THE FRENCH KITCHEN by Kristy Cambron, reviewed by Rebecca and Paula

A Historical Romance Set in WWII France,
Post-War Paris, and the World of Julia Child

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"The next sound Kat heard was death - the click of a Luger trigger aimed at the back of her head."

So many pieces of the puzzle ended up scattered about the snowy grounds of France's Chateau du Broutel on that fateful night. Friends took on the appearance of enemies and enemies acted suspiciously like friends. Years later Kat Harris still struggled to come to grips with all of the implications. Her overriding determination was to discover what had really happened to a beloved brother; in fact, Kat had rearranged her entire life to do just that, including entrusting her future to the one whom she still wasn't sure she could trust.

Manon Altier was in a precarious position, serving as a French chef inside the famed Chateau du Broutel, now billeted by the enemy, while she secretly aids the French Resistance. When an unexpected arrival claims to be her new personal assistant, and yet knows nothing about the inner workings of a professional kitchen, Manon pivots, trusting that much needed help has indeed landed on her doorstep.

Heavily layered from beginning to end, this story speaks volumes about the courage and tenacity of those whose lives remained at risk from the rising of the sun until the darkening of the moon. With remarkable subtlety, the author does what the reader finds impossible to do, tell the story to completion.

Cascading emotions! Outstanding characters! Fascinating historical detail! A reminder that love can bloom in a wasteland and that food can forge everlasting friendships. Embrace a book that is sure to land on multiple top reads lists, including mine.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“To look back is not to lament all we have lost, but to see how past experiences have shaped us into who we are. “

Another remarkable, well-researched story about the multiple groups working together in France during WWII and the far reaching consequences in the years following. Told in the years 1943 and 1952, Kat, Gerard, Gavin and Manon, lived a secretive, covert existence in a dangerous time under the noses of the German occupiers in France. The interesting thing was the addition of Julia Child into the story that drew on her actual role during WWII and the time that she was compiling her famous cookbook.

It was a fascinating, complicated plot that kept me turning pages. I was eager to learn more of this time in history and how the Resistance operated. “War was not for lovers, nor courage for fools.”

If you are looking for a fresh look at WWII history, try this book. You will not be disappointed.

THE RECLUSE'S VINDICATION by Danielle Grandinetti, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

Rumors, Monsters, and Second Chances
at Our House on Heather Wynd

PAULA'S REVIEW:
What an intriguing mix of the Loch Ness Monster, rescuing children from Germany, and finding a lost love.

The story starts out in the mountains of Montana where Eleanor is fleeing from a life altering incident and proceeds to Scotland where Ben is working to free unfortunate refugees from eminent danger prior to WWII. Ben is the recluse who escaped 16 years prior when his life was in danger. He has never forgotten Eleanor but left to protect her. Eleanor has never forgotten Ben either.

Second chances, not only at love but at a renewed faith, are central to the story. A charming seven year old orphan named Amalie will steal your heart when she wants Eleanor and Ben to be her parents. And what a clever way to fit the Loch Ness Monster into the story. You will have to read it to find out the unique way Ben is vindicated.

This is part of a multi-authored series but is easily read as a stand alone. In addition, Ben is a grandson of a couple in a previous book by the author.

THE WOMEN OF OAKRIDGE by Michelle Shocklee, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“Not every secret needs to be told. Some just need to be forgotten.”

Absolutely fascinating story about a real place in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and the city that employed thousands during World War II. Cloaked in secrecy, the workers were unaware just what they were working on. But the result stopped WWII and changed the world.

Mae Willet was one of those workers and in 1979, long after the war ended, she still holds secrets that haunt her. She wears herself out helping others to assuage her guilt. Her niece, Laurel, is working on her dissertation and wants to interview former workers of Oak Ridge. What she uncovers hits close to home and may risk a loved one’s future.

This was so very interesting with a well crafted plot, giving us a peek into a hidden government project. The characters were authentic and their struggles with ethics and faith were depicted realistically. There is a sweet romantic aspect but the real focus is on what it means to be loyal, trustworthy, patriotic and sometimes finding a conundrum in the midst. Taking responsibility and finding forgiveness was shown as the characters progressed in their faith. Recommended for fans of home-front WWII fiction.

The King's Men Series #3

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Your father named you not for the gold that men pull from the ground . . . but for that golden star shining like a beacon - like a blessing from on high . . . "

There were many days that Zahava didn't feel like a blessing from on high. In spite of her secretive skills as a master goldsmith, her physical limitations made her doubt that any man would support her as a husband. Until one night, under the stars, a chance encounter with an inebriated soldier changed the course of her future.

Gavriel, once part of an elite company of soldiers traveling with the king's son, had been demoted to a lower position because of his reckless behavior. If the truth were known, he deserved it, but there was nothing deserving about the beautiful woman who became entangled into his life. Divine providence was on full display in a way that neither Zahava nor Gavriel could have ever imagined.

Many historical novels have a subtle layering of romance, but this seemed to be an over arching love story, and a very cativating one at that; God's love for His people, His people's love for their land, a father's love for his daughter, a son's struggle to love his father, a man's love for his wife. The path that Zahava and Gavriel travel is not one they would have necessarily chosen, for it meant experiencing both tragedy and grief, but ultimately it was one that made them stronger in their faith and confident in their calling.

Pure gold!

Gavriel, a soldier in the elite company of Yonatan--son of King Saul--dreams of forging his destiny through crafting weapons with his own hands. Despite earning his place among Israel's finest, he is haunted by a dark past that no distraction can dispel. When his reckless behavior crosses a line, Yonatan gives him one last mission to prove his worth: help persuade a distant Kenite tribe to sever their ties with the Amalekites.

Zahava, a gifted goldsmith hidden behind her father's legacy, lives in the shadows due to her physical affliction. Her unmatched and unrecognized talent is a closely guarded secret within her family. Disheartened by a future that seems unattainable, she resigns herself to a life of obscurity. However, when Gavriel arrives in her village, they're tangled together in ways neither could have imagined. As they navigate unforeseen dangers and enemy threats, Gavriel must confront his past and either bend his knee to the One True King or lose the woman he loves forever.

Set against the backdrop of ancient Israel, this exhilarating Old Testament-era tale is threaded with themes of redemption, courage, and sacrifice. This Iron Age story will appeal to readers of biblical fiction, Francine Rivers, Tessa Afshar, and Angela Hunt.

A WORTHY RISK by T. E. Renich, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

SOVEREIGN LIBERTY SERIES #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"What will become of us?"

The lives of two families intersect after their sons return home from British North America following the prolonged conflict with the French and their native allies. Although Lieutenant Marcus St. James bears an external scar, the most troublesome imprints are internal. Traveling to spend time with a favored cohort, he meets Gideon Ravensworth's sister, Serenity, whose outward beauty and vivacious spirit whisper peace to a place buried deep inside his worrisome spirit. However, all is not well within the inner sanctum of the Ravensworth household as the eldest brother has gambled away a fortune, placing Serenity's honor on the line as collateral.

As Serenity's love for a most beloved younger brother and Marcus' dedication to his military commission take the two in different directions across the Atlantic, their patience and trust in each other will be severely tested as they depend upon God to direct their paths.

Overflowing with history between two continents, this story expertly displays the tightened tension between England and her colonies without overburdening the story, rather using the time period as a backdrop for an intriguing romance between two characters worthy of the risk.

BackCover Blurb:
One for the land and one for the war—
One for the church, and pray for no more... –Anonymous

Serenity Ravensworth is the lone sister among four brothers who seem to match descriptive lines of an ancient, anonymous poem. The youngest has no inheritance according to English law. The next brother in line studies to be ordained at Oxford. The soldier has been in British North America fighting the French and their native allies. And the eldest usurps control of Fernsby Hall. Reckless gambling endangers all the Ravensworth brothers and puts Serenity squarely in harm’s way.

Without the aid of Serenity’s soldier-brother, former grenadier Marcus St. James would not have made it back to England. Wounded and left for dead in the wake of the massacre at Fort Michilimackinac, Lieutenant St. James is found alive eight weeks after and five hundred miles distant from his last known whereabouts. His disturbing lack of memories gnaws at his sound mind and his sense of loss is compounded by unanswered questions.

An introduction to Miss Ravensworth inspires St. James to collect shattered pieces of the life left to him. Predicated by stronger feelings than he is able to articulate, his timely rescue of her deepens the growing attachment between them. Compelled to follow the pull of unexpected opportunities in a new land, Miss Ravensworth braves the Atlantic crossing, while St. James—at Benjamin Franklin’s behest—returns to the Pennsylvania colony as a member of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon’s survey team.

Far from the familiarity of England, will these two find purpose together or challenge apart as Parliament dictates stricter regulations and imposes taxation on British citizens dwelling in the North American colonies? The Seven Years’ War is over, but King George III’s Royal Proclamation is the first domino to fall on the way to igniting a revolution.

PROS AND CONS MYSTERIES #5

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

"She knew all about secrets. They were what she did best."

Olive Sterling felt as if she had already lived a lifetime full of secrets. Now it seemed that the mountains of West Virginia were holding fast to some of their own. The daughter of a tech billionaire had gone missing while organizing and promoting an elite wilderness concert experience, prompting the girl's father to hire private investigators. Posing as a married couple, Olive and her colleague (and once the love of her life) Jason Stewart were slated to attend the inaugural Grayfall Music Festival which turned out to be nothing like they expected and everything they would have dreaded, if they had only known. Something very nefarious was happening on that mountain.

"The trees are watching."

This plot was wound so tightly that every sight and sound seemed like a tipping point. I may have even caught myself holding my own breath a time or two. Definitely my favorite episode in this series!

Posing as married festival-goers, Olive and her colleague Jason Stewart trek deep into the mountains to attend the inaugural Grayfall Music Festival. What they find is a rustic disaster masquerading as a luxury experience. Promised headliners don’t show. Gourmet meals turn out to be cheap hot dogs. And the glamping accommodations are threadbare tents in a dilapidated ghost town.

As complaints mount and guests demand refunds, Olive realizes they’re not just dealing with fraud—they’re trapped in something far more dangerous. When other attendees start to disappear, Olive struggles to uncover what’s really going on before she becomes the next person to vanish.

A WRITING UPON THE SAND by J. M. Kirkley, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“May your character be not a writing upon the sand, but an inscription upon the rock.”

Based on the real, disastrous hurricane of 1900 in Galveston, Texas, the author brings the events to life in the story of twenty year old Emily Cleburn. Emily has agreed to become a governess for her cousins to enable her aunt to care for her ailing uncle.

Ms. Kirkley did an admirable job chronicling the devastation that befell the people of Galveston during the worst hurricane in U. S. history. Amidst the tragedy, the author spins a tale of a young girl helping family but also being pursued by two men: the local clergyman, Colin Hensleigh and Nathan Chambers, a neighbor. Nathan is a newspaperman who seeks to expose corruption in town having to do with Chinese immigrants.

Lots of complexities to this story with the addition of emotional upheaval that follows a tragic event. The book follows the spiritual struggles that Emily grappled with along her faith journey. When Emily questioned why God was silent, she was pointed to where God has already revealed himself: Holy Scripture. “Maybe God wanted her to desire knowing Him more than having answers.”

An exceptional story that gave spiritual insight with a backdrop of a historically significant event.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I love the Haverly universe as penned by Erica Vetsch. Bertie and Phillipa make an engaging couple as they are paired by Marcus for a new adventure in spying which could be a little matchmaking too!

Phillipa has a tender heart for the misused women trying to leave a life of sin. Since establishing Eleos, the refuge that equips ladies and finds them respectable vocations, Phillipa is busy fundraising and furnishing the estate. “The past is the past, and that is where it belongs. You are not defined by what you once were, but who you are now in Christ.”

Sir Bertrand Thorndike is the perfect gentleman and gains a seat in the House of Commons in order to ferret out corruption. He falls right into a seedy situation that someone powerful is behind the scenes pulling the strings.

Lots of intrigue, a little romance, and some mischievous animals round out a perfect story. The political attitudes of the era were surprisingly similar to what we see today. Showing that some things stay the same.

A favorite character was the new vicar of Eleos. Mr. Hewitt was a humble man who showed repentance and gave back to others by not only preaching a good sermon but worked hard to help renovate the grounds and buildings. He treated all with respect and gave grace.

If you love Regency tales, this book is not to be missed.

A Heartfelt Contemporary Romance (Far & Away Book 1)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I love this author when she writes historical books and am captivated by her contemporary offerings.

This was an enemies-to-love trope with a love triangle and scandal thrown in for good measure.

The part I liked most was the historical angle about The Roost, a 300 year old building and the mystery surrounding its original owners from the 1600s.

The story was so much more than a romance. It was about complex family relationships which begged for healing and forgiveness. The setting was a favorite place of mine: Williamsburg, Virginia and told a bit about William and Mary College. The information about building a golf course and Jack, his health issues and background was very interesting.

If you enjoy Ms Camden’s historical stories, try one of her contemporaries. You will not be disappointed.

A Regency-Infused Contemporary Rom-Com with the Brother's Best Friend Trope

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This book is comedic genius, pairing contemporary rom-com with everything Austen and Regency.

Zoe and her friend Eden have a podcast based on their love for a fictional author: A. Nathaniel Gladwin. To be certain I had not missed another Regency author, I quickly looked up Gladwin. The author was that convincing!

Zoe is Miss Control as evidenced in her planning and many lists including her 30 by 30 list of things to accomplish in finding a spouse according to the standards of the Regency period. Let the fun begin when Eden’s brother Harrison helps the girls with filming. Zoe has had a crush on Harrison since she and Eden roped him into watching all things Austen when they were mere girls. Harrison is the voice of reason: “Surrender is acknowledging the fact that God has it under control, has our backs and loves us. We don’t have to carry the burden of making everything right.”

I loved the banter and a hero who could quote Austen and was brave enough to don a cravat and dance the period dances at a ball. Delightful mishaps abound at the Singles Regency Retreat that brought back scenes from Austen adaptations. This was an Austen lover’s dream of a story right down to the wet-shirt-Darcy want to be! Loads of fun with a plot that mimicked a Jane Austen novel.

She thought she knew the rules of love. Turns out, love makes its own.

The perfect match can't be far--certainly not at a Regency-themed singles' retreat--or so podcaster Zoe Dufour believes. After years of creating content for her relationship podcast inspired by Regency etiquette and era-appropriate rules for romance, she knows her listeners have anticipated this retreat. But she also attends with expectations of her own: finding the ideal modern-day gentleman who can meet every one of the nonnegotiables on her checklist.

Harrison Lundquist, Zoe's podcast producer and best friend's brother, reluctantly agrees to tag along on the retreat to capture footage while seeking a career-advancing promotion. He views the retreat as ridiculous. And Zoe's methods for finding her real-life Mr. Darcy? Downright absurd! But as he films her whirlwind dates, his growing feelings for her are sidelined by suitors vying for her attention. When Zoe realizes her checklist for the man of her dreams might be holding her back, she must decide if she's willing to rewrite her rules and take a chance on the person who has been there all along.

A SEA VIEW CHRISTMAS by Julie Klassen, Reviewed by Trixi, Paula, and Rebecca! #ReleaseDay

A Holiday Regency Historical Novella with Sisters and Second Chance Romance
 On Devonshire Shores Series

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
With her lyrical writer’s voice, Julie Klassen brings the Devonshire Shores series to a wonderful conclusion. Though I wished it didn’t have to end! It’s one of those engaging series that has been so enjoyable to get to know the Summer sisters and feel like I was part of their lives, both in the ups and downs and all the in-betweens. I very highly recommend reading these books in order to get a more complete view of the characters, their situations, lives and loves and a deeper understanding of the whole story line.

This is elder sister Sarah’s story and I have been anticipating it since the very first book ‘The Sisters of Sea View’. I love her devotion to family and her commitment to seeing to their livelihood after the death of their father. She’s sacrificed her own happiness and wellbeing—while this is admirable—it has cost her a great deal and the possibility of a lifetime love of her own.

When a trip to Scotland takes place to be in attendance with her sister and new brother-in-law after their marriage, it puts her in close proximity to one Callum Henshall. He's the widower who first stayed at Sea View and the man she grew to admire a great deal. Could it be a second chance for both of them to get reacquainted and renew not only a deep friendship, but possibly the love of a lifetime? If only Sarah didn’t feel so duty bound to her sisters and mother and if Callum can convince her to take a chance on him. I was on pins and needles the whole book, hoping Sarah would choose love over all else! I won’t spoil the ending, but will only say it was well worth the anticipation. There is also a side story involving the youngest sister Georgiana and her discovery of a blossoming first love of her own that just added another charming layer to this.

Julie Klassen knows how to draw the reader into her characters’ lives; she’s one of my top favorite historical authors. Her stories are always heartwarming, delightful, full of faith, family love and those oh so happily-ever-afters that I love to read about. My favorite part of this was reading about all the Christmas traditions in Regency times... even wishing I lived in that era for all the wonderful preparations, games, dances and celebrations.

As I said earlier, I didn’t want this series to end! I can’t wait to see what novel is next in line from Klassen.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
What a lovely time it was to return to Sea View to Sarah and Callum’s story. The setting was magical at Christmastime with all the holiday festivities. I enjoyed learning about the customs of Christmas in 1820.

I am so glad Sarah and Callum got their second chance. Although it took some time because Sarah was feeling so responsible to her family. Her mother wisely tells her that everything is in God’s hands, that there are a lot of “what ifs” that might not happen.

A favorite character was youngest daughter Georgiana who is growing out of her tomboy ways into a young lady and just might be taking an interest in a certain well dressed young man. I would love to see a book containing her story.

It was good to see the family closeness and their hearts for helping the less fortunate in the town.

This was a wonderful story by a gifted author in a favorite era.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

" . . . let me make something clear. I know how I feel about ye, lass. "

As the Christmas season approaches, Sarah Summers tries not to lament over how her life might have turned out differently, accepting the responsibilities of keeping her family's boarding house running smoothly and efficiently had consumed her life for months on end, while watching three most beloved sisters fall in love with their soul mates.

A reunion between Sarah and their previous Scottish guest Callum Henshall seems but a whispered dream buried deep within her tender heart.

This highly anticipated conclusion to the series in no way disappoints, for not only does Sarah gain an opportunity for a holiday happily-ever-after, but the Regency era festivities are so beautifully described that readers will dream about traveling back in time just to experience the delicious food, revered traditions and creative games for themselves.

The holiday stirs up excitement as fondly remembered guests come to stay and acquaintances grow into more. . . .

With a promise to her youngest sister, Sarah Summers declares that this year's Christmas at Sea View will exceed all expectations. But an upcoming trip to Scotland--and the prospect of becoming reacquainted with dashing widower Callum Henshall--blows a flurry of doubts into her mind. Sarah had discouraged his attentions before yet soon finds herself once again torn between attraction and duty as alluring thoughts of a second chance at love weave their way into her practical heart.

Meanwhile, seventeen-year-old Georgiana eagerly anticipates the exciting Christmas of her dreams after last year's dull, disappointing holiday filled with endless chores. She enjoys all the promised parties, music, and dancing, but is taken by surprise when young love comes knocking. Does the festive romance of a
Sea View Christmas hold the key to a happily-ever-after for both sisters?

Spend the holiday season with the Summers sisters on the charming Devonshire coast, where family bonds are strengthened, love is rekindled, and Christmas joy abounds.

ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Melody Carlson, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt #ReleaseDay

A Christmas Novella

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
I always look forward to reading a Christmas novella by Melody Carlson! There’s nothing like sitting down for a few hours and immersing myself in what feels like a sweet Hallmark movie in book form.

Carol’s plans are derailed when her flight to the Bahamas to dodge the dreaded Christmas season is cancelled due to bad weather. But what appears to be a huge inconvenience, turns out to be the best thing that happened to her. Stranded in a Michigan airport overnight, she makes an impulsive decision to connect with an aunt she never got to know growing up. What she discovers is a family she grows to care for, a town she falls in love with, and perhaps love of the heart kind too! God redirected her to the best gift of “home” and a heart change for the true meaning of Christmas.

I think my favorite character was Carol’s aunt Maria. She’s full of wisdom, unconditional love and a little bit of stubbornness—I couldn’t help but like her from the get-go! I’m so glad she got to connect with her only niece and form strong family ties with her. What a wonderful relationship it was to watch unfold!

I love this story of faith and family all wrapped up in a sweet package to enjoy over and over again. And of course, a hint of a happily-ever-after at the end.

Can a tropical escape from holiday blues turn her Christmas into a snowy wonderland filled with joy and cheer?

Carol Langstrom hates Christmas. Growing up in a dysfunctional home, with a birthday on December 25 and too many dashed childhood expectations, the holiday season is something she would rather avoid. And working in the design industry where she manages seasonal decor for wealthy, entitled clients certainly hasn't helped!

So, this year her goal is to flee to the Bahamas--by herself--bah humbug! But bad weather and God's radically different plan redirect her flight to blustery Michigan, where she gets stuck on her aunt's farm and discovers a different kind of Christmas--one wrapped in love, family, and holiday spirit.

Melody Carlson's Christmas novella delivers all the charm of a holiday Hallmark movie, is rooted in Christian faith, woven with sweet romance, and features A Christmas Carol themes.

THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE by Beverly Lewis, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

A Christian Fiction Amish Christmas Novella

in Lancaster County with Holiday Romance, in the Small Town of Hickory Hollow

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
Good things take time to grow. – Ella Mae Zook

With her wonderful storytelling abilities, Beverly Lewis entertains you with this heartwarming tale of family, faith, and loving your neighbors no matter who they are. It’s been many years since I’ve read a book by Lewis and I’m asking myself why. I always find myself feeling like I’ve come home with one of her novels. She first introduced me to this thing called Christian fiction with her Daughters of Abram series and I have since then discovered so many other CF authors!

I love the unfolding of the warm and gentle romance between Liz and Matthew. Could this be the man God has for her? Maybe even her dad has done a little matchmaking knowing Liz’s desire for a husband and eventual children. Liz and Matthew were wonderful characters; I was rooting for them the whole time! I really enjoyed watching the close-knit family ties between Liz’s mom, sister and her church community. Their strong Amish faith is something I always love reading about.

This story takes place just before Christmas, so experiencing all the preparation and traditions from an Amish point of view was a lot of fun. There is also mention of an English family who moved into their neighborhood and I like Liz’s heart to try to reach them in spite of a lot of opposition from her Amish community. What she does at the end was very heartwarming! The Christmas House has it all for me; faith, family, a touch of romance, tight-knit community and being the hands and feet of Christ to those who are outsiders. And through Beverly Lewis’s pen, she brought it to life for me!

Beverly Lewis, the number-one bestselling author of Amish fiction, delivers a delightful Christmas novella of faith, romance, and heartwarming holiday traditions.

With the holidays approaching, Liz Lantz is dedicated to using her Hickory Hollow buggy tour business to share God's love with the Englisher tourists who visit her Lancaster County community. But when her father and brother are called away for a while, Dat finds a young Amishman to assist her on the tours in her brother's place, much to Liz's dismay. Regardless, the popularity of her Christmas House Buggy Tour means she could use the help, so as the countdown to Christmas begins, she works alongside Matthew Yoder, who quickly takes a genuine interest in the tour customers--and Liz.

As an Englisher family in Hickory Hollow expresses their festive spirit with a lavishly decorated house for the second year running, Liz's Amish community becomes increasingly concerned about attracting unwanted traffic and attention, and Liz wonders if there is any way to bridge the gap to help the new neighbors feel welcome. At the same time, she grapples with her growing feelings for Matt, whose position with her is only temporary. Can she find a way to bring harmony to Hickory Hollow in time for Christmas?

Beverly Lewis's homespun Amish romance will draw in readers who love family, small towns, and Christmas festivities. This charming holiday novella brings cheer and faith for the winter season.
