THE DREAMS WE KNEW by Rachel Scott McDaniel, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
The press calls them sleuthing sweethearts, but will exes Divina Kline and Kent Brisbane re-tie the knot? I loved the flirty banter between rival private investigators Vinny and Kent, who have unresolved issues in their past.

This story loosely connects to other books by Ms. McDaniel, but can be read as a standalone. It was fun to see familiar faces.

The plot was compelling, the mystery intriguing, and the romance was dreamy. I liked the setting of the Roaring Twenties and the unlikely friends that Vinny called on to help her dig into the mysterious circumstances. The family connections were complicated, making them an integral part of the story. The author also educated me about an epidemic of sleeping sickness during the 1920s, another aspect that I appreciated.

This second-chance, romance, with an underlying faith thread, was top-notch, and so enjoyable. Kent was troubled, but swoony, and Vinny was smart-crafty, and still smitten with him.

Return to the Roaring Twenties for another epic romance that will keep you guessing.

BESIDE THE DEAD by Mary Alford, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Wow, this was a very complex story with a very evil villain.

Harrison, from the first book in the series Among The Innocent, fled to Alaska and became a private investigator. A search for a girl missing for over 30 years brings him to Evergreen Falls Maine, where he finds another girl that has escaped from a bunker where she was held for years.

This was a very exciting story with lots of possible perpetrators and danger at every turn. In a relatively small area, everyone knows everyone else and there are many connections. Even the deputy chief of police, Samantha, has a sister, who went missing around the same time as the woman that Harrison is searching for.

With many twists and turns and a snowstorm that makes things difficult, the cops combat explosions and shootings to uncover the truth.

This was a very suspenseful story that adds to the first book in the series and promises more revelations in the next book.

An Emily Dickinson Mystery Book 3
PAULA'S REVIEW:
This book is part of a series, but it is the first one that I have read by this author. It is an interesting concept to have Emily Dickinson and her maid Willa investigate a crime.

The story was intriguing and gave the flavor of Amherst, Massachusetts and the community at the college. The writing was informative, interesting, and entertaining. Since this was a general market book, it had a faint faith thread showing the church caring about an orphan and the poor people facing the cold in the midst of a blizzard. The author portrayed Willa the maid as a friend of Emily, who helped sleuth and was a companion. But also that the family and especially the other servant frowned on the friendship.

This was a clean read, in spite of mentioning unfaithful spouses. It is a unique concept that has Emily ferreting out clues, even as she stopped short in order to write the words of her poems that are clamoring to be released from her brain.
This was a quick and interesting story.

WHISPERS OF FORTUNE by Mary Connealy, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

WINNIE'S REVIEW:

Set in the hills of California in 1874, Mary Connealy’s newest book, Whispers of Fortune, starts a new series, Golden State Treasure. Connealy takes a couple of runaway boys, a worried brother who is looking for them, an orphanage director, and various other intriguing characters and mixes them up together, plops them down in riveting situations, and then proceeds to bring them all out—mostly safe and sound. With the most dastardly of villains and the most heroic of main characters, the reader can boo, hiss, sigh, and swoon to their heart’s content.

Ellie Hart is a compassionate, intelligent heroine who operates the orphanage at Two Harts Ranch. When doctor Brody MacKenzie comes barging to the ranch looking for his two runaway brothers, Ellie talks him into staying for a while to act as the ranch doctor. The two boys have their MacKenzie grandfather’s old journal with clues to where treasure is hidden. They figure it’s somewhere in the vicinity of the Two Harts Ranch and want Brody to help them find it. Of course, some villains are involved in trying to find the treasure, also.

With Connealy’s signature wit and humor, this book was a treat to read. It can be read as a stand alone, but it does have a bit of a hanging thread which continues to the next book. I enjoyed seeing some of the characters from her other series popping up in this one. I’m looking forward to Josh Hart’s story coming up next.

STORM WARNING by Elizabeth Goddard, Reviewed by Rebecca and Paula #ReleaseDay

(Hidden Bay Book #1): (Christian Romantic Suspense Thriller with
Mystery and Survival Set at a Washington Storm Lodge)

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"She just had to focus and climb. She'd be up on top soon. Otherwise, she'd be swept away forever."

Remi Grant's efforts to rescue a little dog along the rocky cliffs of the Washington coast was a race against tides, and one that Remi was in present danger of losing . . . until the strong hand of a total stranger pulls her to safety . . . setting off a series of events that makes Remi wonder if she really wants to remember what her mind is determined to forget.

Former military pilot Hawk Beckett has come to the Cedar Trails Lodge to adjust his outlook on the future. When he sees the lodge manager dangling off the rungs of a shredded rope ladder, he springs into action. But it's obvious the lady is suspicious underneath her polite gratitude. It doesn't take long before the two are thrown together again; Hawk manages to save Remi's life for the second time in one day.

What is going on?

With dizzying speed, this story jumps headfirst into a labyrinth of forgotten details, frantic determinations to sort out the truth, and an assortment of players whose motives remain tucked in the shadows. Following its rapid launch, the action decelerates into a comfortable, but mildly predictable holding pattern before accelerating again towards a didn't-see-that-coming kind of landing. Fans of romantic suspense . . . hang on for the ride!

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was a page turner from the get-go, with nonstop, action and heart pounding scenes of danger.

Remi has hidden at Cedar Trails Lodge in the Pacific Northwest for two years, trying to recoup her memories after a close call with death. The storm of the decade is approaching, but so is someone who is after Remi, urging her to remember before it’s too late. Hawk comes to her rescue more than once, and he becomes the one person she can trust.

This plot was very complicated with many twists and uncertainty lurking in the background. The characters were focused on doing the right thing, even with limited knowledge

The author gave Remi a strong faith to sustain her, even when she has gaps in her memory. Hawk is weaker in his faith, but it grows as the story unfolds. They rely on God when things get tough and boy do they get tough

Riveting, action, and things that are not what they seem had me turning pages until the end.

Closed Door RomCom with a Librarian Heroine

REBECCA'S REVIEW
" . . . books are more than just paper and ink. They're a portal leading to anywhere you ever wanted to go - heart, mind, or soul."

So anyone who would dare to dog-ear the pages of one of Evangeline Kelly's books (well not her books exactly, but the books in the library where she so dutifully presided) . . . "pistols at dawn" . . . for the perpetrator.

The presumed culprit? Tai Davis, a local tattoo artist with mischief in his eyes, a questionable reputation (not anymore . . . that was years ago, thank you very much) and enough charisma to charm a snake . . . which Evangeline clearly was not . . . interested. Little did they know, the lovely librarian and the flirting artist were destined to form a partnership (definitely not a dating relationship, according to the bookworm), of the matchmaking kind.

On one level this story absolutely qualifies as an entertaining romantic comedy with witty exchanges between ingenious characters sporting lightning speed chemistry. However, on a much deeper level; which actually sets this book apart, is the extent to which the author explores beneath the surface, using gentle precision to uncover emotions that desperately need the light of unconditional love to fully showcase their merit. With great success!

"God is the lover of your soul, Evangeline. He woos you every single day of your life . . . And nothing can change that. . . . He'll love you for all time."

Can a librarian's matchmaking mischief lead to a love that rewrites their stories?

If the covers of every romance book ever published didn't convince librarian Evangeline Kelly that she isn't heroine material, her fiancé calling off their wedding when she lost her hair to alopecia did. But what's a girl head over heels for love to do when her feelings are unrequited? Matchmake, that's what. Armed with library patrons' check-out histories, she's determined to make at least one love connection--even if it's not her own.

Tattoo artist Tai Davis is used to people judging him with a single glance, so it doesn't surprise him when the town's quirky new librarian believes his bad-boy reputation without giving him a chance. He can't help being intrigued by her, though, so when he discovers Evangeline's secret matchmaking scheme, he's not above striking a bargain with her. She just has to agree to one date with him for every time she uses his hometown knowledge to set up library patrons on a romantic rendezvous. The deal is made, but in the process, they both might learn you can't judge a book--or each other--by the cover

THE SCARLET RIBBON by Naomi Stephens, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Sparked by the story of Rahab in the Bible, this story follows the long journey of Rebekah from her fall from grace to her redemption at the battle of Stony Point during the Revolutionary War.

Some situations were hard to read about, such as prostitution, but were realistically portrayed. The descriptive language put me right in the battles and had me empathizing with the characters.

Rebecca was put in an impossible place of her own making, alienating her father. But Reverend Wainwright continue to pray for her and encouraged her to return to Christ. She was caught between the British Loyalists and found herself helping a Patriot spy. There were lots of tense moments that kept the story exciting.

VALENTINE ROMANCE FAVORITES with Kim and Rebecca!

💗💗They didn't have to think twice!!💗💗

KIM'S CHOICE:
For me, it’s Love You, Truly by Susan Tuttle. It’s one of my favorite stories ever. It is romantic and has a great salvation scene!

REBECCA'S CHOICE
When I think of romantic stories, I think of Becky Wade. I have not only read all of her books, I have read them more than once.

If I were to choose a favorite, based on the number of those re-reads, it would have to be "A Love Like Ours". Lyndie James' sweet, patient spirit penetrates the walls of darkness and trauma that have become a fortress around the heart of her once-best-friend Jake Porter. The result becomes "a love like ours".

and this is why...

Kim's Review of LOVE YOU, TRULY
I can’t say often that a fiction book has changed me, but Love You, Truly by Susan Tuttle has! I loved this book! It is has romance, humor, character growth, a fun storyline, and a wonderful message of God’s love. But, there is also a depth to it that totally took me by surprise.

Susan Tuttle has such a way with words that she makes you feel the way the characters are feeling. I laughed and shed a few tears right along with Blake and Harlow. This story also has the most touching, tear inducing salvation seen I’ve ever read. I literally got chill bumps.

In a word, the story is about love. Yes, it’s a love story between Blake and Harlow, but more than that, Susan Tuttle has shown the love of God beautifully. She has shown the fruits of the Spirit in action and I am praying this story gets into the hands of everyone who needs it- which is everyone! Love You, Truly is definitely one of my top books of the year!

Rebecca's Review of A LOVE LIKE OURS
Tall, dark and brooding, Jake Porter is a study in contrasts. Admirable, accomplished and handsome on the outside, but so miserable, guilt-ridden and utterly broken on the inside that he can hardly manage any measurable human contact. Enter Lyndie James; beautiful, imaginative, free-spirited Lyndie; Jake's childhood friend who has dared to re-enter his life twenty years after exiting. Lyndie arrives back in Texas with her family after living in California for years; padding her resume as a horse trainer with the best stables in the area, and she eagerly seeks employment at Whispering Creek Ranch; exercising Jake's magnificent thoroughbreds and continuing her career as a writer and illustrator of children's books.

Lyndie takes Jake's breath away; his first reaction is to shove her into the dark recesses of his mind and heart where she belongs, but he cannot ignore her talent on a horse and reluctantly agrees to hire her. When Lyndie decides that God has placed her in a position to not only motivate Jake's skittish stallion Silver Leaf to race, but to infiltrate Jake's thick post traumatic stress disorder barriers, the two are poised for an adventure that could have disastrous results in the short term. Or just perhaps, a love like theirs, could last a lifetime, with the miracle of God's faithfulness.

Becky Wade's third installment in the Porter family series is both thought provoking and heart-breaking, but utterly worth the trail of tears that these two endearing characters must face. And . . . there is a bonus feature . . . Amber Richardson . . . has her second chance at love.

BackCover Blurb:
Former Marine Jake Porter has far deeper scars than the one that marks his face. He struggles with symptoms of PTSD, lives a solitary life, and avoids relationships.

Lyndie is tender-hearted, fiercely determined, and afraid of nothing, just like she was as a child. Jake pairs her with Silver Leaf, a horse full of promise but lacking in results, hoping she can solve the mystery of the stallion's reluctance to run.

Though Jake and Lyndie have grown into very different adults, the bond that existed during their childhood still ties them together. Against Jake's will, Lyndie's sparkling, optimistic personality begins to tear down the walls he's built around his heart. A glimmer of the hope he'd thought he'd lost returns, but fears and regrets still plague him. Will Jake ever be able to love Lyndie like she deserves, or is his heart too shattered to mend?

UNEASY STREET by Becky Wade, Reviewed by Kim #ReleaseDay

KIM'S REVIEW:

I have really enjoyed each story in the Sons of Scandal series. Uneasy Street has so many things I love in a romance! it has great characters, banter, humor, complex family relationships, faith, and lessons on forgiveness.

I absolutely loved Max! He’s the perfect swoony male character that I look for in my romance novels. He’s confident, smart, funny, kind, and caring. I loved the slow progression of his and Sloane’s relationship and their chemistry was off the charts- or as Ivy would say, “spark-y!” Sloane is a bit of a complex character due to her family history. Her growth throughout the story felt real and believable. I really enjoyed Ivy’s character, her story, and how it ended. One of my favorite things about this novel is the lesson on forgiving versus not forgiving and how that could affect your life.

AS SURE AS THE SEA by Jamie Ogle, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Through the captivating words of Ms Ogle, I was transported to 310 AD and the early Christian church. Newly appointed Bishop, Nikolas, was sent to Myra in Greece where the persecuted church needed to meet in secret. But even in the dire, lean times, they had a solid hope in Christ. The author weaves an exceptional story of faith amidst danger and poverty, but showed that the people came together and shared the wealth of the gospel and the hope of the world to come. “This earthly life is short and full of strife, but there is a better, truer one coming. Let us set our gaze there.”

“The Lord has prepared work for each of us and while we have breath, we have purpose.”

There is a clear gospel message that should provide inspiration for all of us. Even in adversity, there is hope in Christ. These characters counted it an act of worship to care for those in need.
So many worthwhile themes are shown: forgiveness, faith, repentance, redemption, clear biblical teaching, and unfailing reliance on Christ and His word.

This was an excellent story of the early Christians, with the added romance of Demi and Nikolas that enhanced the lessons we could all profit from.

Also interesting was the culture of the era and the occupation of diving for coral which added to the atmosphere. This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Good thing, Sallie is an animal whisperer. It turns out she can tame the human beast, Caleb, as well as horses and bulls.

This was a great story, based on Beauty and the Beast, and set in Montana in 1871. With believable characters, excitement, and a heroine, with a strong faith, this slant on the fairytale boasts a huge library that catches the interest of Sallie.

Beauty and the Beast

How can a beauty save a beast?

Blue Spruce, Montana, 1871—When Caleb Orson's prize stallion escapes his ranch, Sal Beauregard rides to the rescue, revealing her true identity as a one of the few eligible females in town. She'd do it again if it meant saving an animal from the cruel retaliation of Brendan Doran. The man has no respect for women or God's creatures.

But the sun's early setting strands her at Caleb's ranch. Worse, Sallie's father unceremoniously leaves her there under Caleb's protection. However, Doran refuses to lose again to Caleb---first a horse, now a woman. He wants Sallie as his wife, and not even the reclusive ogre of a cowboy can stand in his way. No matter Sallie's opinion.

Choosing to make the best of a difficult situation, Sallie takes over the gentling of Caleb's stallion. She believes she can reach Caleb as well. Only, the first blush of friendship grows into something ... more. Something that threatens the desires of Caleb's enemy. And if Doran cannot have a beauty like Sallie, neither can a beast.

GRANDMA RUTH DOESN'T GO TO FUNERALS by Sharon Mondragon, Reviewed by Rebecca #ReleaseDay

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I am Sarah Elizabeth, Grandma Ruth's favorite granddaughter."

Living the role of Grandma Ruth's favorite means that Sarah doesn't always have a lot of free time . . . running all over town at her beloved grandma's bidding (after working full time hours as an accountant)and yes . . . attending funerals in her stead, only to come home and share every detail of the elaborate event . . . every single little detail.

There was one funeral in particular that catapulted to extreme importance, because the widow (a very close friend of Grandma Ruth) had become utterly distraught over her husband's last words, which made those words in question extremely important to Grandma Ruth, which in turn made them a priority for Sarah Elizabeth too  . . . to "investigate", no gossip allowed, only conversations that qualified as investigative.

In addition to her newly minted role as the household detective, Sarah is juggling her personal life, or lack thereof, while trying to side step set-ups by the grandmothers (now there were two seniors interested in her love life). Was that a bad thing? Time would tell.

This charming ode to southern grandmothers is absolutely delightful in every way on every page. Case closed!

In a small town where gossip flows like sweet tea, bedridden Mary Ruth McCready reigns supreme, doling out wisdom and meddling in everyone's business with a fervor that would make a matchmaker blush. When her best friend, Charlotte Harrington, has her world rocked by a scandalous revelation from her dying husband P. B., Mary Ruth kicks into high gear, commandeering the help of her favorite granddaughter, Sarah Elizabeth, in tracking down the truth. Finding clues in funeral condolence cards and decades-old gossip dredged up at the Blue Moon Beauty Emporium, the two stir up trouble faster than you can say "pecan pie."

And just when things are starting to look up, in waltzes Camilla "Millie" Holtgrew, a blast from P. B.'s past, with a grown son and an outrageous claim to Charlotte's inheritance. But as Grandma Ruth always says when things get tough, "God is too big." With him, nothing is impossible--even bringing long-held secrets to light. Grandma Ruth and Sarah just might have to ruffle a whole mess of feathers to do it.

DOORS THE THE PAST SERIES #Six

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Lucy Conroy had been at the Pinnacle of her profession. So what had happened?"

When nationally recognized mystery writer Chloe Whitfield arrives at the legendary winter residence of John and Mable Ringling in Sarasota, Florida for a writing retreat of sorts, she never imagined to be sidetracked by the story of her own great grandmother, Lucinda Conroy, a famed trapeze artist with the famous circus. Rumored to have stolen valuable property, then disappearing without a trace, Chloe found it difficult to believe that Lucinda's story had come to such an abrupt ending.

Using every resource that the archives of the historic residence had to offer, including the knowledge of one Dr. Ian Flanner, who was busy overseeing crucial renovations to the property, Chloe yields to her curiosity and begins to turn back the pages of history and ends up making a startling discovery; both personally and professionally.

The characters on both sides of these timelines are equally engaging, generating enough mystique to to celebrate the answer of exactly what happened to Lucinda Convoy. A well written addition to this series.

BackCover Blurb:
In 1936--A party at the Ringling mansion Ca d’Zan in Sarasota, Florida, leads to a robbery--and possibly death.

A successful historical mystery writer, Chloe Whitfield comes to Ca’ d’Zan to research her next novel. Chloe’s fascination with the circus is rooted in family stories of her great-grandmother Lucinda Conroy, who reportedly was a trapeze artist of some renown. She’s heard hints of scandal—and perhaps larceny, but no details.

Chloe’s grandmother—rumored to be Lucinda’s only offspring—was raised in an orphanage and never knew her mother. Intrigued as she is, Chloe has no intent of writing about Lucinda until she sees a poster featuring Lucinda as the star performer for a 70th birthday gala for John Ringling in May of 1936. From there the trail goes cold.

Who was Lucinda and what happened to her?

THE INDIGO HEIRESS by Laura Frantz, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
“What we once loved can never be lost to us—it is ours forever.”

I always eagerly await each new novel by talented author Laura Frantz. With rich historical detail, obvious impeccable research, and colorful, well-crafted characters that come alive on the page, her stories always transport me to other times and places. Set in colonial Virginia and Glasgow, Scotland at the cusp of the Revolutionary War, The Indigo Heiress is another fantastic, riveting tale that kept me engrossed and turning pages. I was fascinated learning about the cultivation of indigo in Virginia and the tobacco merchants of Scotland.

Frantz is a master at creating memorable characters, and Juliet Catesby and Leith Buchanan are no exceptions. Juliet is competent, feisty, and compassionate, while Leith has a tortured past which keeps him from fully enjoying life. It was a treat to see their relationship grow and change.

The epigraphs at the beginning of the chapters were a lovely touch, and the author’s notes at the end of the book were very interesting. Having traveled to Glasgow, Scotland before, I enjoyed learning about the city as it was in 1774.

With lots of history, suspense, adventure, and a dash of romance, this was a very satisfying tale rich in healing, faith, and hope. I always learn so much about historical places and events in this author’s stories. I’m looking forward to seeing what her next book brings.

Confident it will be her younger, lovelier sister, Juliet is appalled when Leith Buchanan selects her instead.

Despite her initial refusal, Juliet realizes that fleeing Virginia is her only choice after finding herself in the midst of a scandal. The ship just leaving the harbor for Glasgow is her only hope. THE HUNTED HEIR by Jayna Breigh, Reviewed by Winnie and Rebecca #NewRelease

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
What do you get when you mix a legal suspense story with a romantic comedy? You get talented author Jayna Breigh’s debut novel, The Hunted Heir. I was expecting the mystery and suspense part, but the witty, amusing banter between DeMarcus and Nona and the entertaining, humorous observations by G’Mama surprised and delighted me.

“G’Mama would have been a good attorney. She’d let DeMarcus off the hook, then circle back around to the topic like an old fox trying to steal chickens from a coop.”

“God plus one is a majority. He’ll never leave you or forsake you. And he’s enough.”

The characters in this book are well-drawn and multi-layered. I enjoyed their interactions and the way they changed and grew. The fake engagement between Demarcus and Nona was a fun addition and gave some comic relief to the seriousness of the suspense.

“Sticky tape and gum held their fake engagement together. . .”

“She had him boxed up so tightly in the frenemy zone, it was cutting off his circulation.”

The story is well-written and kept me turning the pages. It held my interest throughout and was a perfect blend of a captivating plot, compelling characters, and some swoony romance. I’m looking forward to reading more books by this author.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Another New Year's Eve, and Nona Taylor's prayer remained unanswered. Still."

Nona's fledgling private investigation business was hanging on by a thread, and now she was mentally preparing herself to face the Lord above in hopes that somehow this would be the year that she could lay her burden down. Never in Nona's wildest dreams did she imagine that agreeing to a small favor for Pastor Grant would introduce her to the one and only (or so he thought!) DeMarcus Johnson . . . who in her moment of peril (perceived or actual) became her fake fiance. And that ball just kept rolling . . .

On a more serious note, Pastor Grant had indeed received a piece of correspondence that could either be legitimate or part of an identity scam; was it possible that he was heir to a fortune? Nona was determined to find out. Meanwhile, DeMarcus just happened to need a competent investigator while he tries to settle a legal matter for his boss, in hopes that his dream of becoming a partner in the law firm comes to fruition. Things get a little dicey when Nona cannot wiggle out of her "engagement", and the pastor's case gets curiouser and curiouser  . . . all while Mr. "Big Head" Johnson keeps pushing the charm button  . . . wait, stop the bus! . . . G'Mama has all the answers . . . it's the Bible.

Filled with just the right amounts of snark, suspense and substance, this story just kept right on going, every chapter as interesting or even more interesting than the one before; pairing sweet doses of authenticity with generous portions of humble pie. The spiritual truths were amazing, the characters endearing, and the actual mystery? . . . keenly plotted. I loved every minute of time spent in this book!
