A Token of Love is an absorbing split-time novel set in London in 1885 and 2023 and centered around the Foundling Hospital and the subsequent Foundling Museum. Talented author Carrie Turansky has seamlessly woven the two different timelines together to make a cohesive and interesting story. Turansky’s obvious extensive research shines and brings authenticity to the tale. I was quickly invested in both story lines. Lillian and Matthew were searching for Lillian’s niece, Alice, who was missing from the Foundling Hospital in 1885 after being left there eight years before. As they search, it’s apparent that something nefarious was happening to some of the children. In 2023, Janelle finds herself temporarily in charge of the Foundling Museum. When filmmaker Jonas Conrad arrives there to create a fundraising film, they find some alarming information that could damage the reputation of both the Museum and the Foundling Hospital.
I enjoyed seeing both of these relationships evolve and change as the couples worked together to solve the mysteries. Turansky has written a strong faith element into the tale, which adds inspiration and messages of forgiveness, faith, and hope. I liked reading the author’s note at the end of the book which adds some interesting information about her research. *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews. "All right, Truitt, my lad. You can play this one of two ways. First option: the long-lost husband still nursing a broken heart . . . Or the second: cool and calm as if he barely remembers . . . "
Fast-forwarding past their whirlwind romance of less than twenty-four hours, Jasper Truitt and Esme Fox accidentally reunite after a four year estrangement . . . which apparently had not made the heart grow fonder? . . . at least she didn't appear to be as affected as he was. Business before pleasure, my dear, because both of them were only after one thing at the extravagant alcohol infused gathering; a diamond studded tiara known as the Valkyrie. How ironic that the two star-crossed lovers were both thieves.
One flamboyant scene after another plays out in this cat and mouse version of "to catch a thief"; nevertheless, repetitive and redundant becomes riveting about two thirds of the way through this book, when the romance seems to take on a persona all its own. Will it all come down to who has the tiara . . . . or will it? *I purchased a copy. Note: a clean read not inspirational, also alcohol use involved. 3.5 stars

Lake City Heroes Book #2: (Christian Suspense Thriller with Mystery and Clean Romance)
"You catch more flies with honey, sweetheart. Remember that." Did her grandmother really know what she was talking about, because Kenzie King was having a difficult time navigating the waters of being the only female on her SWAT team with any measure of decorum. She was extremely qualified to be a tactical medic, Kenzie's law enforcement skills were accompanied by an M. D. which in itself should have earned respect, but still . . . there was that one loud voice above all others who questioned her very presence.
"Beautiful Kenzie King, who took his breath away and pulled all his protective instincts to the surface."
SWAT team leader Cole Garrison was conflicted about his feelings for Kenzie, he was way past the point of ignoring the way he felt, but for the sake of team unity Cole intentionally compartmentalized them on a regular basis. Then . . . she became a target of someone else's deadly ire, putting not only her life, but the lives of his entire team in danger.
What did I love most about this particular romantic suspense? The plotting was extraordinary; strategically placed snippets of family history interrupted the chapter flow, providing an eerie backdrop that tip-toed in and out of relevancy to the characters' present circumstances. That being said, you could practically reach out and touch the unspoken chemistry between Cole and Kenzie; begging to be recognized and yet careful not to breach boundaries, until . . .

Contemporary Small Town Opposites Attract Romance about
a Flower Shop and Matchmaker
"We just need to give her time to get used to having the walking dead in her cooler."
Welcome back to the small, intimate lakeside community of Moonberry Lake, where the owner of the most beautiful flower shop in town has a "refrigerator full of elderly men"! You read that right, Delphinium Hayes is unintentionally participating in an attempt by the residents of the local senior care facility to escape what they perceive as ignored demands for better food and entertainment options. In all actuality, they are just a group of bored, senior men who want to play poker in their undershirts and Delphinium has the perfect space to do just that . . .
Delphinium . . . now how does one describe an exquisite young woman with a nose for sniffing out trouble . . . depending on your natural scent, of course . . . and a genius when it comes to arranging flowers and loving seniors? The fact is, just about everyone in Moonberry Lake adores Delphinium, with one exception (at the moment), a tangibly distressed director of the Moonberry Lake's Garden Assisted Living and Senior Care Facility, Mr. Elliot Sturgis, whose anxiety over all the safety rules and regulations being broken is topping the charts . . . but never fear, the lovely, disheveled floral designer extraordinaire tells him that he exudes the scent of . . . violets????
It's impossible to encapsulate all of the moving parts and heartfelt emotions that this story inspires. The characters are incredibly lovable and engaging, (when they aren't being stubborn) the struggles they experience are a universal reflection of life and love and loss . . . and thankfully . . . within a community that we all wish we could call our own, and the outcome? . . . expect to laugh and cry with both joy and sorrow as Delphinium learns to bloom!

"The battle between science and faith was real.” Eliza Mills was at a unique point in time: when women were venturing into occupations held by men and a time of the discovery of dinosaur fossils as well as the questioning of the correlation between science and the Bible. All Eliza wants to do is point people to the God who created these awesome creatures.
She is also battling the conception of rich girl privilege and advantage. In addition she is pondering the possibility of more than friendship with Devin Schmitt.
This was a well-researched and engaging look at what was happening in the scientific world in 1916. I appreciated the portrayal of faith in the main characters and the growth shown. Devin illustrated integrity and steadfastness. Eliza demonstrated determination and owned up to her mistakes and doubts.
The romance was slow, steady and principled. As danger stalked Eliza, the villainous actions and turmoil added to the dramatic aspect.
Since I have been intrigued by archeology for a very long time, this series fueled my interest and satisfied my thirst for knowledge of this topic. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews. Elizabeth Camden has ventured into writing a contemporary novel and it is spectacular!
She has included a bit of history and the fascination with Faberge eggs in this intriguing story. With flowing prose we are taken to an orange grove in small town Florida where Jenny Summerlin discovers a skeleton in an old hollow Cypress tree. It only gets more mysterious and interesting from there. It has murder, cold war politics and romance doused and then rekindled, not to mention family clashes. All against the backdrop of running an orange grove and its hardships with the weather.
This story had me eager to turn pages and sorry to put it down. The characters were complex and realistic and the situations were completely believable.

Time's Lost Treasures Book #1: (A Victorian Historical Romance with Mystery and Intrigue Set in Oxford, England)
PAULA'S REVIEW:
I have been fascinated by archaeological digs and artifacts since I was given some fossils as a child. This story piqued my interest from the start.
I liked the strength Ami Dalton had as an educated woman who was immersed in Egyptology. She was adamant about returning the items to the country of origin. Our hero, Edmund Price, has returned to England from India and is surprised that Ami is not obsessed with him and his wealth as most other females are.
Ami: “My head is turned by a finely wrapped mummified corpse, not a flesh and blood pile of muscles.” As Ami catalogs and values the artifacts that Edmund has just purchased, Ami and Edmund help each other grow and recognize that God is at work in their lives.
This complex tale was full of Victorian atmosphere, lots of danger, intrigue, secret identities and a few shady characters. Ms. Griep adds interesting details such as word blindness, prank playing by the servants, and the rumor of an ancient curse to round out the suspenseful twists and turns.
Fans of Victorian Gothic stories will be pleased with the start of a new series and the authentic voice of the author. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House through Interviews and Reviews. REBECCA'S REVIEW: "I, sir, am a rescuer of forgotten fragments, a story guardian of the past, a fervent believer in bringing history to life for the masses. There is no one on this campus who knows as much about Egyptian relics as I do. "
"She was a determined little firebrand, he'd give her that." Miss Ami Dalton was also all wrapped up in a most attractive package with her mismatched clothes, broken shoes, and hair all awry . . . enchanting is what she was. Although Edmund Price, one of the most sought after bachelors in all of Oxford didn't do "enchanting" anymore, the professor's daughter seemed knowledgeable enough and could most certainly solve his most immediate problem (although he was trying to convince himself that she wouldn't conjure up more . . . problems, that is.); his crates of Egyptian artifacts needed to be unpacked, cataloged and assessed, and if Edmund wasn't mistaken, she was the best candidate for the job.
What Edmund could not have known . . . was that the little minx was involved in another line of work that she would never have admitted in polite company . . . in the darkness of night, she was frequently disguised as the "Shadow Broker". . . a rescuer of lost relics, so to speak.
Ami and Edmund's journey through the awkward moments of attraction interrupting the workplace sparked an entertaining undercurrent of "how did such an eccentric young woman catch the eye of such a prominent member of society?". Add in the fact that they were at respectable odds over what to do with the valuables; sell them for considerable profit, or return the items to their country of origin. . . . and you have a story that is full of "gold and shadows"! And treachery. And deceit. And believe it or not . . . romantic poetry!
" . . . maybe - all her striving to prove her intelligence and credibility didn't matter a whit to God . . . perhaps her worth was in who she was, who God made her to be, instead of being measured by what she achieved." *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.

In 1888 Victorian England, Ami Dalton navigates a clandestine dual life. By day, she strives to establish herself as a respected Egyptologist, overcoming the gender biases that permeate academia. But with a heart for saving black-market artifacts from falling into the wrong hands, she is most often disguised as her alter ego, the Shadow Broker.

Expecting a renowned Oxford professor, Edmund instead finds himself entangled with Ami, the professor's determined daughter. As they delve into the treasures, their connection deepens, but trouble emerges when a golden griffin--rumored to bear the curse of Amentuk--surfaces, and they're left to wonder if the curse really is at play, or if something more nefarious is hiding among the shadows. . .
A Grumpy Sunshine Holiday Romance at a B&B with Matchmaking and Christmas Baking TRIXI'S REVIEW: The funny thing is that hearing your laugh reminded me that I hadn’t heard my own in a really long time. You helped me find it again. And I will never forget that. ~Daniel to Whitney page 245
This is such a cute book that has a lot of depth to it and not just a fluffy feel-good romance. Though truth be told, it does have a bit of that too!
Liz Johnson is one of those authors that tends to make fiction real for me in the way she writes, from feeling like her characters are some I wished I could meet, to how the story plays out on the pages. I think I loved Whitney and Daniel from the get-go. In spite of the meddling of his Aunt Aretha, and all mishaps and missteps, I loved seeing how Johnson got these two opposite people together. I feel they communicated well and complemented each other in the end. I loved seeing Daniel become more relaxed and saw his hidden humor come through and I loved how he encouraged Whitney and made her feel like her dreams and goals were important. Their interactions were fun to watch and their banter made me laugh more than once.
I have not read the Red Door Inn series, but most certainly will after this! I loved seeing the interplay between all the characters and how they made up a community that helped each other. This story was a hit for me and I hope other readers agree! It’s so hard to review a great book like this without giving anything away. It’s one for Christmas fans and those who are looking for a feel-good story full of faith, love and romance…and of course, admirers of Liz Johnson. *I received a complimentary copy from Revell and was not obligated to leave a favorable review. All opinions stated here are mine alone. * REBECCA'S REVIEW: "The entirety of their interaction had been a bruised nose and an overflowing pie."
Sugar and spice and everything nice aside, Daniel Franklin's Aunt Aretha has romantic intentions up her sleeve during Daniel's holiday stay at the Red Door Inn; securing his future happiness by playing matchmaker . . . not with the whimsical, joyful, full of sunshine pie baker taking up residence in the inn's kitchen, but with someone else. And the catch???? Aretha has dangled culinary school tuition assistance in front of Whitney Garrett's (the before mentioned pie baker) nose, much like the mistletoe hanging in the hallway . . . if Whitney will assist in her scheme.
Can you guess what happens next? Of course you can. The joy is in reading all about it in this delightfully entertaining and romantic holiday story which involves a lot of pie tasting, Christmas lighting, sledding, kissing (under that meddlesome mistletoe) and remembering . . . that we are never alone, for God sent "Ee-man-ee-al" . . . kid talk for Emanuel.
P.S. - Plus, a ridiculous turkey hat thrown in for good measure! *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through Interviews and Reviews. 4.5 stars

Marie agrees, with a catch: Whitney has to watch the three Sloan children and cook breakfasts for the Red Door in return.

"The old shelterwood trees keep the forest safe from the wind and the weather, from too much sun and heat in the summer, too much snow in the winter. They're strong and pull up water from down deep in drought times, hold the soil so everything smaller can grow . . . The old take care of the young, just like a family."
Consider the implications if the young don't have a family, a shelter from heat and cold, water and food to nourish their bodies . . . can the olders discover a way to wrap themselves around the youngers, becoming a "shelterwood" of their own design? Apparently, they did. And perhaps you have already surmised that . . . we are not talking about trees anymore . . . but children.
This amazing dual timeline narrative splits chapters between the "elves" rumored to be living among the rocks, trees, and rivers of the Oklahoma forest and those who were hired to protect, maintain and conserve the natural resources of those same lands, with eighty plus years in between. Evidence of the hard fought survival between what was and what had become, is left behind for an astute, doggedly determined law enforcement ranger Valerie Boren-Odell to find.
"They tell you about the bones yet?"
After turning only a few pages, I tumbled headfirst into the secrets of the forest. As fascinating as the historical facts proved to be, it was the human element that dug visceral roots deep inside my heart. History has a way of repeating itself if we are not careful to take what we know to be true, handle it carefully and fight for it valiantly.
"So you see, the small dream that was born among the children of this forest did not die here. It grew . . . It branches stretched through air, to places far and near . . . Evil could not poison it. Men could not cut it down. Floods could not wash it away. It grew into a tree of life, of lives."
Long live the shelterwoods!

A page-turning psychological thriller with a final revelation you won’t see coming
"The lines between reality and imagination aren't always sharply defined . . . "
What had just happened? Riley Bishop had no proof (didn't the woman refer to herself as a ghost?) . . . even after a visit to the hospital there was no evidence of drugs in her system (why was she still so disoriented?) and the gallery security feeds didn't show anyone following her into the ladies room (but that conversation had seemed so real). Evidence, or lack thereof aside, what hurt the most was Deputy US Marshal Tucker Shaw's reaction; appropriate concern with shadows of doubt . . . was their first date really going to be their last . . . after all they had been through together?
Determined to find answers, Riley takes off on her own. Her late husband had been quite a hustler, embezzling millions of dollars which were never recovered, while apparently cheating on his wife in the process; it is obvious that someone thinks Riley has access to that fortune. Quickly realizing that she is in over her head, Riley teams back up with Tucker, only to be taken on a wild ride, endangering both of their lives and hearts in the process.
"God doesn't always take away the pain we face on the journey, but He does walk alongside us." . . . even if that path is through "the valley of the shadow of death".

In addition he is asked to be on the board of a charity for fallen women run by Phillipa Cashel and Dorothy Stokes. As the story progresses, there are hints of a romance between Bertie and Phillipa.
The author depicts the flavor of the Regency era and brings depth and warmth to her characters. The plot was mesmerizing, intriguing and mystifying. Just as Bertie thinks he has a lead on the case, another obstacle appears. He needs to prove himself before all is lost.
I was pleased to reconnect with characters from previous books, especially Daniel Swann who gives Bertie sound advice. The themes of second chances, redemption, the consequences of bitterness, forgiveness and a clear gospel message were laced throughout the story. “Grace and forgiveness are a gift from God. Not something we earn.”
I am anxious to see what is on the horizon for Bertie and Phillipa in the next book. *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Kregel through Just Read tours. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.* 5 stars and a strong faith thread

Set in England in 1902, Roseanna M. White’s new story, Christmas at Sugar Plum Manor, is perfect for getting the reader in a holiday mood. With plenty of sugar plums, Christmas cheer, and a nod to The Nutcracker, this charming tale is full of the magic of Christmas. The characters are well-drawn and engaging, especially Mariah and Cyril who reconnect after a shared childhood. As they rediscover their friendship and fond memories, they work together to bring Christmas joy to the people of the town. “When everyone works together, amazing things can happen.” While this is a light-hearted, delightful story, the author also weaves inspiration into it with references to the Christ child and the real purpose of Christmas. It’s also filled with forgiveness, family, and hope. This tale should appeal to those who enjoy entertaining, easy-to-read, clean and wholesome stories. *I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. "My daughter has been kidnapped. And I need your help to get her back."
After weeks of wondering where Tillie Young had disappeared to, Moose Mulligan finds the woman who had him daydreaming about the future on the doorstep of his home; bruises and a split lip marring her lovely face. Of course Moose and Alaska Air One Rescue team members are going to help Tillie, it's what they do best. Wait a minute . . . did she say daughter???
Moose has no idea what kind of trouble Tillie has gotten herself into, but he is fairly certain that she is holding back, not everything about her explanation is adding up . . . still, Moose goes out on a limb and makes Tillie a promise, "We'll get her back". His heart has sought out Tillie for months now, but it has become increasingly clear that she is carting around a boatload of baggage and her stubborn self-reliance isn't leaving much room for faith.
But a promise is a promise. (And . . . "the answer is always pie".)
Filled with a treasure trove of inspirational truths, ("you can't fight without the armor of God", "none of us deserve grace . . . but when we get it, we pass it along") this story begins in the fast lane, races down the straightaway in the blink of an eye, and crosses the finish line with a mere touch of the brakes. . . . thankfully, and perhaps more importantly, it also takes the time for hearts to heal, faith to grow, and love to bloom. *I purchased a copy and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.

My role as a hostage negotiator often plunged me into the evil designs of the human mind. I embraced the responsibility and possible danger because it’s my identity— a one-woman battlefront determined to free others from victimization.
The challenge excited me, but fear of failure stalked me, and respect for human life was my constant companion. Too often innocent lives depended on my ability to negotiate their safe release without anyone getting hurt. The demands, rewards, and sometimes the defeats with tragic outcomes kept me awake at night. How could I have done things differently? My apprenticeship began when I was eight years old, but thinking about those days didn’t change the past. Right now, lives were in jeopardy. . . .
I’d driven ten minutes out from a critical situation on a Wednesday afternoon when my cell phone rang. My contact, a detective from the Houston Police Department, had spent several hours talking to an angry man who held his wife and son hostage.
“Carrington, we have the information you requested,” Detective Aaron Peters said. “The man inside the home is the owner, Nick Henderson. Age thirty-five. Married to Christine. He’s holding his wife and eight- year- old son at gunpoint. Yesterday, he was served divorce papers, and we believe this is in retaliation.”
Hurt. Rejected. Probably a lit stick of dynamite. “You talked to him from the outside?”
“We’ve routed his calls through our mobile command center. I tried talking to him. Got nowhere. He hung up on me.” Aaron blew out his frustration.
Domestic calls were the most dangerous, often violent, causing me to appreciate my Kevlar vest. I had a handgun in my purse, but I could count on one hand the times I’d pulled it. Never used it. “All right. I’m nearly there. SWAT in place?”
“Yes, two have clear shots. Not an action I want to take unless necessary.”
“Me either. What are Henderson’s demands?”
“Just to leave him alone or he’ll pull the trigger on his family.”
Cool, calm focus settled on me. My ability to mediate critical discussions depended on my wearing emotional blinders to the outside world. “When did the problem start?”
“The wife phoned 911 at 8:00 a.m. today. I don’t know how long he was there before she reached out to us. We’ve been called here twice in the past month for domestic abuse.”
I glanced at my watch, and it neared 4:00 p.m. “Have HPD negotiators been talking to him?”
“Yes. Henderson hung up on them too. He’s drinking. Slurring his words. Seems to have trouble concentrating.”
Alcohol could make him more volatile. Flashing lights appeared on the residential street ahead. “I’m parking now. Give me five minutes.”
“I’m standing beside my car in front of the house.”
“Aaron, do you have Henderson’s work history?”
“Fired three months ago from Home Depot, where he held a management role. They walked him out of the store in front of his employees.”
The man definitely had nothing to lose.
Phone in hand, I hurried from my parked truck and raced to where police cars barricaded the entrance to the street where Henderson held his family. A reporter blocked my way between vehicles. She rammed a mic in front of my face.
“Carrington Reed, do you think this standoff will have a peaceful resolution?”
My blood boiled. The last time I had verbally unleashed on her aggressive means to get the best story, she lied in her article about my concern for those in danger. I paused long enough to give her eye contact. “My goal is always a peaceful solution. Excuse me, I need to talk to HPD.”
“Are the police advocating a violent takedown?”
“No.” I sidestepped around her and ignored her shouts.
Aaron stood in front of the home and waved. He had the appearance of average—average height, weight, gray eyes, brown hair, and shoulder span— but nothing about his physical appearance showed his intense scrutiny of a crime scene. His rating as one of HPD’s finest hit my respect button.
“Good to see you. I’d like the man’s cell number,” I said. “I assume my cell phone is routed through the command center too?”
“Sure thing.” He gave me the information. “The wife’s name is Christine, and the son’s name is Rand.”
I nodded my thanks and pressed in the digits. A man answered on the second ring.
“Nick, this is Carrington. I’m standing beside a police car outside your house, and I’d like to help you.”
“I . . . leave me alone.” He spoke fast and loudly. “I’m busy.”
“What do you need?”
“You can get rid of all those cops. I can’t breathe.”
I expected a more belligerent response. “Nick, I can’t do that. These officers are here to protect you in case someone tries to break into your home and hurt you.”
“I’d kill my wife and kid first.”
“Tell me why you feel that way.”
“They deserve it for the way they’ve treated me.” He stumbled over his words. “I’m a good husband and dad.”
“I’m sure you’re great at both. Tell me what’s hurting you.”

PAULA'S REVIEW: There is so much going on in this ingeniously, plotted, tense story. What starts out as a hostage situation turns into an investigation into a murder and so much more. Private negotiator, Carrington is in the thick of a deadly standoff but when it is over, she has to make sure the victims gets the care they need. Journalist, Levi began covering a story, but like Carrington becomes personally involved, they put their heads together, totally getting that they are not qualified investigators, but circumstances put them in the middle of the confounding aftermath.
I liked the alternating viewpoints of Carrington and Levi. It was interesting to get into their heads. Carrington is battling her own demons and learns to trust God. Levi is a messianic Jew, and that aspect was very well explained. “We are a dangerous pair. Curiosity and compassion. Always in trouble.” And as they share danger, the romance blooms.
The layered twists and turns had me quickly, turning pages in the villain, was a total surprise. The romance was paste just right in the faith element brightly shown. “The future wore a mask, but the One in charge held it in his hand. I knew it. I felt it. I believed it.” *I received a complementary copy of this book from Tyndall on behalf of the author through PICT tours and via NetGalley. I was not required to post a favorable review.
