EVERY DOG HAS HIS DAY by Janice Thompson, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

GONE TO THE DOGS Mystery Series #5

I’ve gotten away from the more intense suspense novels lately, but still like the whodunit aspect of a mystery. I’d say this fun cozy fit the bill for me! First, you have a cute mischievous dachshund named Ginger and sweet dog groomer Isabelle who falls in love with her. All is well until Texans quarterback Corey Wallis claims the pup is his and offers up a reward for her return. She goes missing before he can get her back and that’s when mayhem ensues and the mystery begins! Who took her and why?

I loved trying to figure this one out; which I never did until the end. I also loved getting to know the characters, and want to go back and read the previous books. This kept me engaged, interested and of course Ginger sweetened the pot! If you enjoy cozy mysteries with a side of romance, I think you will love Every Dog Has His Day!

part of The Deadly Decisions Collection

Wow! After all my crazy guesses and suspicions, I didn’t see that one coming! This is exactly how I felt as I got to the end of The Vow by D. L. Wood!! I was hooked from the very first chapter and needed to know just who was stalking Kate and why! There are so many chapter cliffhangers in this story that you’ll be saying “one more chapter” all night long! This story was so suspenseful and kept me guessing until the very end. I was completely shocked when it all played out like it did!
D. L. Wood is a must read suspense author! Every story I’ve read of hers has been so good and so suspenseful and they always include a shocking twist or two! I’ll definitely be reading all of her backlist! Highly recommended! 4.5 stars.

THE RANCHER'S SANCTUARY by Linda Goodnight, Reviewed by Kim

Sundown Valley Book 5 - part of the
K-9 Companions Series from Love Inspired

While I only read a few LIS authors, I’ve been hearing some good things about Linda Goodnight, so I decided to give her a try. I am so glad I did because I really enjoyed The Rancher’s Sanctuary. I enjoyed the romance and banter between Monroe and Nathan, the pops of humor, and the mystery surrounding the deaths of Nathan’s parents.

I also really liked Ms. Goodnight’s writing style. My one minor complaint is that I felt like Monroe’s defensiveness towards Nathan went on for a little bit too long. I did enjoy how she eventually came around and came to peace with her scars. The faith thread in this story was also really good. I will definitely be looking forward to reading more stories by Ms. Goodnight!

*I purchased this book. All opinions are my own. The faith thread is light. 4 stars!

LIGHTHOUSE LANE SERIES by Irene Hannon, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Rebecca purchased and read all four of Irene Hannon's Encore Editions of this Lighthouse Lane series. Here are her reviews!

ONCE UPON NANTUCKET
"Half an hour ago, he didn't know the woman existed. Yet in the course of one brief conversation, she'd managed to rouse a boatload of emotions in him - most of which were best left undisturbed."

Katherine MacDonald was feisty, Nantucket Coast Guard Lieutenant Craig Cole could certainly credit her with dogged determination . . . but it was the sudden bolt of attraction that hounded him long after her tirade about a frivolous citation (her opinion, not his) landed on his desk. He could handle the black and white rules of regulations, but a beautiful woman? . . . he had better steer that particular ship to a safer harbor . . . except that . . .

. . . they seemed to keep running into each other. Katherine managed to teach part-time, own and maintain and captain her own charter fishing boat, take good care of her four year old daughter, and who knew what else? Thankfully she was as guarded about personal relationships as Craig . . . or as he was trying to be.

This light, easy-to-read story is as delightful as you would expect it to be!

THE HERO NEXT DOOR
"As best as he could calculate, his foray into the world of afternoon tea had cost him close to two dollars a bite."

Arriving in Nantucket with an appetite, Justin Clay was pleased to see that the house beside his small rental appeared to be a restaurant. Well it was, and then again it wasn't. Filled to the brim with women enjoying fancy finger sandwiches and tiny dessert bites, the most memorable thing about the experience(before he headed to a local burger joint for some real food) was meeting the lovely Heather Anderson, the tea room (so, that was what it was called) owner.

Shaking hands with the handsome Chicago police detective had given Heather a jolt . . . of . . . dare she define it as attraction? This was the man her neighbor had mentioned being in their cottage for the next three months? As if the day time introduction wasn't enough to give her heartbeat an uptick, then their unexpected evening investigation into a suspicious rattle in her back yard, trash cans, and feral cats would seal the deal. Heather had no way of knowing that God had sent the very person whom she would need the most . . . right next door.

What a delightful community of characters whose lives intersect across the backyards of life!

"All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ." Ephesians 4:31,32

MEANT FOR EACH OTHER

"The woman was crying . . . And as he'd learned to his regret, crying women were a disaster waiting to happen."

Dr. Christopher Morgan had not meant to stare, but the gorgeous woman crying alone at her table in the Nantucket eatery was hard to ignore. What were the chances of ever seeing her again? Slim to none, so in spite of his compassionate nature, Chris chose not to intervene. Imagine his surprise when an entirely different set of circumstances brought them face to face . . . in fact, very face to face.

Marci Clay is thankful for a respite from her years of studying hard and working even harder. She finally has her masters degree in social work, and before having to decide what to do next, she has the opportunity to stay in Nantucket for six weeks, courtesy of her older brother J. C. When a very sore throat and an always-means-well neighbor put her in close proximity with Dr. Christopher Morgan, Marci's well constructed emotional walls automatically rise to the occasion. Why start something that will be impossible to finish?

The sweetest of stories! You cannot help but love Marci, Chris, Chris' elderly confidante and mentor- neighbor Henry, and yes, even Edith . . . doing what Edith does best . . . combined with God's gentle Spirit drawing Marci unto Himself . . . and giving Chris an opportunity to demonstrate grace.

A FATHER FOR ZACH
"Sometimes providence steps in where we fear to tread."

Is that what had just happened? Did Nathan Clay's appearance in Catherine Walker's life mean that God was re-directing her fears, gently forcing her focus towards the future rather than allowing her to remain glued to the past? Would it be an easy transition? Absolutely not.

Having been incarcerated for ten years, Nathan Clay has recently been granted his freedom and is ready to begin a new life in a new place; thankfully, his brother and sister are supporting his efforts by providing him with a three month stay in Nantucket. Using his carpentry skills to help Catherine Walker begin her own re-start on the island, Nathan never expected to feel such an intense attraction to the beautiful widow and her precocious six year old son. Unfortunately, his dark shadows align a little too closely with Catherine's deepest trauma, producing the potential for a whole lot of heartache.

"There are a lot of ways to be in prison that don't involve metal bars."

Another fabulous story from an author who has an uncanny ability to write light, enjoyable reads with exceptional depth . . . the pages virtually turned themselves.

IN THE SHELTER OF HOLLYTHORNE HOUSE by Sarah E. Ladd, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

The Houses of Yorkshire Series Book 2

An atmospheric tale of the moors of Yorkshire in 1817.

Seemingly wealthy widow Charlotte Prior is forced to flee to her childhood home, Hollythorne House, to safeguard her infant son. Her husband left debts and dangerous angry men mean to collect. Anthony Welbourne, back from the war, is tasked with protecting Charlotte and her son. They parted ways years ago before Anthony went to war since their families were at odds. They are naturally wary of each other.

Full of danger, mystery and a rekindled romance, this book pulled me in with its descriptions and well developed characters. The hero is upright and courageous. The heroine is determined and brave. The writing flowed effortlessly and the story was interesting.

I enjoyed this trip back in time.

A young widow faces an uncertain future . . . until an unexpected encounter with her first love gives her heart a second chance in this Regency romance set on the Yorkshire Moors.

England, 1817—Charlotte Grey thought she had seen the last of Anthony Welbourne. Knowing her father would never consent to his only daughter marrying a man he deemed beneath their family’s station, Charlotte bid her final farewell to Anthony and vowed never to turn back. Instead, she honored her father’s wishes by marrying the wealthy Roland Prior.

Determined to put his love for Charlotte in the past, Anthony chose to immerse himself in a life full of meaning—first as a soldier fighting a war overseas, then as a member of William Walstead’s watchmen, a rugged band of men dispatched to deal with perilous situations. Fearless and persistent, he makes it his life’s focus to fight for those who can’t fight for themselves.

When Charlotte’s husband dies unexpectedly, she quickly realizes how blind she’d been to his nefarious ambitions and how many people he’d angered on his relentless quest for wealth. To protect her infant son, Henry, from those who wish him harm, she and the baby flee to Hollythorne House, her childhood home. There Charlotte comes face-to-face with her former love, who has been sent as one of the hired watchman to protect her and Henry until the details of her late husband’s estate are settled.

Anthony’s presence brings back feelings she never expected to have again, and she struggles to trust his intentions. Are the watchmen really looking after Charlotte as they claim—or are they looking to make trouble for Roland’s estate and heir? Despite the constant reminders of their past, Anthony must remain focused on the task he was hired to do. But when new threats emerge and the past collides with the present, both must decide what they are willing to risk for the chance to right old wrongs and carve out a new future . . . together.

THE ALL AMERICAN by Susie Finkbeiner, Reviewed by Rebecca and Winnie

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"And no matter how many times they mowed those daisies down, they always came back, star-shine in a sea of green. "

"When I was seven years old, I told my parents that what I wanted to do when I grew up was to play baseball for the Workington Sweet Peas. Dad - one prone to audacious dreams - had been thrilled. Mom had been less excited."

Two sisters; growing up in what they imagined to be the all-American family. Flossie and Bertha were as different as night and day; Flossie loved books, Bertha loved baseball. When unfortunate rumors accusing their father, a highly prominent author, of misguided political leanings, their lives were forced to pivot in a totally different direction. While their story ended up including a number of unexpected chapters, the outcome also held many unexpected blessings . . . except for one. It seems that the best stories don't always end with "happily-ever-after", if they end at all.

Told in a captivating scene-change style, the two sisters' perspectives flow seamlessly throughout this coming of age narrative, managing to simultaneously delight and distress its readers. While I originally supposed this story was primarily about one sister, it may have been about the other . . . which did not dawn on me until the very end.

WINNIE'S REVIEW
I love how Susie Finkbeiner can take a little slice of history and totally immerse the reader in that time period so they feel they’re living in it. I know Finkbeiner isn’t old enough to have been alive in the 1950s, but she captures the feeling of it perfectly. I grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, so it was a little nostalgic for me.

The characters are perfect—well-written, engaging, and endearing. I immediately felt drawn to them, although, unlike Bertha, I don’t have an athletic bone in my body. My favorite character was Flossie. I loved her sass and humor and her outlook on life. She fit the “youngest child” depiction perfectly.

I enjoyed Finkbeiner’s fun sense of humor, which lightened up some of the rather serious subject matter. I recommend this book to those who enjoy fantastic historical fiction.

It was fun to be back in FairPlay, Colorado to see what the sisters at the boarding house were up to.

Charity seems to be in charge and struggles to make ends meet as she has an inherited debt hanging over her head. Enter arrogant Hudson Boyston Vanderwater III, who almost always gets what he wants. He is sympathetic to the troubles Charity and her sisters have, but Charity is not willing to accept any assistance. She prefers to handle it herself. She thinks Hudson only wants part of her land to further his railroad venture.

Two stubborn people clash in a war of wits. Sparks fly when Hudson, in an attempt to appease her independent spirit, hires Charity to accompany him to a charity event.

BREAK OF DAY (Annie Pederson Series #3) by Colleen Coble, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"You're a good man, Jon Dunstan. We've upended your life in every way possible, yet here you are still helping and encouraging. I don't deserve you."

"You have that backward. I'm the one who doesn't deserve the two of you."

Annie Pederson and Jon Dunstan's story had not been conventional by any stretch of the imagination. He'd loved her, left her, and returned back to her . . . meeting the young daughter whom he never knew existed prior to a celiac disease diagnosis that brought the three of them together. Annie's life as a law enforcement officer had long been shadowed by a tragic family mystery, which once solved had recently brought additional heartache. Now, before the two can even take a few steps in the direction of "happily ever after", people start disappearing in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Unfortunately, there's the real fear that Annie's sister Sarah could be next.

For a while, connecting all the dots and correctly placing the numerous characters within this story line was a bit distracting. Multiple moving parts left a lot to figure out, which ultimately collided with a whopper of an ending, more heinous that I would have ever expected, making the last act a quintessential climax and my mental efforts well worth reading the book.

"One word kept reverberating in his head: trust. Trust Annie, yes. But even more, he needed to trust God for this situation. It was the hardest thing he'd ever done. Somehow, they needed to get out of here . . . but the outlook was so bleak that it was hard to hang on to faith."

IN THIS MOMENT by Gabrielle Meyer, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

“None of us are independent of the ones we love. We’re woven together like a big tapestry, with each color unique and vibrant, but making a larger picture possible.”

Talented author Gabrielle Meyer has penned another fantastic story in her Timeless series. In This Moment has the heroine living in three different history-changing timelines. The premise is very creative and takes her first book in the series, When the Day Comes, a bit further with an extra timeline.

Meyer did an excellent job of combining the timelines and making them each interesting, historically accurate, and easy to follow. The characters are well-drawn and multi-layered, and I found myself drawn to them.

My interest was captured from the first page and held throughout the tale trying to guess which path Maggie would choose to stay in. Lots of twists and turns kept the plot moving along.

“Life is a gift and an adventure. We should never let fear hold us back from doing the things God has called us to do. The risk isn’t always in going, sometimes the risk is in staying and missing out on the journey.”

After finding pictures of the Crawford family strewn across a vicious cartel leader's desk, Jude decides to follow up personally, quietly, unobtrusively . . . oh, who is he kidding? Seeing Andi again after so many years was going to be as difficult as his case might turn out to be, because technically someone in her family could end up being connected . . . please, say no.

RISING DANGER by Jerusha Agen, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

GUARDIANS UNLEASHED SERIES

"Chaos assaulted her as soon as she opened the door."

Could it have been avoided? Maybe, but probably not. Bristol Bachmann and her specially trained black Labrador retriever were prepared to locate and disarm, if necessary, explosive devices; with an entire dam full of water tottering on the brink of disaster, time was of the essence. They had been warned, which was disconcerting enough, but nothing had prepared Bristol for what happened next, or should she say, "who".

"Even in Rem's wildest dreams, he never would have thought a bomb would bring Bristol Bachmann back into his life." In charge of dam safety and security for the Twin Cities area of Minnesota, Remington Jones had been working hard to re-establish his life in a positive trajectory. There was no time to waste reminiscing about the mistakes of his past, Bristol and Rem had an environmental terrorist on their hands whose message had been clear, "the river must be freed, no matter the cost".

When the perpetrator sets his sights on Bristol and her dog, the entire Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency rallies to her aid, but it's Remington who is trying his best to demonstrate that a man can change; supporting Bristol in any way that he can, believing that second chances are possible, craving a happy ending. . . but perfection is a pretty unrealistic goal . . . and it seems that Bristol will accept nothing less.

"You can't save everyone. Only God can, and that's a good thing because He is good. Only God can take things that are bad and make them into something good, something beautiful."

As the waters of difficulty and despair seem to rise above all hope, this novel is a poignant reminder that God's love transcends mistakes, regrets, and misunderstanding. A thriller of a story!

BackCover Blurb:

It’s up to a K-9 handler and her canine partner to stop a bomber before it’s too late.

Someone’s planting explosives on dams in the Twin Cities, and Bristol Bachmann and her bomb-sniffing dog must move quickly to find them before everything ends up underwater. That means relying on the dams’ supervisor—an ex-boyfriend Bristol never thought she’d see again. Hopefully Remington Jones has grown up from the rakish charmer she knew in her academy days. Because lives now depend entirely on them…

It’s an environmental terrorist who wants the dams gone, and his bid to set the waters free has lethal consequences. When he sees Bristol and her K-9 working to stop him, he sets his sights on them. Can they evade him in a lethal game of cat and mouse and protect the cities from devastating destruction before the clock runs out?

A thrilling must-read novel from Love Inspired: Stories to Uplift and Inspire.

REFUGE FOR THE ARCHAEOLOGIST by Danielle Grandinetti, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

HARBORED IN CROWS NEST SERIES #2

Set in Crows Nest, Wisconsin in 1930, this is a story that highlights Cora Davis and her brain injury acquired when she experienced an earthquake during an archeological dig in Italy.

Cora visits her Aunt Rose to rest and recuperate. She meets Silas Ward, a local carpenter and handyman who looks out for her aunt.

Filled with intrigue, excitement, a great romantic hero, faith and family values, this book checks all the boxes of a well plotted and interesting story. I enjoyed the historical details woven in such as an old desk with a secret compartment. I especially liked Aunt Rose with her insight and wisdom. This author has become a favorite with her relatable characters and fascinating plots.

A great addition to the series. I cannot wait for book #3.

GUARDING HER HEART SERIES #2

Another charming story about romance for a Batavarian guard or two. Lady Belfort, is finding positions for the guards who opted to remain in England rather than return to their homeland. Tanner is hired as a bodyguard for Mr. Hewitt, a rich businessman, who has been receiving threats. His daughter Julia is of marriageable age, so the ruse is that Tanner pose as her fiancé.

With highwaymen thrown into the mix, along with busybody neighbors, a matchmaking cat, and a balloon demonstration, this is a delightful tale of Regency England re-invented. I especially liked Mrs. Daring, companion to Julia, who quietly gives her two cents worth with pithy remarks. And of course Fortune, the cat, who reads the motives of all she meets.

I am looking forward to book three in this series.

BackCover Blurb:
A pretend engagement puts her life and his heart on the line

Kristof Tanner grew up dreaming of glorious adventures far beyond the little kingdom of Batavaria. He’s followed his king and crown prince across Europe to England, but he never expected his first position there to be guarding the daughter of a wealthy businessman, who doesn’t seem to have a care in the world. Still, it’s hard not to see adventure calling in Julia Hewett’s warm brown eyes.

Julia has been fretting under her father’s demands for years. She won’t allow him to dictate a husband, especially when he insists no less than a duke will do. So, when her father refuses to listen to her pleas, she concocts the most unsuitable engagement she can imagine—to her bodyguard. If the charming Tanner plays along, they might both get what they want.

But it soon becomes apparent that someone is stalking Julia, intent on her downfall. Tanner and Julia must work together to uncover the culprit and save her reputation and his. In doing so, they may discover that the greatest adventure of all is falling in love.

If you like warm, witty historical romances, with a touch of mystery, then you’ll love this historical romance by an award-winning, bestselling author.
