A WRITING UPON THE SAND by J. M. Kirkley, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“May your character be not a writing upon the sand, but an inscription upon the rock.”

Based on the real, disastrous hurricane of 1900 in Galveston, Texas, the author brings the events to life in the story of twenty year old Emily Cleburn. Emily has agreed to become a governess for her cousins to enable her aunt to care for her ailing uncle.

Ms. Kirkley did an admirable job chronicling the devastation that befell the people of Galveston during the worst hurricane in U. S. history. Amidst the tragedy, the author spins a tale of a young girl helping family but also being pursued by two men: the local clergyman, Colin Hensleigh and Nathan Chambers, a neighbor. Nathan is a newspaperman who seeks to expose corruption in town having to do with Chinese immigrants.

Lots of complexities to this story with the addition of emotional upheaval that follows a tragic event. The book follows the spiritual struggles that Emily grappled with along her faith journey. When Emily questioned why God was silent, she was pointed to where God has already revealed himself: Holy Scripture. “Maybe God wanted her to desire knowing Him more than having answers.”

An exceptional story that gave spiritual insight with a backdrop of a historically significant event.

THE CHRISTMAS HOUSE by Beverly Lewis, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

A Christian Fiction Amish Christmas Novella

in Lancaster County with Holiday Romance, in the Small Town of Hickory Hollow

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
Good things take time to grow. – Ella Mae Zook

With her wonderful storytelling abilities, Beverly Lewis entertains you with this heartwarming tale of family, faith, and loving your neighbors no matter who they are. It’s been many years since I’ve read a book by Lewis and I’m asking myself why. I always find myself feeling like I’ve come home with one of her novels. She first introduced me to this thing called Christian fiction with her Daughters of Abram series and I have since then discovered so many other CF authors!

I love the unfolding of the warm and gentle romance between Liz and Matthew. Could this be the man God has for her? Maybe even her dad has done a little matchmaking knowing Liz’s desire for a husband and eventual children. Liz and Matthew were wonderful characters; I was rooting for them the whole time! I really enjoyed watching the close-knit family ties between Liz’s mom, sister and her church community. Their strong Amish faith is something I always love reading about.

This story takes place just before Christmas, so experiencing all the preparation and traditions from an Amish point of view was a lot of fun. There is also mention of an English family who moved into their neighborhood and I like Liz’s heart to try to reach them in spite of a lot of opposition from her Amish community. What she does at the end was very heartwarming! The Christmas House has it all for me; faith, family, a touch of romance, tight-knit community and being the hands and feet of Christ to those who are outsiders. And through Beverly Lewis’s pen, she brought it to life for me!

BackCover Blurb:
Beverly Lewis, the number-one bestselling author of Amish fiction, delivers a delightful Christmas novella of faith, romance, and heartwarming holiday traditions.

With the holidays approaching, Liz Lantz is dedicated to using her Hickory Hollow buggy tour business to share God's love with the Englisher tourists who visit her Lancaster County community. But when her father and brother are called away for a while, Dat finds a young Amishman to assist her on the tours in her brother's place, much to Liz's dismay. Regardless, the popularity of her Christmas House Buggy Tour means she could use the help, so as the countdown to Christmas begins, she works alongside Matthew Yoder, who quickly takes a genuine interest in the tour customers--and Liz.

As an Englisher family in Hickory Hollow expresses their festive spirit with a lavishly decorated house for the second year running, Liz's Amish community becomes increasingly concerned about attracting unwanted traffic and attention, and Liz wonders if there is any way to bridge the gap to help the new neighbors feel welcome. At the same time, she grapples with her growing feelings for Matt, whose position with her is only temporary. Can she find a way to bring harmony to Hickory Hollow in time for Christmas?

Beverly Lewis's homespun Amish romance will draw in readers who love family, small towns, and Christmas festivities. This charming holiday novella brings cheer and faith for the winter season.

OF CLOAKS AND DAGGERS #2

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?"

An age old question plagues Philippa Cashel as she navigates the complexities of a friendship very dear to her heart that seems threatened by the past. Another person in her sphere is struggling with similar issues as he navigates positioning in the House of Commons, simultaneously serving the crown as an investigator. Sir Bertrand Thorndike is walking a very fine line while trying to uncover powerful forces working to influence votes.

Teamed together by the Duke of Haverly himself, Philippa and Bertie gain opportunity to learn much about each other; Philippa not only oversees her mission, The Princess Charlotte Eleos School for Women in Need, but manages to provide decor guidance for Bertie's new residence while joining him on covert surveillance. Their joint operations ratchet up several notches when a badly injured woman finds refuge at Eleos and Bertie's trail of crumbs lead him straight into the lair of a very dangerous adversary.

The ending? They never saw it coming, but I wholeheartedly believe their reading audience not only saw it, but couldn't wait for it to happen. Definitely more to come in this wonderful series where the cast of characters has formed a very tight community and their adversaries have been put on notice!

"I'm trying to help you . . . Trust me. Please."

Trusting an unfamiliar voice in the shadows of what must be a cave seemed to be Brooklyn Wright's only choice; after all, running for her life after chronicling suspicious activity in one of Shadow Cove's hidden inlets, she found herself creeping through the dark with a yet unseen rescuer.

Forbes Ballentine was back in Shadow Cove under an assumed name trying to solve a decades-old crime, the brutal murders of his family. Happening upon the beautiful brunette tangled up on his property was indeed a surprise, not a particularly welcome one, but nevertheless his sense of honor would not allow Forbes to ignore her plight.

Thus begins the unraveling of well kept secrets! Although the plot spun in circles just a bit too long in the beginning, there is no doubt whatsoever about the amazing finish!

THE ATLAS OF UNTOLD STORIES by Sara Brunsvold, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Until the fear is quieted, the hope can't be heard."

A road trip. An adventure. An experiment of sorts, but to Chloe Vance it was a lifeline. Spending time with her mother and sister was important to her, asking them to step outside of their comfort zones? . . .  a huge step of faith . . . because even though they didn't know it yet, Chloe's upcoming plans included a gigantic leap. . . all the way to Prague, where her dream job awaits.

Plotting a map featuring a menagerie of literary sites scattered throughout several midwestern states, Chloe prays that God will write His story upon their hearts as the miles beneath Goldie's (yes, her car has a name, she's that kind of girl!) tires challenge each woman's patience and preconceived notions about who they are and what they can become . . . dare she hope for the kind of bond that never leaves anyone behind? At times, it looks doubtful (or even impossible).

This carefully crafted character driven story uses its backdrop of historical references to awe inspire the women within its chapters to reach beyond their expectations, their fears, and their disappointments; turning to the One who can be their "courage to be still . . . led out of the valley by a shepherd".

THE ATLAS OF UNTOLD STORIES by Sara Brunsvold, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

Contemporary Women's Fiction Book about Books
and a Family Road Trip through Midwest America

PAULA'S REVIEW:

“On a road trip aimed at celebrating perspective-shaping books, her mom and sister staunchly remained the main characters in their own stories.”

A spur of the moment road trip to visit towns with literary connections was concocted by Chloe Vance so she could bond better with her mother Edie and reveal a life changing opportunity. Her sister, Lauren, reluctantly joins them after being let go from her job. But neither wants to reveal their secrets just yet. Mom Edie tells herself she is protective of her daughters but her relationship in the past with her own mother colors her perspective.

I loved the scenes in St. Louis, Mansfield and Branson because I live in Missouri. The literary settings were so much fun to learn about.

A defining moment came near the end when secrets came out in the open and the women realized that they really saw each other for the first time.

This was a book that caused me to deeply reflect on family relationships. A stabilizing character was dad Grant, who supported the three women and kept confidences.

The story was somber at times but had humor and showed the stages of spiritual maturity of each of the women. It was very different from the other books by this author but not any less significant.

THIS PROMISED LAND by Cathy Gohlke, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"For all the years she'd longed to come home, now all she wanted was to leave."

Sixty-five years old and on the cusp of finally living out her dreams, Ginny Pickering Boyden is drawn back to her roots by a surprising piece of correspondence, the contents of which have the potential to postpone her carefully laid plans, if not cancel them altogether. For decades her brother had led her to believe that she wasn't welcome to return to the beautiful Virginia property known for miles around as the Wetherill Pickering's Christmas Tree Farm. What she is about to discover is that things are not always what they seem . . . especially now that Ginny owns the entire property.

Not only is Ginny confused about this recent turn of events, her two nephews are struggling as well; one is furious that he has been misled, the other has just arrived with three scraggly children in tow with only the clothes on their backs. To further complicate things, the farm is in deep financial straits making Ginny seriously consider selling and moving on, but her heart and her head are in disagreement; this land has been in her family for years and these people are the only family she has left. Is there a way to help bind the wounds between brothers, while working hard enough to make the farm profitable, and . . . possibly seek redemption for the mistakes of her past?

Prepare yourself! What you will read between the covers of this book will undoubtedly send you scurrying deep towards the corners of your own heart where disappointments and regrets know exactly where to hide and where hope rises up to demand a chance to be set free. Using carefully crafted characters (you will love the children as much as Ginny does!), the author tells her own rendition of a most beloved parable, the return of the prodigal son.

"God made it possible. He prepared the feast ahead of time - ahead of all of us. We just didn't realize it. We only needed to walk through the door."

When she ran away as a young war bride, she was cut off from her family forever . . . or so she believed. Decades later, maybe the only way to move on is to go home.

Ginny Pickering Boyden can’t wait for her last day of work, when she’ll be free to pursue a lifelong ambition through a master gardener apprenticeship. But an unexpected letter brings shocking news: Ginny has inherited her family’s Christmas tree farm, a dream she’d long ago given up.

Facing a past laced with memories and lies she’s tried hard to bury, a furious nephew who thought the land would be his, and a failing farm with a mountain of debt, Ginny returns to New Scrivelsby, Virginia, determined to sell. But when her younger nephew, a Vietnam vet, appears with demons of his own and three young children in tow, Ginny isn’t sure what to do. Too much of their story reminds Ginny of her own. She has little hope, however, that three generations of warring Pickerings can set aside their differences to restore all that’s broken, both on the land and in their hearts.

Set against the beautiful and rugged landscape of the Blue Ridge Mountains,
This Promised Land is the story of a daughter’s longing to make sense of the past and of the unbreakable bonds that bring prodigals home.

-A modern take on the prodigal son story, written by a four-time Christy award–winning author

SECRETS TO KEEP series #2

REBECCA'S REVIEW
"I need help . . . The police are here and I do not know what to do."

When law professor Margeaux Robbin's phone rings in the middle of the night, she never expected to hear one of her students issuing a plea for help . . . from a murder scene? Margeaux's experience came solely from years of teaching law, rather then having to apply it to a criminal case that was most certainly headed for the courtroom. Anneleise is a German exchange student and obviously innocent of any wrong-doing (right?) except being at the wrong place at the wrong time, with the victim's blood on her clothes and no alibi that anyone can corroborate. Anneleise needs help and unfortunately the one man that would be best for the job had been obnoxiously interrupting Margeaux' dreams.

Chase Crandall is suffering from burn-out, especially after a former client was found murdered in jail. While trying to decide whether or not to even continue as a defense attorney, he is handed Anneliese's case along with her stubborn law professor who inserts herself into the entire scenario. Reluctantly agreeing to hire her into the case, Chase realizes a little too late what a distraction Margeaux Robbins could turn out to be . . . but the clock is ticking and all the evidence indicates their client is guilty of the charge. His inconvenient attraction will just have to wait.

And then . . . things only gets worse.

A finely architected plot with near perfect pacing and a symphony of characters whose discordant notes finally find harmony, making this legal suspense impossible to put down!

THE ANGEL OF SECOND STREET by Barbara Tifft Blakey, Reviewed by Trixi and Rebecca #NewRelease

Enduring Hope Book 1
TRIXI'S REVIEW:
I'm not sure how to review this book. On one hand, I found it refreshing that Ida has a passion for reaching out to prostitutes on second street and presenting the hope and love Jesus has for them. As well as Chinese immigrants—especially their cook Qui—in her hometown of Eureka California in 1884. On the other hand, her methods of going about it shows she lacks the maturity or common sense a young lady of her standing should.

With no idea of the level of danger going into areas of Chinatown or the red light district unaccompanied poses, she puts herself in precarious situations seemingly without thought as to what could happen. I feared for her character on more than one occasion and the position she often put herself in. However, I do admire how Blaine helps her find ways to fulfill her desire to reach out to the lost and lessen the dangers surrounding her impulsive nature. It seems these two work well together in spite of resistance from their families.

Overall, it's a good book and the intent of the heart of both Ida and Blaine is admirable. It made me ponder ways in which I can reach the lost in my own life; whether it be unsaved coworkers, family members or those whom I deal with in everyday life. To have the same passion and drive to want to preach Jesus is what I want more than anything. It gave me much to think about!

That being said, I'm not sure this book was for me. The story was well-paced, well-written, engaging and left me pondering my own walk with Christ. I think because of Ida's immaturity and impulsive ways, it was quite off-putting. I do realize she was only 17—and sometimes young people of this age bracket don't always think things through—but with her genteel upbringing and time period in history, I feel she would have been a bit more mature in her decisions. Lastly, the story ended much too abruptly and left me with more questions than answers. I did enjoy reading the Author's Note at the end of the book explaining much of the historical tidbits included in the book.

I hope as a reader you come to your own conclusion about this story, it might be just the perfect book for you!

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"God had opened the eyes of her heart, and everywhere Ida looked she saw hurting people."

It was her calling. Ida Dempsey, in spite of her privileged upbringing, wanted to share the love of Jesus with those in her community who were living on the fringes, considered by most as the "least of these". Her methodology was a little flawed at times (admittedly quite flawed according to societal standards), and marriage was not her immediate priority until . . . one summer afternoon she caught the attention of Blaine Prescott . . . "there had been that moment, that incredible moment, when their eyes met and he felt she was the one, the only one ever, for him". . . Rather bold, wouldn't you say?

This story progresses with a certain relaxed intensity, as one hurdle after another is thrown in front of this young couple who long to become better acquainted; joining not only their hands but also their hearts as they endeavor to serve those have been ignored and despised. Readers will love the subtle twists and turns, as well as a few monumental revelations, all while steeped in significant historical events within Eureka, California during the mid-1880's.
*I voluntarily reviewed this book for Barbour Publishing. The opinions stated above are entirely my own. 3.5 stars

Inventor Set in the 1900s on the Coast of England)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was an awe-inspiring book that had a mysterious mansion as a setting. With vibrant words, the author weaves a spellbinding story that packs a spiritual punch. The steampunk vibes draw you into its fantasy-like atmosphere but it is completely believable. The characters are diverse, from a pirate/butler, to grasping relatives after an inheritance, to a girl who just wants to connect with the inventor of Blakely house.

The whole mystery of inventor Emmet Sinclair, speaks to the mystery of the Creator of the Universe and all that it holds. “It is not about how, it is about Who!” Sydney reconnects with God as she comes to see His presence in the beauty of the natural world. THE SCARLET RIBBON by Naomi Stephens, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Hang this outside your tent. Tomorrow. I'll watch for your signal  . . . and I will return for you."

Buried beneath layers of heartache and regret, Rebekah Stanton now finds herself caught between two struggles for predominance in a male-dominated world where subterfuge might just win the battle. When a bloody stranger with an aura of secrets lands in her bed, her role as a local prostitute shifts into something quite yet undefined.

Benjamin Renshaw is walking a very fine line; working as a Patriot spy while mingling among British soldiers could cost him his life. When a beautiful woman gets thrust into the middle through no fault of her own, Ben's chisled determination and well honed focus loses a chink; can he trust her to keep his secrets or is he just using her in the same manner as so many men before him? A scarlet ribbon could make all the difference.

Exceptional! Not only does this story dive headfirst into the annuls of our nation's history, (with vestiges of the Old Testament character of Rahab) but it does so with persons whose interminable courage and determination jump directly off the page and into the heart. Where is God in the midst this mayhem, you might ask? He's in every prayer!

"How often. . . had she pleaded with God for mercy, for deliverance? . . . For the strength to step out of the darkness of her past and into the light, wherever it may lead."

With an attack on the fort brewing in the background and the father of her child returned to serve with the British, Rebekah is torn between old dreams and new hope, struggling all the while to find peace and forgiveness in a place of rising conflict.

GUILTY UNTIL INNOCENT by Robert Whitlow, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I don't know much about post-conviction relief claims except they're almost never successful. . . Do your best . . . That's all I ask."

Tasked by Joe Moore's family to petition the court for post-conviction relief, attorney Ryan Clark is determined to work hard for his client while juggling a higher than expected case load in a new job that has all the markings of a small town mine field.

Joe Moore was convicted of a double homicide twenty five years prior while under the influence of methamphetamine. He became a model prisoner after a conversion experience that turned his focus towards prison ministry, discipling the men in his unit, garnering respect from prison officials. Meeting the young lawyer started Joe down a path that he never expected, or honestly wasn't convinced that he even wanted, but as the case moves forward even Joe has to admit that perhaps God has a much broader plan in mind.

Amidst unexpected circumstances at home and at work, Ryan is nearly stretched beyond his own capabilities, unfortunately falling prey to the shadows that hidden secrets evoke; exposure is not an option, especially not now.

A deeply spiritual story, leaving the sensation of having read something rather miraculous in the rearview mirror of each and every reader.

WHEN THE SKY BURNED by Liz Tolsma, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“Disaster rarely announces its arrival. Rather it bursts through the door and refuses to leave until it has finished ravaging everything and anyone inside.”
I am so glad this story has been told. For 11 years, I lived 38 miles from this small town, Peshtigo, Wisconsin, and visited the tiny fire museum.

Ms Tolsma brought this horrific event to life after researching eyewitness accounts. She also spun a terrific love story that took place during this time. The characters of Mariah, Angelina and Jay were so realistic. Their story encompassed the tragedy and the aftermath with an added undercurrent of gambling, graft and embezzlement. The descriptions were riveting and Mariah and her paintings were fascinating.

Through it all, the story told of sustaining faith in the midst of dismal circumstances and showed that forgiveness and justice prevailed.

STORM WARNING by Elizabeth Goddard, Reviewed by Rebecca and Paula #ReleaseDay

(Hidden Bay Book #1): (Christian Romantic Suspense Thriller with
Mystery and Survival Set at a Washington Storm Lodge)

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"She just had to focus and climb. She'd be up on top soon. Otherwise, she'd be swept away forever."

Remi Grant's efforts to rescue a little dog along the rocky cliffs of the Washington coast was a race against tides, and one that Remi was in present danger of losing . . . until the strong hand of a total stranger pulls her to safety . . . setting off a series of events that makes Remi wonder if she really wants to remember what her mind is determined to forget.

Former military pilot Hawk Beckett has come to the Cedar Trails Lodge to adjust his outlook on the future. When he sees the lodge manager dangling off the rungs of a shredded rope ladder, he springs into action. But it's obvious the lady is suspicious underneath her polite gratitude. It doesn't take long before the two are thrown together again; Hawk manages to save Remi's life for the second time in one day.

What is going on?

With dizzying speed, this story jumps headfirst into a labyrinth of forgotten details, frantic determinations to sort out the truth, and an assortment of players whose motives remain tucked in the shadows. Following its rapid launch, the action decelerates into a comfortable, but mildly predictable holding pattern before accelerating again towards a didn't-see-that-coming kind of landing. Fans of romantic suspense . . . hang on for the ride!

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was a page turner from the get-go, with nonstop, action and heart pounding scenes of danger.

Remi has hidden at Cedar Trails Lodge in the Pacific Northwest for two years, trying to recoup her memories after a close call with death. The storm of the decade is approaching, but so is someone who is after Remi, urging her to remember before it’s too late. Hawk comes to her rescue more than once, and he becomes the one person she can trust.

This plot was very complicated with many twists and uncertainty lurking in the background. The characters were focused on doing the right thing, even with limited knowledge

The author gave Remi a strong faith to sustain her, even when she has gaps in her memory. Hawk is weaker in his faith, but it grows as the story unfolds. They rely on God when things get tough and boy do they get tough

Riveting, action, and things that are not what they seem had me turning pages until the end.

UNEASY STREET by Becky Wade, Reviewed by Kim #ReleaseDay

KIM'S REVIEW:

I have really enjoyed each story in the Sons of Scandal series. Uneasy Street has so many things I love in a romance! it has great characters, banter, humor, complex family relationships, faith, and lessons on forgiveness.

I absolutely loved Max! He’s the perfect swoony male character that I look for in my romance novels. He’s confident, smart, funny, kind, and caring. I loved the slow progression of his and Sloane’s relationship and their chemistry was off the charts- or as Ivy would say, “spark-y!” Sloane is a bit of a complex character due to her family history. Her growth throughout the story felt real and believable. I really enjoyed Ivy’s character, her story, and how it ended. One of my favorite things about this novel is the lesson on forgiving versus not forgiving and how that could affect your life.

Uneasy Street by Becky Wade is the third and final story in the Sons of Scandal series. I’m seriously going to miss these characters. While I’m sad it’s over, I am looking forward to reading whatever Ms. Wade writes next!

GRANDMA RUTH DOESN'T GO TO FUNERALS by Sharon Mondragon, Reviewed by Rebecca #ReleaseDay

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I am Sarah Elizabeth, Grandma Ruth's favorite granddaughter."

Living the role of Grandma Ruth's favorite means that Sarah doesn't always have a lot of free time . . . running all over town at her beloved grandma's bidding (after working full time hours as an accountant)and yes . . . attending funerals in her stead, only to come home and share every detail of the elaborate event . . . every single little detail.

There was one funeral in particular that catapulted to extreme importance, because the widow (a very close friend of Grandma Ruth) had become utterly distraught over her husband's last words, which made those words in question extremely important to Grandma Ruth, which in turn made them a priority for Sarah Elizabeth too  . . . to "investigate", no gossip allowed, only conversations that qualified as investigative.

In addition to her newly minted role as the household detective, Sarah is juggling her personal life, or lack thereof, while trying to side step set-ups by the grandmothers (now there were two seniors interested in her love life). Was that a bad thing? Time would tell.

This charming ode to southern grandmothers is absolutely delightful in every way on every page. Case closed!
