition turned fatal for one of the riders; a man whose reputation was already in shatters was carried off on a stretcher from something other than the thrust of a spear. As is turned out, "He didn't die of an overdose. His tox screen showed he was poisoned."

Cafe co-owner Macy Hatfield's vibrant curiosity demanded that she think back over everyone and everything that she had seen that day . . . and there were plenty to choose from. A great big distraction was her boyfriend, Titan McCoy, who was in town visiting Macy and her brother Bo . . . however, Titan was the best kind of diversion, especially dressed up as an heroic knight. As it turned out, Macy gets caught trying to play heroine and ends up breathing a sigh of relief when her knight in shining armor comes to the rescue.

Another great story where it seems that just about everyone has a reason to kill . . . and Macy has more than enough reasons to make a life changing decision.

Book Nine in the RWA Daphne Award-winning series!

Welcome to the Barks & Beans Cafe, a quaint place where folks pet shelter dogs while enjoying a cup of java...and where murder sometimes pays a visit.

The Barks & Beans booth at the Renaissance Faire is hopping, since Macy managed to talk her muscled redhead brother into donning a kilt for the occasion. Even better, Macy's boyfriend Titan has come for a visit, so she can't wait to peruse the shops and watch the shows with him.

But when a well-rehearsed joust takes a fatal turn, Macy becomes a key witness. Can she believe her eyes, or did someone cloak their ruthless intent with smoke and mirrors? A late night stakeout seems the only way to determine what really happened...but someone scarier than the plague doctor is lying in wait for Macy, and this time, the damsel might not find a way out of her distress.

Join siblings Macy and Bo Hatfield as they sniff out crimes in their hometown...with plenty of dogs along for the ride! The Barks & Beans Cafe cozy mystery series features a small town, an amateur sleuth, and no swearing or graphic scenes.

THE WAY HOME and SEASONS OF THE HEART by Irene Hannon, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

ENCORE EDITIONS OF FAMILY TIES SERIES

REBECCA'S REVIEWS:

THE WAY HOME

"Cal, there's a woman on the phone who says she won you in an auction. Is she a nut, or is there something you haven't told me?"

It was a bold move, broadcast journalist Amy Winter would be the first to admit . . . .but purchasing a date with the tight-lipped prosecutor Cal Richards might give her an advantage in the high profile trial she was covering . . . or not. Determined to make a name for herself in order to secure an anchor spot, Amy was willing to walk out on a limb. The question was . . . would it hold her?

She just wouldn't go away. Cal Richards was known through-out the Atlanta area for refusing interviews, but Amy Winter had not read "the memo" which read . . . back off. When Cal realizes that Amy is the one who paid an enormous amount of money to his favorite charity for an evening in his presence, well . . . how hard could it be? Thankfully, he had no idea.

This charming, but deeply meaningful not-really friends-to-more-than-just-friends trope is filled to the brim with everything that makes a story sing off the page! (right, Gram?) . . . all the way home.

She seemed to have it all—
except a way home.

Broadcast journalist Amy Winter has her sights set on a network job, and the sports-star trial she’s been assigned to cover for her Atlanta station might be just the thing to get her noticed by the corporate bigwigs. If she can persuade prosecuting attorney Cal Richards to cooperate with her coverage. But the man is more tight-lipped than a CIA agent.

Cal has no time for pushy journalists who prefer sensationalism over substance. And Amy is beyond pushy. Case in point—finagling her way into a date with him. When their paths cross in a different setting, however, his opinion of her begins to change…and his feelings start to deepen. But the dream he’s kept close to his heart doesn’t align with her career ambitions, creating a major roadblock to romance.

Can these two strong, determined people find a way to reconcile their divergent ambitions and build a future together, or will their blossoming love vanish like a Smoky Mountains mist?

In this RT Book Reviews Reviewer’s Choice Award winner, bestselling author Irene Hannon shares a tender story about the power of love to change lives and the importance of discovering what really matters.

SEASONS OF THE HEART

"Eric Carlson. The man who'd saved Jack's life."

Kate Nolan's life had changed dramatically since that icy winter evening; her husband had been severely injured and in spite of the kind physician who had worked frantically to save Jack's life, he had died seven months later without ever regaining consciousness. What a coincidence that their paths would cross five years later when her daughter Sarah was experiencing chronic stomach aches, only to be seen by none other than pediatrician Dr. Eric Carlson.

Eric Carlson's life had also changed dramatically since the evening he worked feverishly to save the life of the critically injured car accident victim; Eric had lost his wife to divorce and now filled the void by working longer hours and volunteering for multiple non-profit organizations. Seeing Kate again was a jolt to his senses, but what did it mean? He had learned the hard way that medicine and marriage didn't make a good partnership.

What a wonderful reading experience! The word flow is as beautiful as the love story written between its pages, and the characters? . . . "I needed you, and here you are".

Can two lonely, hurting people let go of the past
and take a second chance on love?

Single mom Kate Nolan has endured more than her share of trauma and loss, and now her young daughter is having adjustment issues at her new day-care facility. The five-year-old has also developed mysterious stomachaches that need attention, even if Kate would prefer not to set foot in a medical facility ever again.

Pediatrician Eric Carlson never forgot the woman in the smashed car on that icy night he stopped to assist at an accident scene. And when she brings her little girl to his office, it’s clear both mother and daughter are under severe stress.

Arranging to have his recently widowed mother take over day-care duties seems like a solution to multiple problems. Except the setup brings problems of its own. Because as Kate and Eric begin to see more of each other, sparks fly—and neither is looking for romance. But if they can both find a way to leave the past behind and open their hearts again to the gift of love, might they discover that the best is yet to be?

THE VANISHING OF JOSEPHINE REYNOLDS by Jennifer Moorman, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This absorbing book was right up my alley. Kind of a time/portal/travel story which is both unbelievable and totally believable. It was a relatively clean read with not much mention of faith but did have a side character who was cheating on her spouse. It was also set in the Roaring Twenties so an illegal speakeasy was depicted.

The main character, Josephine, was a widow who purchased her great grandmother Alma’s mansion and found herself transported to 1927. After recurring forays into the past, she discovers something that may change her present. She has days to stop an event that could end her great grandmother’s life in the past and thus her own life.

What I liked about this book, besides the unique way Josephine traveled back to the past, was the relationship that she forges with Alma and Danny. And that Josephine moved forward from the grief of losing her husband to a new purpose for her life.

BackCover Blurb:

Can one thoughtless wish erase a life?

Widowed at thirty-five, Josephine Reynolds wishes she could disappear, but her concerned sister convinces her to buy their ancestral home, a Craftsman bungalow in disrepair and foreclosure. It's a welcome distraction, and Josephine can't believe her luck when she finds the home's original door in a salvage yard.

When she installs the door and steps through it, Josephine is transported into 1927, where she meets her great-grandmother Alma, a vivacious and daring woman running an illegal speakeasy in the bungalow's basement. Immersed in the vibrant Jazz Age, Josephine forms a profound bond with Alma, only to discover upon her return to the present that history has been altered. Alma's life was tragically cut short in a speakeasy raid just a week after their fateful meeting.

Josephine has a chilling revelation--her own existence is unraveling/vanishing--and she must race against time to rewrite history. Josephine is desperate to not only save Alma but save her own future in a time-bending journey where past and present intertwine in a desperate battle for survival.

Infused with Jennifer Moorman's signature blend of magical detail and heartfelt storytelling, The Vanishing of Josephine Reynolds is a tale of resilience in the face of loss and a testament to the timeless bond of family.
