THE BURNING OF ROSEMONT ABBEY by Naomi Stephens, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

(A Whodunnit Historical Romantic
Mystery Set in 1950's England)
I was immediately pulled into this intriguing story. The setting reminds me of Father Brown mysteries in a small English village of 1956. Louisa Everly is a twin to Paul and feels as if he is dead.

Paul is missing and accused of burning down Rosemont Abbey, the Everly home until their vicar father died. Louisa has a a lot at stake and sets off to sleuth much to the consternation of Malcolm Sinclair, a childhood friend who is now a detective inspector.

The story moves quickly as Louisa finds clues, and as a result gets into trouble more than once. But never fear, Malcolm is close at hand to rescue or thwart her. A killer is still on the loose and the author did an admirable job of giving us lots of suspects.

A favorite character is Mrs. Watson, the elderly housekeeper to the vicar, who has an opinion about everything. The vicar was a solid man of faith and dispensed solid spiritual advice.

I always admire this authors writing.

Everyone in Wilbeth Green has something to hide, but she's about to uncover their secrets.

1956: In a quiet English village, the smoldering ruins of Rosemont Abbey have set the residents' tongues wagging, and everyone is quick to accuse troublemaker Paul Everly of the crime of arson. Paul has vanished without a trace, leaving only his plucky twin sister, Louisa, certain of his innocence. Fueling her conviction is an inexplicable connection--she felt her twin's death an hour before the abbey went up in flames.

Armed with nothing but her wit and her keen sense of intuition, Louisa embarks on her own investigation, challenging the dubious townspeople and the disdain of her aunt and uncle. Even Inspector Malcolm Sinclair, once Paul's closest friend, warns Louisa to abandon her pursuit. But Louisa is determined to solve a murder no one else believes was committed, even if it means unraveling secrets that could shake Wilbeth Green to its core.

A Luke Steele Novel

Marine Luke and FBI agent Amberlyn are tasked to find the instigator and motive behind the bombing of a FEMA building in Kansas City. They travel to Luke’s hometown for Amberlyn to pose as his girlfriend at his 15th High School reunion.

The stakes are high and the danger ramps up as they seek answers. Which of his old schoolmates would pull off such a diabolical plot?

The story was intricate, puzzling and fast-paced. The romance progressed steadily and the clues seem elusive. I like how Luke and Amberlyn worked together seamlessly. I also liked how the older generation of friends banded together to help the community. A scene of workers putting together packs of food to send home with needy grade school kids parallel what we do in our community. I am pleased to be a part of funding that endeavor.

This was a great story of teamwork and smarts to track down a twisted bad guy.

Marine Captain Luke Steele and FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner must work together to unravel a deadly conspiracy before time runs out while also navigating their undercover fake relationship that is becoming all too real.

When a terrorist attack grips the nation, Luke Steele, a military aide to the president of the United States, is reassigned to track down the suspect because the alleged bomber was spotted wearing a state championship ring from Luke’s hometown. Luke has desperately tried to forget his high school years, but he can’t run from them now. Instead, he must face his most formidable assignment yet: leave his post by the president’s side, return to Pine Falls, Virginia, and face every demon from his childhood—including every person and every thought that told him he wasn’t worth anything.

FBI Special Agent Amberlyn Reiner has spent years tracking domestic terrorism. When she catches a break that could pinpoint the key player in the antigovernment group responsible for dozens of needless deaths, she’s willing to do whatever it takes to get the information she seeks—even if it means going undercover as Luke Steele’s plus-one at his high school reunion. Though Amberlyn found Luke arrogant and aloof during their time together at Quantico, it doesn’t take long for her to discover that there’s much more to him than she realized. But even as the line between fact and fiction in their relationship blurs, the countdown to danger accelerates. Time is running out, and with the threat of another terrorist attack looming, the stakes are higher than ever.

SUMMERLIN GROVES by Elizabeth Camden, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

Elizabeth Camden is one of my favorite historical fiction authors, and now she’s shown that she can write fantastic, riveting contemporary fiction as well. The Summerlin orange grove located in rural Florida has been in Jenny Summerlin’s family for years when she inherits it. When a body and a treasure are found on her property, she finds herself embroiled in a mystery. Former love Wyatt Rossiter gets involved with the case, which is a complication and distraction for Jenny. I liked Jenny’s independent, hard-working spirit and her determination to make a success of the orange grove. I also liked Wyatt’s compassion and his care of Jenny.

Camden is a master at creating realistic, engaging, multi-layered characters and building fascinating, compelling plots around them. I enjoyed learning more about the challenges of orange growing, and I loved all the historical tidbits involved in the story. The mystery woven into the tale added elements of suspense and intrigue. I highly recommend this author and book to those who enjoy well-written clean and wholesome stories.

FIANCE' FINALE by Angela Ruth Strong, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt #ReleaseDay

Love Off Script #3
If you love somebody, let them go, for if they return, they were always yours. If they don’t, they never were. ~ Kahlil Gibran

The only book I read from Angela Ruth Strong is her first one in this series called “Husband Auditions” and I thought that was nothing short of amazing, but wow, this one blew me away even more! I think because it’s a second-chance romance and those are my top favorite.

So Charlie and Nicole were on their way to marital bliss years ago, but he decided making a documentary in Peru was more important. Gasp…right?!?! Oh, but it gets better, he also believes God called him to marry Nicole and that hasn’t changed at all. So, when opportunity comes to work with her and possibly walk her down the aisle for real this time, he’s certain it will work. There’s just one problem, Nicole wants nothing to do with that! You can imagine this causes all sorts of consternation. Charlie, for all his zany weirdness and blunt logic, has at least one thing to learn… how to woo a woman. Yep, that’s the magic formula that is necessary to form a lifetime commitment. Nicole wants someone who chooses her first and Charlie needs a lesson in love.

This has humor, funny banter, missteps and misunderstandings, redemption, second-chances, and a very poignant lesson that no matter what, God always chooses us! Like the parable when Jesus left the ninety-nine sheep to save the one...which is referenced multiple times. The ending made me cry so much that I was trying to read through blurry, watery eyes. It’s SO good and has such a strong reminder of how God values, cherishes, and loves us no matter our messes, mistakes or failures. Just because He has called us HIS!

My favorite parts of this book are all the love quotes before each chapter. I’m writing them all down in a notebook to ponder later on!

Charlie Newberg is sure about one thing: Nicole Lemaire is the woman God wants him to marry. There's a slight problem, though—he's already left her once. The day before their wedding. To make a documentary.

But he's got a plan. The marketing firm she works for is the ideal choice for promoting his new film. Collaborating will give him the perfect chance to propose again, so he conspires with her boss to make sure she runs the campaign for the same kind of documentary Charlie left her—basically at the altar—for.

Despite Nicole's resistance, the two work well together. But Charlie's going to need more than teamwork to convince the jilted bride to give him a second chance. In fact, he might need to fall in love in a way he's never really understood.

LOWCOUNTRY LOST by T. I. Lowe, Reviewed by Kim and Paula

KIM'S REVIEW:
I loved this story! The very first line sucked me in and I became so invested in these characters and their lives that I felt like I was living it with them. T. I. Lowe is one of my favorite authors so I expected nothing less. Everything I have read by her has been so well written and completely immersive.

I loved both Rowen and Avalee and wanted to know their entire story from beginning to end. While we eventually get it, I was flipping the pages as fast as I could to try and figure it out. I felt their heartbreak through the pages. The pain they went through and how it affected them individually and their marriage was heartbreaking. I loved watching Avalee heal and I loved how Rowan helped her through it. Speaking of Rowan, wow, what a great character! I absolutely loved his personality and his dedication to Avalee! When we find out his story of healing, my heart literally ached for him. I really enjoyed all of the secondary characters and the depth they added to this story!

Lowcountry Lost, while heavy at times, is also full of healing, humor, southern charm, and wonderful characters! Do not miss it!
*I both purchased and received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. 5 stars! The faith thread is light.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
As a co-owner of Lowcountry Lost, a company that rehabs old buildings, Avalee wears overalls and a hard hat. But below that hardhat is a hard head and a hardened and bruised heart. On the job to bring a ghost town in Somewhere, South Carolina back to life, she is shocked to find that the engineer for the project is her ex husband, Rowan Murray.

This story is a look at a painful past and how to get beyond that pain. “A new start doesn’t negate the past. It learns from the roots of history and blooms into a better version.”
Avalee compares herself to a ghost town: “once flourishing yet now just so dang exhausted.” She puts her all into the re-making of the town of Somewhere, and in the process, reclaims the love she thought she lost forever.

The characters were realistic and well drawn, the plot so interesting with the construction work needed to give the town a complete overhaul. A favorite character was Bash, a teen who helped on the crew. Preacher, the dog who liked to sleep in the chapel, stole the show, along with various other items. But the clincher was the reconnection and healing of Avalee and Rowan.

Along with the drama, there was a ton of fun and some witty banter and deep spiritual lessons.

This was an outstanding Southern Comfort story from a talented author.

Sometimes what haunts you most is wondering what could have been.

Avalee Elvis prides herself with being able to fix just about anything. . . except her past. Unable to put the puzzle of her life together, she pours heart and soul into making neglected places whole again. As the owner of Lowcountry Lost, Avalee spends her days in hot-pink Carhartt overalls and a tool belt reclaiming Lowcountry properties. Making them beautiful again releases the deep sigh that soothes the hurt she holds.

Avalee’s latest project takes her to tiny Somewhere, South Carolina, a long-abandoned town. She ignores its ghostly folklore but can’t miss the shock of hearing the familiar Irish brogue that materializes on the job site—the voice of the man she never wanted to see again.

Rowan Murray is a structural engineer hired by investors to oversee the redevelopment of the quaint downtown Avalee is bringing back to life. Once upon a time, he was also the man who knew Avalee better than anyone else—or so he thought. Six years ago, neither of them was prepared for the tragedy they would face together or what would happen in its wake. But as they work together to complete the rehabbing of Somewhere, their broken pieces and the pain that nearly consumed them begin to lose its grip, and both begin to wonder if it’s not too late for a restoration of their own.

GONE TO THE DOGS Series #2, #4, #6 by Kathleen Y'Barbo, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

DOG DAYS OF SUMMER
"Nowhere in scripture did it say that heaven was a warm sunny day on a Texas ranch, I felt like that just might be the case."

Country music super-star Trina Potter had a mother (Peach . . . yep, that's her real name, I think!) and a niece down in Texas, while she made her music and her home up in Nashville, Tennessee. Maybe that needed to change . . . since her mother's decision-making skills were becoming a little suspect (like leaving mountainous piles of fabric for her dog-costume business . . . wait, was it a business or a hobby? . . . I digress . . . that she could trip over). And sweet Mari? Her niece? Well, she was trying desperately to open a rescue facility for dogs and was being thwarted around ever corner (like a bomb being left in the corner of the field where the dogs were . . . what's up with that?).

And then . . . there's the little matter of a certain nerdy high school prom-date . . . "He's grown taller and broader in the shoulders over the years and he (Wyatt Chastain) was more serious than I remembered, but he hadn't lost his sense of humor".

Suddenly there were more and more reasons to spend time in Brenham, Texas. If you think there's more to this story, then you would be correct. What an invigorating, cozy little mystery!

THE BARK OF ZORRO

"Lightning cracked. Thunder boomed. The poor pup yipped in fear. I had to do something."

Second Chance Ranch Dog Rescue volunteer Cassidy Carter was on her own this stormy Valentine's Day night. There was a pup that needed rescuing and it was up to her to make it happen. After a series of minor mishaps (like having to sort of, kind of, trespass to reach the frightened dog, then fleeing the scene while being chased by an unknown subject, and getting everything in the rescue van muddy and wet in the process) Cassidy got her dog! . . . only to discover that someone had painted the letter Z across his side.

"Since when did a man render me unable to successfully complete a sentence?"

James the Gorgeous Game Warden had done just that. She tried to ignore the fact that he had most assuredly pointed out that Cassidy's driver's license had expired, so she couldn't lawfully drive her vehicle until she took care of that little detail. Fast forward, Cassidy brings James into the "Zorro" conversation and they form a "team" mentality (or at least Cassidy does, James is insistent that she leave investigating to the professionals). Not!  . . . which makes the personal bond they are forming a little tricky to navigate.

This cozy Texas town mystery takes multiple twists and turns, but in the end culprits are apprehended and romance gets its much needed chance to bloom!

NEW LEASH ON LIFE
"Can we set aside some time to figure out how we can fix what needs to be fixed between us?"

After four years Nora Hernandez is losing hope that her beloved Dr. Lane Bishop is ever going to propose marriage. His heart is always in the right place but his lackadaisical approach to commitment is causing Nora to wonder if she just needs to let him go. Just when she's about to approach the subject, a Belgian Malinois becomes part of their equation. He's highly trained, much like one would expect from a military working dog, and when the small town of Brenham, Texas experiences a couple of suspicious explosions, the canine appears to have bomb-sniffing skills. "Pal", as he's named until they can find his true owner, is also capable of calming PTSD . . . which ironically is just what Lane needs . . . making Lane exactly who Nora needs.

My favorite book in the series! A really interesting small town mystery mixed with the sweetest of long awaited small town romances.

THE KILLER'S THERAPIST by Christy Barritt, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"He paused inside the house and sucked in a deep breath . . . the scents around him filled his nostrils . . . his favorite image filled his mind. Hadley Dawson."

Dr. Hadley Dawson firmly believes in the "power of transformation -for all . . . not just a select few". Her work as a career psychologist centered around those whose misdeeds had landed them in prison and her success stories were enough to warrant an upcoming book tour. Joining Hadley on those public appearances was a former patient Benjamin Lewis, a man who had spent years in jail for a crime he admitted to committing; now considered a stellar citizen . . . until . . . he becomes a murder suspect, yet again.

Hadley's very best friend was her best friend's husband . . . now before you raise your eyebrows too high, Hadley was divorced and Josiah was a widower. The two had formed a tight friendship centered around a mutual grief following Jules' death. Josiah was also a local detective, and after questioning Benjamin, his skepticism and Hadley's loyalty had the potential to cause . . . for the first time ever . . . a rift between them.

There's absolutely nothing ordinary about this story. Hadley's life is literally turned upside down over and over again as the body count mounts and no one person appears to connect all the dots. As she and Josiah begin to fight an unseen adversary alongside their unspoken feelings for each other, the killer or killers escalate their attempts to run Hadley's reputation and destroy anyone who gets too close.

A stellar combination of mystery and suspense with shades of psychological warfare battling the deepest intentions of the heart.

GRAVE PURSUITS by Elle E. Kay, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

(Pennsylvania Parks Book 1)

"Did the blood of the victims buried here cry out to God like the blood of Abel had?"

When park ranger Emily Davis stumbles in the woods while looking for a missing hiker, what she initially assumed was a rock, turned out to be something far more sinister; a human skull. Detective Wade Brunner shows up to investigate the grisly scene, causing Emily's heart to nearly stop for the second time in one day; he had captured her young heart all those years ago, only to toss it aside . . . now all grown up, and here in her space. Had he forgotten all about her? She thought . . . even assumed . . . that he had.

Emily Davis. How she could still take his breath away . . . except that her current demeanor didn't exactly exude excitement over seeing him again. In fact, she seemed very cozy with another ranger. Fine . . . they had a job to do, solving what was probably going to be a murder . . . except it turned into much, much more; both on professional and personal levels. Hickory Run State Park had buried its closely guarded secrets in graves that begged to be pursued and exposed . . . like yesterday.

Do Emily and Wade risk a second chance at love? How many women are going to die before a serial killer is brought to justice? Where to begin. How will it end?

A quick, meaningful and somewhat intense-at-times story that is attention grabbing without speeding past the human element, purposefully nourishing the reader with faith lessons along the trail to truth, for "trusting God with all your heart" is "easier to say than do."

INTO THE SUNSET by Mary Connealy, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

A Western Light Book #3: (A Historical Western Romance Set in 1800's Cheyenne, Wyoming)

For a good old fashioned western story, you cannot go wrong with Into The Sunset. The conclusion of this series sees a resolution to the problem of Ginny confronting her husband who had her unjustly committed to an insane asylum.

Lots of danger and excitement surround the group of friends as they seek to prove Ginny sane by traveling to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a trial. Dakota, a former wagon train master, is being stalked by a man out for revenge. Maeve tags along to help care for the children in the group. Dakota and Maeve have a shaky past, so all is not smooth in that respect either.

An appealing set of folks and interesting facts about the laws of the old west had me turning pages. The characters were flawed but honest in their actions and their faith was shown authentically. The themes of repentance, forgiveness and trusting God were prevalent. In the romance between Maeve and Dakota there is substantial growth and eventual maturity.

Ms. Connealy has another winner in this series set in the 1870s old west.

ALASKAN CYBER HUNTERS #3

Two years after the diabolical 26 Below attacks and the serial killer, everyone thought was dead, resurfaces and threatens Alaska once again.

Ms. Woodhouse has crafted a truly evil, unbalanced villain. The Cyber Solutions team certainly has their hands full. The author definitely puts them through their pieces. She brings light to a problem that haunts Dr. Tracie Hunter. A problem that she thought she had under control until she sees that she should relinquish that control to God.

With lots of cyber talk and up-to-the-minute technology which could go wrong this novel covers a lot of bases. We see manipulation by a contemptible bad guy, frustration by the team and despair in Tracie. But there is also a lesson in letting God lead, conquering unforgiveness, and getting priorities straight. Mac was a credible hero with his own flaws that he was learning to overcome. But both Mac and Tracie had a network of friends who were there for them.

This was another stunning story with real-world implications, and deep spiritual lessons. I could not stop turning pages.

BackCover Blurb:
The Cyber Solutions team has managed to stay one step ahead of the madman who has killed so many. From the original 26 Below cyberattack in Fairbanks to the 8 DOWN serial murders in Anchorage and beyond, they matched wits with the killer and stopped him from reaching his ultimate goals.

But final judgment is coming. And this time, there may be no defeating him.

David "Mac" McPherson has a personal stake in making sure this predator stays down for good. His family died in the cyberattack. Mac knows that God says "vengeance is mine"—but surely an exception can be made.

Surgeon Tracie Hunter is determined to stay sober and keep saving lives in Fairbanks, Alaska—even if it means being a little obsessive. After all, that same kind of determination is how she kept Mac alive after the murderer targeted him. And she won't let Mac run himself into the grave looking for payback; he's come to mean too much to her.

Then someone hacks into the system at Tracie's previous job as a medical examiner and frames her in a murder cover-up. There's no one else skilled enough to create a digital trail this incriminating—the killer is back in action, exploiting cybersecurity weaknesses to destroy lives. Can Mac stay focused and stop the next attack when his own vulnerability is exposed? Or will his need to make someone pay for his pain allow the maniac to pull ahead and win at last?

For Will, from disaster comes purpose and a deeper faith in God. “Sometimes the Lord takes us down paths we did not wish to go to get us where we need to be.”

Searching for his identity, he finds work on the Gallegher farm. Haunted by dreams and wondering what he left behind, Will feels at home with Luke and his family, especially his sister Lydia. When the possibility of finding out who he is arises, he is torn between what-ifs and the affection he has found with Lydia.

“I guess God doesn’t want anything or anyone to stand between us and Him.”

The story, even though it is written about difficult times, was uplifting as the characters sought God and His leading. “Do not let yesterday’s sorrows keep you from missing out on the blessings God intends for you today.”

The plot was interesting and the characters were relatable. It was a great historical tale told in an engaging way.

BEFORE WE WERE US by Denise Hunter, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"Oh, honey. She doesn't remember . . ."

The love of his life doesn't remember. Following a fall that could have very easily claimed her life instead of her memory, Lauren Wentworth barely acknowledges Jonah Landry . . . except as someone whom she struggles to get along with. Four months of their budding romance have been erased by amnesia, making Jonah fearful that the longer those memories evade Lauren's recall, the likelihood of a happily-ever-after for the two of them is rather . . . unlikely. The completion of Lauren's internship at his family's rustic lakeside resort in New Hampshire is just months away.

To make matters worse, Lauren has voiced the fact that she is not even that sure she wants to remember, viewing a relationship with Jonah as a roadblock to her rising career opportunities back in Boston.

As sweet as this story turns out to be, Lauren's stubborn denial of her love for Jonah was hard to comprehend, making her a bit unlikeable, especially at the beginning. On the other hand, Jonah's patient and tender kindnesses seemed not only authentic, but selfless, as he navigated loving her while trying not to jeopardize her recovery in any way.

"She can't remember. He can't forget." How does that work, exactly??? Enjoy finding out.
