RACE AGAINST TIME by Christy Barritt, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Really, she wanted to just pretend this had all been a nightmare and she'd wake up soon."

If only. Madison Jacobs nearly died when a masked intruder put a knife to her throat, coerced a suicide note and then left her fighting for her life in her own home. If not for the quick response by her neighbor Brady Phillips, a local county detective, she would have succumbed to the reality that someone had a reason to kill her.

Nothing about Madison's case made any sense. A single mother with a four year son, struggling to make ends meet after the tragic death of her husband was not the typical victim. Something about the entire episode caused Brody Phillips to dig deeper into the case, and what he found convinced him to stick close to the lovely widow, for more reasons than just one.

A clever, high-stakes case with an endearing outcome and inspiring elements of faith.

Time’s up, Madison.

When a masked intruder leaves Madison Jacobs fighting for her life in her own home, she discovers the terrifying truth: The attack wasn't random, and whoever wants her dead isn't finished. As the widowed mother of a young son, she knows the danger threatening her quiet coastal life in Seaford, Virginia, is only just beginning.

Detective Brody Philips came to Seaford to escape the pressure and heartbreak he left behind in New York City. Quiet, guarded, and determined to keep to himself, Brody never intended to get involved with his next-door neighbor. But when he interrupts an attempt on her life, he's drawn into a case that quickly turns personal.

As Brody and Madison work together to find answers, their investigation uncovers a disturbing pattern—her attack is only the latest in a string of carefully staged deaths haunting the town’s waterfront community. Now they’re in a race against time to stop a madman . . . because each tick of the clock brings a killer closer to finishing what he started.

CONSPIRACY by Colleen Coble, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

A Sanctuary Novel Book 3

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Riveting suspense as Paradise and brother Drew try to figure out the decades long mystery of who killed their parents. As the romance plays out for Blake and Paradise, they must hold onto their faith when trouble follows them and endangers the wildlife sanctuary yet again.

The wrap up to the series was exciting and full of surprises. I liked the interaction between Paradise and Blake’s family. The memories keep unfolding for Paradise as she remembers what happened years ago. But if the principal players of that fateful night are gone, who is behind the attempts on her life? Who does not want the truth to come out? This bad guy was really hard to figure out.

Along with the mystery, there are interesting facts about the animals at the sanctuary. I liked that the main characters prayed about each obstacle that came across and chose to leave the outcome to God. Also, I appreciated the crossover characters in other series by this talented author.

Conspiracy, the third book in USA TODAY bestselling author Colleen Coble's Sanctuary series (following Ambush and Prowl), delivers exactly what her fans want: the ideal blend of suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat with just the right amount of romance. Perfect for fans of Laura Dave, Allison Brennan, and Lynette Eason.

Fifteen years of secrets. One chance for justice.

Just as wildlife veterinarian Paradise Alden begins to envision a future with Blake Lawson, the ghosts of her past return with a vengeance. The murder of her parents has shadowed her for fifteen years, but a new threat brings the cold case into the terrifying present. A trained leopard--a chilling embodiment of Paradise's deepest fears--is now stalking her.

Haunted by resurfacing memories, Paradise, Blake, and her newfound brother, Drew, follow a trail of clues that leads them into a web of dark family secrets. The deeper they dig, the more shocking the connections become, linking their families to a dangerous conspiracy that someone is still willing to kill to protect.

With every step closer to the truth, the killer becomes more desperate. Paradise, Blake, and Drew must race to expose a murderer who has remained hidden for fifteen years, but this time, they are the ones being stalked. If they can't unmask the killer, the past will destroy both the fragile future Paradise and Blake are trying to build and the family she has finally found with her brother.

A conspiracy of lemurs is a family. But a conspiracy of people can be deadly.

 (Deadly Justice Book 2)

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Quinn Kelly looked at her smart watch again for the third time in five minutes. She couldn't believe that Allie hadn't responded . . ."

There was a valid reason that Quinn Kelly's legal associate had not showed up for their Monday morning meeting. Allie Prince was dead . . . and not just deceased, but violated and brutally murdered. When F. B. I. Agents Samira Haddad and Jalen Smith show up at the scene, Quinn's complicated relationship with Samira is temporarily set aside while law enforcement quickly secures the scene and begins to gather evidence . . . very little about this crime makes any sense.

Allie's death wasn't the only interruption in Quinn's demanding schedule, she had been manipulated into representing a very powerful tech mogul in a criminal case. The infuriating man had backed her into a corner with his undeniably devious innuendos making Quinn determined to maintain the upper hand. As both the trial and murder investigation proceed, the noose tightens when Quinn is made aware that Allie was not the only victim of this vicious killer. What makes it even worse? Quinn knew both women. Was she the common denominator? If so, Samira needs her help.

An absolutely fascinating blend of knowns and unknowns, where unlikely alliances form stronger bonds while secrets work just as hard to destroy them.

Christian Suspense (A Holly Novel Book 6)

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I think you'll find that we are the only detective agency that keeps marshmallows in a sealed container for customers . . . "

JGH Investigations might appear a bit unconventional, but they make up for lagging aesthetics with their iron clad determination to track down every lead. Their current assignment hits extremely close to heart and home, for Holly's best friend Jace has requested that she and Jordan find out what really happened to Jace's brother Scott, who remains in a coma after a vicious beating. Unfortunately, Jace's mother continues to pursue legal action to end life support, literally burying any evidence related to the attack. Something isn't adding up. (Or being covered up?)

As the layers of the evening in question begin to unravel, the two investigators manage to track down leads that were either missed or ignored, directing their focus towards questionable characters, reluctant witnesses, dead bodies; resulting in multiple attempts on their lives. What in the world had Scott Walker been into, and how in the world is Holly going to explain it all to Jace? (If she has breath to tell the story.)

With her signature humor and deft plotting skills, (not to mention designing one of the most iconic personalities in contemporary suspense) this author has penned yet another wonderful blend of character and story, displaying deep spiritual connotations and unexpected outcomes.

I couldn't turn the pages fast enough!

THE WRIGHT HEROES OF MAINE Series #9

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Much as she didn't like this playboy-turned-hero-turned . . . whatever he was now, she was no fan of drug cartels."

Kenzie Wright and Jasper Aylett met under duress, to put it mildly. What began as an ordinary day, doing what Kenzie loved to do best in her life as a yacht captain, turned ugly when pirates appeared out of nowhere and attempted to commandeer her boat . . . but wait! Another team of . . .  .whatever they were . . . whisked Kenzie and her crew away from danger before blowing up her boat!!! Boom!

The drama didn't stop there, in fact, it had only just begun. For while Kenzie's crew left on a rescue boat, Kenzie was left behind with Jasper, a DEA informant. The man had the gall to tell her that she had been transporting contraband; drugs, and lots of them. Before she could digest that disturbing bit of information, Jasper whisked her off to a safe house, put a wig on her head, pulled out a party dress, and off they went, under disguise, straight into a den of vipers.

This starts-fast and never-slows-down action romance hits the road running, but it does slow down enough for deep spiritual conversations and quiet considerations of what life could be like if everything turned out like it does in the movies, where the bad guys get caught and the hero drives off into the sunset with his lady. As you might imagine, it's a lot more complicated than that.

Put on your life jacket, you are going to need it!

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Of course she knew that evil's presence didn't mean God wasn't God or that he wasn't good. But it sometimes made it hard to find him."

Having survived for so long feeling lost and alone in her fears and regrets, former gymnast Chloe Ainsworth finally works up the courage to solicit the help of a local legal clinic, deciding that she cannot move forward with her life until she resolves deeply traumatic experiences from her past. Law student Dare Shepherd listens carefully to her testimony, and agrees that the intimate personal information that Chloe has entrusted into his oversight needs to litigated, but if, as his supervisor insists, they need corroboration from additional sources in order to file a formal complaint, that poses a significant problem. Years have gone by and the witnesses were all minors at the time.

As if conjured up, the man from Chloe's nightmares arrives back in town after fourteen years of absence, and gains employment at the very gym where multiple young girls had been compromised. With a sense of urgency, Chloe and Dare seek every bit of evidence they can find, and what they uncover is extremely disturbing and inherently more dangerous than they ever imagined.

Navigating these case details combined with absorbing the emotional mine fields buried throughout this story necessitates a reader who not only admires amazing plot twists, but solemnly trusts the author to handle sensitive material in such a way that the end result brings solid assurance that God never means for us to feel alone, or forsaken, or forgotten.

KIM'S REVIEW:
Hunted in the Mountains by Addie Ellis was one of my favorite reads of 2024, so when I saw Hiding from Danger, I knew I had to pick it up.

This story kicks off with a bang and doesn’t let up until the exciting finale. Rick, Natalie, and her niece are on the run, hiding from a killer. The tension really never eases in this story! Just when you think you can catch your breath, another unexpected event occurs. I found myself suspecting so many different characters along the way. Ms. Ellis does a great job of dropping breadcrumbs throughout the story.

I really liked Rick and the selfless way he helped Natalie and Shelly. I also enjoyed how their relationship developed; it felt natural and believable. The addition of the epilogue was a great touch and wrapped things up perfectly.

I can’t wait for Addie Ellis’s next story!

WHEN JUSTICE COMES by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"The only way she could end the vendetta with Michael was to find out more about the way it had started."

To say that Savannah Webster's family history was a convoluted disarray of turmoil was an understatement. Now it seemed that the tentacles of greed and revenge were targeting her ten year old nephew, whose murdered mother had clearly stated that Savannah should raise Simon if something should happen to her, which meant that Simon would live with both his Savannah and his Uncle Hez Webster after the two remarried in just a matter of months. Simon's substantial trust fund shone as a beacon to those, including his birth father and grandfathers, who cared nothing about Simon and more about fame and fortune.

However, the situation went deeper than that. Much, much deeper, thrusting Savannah and Hez into unprovoked turmoil over Simon's custody and right back into the bulls-eye of a criminal enterprise that they had initially identified, cornered and contained.

One of the many things that I loved about this story was that it was not only an exceptionally fine series conclusion, but it also revealed how tightly all three books had been woven together into one fascinating narrative, broken up into episodes that were destined for a grand finale, and this book was exactly that!

USA TODAY bestselling romantic suspense author Colleen Coble and Rick Acker deliver the final book in their beloved Tupelo Grove series.

Hez and Savannah Webster have survived storms that would bury others without a love as strong as theirs--but can they withstand the final battle in the deadly Legare-Willard feud that threatens to sweep away everything they've fought for?

Hezekiah "Hez" Webster and his fiancée, Savannah, stand on the brink of a new life, but their dreams are haunted by specters of the past. Just as they're getting ready to adopt her nephew, two other petitioners also file for custody--both of whom only want Simon for their own gains.

Between the financial company that Hez outmaneuvered to save the university from ruin and the bad blood from the head of the Willard family, it's hard to say who wants them out of the way more. Hez and Savannah's quest for justice leads them through a labyrinth of family law, where loyalties are tested and trust is a dangerous luxury when every decision could be their last.

With the clock ticking, Hez and Savannah must confront the ghosts of their past and their deepest fears to secure a future for Simon. But with every secret revealed, the stakes grow higher. Can they build the family they've always dreamed of, or will their enemies succeed in tearing them apart forever?

The Tupelo Grove series reaches its breathtaking conclusion as an enemy's agenda for revenge runs darker than swamp water and justice remains as precarious as quicksand in this heart-pounding narrative that underscores the power of redemption and forgiveness.

An excellent, suspenseful story that kept me reading until the wee hours.

I was captivated by the premise that Detective Lainie Jensen is shocked at the death of her sister by a shark attack while on vacation in Hawaii. Lots of intrigue and unfolding connections to the first arrest Lainie made as a rookie cop. A lot can happen in fifteen years and the web of deceit gets more tangled.

At first Lainie is upset with FBI agent Ben Isaacs when he takes her present case from her. But things happen to pair them together.

The drama and excitement were mesmerizing. The romance was subtle but an integral part if the story. Faith plays an important part of Ben’s life and Lainie come to appreciate her spiritual roots and soon realizes she can trust God again.

After traveling there to look for her, Lainie quickly realizes her brother-in-law Stan is telling law enforcement a story that doesn’t appear to add up.

FBI special agent Ben Isaacs has spent six months collecting evidence to take down a money laundering operation. While his fellow agent Efren Gomez goes undercover to infiltrate the ring, Ben investigates those connected to it, including Stan Moffitt, who Ben believes could help lead to the criminal kingpin. Then Stan’s wife goes missing just days after Ben contacted her seeking information, and he knows there’s more to this case, especially when he loses contact with Efren and law enforcement comes up short in their search for him.

When Ben’s and Lainie’s investigations converge, Lainie’s not eager to work alongside Ben given their complicated history, but she’s willing to do so if it means figuring out what Stan knows and locating Evie. Soon, Lainie can’t deny Ben’s dedication to finding the truth or her growing admiration for him. THE LIAR'S TREASURE by Connie Mann, Reviewed by Paula and Rebecca

A Speranza Team Novel Book 2

PAULA'S REVIEW:
In this follow-up to The Crown Conspiracy, the Speranza secret society is at it again with more fast-paced action. Camille Abernathy and her friends are after artifacts that combine mystery and danger with a treasure hunt. Many are after The Liar’s Treasure, but only the worthy can win. And the ones who seek only know that it is something very valuable.

In this complicated, high-octane plot, the team is jetting across the world to put all the pieces together. Camille, her daughter and grandmother are caught in the middle. Lucien Broussard, best friend of her dead husband, comes on the scene to help the ladies in their quest. Could Lucien become more than an old friend, as he also is looking for the treasure. Is he looking for romance with Camille? Faith and honesty are key in this riveting book. “We have to put feet to our faith. Faith is easy when you are standing on familiar ground.”

I loved The Crown Conspiracy and this book is a dynamic sequel. I cannot wait for the next installment.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Time to put the next phase of his plan in place. And show these meddling women who they were dealing with."

Time was of the essence. Camille Abernathy, along with the other members of her elite secret Speranza team are tasked with locating what was known throughout the world of treasure hunters as "the liar's treasure"; items dating back centuries, believed to hold the power of discernment, delivering a death sentence upon those deemed as disingenuous. The stakes become exponentially higher when Camille's daughter innocently exposes one of the items, putting herself squarely in the crosshairs of international villains.

Help arrives in a variety of ways; putting "feet to her faith", learning that there is more to a beloved grandmother than meets the eye, and trusting someone from her past whom Camille desperately wants to believe has her best interests at heart, and there is certainly a tremendous amount of heart beating inside Lucien Broussard.

This impressive story reads like an action film on steroids, a blend of National Treasure meets Raiders of the Lost Ark. The plot is complex but comprehensible, the heroines are strong, courageous and skilled in their areas of expertise, and although the hero may not grab the spotlight very often, when he does . . . it's a sight to behold. An altogether thrilling addition to what every reader will "hope" is an ongoing series.

*I purchased a copy and was under no obligation to provide a positive review. 4.5 stars

BackCover Blurb:
From the acclaimed author of Beyond Risk and The Crown Conspiracy, hailed as a "wild ride" by Library Journal, comes an action-packed adventure about a mysterious diary and a thrilling, high-stakes treasure hunt.

Camille Abernathy ignored rumors of The Liar's Treasure and her family's connection to it . . . until someone put a target on her daughter's back. Growing up in New Orleans, such tall tales were as common as beignets and gumbo. But when Camille's teenage daughter, Cass, posts pictures of a centuries-old diary her uncle gave her, she unwittingly attracts dozens of treasure hunting fanatics who are convinced Cass and the diary can lead them to a valuable cache.

To keep her daughter safe, Camille enlists the help of Speranza, a secret society always ready to help women in need. Together, they set out on a globe-trotting journey to find The Liar's Treasure while also investigating a suspicious death related to Camille's childhood friend. The deeper they dig, the more they suspect it's all connected.

Chasing clues from New Orleans to Italy to the Bahamas, Camille and her friends receive unexpected assistance—and unwanted competition—from a handsome treasure hunter from Camille's past. Then Cass is kidnapped, and finding the treasure truly becomes a matter of life and death.

DEATH FOLLOWS HER by Rachel Dylan, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Deadly Justice Book #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"This case could be a career maker."

Three executive officers of major corporations have died, and F. B. I. Special Agents Samira Addad and Jaylen Smith are tasked with determining whether or not their deaths are connected in some convoluted sort of way. The victims were all represented in high profile lawsuits by attorney Quinn Kelly; which by the way, she handily won. So is this a matter of someone taking the law into their own hands?

Obvious or obscure, Samira and Jaylen follow every lead, to no avail. Encouraging the defendant in Kelly's current case to employ private security, they urge Quinn to accept protection as well, the theory being that the deaths could be a vendetta against her widely known success, especially after the attorney senses that someone is watching her every move. Nothing in this investigation is adding up.

With expert precision the author leads readers down multiple rabbit trails littered with red herrings and innuendos that prove exactly why the investigators are so confused. Ultimately, a resolution is reached, but totally different than the kind that readers are expecting. Fascinating book!

BackCover Blurb:

Quinn is used to high stakes. But when the threats against her escalate from online noise to something far more dangerous, she becomes both Samira's greatest asset and her greatest liability.

As the investigation pulls them deeper into a world of corporate power, buried secrets, and a killer who is one step ahead and always watching, one thing becomes terrifyingly clear—someone else is going to die.

EDGE OF TRUTH by Janice Cantore, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I'm so much bigger than you know. You're too small and insignificant to stop me."

One of her first arrests as a rookie cop has come full circle for Detective Lainie Jensen, she just doesn't know it yet.

After years of struggling over "the one that got away", Lainie can scarcely believe that Dallas Vine has criss-crossed back into her orbit as she frantically searches for answers to her sister's disappearance while on a Hawaiian vacation with her husband. Stranger still, FBI Special Agent Ben Isaacs shows up in Hawaii, determined to find out more about his partner's undercover work to take down a widespread money laundering enterprise, before he too, went missing.

Ben and Lainie get off on the wrong foot, but eventually the evidence leads them to an obvious conclusion; they are working different sides of the same case and would be better served working together. As the larger case gets stranger and stranger and the smaller details become more and more dangerous, Ben and Lainie seem poised to teeter on the very edge of truth.

This story moved along at such a graceful pace that the harrowing details never seemed rushed, but written in seamless harmony with the overall plot, which was a touch of genius, by the way. The twists and turns were meticulously timed, making the story continually interesting while slowly pulling back the curtain on a relationship that suffered setbacks, for sure, but managed to rise triumphantly in the end. Great faith elements through-out made this romantic suspense very high quality!

BackCover Blurb:
One case almost destroyed her career. Now the past seems to have caught up with her. And as a high-stakes game of truth and lies unfolds, someone’s out for retribution at any cost.

As a detective in the Long Beach Police Department’s violent crimes division, Lainie Jensen is no stranger to hard-to-crack cases and unusual disappearances, but then her sister Evie vanishes on a trip to Hawaii.

And the more the two examine the evidence, the more they suspect Evie’s disappearance is tied to a highly publicized criminal case from Lainie’s past . . . and someone is playing a perilous game aimed at personal revenge.

WHEN JUSTICE COMES by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

(A Tupelo Grove Novel Book 3)

PAULA'S REVIEW
Exciting conclusion to an absorbing series, this one kept me on the edge of my seat. Wonderful cast of characters including Savannah and Hez, a married couple who divorced after a tragedy and are now engaged and looking forward to another wedding. They are anticipating adopting her nephew Simon.

With a long-standing feud between the Willards and the LeGares and a custody battle ensuing, Savannah and Hez have more to worry about than their jobs, renovating their house and their upcoming wedding. Danger lurks around every corner as they try to honor God and decipher who to trust.

This was a fast-paced story in a beautiful setting with a complicated plot. It made me want to read the whole series again.

It is worth it to travel to Nova Cambridge, Alabama and read the story of Savannah and Hez.

BackCover Blurb:

Colleen Coble and Rick Acker's
When Justice Comes is gripping suspense with closed-door, second-chance romance.

Synopsis:

Last to Fall by Lynn H. Blackburn

GOSSAMER FALLS

She's caught in a deadly game. He's the only one who can help her win.

Bronwyn Pierce has poured everything into The Haven, her family's exclusive mountain resort in Gossamer Falls. But when financial discrepancies surface and the numbers suggest something far darker than simple mismanagement, she's forced to call on the one person with the skills to help her: Mo Quinn, a former Army intelligence officer, her first love, and the last person she ever wanted to trust again.

Mo has spent years avoiding the woman he once loved and the secrets that tore them apart. But when Bronwyn calls, he can't walk away--especially when it's clear someone wants her gone for good. As they dig deeper into the treacherous motives behind a blackmail scheme, their proximity reignites long-buried feelings neither of them are ready to face. And when the evidence points to an unexpected culprit, Mo faces an impossible choice: trust the proof in front of him or trust his heart.

With danger closing in and no one else to turn to, Bronwyn must break years of silence with Mo to uncover who's trying to destroy The Haven. They'll have to risk everything--including their hearts--to expose the truth before it's too late.

The finale to Blackburn's Gossamer Falls series is an exhilarating romantic suspense novel packed with tension. This gripping read will hook fans of the family rivalry, bodyguard, small town, second chance romance, and forced proximity tropes.

PAULA'S REVIEW:

Beautiful Gossamer Falls and the exclusive resort The Haven is the setting for the final book in this intriguing series. Bronwyn Pierce is the capable CEO of the resort that caters to the elite seeking a private getaway. But she has a troubled past with Mo Quinn and they have not spoken in years. She finds herself seeking his help as a forensic accountant when some things in the resort books do not add up. This was an emotionally charged, dynamic story with complex relationships of the feuding Pierce and Quinn clans. It also told of the solid faith of the Quinn cousins and their close bond. Hooray for praying Granny Quinn.

When the bullets start flying, danger draws ever nearer. And Mo is determined to protect Bronwyn. They are forced to evaluate the events that drew them apart. Of course Love wins in the end.

This tense story of sabotage and underhanded tactics by relatives does not let up until the explosive conclusion. I loved the whole Gossamer Falls series and this story packs a punch.
