JESSIE'S HIGH COUNTRY HEART by Patricia Snelling, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

Feeling restless and needing a break from her busy veterinarian practice, Jessie leaves the city of Waikato, New Zealand to visit her good friend Hope in a remote rural village called Glenorchy. She misses wide open spaces and mountain fresh air of the Southern Alps! When an opportunity arises to work as the on-call vet for remote area farms, she feels the Lord has opened the door for a new life. The possibility for a chance at love could seal it for her when Mack shows his interest in the pretty vet. Will she have the courage to walk through?
I really enjoyed visiting New Zealand through the pages of this book! Much of what Patricia Snelling described I could picture in my mind, it too made me yearn for wide open spaces. I could also relate to Jessie in a lot of ways. She’s trying to make a new path in life where so many things are uncertain and some of the older farmers make her new career difficult. I can understand the discouragement she would feel and wanting to give up. One thing I admired about Jessie, is how she took everything to God in prayer! Asking for His guidance in all her decisions and wisdom in how to deal with the opposition from the farmers. She also had some great friends to talk to and encourage her along the way. I was, however, a bit disappointed that the relationship between her and Mack didn't develop more fully. I would have loved to see more depth and build-up to the romance. In spite of that, I enjoyed getting to know Mack. He's the kind of man I would want for my own daughter. Kindness, caring and respect are just a few of the qualities I saw in him.

All in all, this was a good story to get lost in! The characters were interesting, the setting was beautiful, the faith theme felt natural, and the ending was perfect. I enjoyed reading this book and I plan to go back and read “When Hope Went South” to get to know her friend Hope better.

A RELUCTANT BRIDE by Jody Hedlund, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise and Winnie Thomas

A Reluctant Bride by Jody Hedlund is the first in the series Bride Ships. It is set in England and British Columbia in 1862.

Paula's Review:
Mercy Wilkins has a servant’s heart but she is caught in poverty.

Chapter 4: “Was death so common a visitor in these parts that people expected it, maybe even welcomed it as the only true savior from the pain? Or had they, like her, closed off their heart to the pain in order to continue on?”

She embarks on a ship to the British colonies in order to give her siblings a better chance to survive in their London slum. “She longed for the chance to finally stand on her own. This trip, this voyage, might be the only possibility she’d ever get to do that.” The only thing she wasn’t told is that she is expected to choose a husband when she arrives.

Joseph Colville is a nobleman but is fleeing his responsibility after the death of his family. He has become a doctor and is helping the destitute in the slums.

Joseph and Mercy meet on the Tynemouth where Joseph is the ship’s surgeon and Mercy sometimes assists him.
This was a very sad story for most of the book. Ms. Hedlund eloquently conveyed the utter squalor of Shoreditch slum of London and the poverty that beset the city in 1862. She vividly portrayed the deep privations of the sea voyage that took many months. Yet hope was in the story too. Mercy and Joseph learned a lot about God, themselves and each other. They showed their humbleness even in rough times. They also progressed in their faith and trusted in God to show them His leading.

A thought provoking, epic historical book, once again proving that Jody Hedlund is a phenomenal writer who is not afraid to tackle a hard subject.

Winnie's Review:
A Reluctant Bride is the first book in a new series, Bride Ships, by Jody Hedlund. With great attention to historical detail, Hedlund takes the reader on a journey from the poorest slums of London to hope for a better life in British Columbia. I enjoyed meeting the well-crafted and colorful characters and learning more about bride ships and the part they played in history. The settings in both London and British Columbia in the 1860s intrigued me and made vivid backdrops for the story. With just the right touches of suspense, romance, and inspiration, this book kept me riveted, while messages of hope, faith, courage, and the value of each individual added to my enjoyment of the story.

Hedlund’s distinctive historical detail, along with her memorable characters and brilliant story-telling make this a must-read for those who enjoy compelling historical fiction based on actual happenings. The author’s notes in the back of the book were an added bonus, and I was intrigued by some of the fascinating research she uncovered while writing the story. This book is headed right for my keeper shelf, and I’m anxiously awaiting the next in the series.

WOOING CADIE McCAFFREY by Bethany Turner, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

Wooing Cadie McCaffrey by Bethany Turner is a laugh out loud, quirky book.
Cadie McCaffrey works in New York for American Sports Network in the department that has more to do with number crunching than sports. Will is the new wonder boy after breaking a huge story in his job as a researcher. The book centers around what is happening after they have been dating for four years. Cadie keeps hoping Will will pop the question. An event threatens to end their relationship. This is the story of how they try to work back towards a happily ever after.

Bethany Turner came on the scene last year with The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck. Cadie McCaffrey has her signature wit and style. The author is not afraid to portray real and flawed characters, nor is she afraid to show how Christians sin and work though to repentance but she does it with comedy and flair.

For the romantic soul who loves Rom Coms, this book is just the ticket with all the pop culture and movie references. It will bring back memories of all our favorites. And the sports references make it all the more entertaining. What could be funnier than the two big jock supporting characters Ellis and Kevin as they go all out for Will and watch romantic movies!

For an extremely funny and nostalgic read— pick this book up today! I give this book 5 stars.

AN INTERVIEW with Author BETHANY TURNER by Nicole Cook, plus #review

Nicole: I am thrilled to have author Bethany Turner join us today at Inkwell Inspirations to discuss her newest romantic comedy novel, Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, which was chosen as the June book club selection for the Avid Readers of Christian Fiction Facebook Group. Bethany recently led a live Facebook chat in the Avid Readers Group to discuss her book with the members of the group.
Nicole
Bethany, thank you so much for joining us today!

Bethany
Bethany: Thank you, Nicole! I’m honored to be here. Inkwell Inspirations is such a great site!

Nicole: Wooing Cadie McCaffrey and your first novel, The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck, both contain many pop culture references, including many of the readers’ favorite romantic comedies. What are your favorite romantic comedies of all time, or is that like having to pick your favorite child??!! My favorite is You’ve Got Mail with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, although I love so many of the other romantic comedies mentioned in your books as well.

Bethany: You know, it IS a bit like picking a favorite child. Or, as my sister and I often say in our pop culture-obsessed way, “Don’t make me Sophie’s Choice that!” Having said that, You’ve Got Mail is my favorite as well, hands down. The late, great writer/director Nora Ephron is my biggest rom-com role model, and I’d probably have to put her “big three” romantic comedies at the top of the list—You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally. While You Were Sleeping is probably my next favorite. I’ll stop there. I could go on for days!

Nicole: Faith is an important theme in Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, and you realistically describe the struggles and temptations that Christians face when dating in the 21st century, while still trying to stay true to their religious beliefs. You definitely bring a needed voice to Christian fiction. What message or inspiration do you hope that people will get from reading Wooing Cadie McCaffrey?

Bethany: First of all, thank you for that. Here’s the thing: if we close our eyes and act like Christians aren’t dealing with these “worldly” issues as they attempt to swim upstream in a downstream world, we’re just fooling ourselves. Some Christian readers haven’t at all liked or approved of the way I address these realities in my books, and that’s okay. My writing may not be for them, but I’ve got to keep pushing forward as I believe God is leading me to. Because I believe we need to be having the conversations. The tough, uncomfortable conversations. The rest of the world doesn’t shy away from talking about these things, and I believe Christ’s church needs to actually lead the charge, and make sure we’re talking about it all in ways that point to the Lord. With Wooing Cadie McCaffrey in particular, I hope that readers walk away certain that there’s not a single thing they can do that will scare off, or even surprise, God. We’re so flawed, and 100% incapable of earning God’s mercy and forgiveness. I’m so grateful He doesn’t ask us to earn it—only to accept the gift He’s offering. And I also hope that Wooing Cadie McCaffrey shines a light on how important it is to communicate—with our loved ones, with the Lord, and even with ourselves.

Nicole: Where did you get your inspiration for your characters, and do you typically base their physical descriptions off of real-life people and/or celebrities?

Bethany: I typically have celebrities in mind pretty early in the writing process—either as a basis for their physical characteristics or for their personality. But I am such a pantser! I really don’t know anything about my characters before I start writing. I usually just let them introduce themselves to me on the page. That was very true with Cadie and Will in Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, but almost as soon as Will Whitaker started talking, I knew exactly who he was. I began seeing him as John Krasinski instantly—and not just John Krasinski, but specifically John Krasinski as Jim Halpert in The Office. And from then on, I wrote him that way. By the time Cadie described his appearance in the Prologue, I was describing John Krasinski! It doesn’t always happen that strongly for me, but it sure made it fun this time. And then, though I didn’t realize it at the time, I think I actually got a lot of inspiration for the workplace setting of the book from the old Aaron Sorkin TV show Sports Night. It wasn’t until I was completely done writing WooCaM that I realized just how much my love of Sports Night had impacted me!

Nicole: I love being a member of the Avid Readers of Christian Fiction Facebook group, organizing the book club, and participating in so many wonderful discussions within the group.

As a reader, I get to share my love of Christian fiction with the other members in the group, and I have discovered so many new-to-me authors who have become must-read authors.

From an author’s perspective, what do you like best about participating in the Avid Readers of Christian Fiction Facebook Group, and what has been your favorite part of having Wooing Cadie McCaffrey as the book club selection this month?

Bethany: You know, what I love most about being part of the group, as an author, is witnessing how passionate and devoted readers of Christian Fiction are. It’s such an honor when a reader lets my characters and words into their heart, and of course those characters and words are in my heart, too. So I like to think it creates a bit of a bond, and being able to interact directly with the readers is an immense privilege!

As for having Wooing Cadie McCaffrey as the book club selection for June, my favorite part was, without a doubt, the live book club discussion on Facebook Live. Getting to chat about books and Jesus and all these things that I’m so passionate about with such a fun and engaging group…what an amazing experience!

Nicole: I heard that you have a book tour coming up in July to promote Wooing Cadie McCaffrey. What can you tell the readers about your book tour, and do you plan to have additional locations added to your tour?

Bethany: I do, and I’m so excited! I live in a small town in Southwest Colorado, and while I love it, it sometimes feels a bit isolated. I grew up in Kentucky, so I’m delighted to be heading back to the Midwest for a couple of stops. I’ll be at the amazing Baker Book House in Grand Rapids, Michigan on July 11th—and trust me when I say visiting Baker Book House should be a bucket list item for anyone who loves to read Christian fiction or non-fiction. It’s immense, and they are always hosting such amazing events. And on July 16th I’ll be appearing at Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Crestview Hills, Kentucky—which is just down the road from where I grew up, and where my parents and sister still live. It’s a huge, wondrous store than sells every sort of book imaginable.

I am very open to additional locations being added! I may be making a stop in Toledo, Ohio, and there are few other possibilities still being ironed out. If anyone has any suggestions, let me know!

Nicole: I would love to visit Baker Book House someday! It looks absolutely amazing from pictures I’ve seen. I live about 30 min south of Columbus, Ohio in the middle of farm country, and Joseph-Beth Booksellers in Crestview Hills, Kentucky is about 1 ½ hrs. away from me. I am working on finding childcare for that evening, so I can hopefully make the trip to visit you at Joseph-Beth Booksellers. It would be so fun to meet you and get to chat in person!

Nicole: Without giving away any spoilers, can you share any information about your 2020 release, Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish? Will readers get to see more of their favorite pop culture references in this book? I am already looking forward to reading it!

Bethany: My editor is in the process of reading Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish for the first time, so I’ll be getting edits back soon…and then we’ll see what this book really becomes! It’s the story of two celebrity chefs who endure a painful scandal together, and are forced together in ways neither of them would have chosen as they both, in different ways, fight their way back from what happened. In many ways it will be similar to my style in The Secret Life of Sarah Hollenbeck and Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, but in other ways, it’s very different from anything else I’ve written. I’m really excited to introduce everyone to Hadley and Max!

Nicole: Bethany, thank you again for joining us today! I love your sense of humor, and this has been so fun chatting with you. I can’t wait until next summer to read Hadley Beckett’s Next Dish!

Bethany: Thank you so much, Nicole. It was a joy to chat with you, and I’m just so appreciative of all your encouragement and kind words, and all the work you put in to help spread Christian Fiction to the masses!

Nicole's Review:
Bethany Turner’s latest novel, Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, will have readers falling in love with the irresistible Will Whitaker as he tries to win back his girlfriend Cadie by using inspiration from many of her favorite romantic comedies. Bethany Turner takes readers on a fun, humorous journey of romance and second chances with numerous pop culture references sprinkled in throughout the novel. Fans of romantic comedies, such as You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, Dirty Dancing, Serendipity, and so many more, will love the references to their favorite movies. Readers will laugh out loud at the antics of Will and his athletic football friends as they watch the romantic comedies and try to help him win back Cadie.

In Wooing Cadie McCaffrey, Bethany Turner realistically describes the struggles and temptations that Christians face when dating in the 21st century, while still trying to stay true to their religious beliefs. Other Christian fiction novels often gloss over these issues or do not mention them at all, but Bethany Turner continues to bring a needed voice to Christian fiction. This book is very highly recommended for readers of Christian fiction who love romance and humor.

CROSS MY HEART by Robin Lee Hatcher, Reviewed by Nicole Cook

Cross My Heart, the second book in award-winning author Robin Lee Hatcher’s Legacy of Faith series, continues the storyline of an heirloom Bible being passed on throughout the generations of the Henning family. The recipients of Andrew Henning’s Bible are instructed to keep it until they feel that God tells them to pass it onto another family member. Robin Lee Hatcher creates an incredibly powerful dual timeline novel that deals with relevant issues in today’s society such as alcoholism, opioid addiction, and how these addictions can change people’s lives forever.
In the contemporary storyline, Ben Henning receives his great-great grandfather’s Bible from his cousin Jessica, whose story was told in the first book in the series (Who I Am With You). Ben decides to start an equine therapy program with the assistance of Ashley Showalter, who rescues abused and neglected horses. The verses in the Bible help strengthen Ben’s faith during this challenging time in his life as he attempts to make amends for past mistakes. The historical storyline follows Ben’s great-great grandfather Andrew Henning and his family through the years of World War II while two of his sons fight in the war.

Cross My Heart is a story of redemption, healing, and discovering God’s grace and purpose for our lives. Robin Lee Hatcher seamlessly switches between the contemporary and historical storylines, which allows readers to easily follow the journey of the Henning family through the years. Even though this is a slower-paced novel, readers will be thoroughly invested in the storyline and will be rooting for Ben and Ashley to get their happy ending. With relatable characters and real-life issues, readers will be captivated by this inspirational novel of forgiveness and hope.

Cross My Heart is highly recommended for readers of contemporary romance, especially those who enjoy books by authors such as Denise Hunter, Becky Wade, and Rachel Hauck.

Can two broken paths lead toward God’s redemption?

When Ashley Showalter and Ben Henning meet on Ashley’s horse rescue farm, they quickly discover how much they have in common. Both were raised by single moms. Both want to help where they see a need. And both work with horses in the Boise valley. Ben needs Ashley’s help and expertise after starting an equine therapy barn on his great-great-grandfather’s farm—and the more time they spend together, both Ashley and Ben have the feeling that there could be something more between them.

They also carry the burden of past experiences that may drive them apart if the truth is ever revealed. Ben is a recovering alcoholic with five years of sobriety behind him, while Ashley’s brother is an opioid addict residing in court-ordered rehab. Holding fast to the belief that addicts can never be cured, Ashley has promised herself she will never walk knowingly into the chaos created by addiction. Ben knows that with God, all things are possible—but will Ashley find it within herself to give love a chance? Or will her brother’s mistakes and the pain of her past jeopardize her future with Ben?

Cross My Heart threads together a contemporary love story with the heartwarming tale of Ben’s great-great-grandfather, Andrew Henning—reminding us that God’s Word is timeless and that His promises are new every morning.

FINDING EVER AFTER FairyTale Collection, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

Finding Ever After is a unique collection of four novellas by four great authors. The common thread is a beautifully illustrated book of fairytales with handwritten annotations.
Between Stairs and Stardust by Pepper Basham is a “charming” fairytale-like meeting of Stella and James at the Biltmore Mansion belonging to the Vanderbilts. Each chapter’s title is a charm from Stella’s bracelet depicting Cinderella.
Such a great story set in the Golden Age in a romantic setting in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Entanglements by Rachel McMillan .
This one had overtones of Rapunzel in Boston of 1920. There are fairy godmothers disguised as friends of Esther’s mother. They arrange for Esther to further her love of singing and hope to have her meet someone who loves the arts and chess as much as she does. Look for a very unique chess game!

Twice Upon a Time by Ashley Clark is a modern fairytale.
A pecan orchard is the setting and the hero has a sneaky way to win Emma’s heart A little fairytale book found at the Wistful Teacup Bookshop plays a part. Is it magic?

Twice Bitten by Betsy St. Amant is a modern tale with overt references to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs— who are seven geeky friends of Maggie Craft. The Prince shows up in handyman Griff Massey. This one had me laughing so many times as I caught the modern day portrayals of this most loved fairytale. Ms Amant has a lovely sense of humor and a great way with words. And are the stepsister and stepmother really mean or do they want the best for Maggie?

These four fairytale adaptations were so cute. It makes me want to find the magical book that ties them all together. This was a fantastic idea for a novella collection by some of my favorite authors.
Fun four times over!

MY DEAREST DIETRICH by Amanda Barrett, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney and Winnie Thomas

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Always remember. It is only space that separates us."

It takes an extraordinary writer to pen a story whose ending is eternity and whose beginning brings it back to life for all the world to see. Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who arguably possessed one of the most brilliant theological minds of the last century, fought bravely and loved deeply. Who knew? Through letters written back and forth to his young fiance, Maria von Wedemeyer, we glimpse Bonhoeffer's passionate faith, a faith that pervaded his very being and overflowed into his heart.

"What was faith if it was not living fully and completely in all of life - its joys and sorrows, burdens and blessings? . . . . . 'I have given you so little, but if my unending love is worth anything, then it is yours. Know that what ever comes, it is and always will be . . . yours.'"

Yes, this story is filled with times and places, events and circumstances; recounts of lives that were snuffed out prematurely at the whim of a diabolical regime, but mercifully it paints a picture of loveliness and light in the midst of darkness and inconceivable brutality, so that we may proclaim with boldness, "Auf Wiedersehen" our dearest Dietrich and Maria. "It is only space that separates us."

*I received a copy of this book from the author and publisher. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
Amanda Barratt’s beautifully penned love story based on the lives of Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Maria von Wedemeyer is truly a work of art. Her impeccable and detailed research, combined with her gift of story, add up to an exquisite and heart-wrenching tale which is a must-read for historical fiction lovers. Because this story is based on actual people, and because history had already determined the ending, there is an added poignancy to it.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a brilliant theologian who could not compromise his beliefs in the face of Hitler’s Nazism. He and many others conspired against Hitler and his atrocities knowing that the tiniest hint of conspiracy could bring the ultimate sacrifice. My heart broke for him and Maria and their families that were torn apart by the war and “man’s inhumanity to man.” The letters written between the two give a glimpse of their lives and feelings during this bleak time in history. The characters, both main and secondary, are vividly drawn and come to life on the page.

The cover/book jacket is beautiful and striking and drew me in immediately. I enjoyed the author’s notes at the end of the book, which included updates on the lives of some of the characters and gave additional information on the book.

My Dearest Dietrich has easily made the list of my favorite reads of the year and is bound for my keeper shelf. I would highly recommend it to those who enjoy historical fiction based on fact.

A staggering love illuminating the dark corners of a Nazi prison

Renowned German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer is famous for his resistance to the Nazi regime and for his allegiance to God over government. But what few realize is that the last years of his life also held a love story that rivals any romance novel.

Maria von Wedemeyer knows the realities of war. Her beloved father and brother have both been killed on the battlefield. The last thing this spirited young woman needs is to fall for a man under constant surveillance by the Gestapo. How can she give another piece of her heart to a man so likely to share the same final fate? Yet when Dietrich Bonhoeffer, an old family friend, comes to comfort the von Wedemeyers after their losses, she discovers that love isn't always logical.

Dietrich himself has determined to keep his distance from romantic attachments. There is too much work to be done for God, and his involvement in the conspiracy is far too important. But when he encounters a woman whose intelligence and conviction match his own, he's unprepared for how easy it is to give away his heart.

With their deep love comes risk--and neither Dietrich nor Maria is prepared for just how great that risk soon becomes.

Based on detailed historical research, this true love story is at once beautiful and heartrending. My Dearest Dietrich sheds new light on a world-famous theologian . . . and the woman who changed his life.

NOW AND THEN AND ALWAYS by Melissa Tagg, Reviewed by Rebecca and Kim

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
" . . when I was in my deepest pain, God came for me. He didn't leave me in an injured pile on the sidewalk nor did he stand around waiting for me to get up . . . . . He came running for me."

When Mara Bristol's journey to nowhere landed her on the steps of the Everwood Bed and Breakfast, she slowly and cautiously began to believe that her heart had found a place to call home. Now she's not so sure, the owner has disappeared and the repairs on the once fine estate are beginning to take their toll. Upon learning of the property's fragile financial standing, Mara begins to panic. . . . until one stormy night, an unlikely hero in the form of Marshall Hawkins, literally crashes through the inn's front door.

Detective Marshall Hawkins has been placed on a three month leave of absence from his job; his erratic behavior and mounting professional errors left his superior with no other choice. Still reeling from family tragedy, Marshall packs his bags and begins to drive; never expecting to find a place or a person who longs to become his "now and then and always".

Melissa Tagg's writing style is so enjoyable to read; full of subtle and not-so-subtle humor, strategic words of wisdom, magnetic attractions and in this case, an intriguing family mystery. But perhaps it's her strong themes of restoration that her readers value the most, for in this story it's God who finds a way to whisper, "there's life beyond the brokenness".

KIM'S REVIEW:
Another food warning! I usually do not eat sugary cereal and I do not like milk. That being said, you might want to have some sugary cereal and milk on hand when reading this story! I ate three bowls - not all at once though! ;-) I loved this story!!! It made me laugh out loud, it tugged at my heartstrings, and also me cry - more than once! I know when an author is able to draw those feelings out, it’s a good book. Melissa Tagg knows how to write engaging characters and they live in the best town ever! I want to move to Maple Valley!!

I loved Marshall Hawkins. Thirty-five. Milwaukee. (You’ll get it when you read the book!) He is such a great character who is going through some really really awful times. My heart literally ached for him and I wanted him to be okay. I also really liked Mara and I loved their first meeting and the hilarious conversation that followed! And there are parts throughout the story where Marshall plays a running joke on Mara that had me laughing out loud - every time! All of the secondary characters really added to the story and I want them all to have their own stories!

I also loved the religious aspects of this story! There are so many great quotes I want to share, but I’ll stick to just one, “But we always have a choice, don’t we? To let our hurts forever weaken us or...or instead find some way to draw strength from what we’ve been through.” This is so true! We can wallow in our misery or we can choose to let God use what we have been through to grow and strengthen us.

I highly recommend this story!

But when Lenora fails to return from a month-long trip and the bank threatens foreclosure, Mara worries she’s once again alone . . . abandoned . . . about to lose the only true home she’s ever known.

THE NUMBER OF LOVE by Roseanna M. White, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas and Rebecca Maney

Winnie's Review:
I’ve been wanting to read Margot De Wilde’s story since I met her in Roseanna White’s previous series. She is such an unusual heroine with a unique way of looking at, and coping with, the world. Her intelligence and wit shines in The Number of Love, and Drake Elton is the perfect counterpoint to her character. He sees something deep inside her and is willing to work to understand her world. White is a master at creating fascinating and colorful characters, and this story has plenty of them, including several cameo appearances of people from her Shadows Over England series. It was such fun to see them pop up here and there.

With a setting in London during World War I, this tale is replete with rich historical detail and fascinating information about the intelligence network during the war. The author’s research shines through and adds such deep interest to the story, while the inspirational themes of faith, hope, courage, and the power of love lend depth and satisfaction. I would recommend this book to those who love well-written historical romantic fiction with large doses of suspense and intrigue thrown in.

*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

Rebecca's Review:
"The numbers marched across the page in a glory all their own."

Margot De Wilde stays quite busy using her prodigious mathematical prowess to aid England's intelligence network at its highest level; in short, Margot is a codebreaker. She would rather calculate the number of bricks used to construct a building, than bat her eyes in flirtation; thus keeping her male counterparts in Room 40 at a comfortable distance. That is until one day, when Lieutenant Drake Elton barged into her private conversation of numbers and popped just the right question, "Have you a name?"

Drake Elton cannot forget the girl without a name, whose dark eyes pervade his memory through-out the hours of his dangerous days and nights. When his own service as an intelligence agent is interrupted by a life threatening injury, Drake returns home to England to recuperate and discovers the enigmatic Margot De Wilde once again; this time at the side of his hospital bed, in the shadow of his beloved sister. Unfortunately, all is not fair in love and war as pundits would have us to believe, for there are some puzzles that seem impossible to solve, or perhaps it's just a matter of asking the right question.

"Three, nine, twenty-seven, eighty-one . . . Eighteen. Eighteen. Eighteen." The number of love.

Outstanding hardly seems adequate to describe the manner in which Roseanna White has brought these characters to life!

THE NUMBER OF LOVE by Roseanna White, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise and Karen Klepsteen with #GIVEAWAY

Paula's Review:
The Number of Love is first in the new series The Codebreakers, but we get to reconnect with some characters from previous books! The most notable one is Margo De Wilde, who we first met as a child prodigy in A Song Unsung. Margo may be only 17, but some find her intimidating because of her expertise with numbers, namely in codebreaking for the government. She is intriguing to Drake Elton. Drake is used to being a patient man in his capacity for the war effort. He uses that patience in his relationship with Margo.

I admit that I don’t like Math. But Roseanna White has made me a fan of the orderliness of numbers, codes and encryption. She even makes numbers romantic! I became so immersed in this story that I worried along with Dot, looked over Margo’s shoulder while she was at work and was right there on that train with Drake.

This book was extremely well researched. I have come to appreciate that in a Roseanna White novel. The story she weaves around the facts is fascinating and so well thought through. It was fun to learn about Room 40 and decryption and that Anthrax and Wolfram were around long before I thought they were. Take note of the cover and look for references in the text. It is spot on!

The spiritual thread gives the reader much to mull over. When we think God is silent, is He still in control or are we just not listening? A quote from the book: “Sometimes God’s will was to let man taste the consequences of his folly, his hatred and his supposed self sufficiency. Sometimes God lets people die. Lets His children break. And then pieces them back together into something new. Something that He could use for His Glory instead of theirs.”

I enjoyed the family dynamics. They were different for each family but they also showed that in times of adversity families pull together and affirm their faith in God.
Recommended for fans of Historical Christian Fiction with a suspense thread.

I am sure the next books in this series will be as exciting as this one. They just keep getting better!

Karen's Review:
I’m completely enamored with The Number of Love since I’m a big fan of math! It was my favorite subject in school. I can totally relate to Margot’s love of concrete formulas and answers. Drake is witty, perceptive, and patient. The idea of two people who are so drastically different, maybe more so than the average couple, makes for such a compelling story! I love the way that Margot and Drake learned to communicate! There’s one scene that was so romantic and I won’t spoil the surprise, but as others have mentioned, there’s one particular number that carries a lot of meaning for Margot and Drake. It’s literally their love language. I’m a little bummed that there’s no epilogue in this book, but if the next story picks up where this one left off then I’ll be happy!

BENEATH THE SURFACE by Lynn Blackburn, Reviewed by Kim

Thank you Ashley for recommending Beneath the Surface by Lynn Blackburn! Warning! ⚠️ Have cookies on hand! I know that sounds weird for a suspense book with gruesome murders in it, but trust me on this!
This story is exactly what I look for when I read a romantic suspense novel! I really loved everything about it! The romance and suspense were both nicely paced and there were several edge of your seat moments - that last one was a doozy! I think I accused just about everyone before the killer was revealed! The banter between Ryan and Gabe - actually all of the team members- is great! I loved when the whole group got together to try and solve the case(s). I also really liked both Leigh and Ryan as a couple. There was no big misunderstanding or needless arguing, which was refreshing for a change.

At one point in the story, Ryan and Leigh are talking about why bad things happen in life and the verse that says when sin entered the world, so did death. Ryan makes this conclusion, “I guess I’ve always seen it as physical and spiritual death, and of course it is, but all those other deaths are also the result of sin.” That’s so true, and honestly, I’ve never really thought of it like that when reading this verse, but sin does result in the death of so much.

I am really looking forward to book 2, Into the Deep, and I can’t wait for Gabe’s story, One Final Breath, which comes out in September!

Author Toni Shiloh creates an extremely satisfying ending to her beloved Maple Run series in her latest release, Risking Love. Risking Love can easily be read as a stand-alone novel. However, many of the secondary characters in Risking Love are featured in earlier books in the series, so readers who enjoy this novel will definitely want to read the entire Maple Run series.
In Risking Love, Nikki Gordon, a hostess at The Maple Pit, is attempting to overcome the painful memories of a horrible crime committed against her six years ago by her brother’s best friend. Handsome Shorty Smalls has wanted a relationship with Nikki for years, but due to her past, she has been content to remain as friends. Toni Shiloh brings a needed diversity to Christian fiction, and her writing style will appeal to readers of contemporary romance everywhere. Her writing is rich with Scripture and spiritual content, while also giving readers a swoon-worthy romance with wonderful characters who demonstrate good Christian values. Readers will want to visit the fictional town of Maple Run and hang out with Nikki, Shorty, and the rest of their friends.

God’s grace and love is constant, and He is always there to comfort us, even during the most difficult times in our lives. Risking Love is a story of healing, the power of friendship, and finding true love.

Risking Love is highly recommended for readers of contemporary romance, especially those who enjoy books by authors such as Denise Hunter, Becky Wade, and Melissa Tagg.
“Just know that I am here for you, whenever you need me. Know that I will wait for you however long it may take. Know that I won’t feel like a second has been wasted, but that God has fashioned us for His perfect timing.”

“Thank You Lord, for showing me that love is a risk worth taking.”
