THE FRENCH KITCHEN by Kristy Cambron, reviewed by Rebecca and Paula

A Historical Romance Set in WWII France,
Post-War Paris, and the World of Julia Child

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"The next sound Kat heard was death - the click of a Luger trigger aimed at the back of her head."

So many pieces of the puzzle ended up scattered about the snowy grounds of France's Chateau du Broutel on that fateful night. Friends took on the appearance of enemies and enemies acted suspiciously like friends. Years later Kat Harris still struggled to come to grips with all of the implications. Her overriding determination was to discover what had really happened to a beloved brother; in fact, Kat had rearranged her entire life to do just that, including entrusting her future to the one whom she still wasn't sure she could trust.

Manon Altier was in a precarious position, serving as a French chef inside the famed Chateau du Broutel, now billeted by the enemy, while she secretly aids the French Resistance. When an unexpected arrival claims to be her new personal assistant, and yet knows nothing about the inner workings of a professional kitchen, Manon pivots, trusting that much needed help has indeed landed on her doorstep.

Heavily layered from beginning to end, this story speaks volumes about the courage and tenacity of those whose lives remained at risk from the rising of the sun until the darkening of the moon. With remarkable subtlety, the author does what the reader finds impossible to do, tell the story to completion.

Cascading emotions! Outstanding characters! Fascinating historical detail! A reminder that love can bloom in a wasteland and that food can forge everlasting friendships. Embrace a book that is sure to land on multiple top reads lists, including mine.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“To look back is not to lament all we have lost, but to see how past experiences have shaped us into who we are. “

Another remarkable, well-researched story about the multiple groups working together in France during WWII and the far reaching consequences in the years following. Told in the years 1943 and 1952, Kat, Gerard, Gavin and Manon, lived a secretive, covert existence in a dangerous time under the noses of the German occupiers in France. The interesting thing was the addition of Julia Child into the story that drew on her actual role during WWII and the time that she was compiling her famous cookbook.

It was a fascinating, complicated plot that kept me turning pages. I was eager to learn more of this time in history and how the Resistance operated. “War was not for lovers, nor courage for fools.”

If you are looking for a fresh look at WWII history, try this book. You will not be disappointed.

As Paris rebuilds in the aftermath of World War II, Kat Fontaine never expected the skills she learned in a French chateau kitchen to be the key that unlocks the secrets swirling in her new post-war life.

Paris, 1952--Still haunted by the years she spent serving in the American Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during WWII, ex-pat Kat Fontaine, now living in Paris, finds a simple cookery class led by indomitable chef Julia Child unearths the tangle of gut-wrenching memories of war. A WORTHY RISK by T. E. Renich, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

SOVEREIGN LIBERTY SERIES #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"What will become of us?"

The lives of two families intersect after their sons return home from British North America following the prolonged conflict with the French and their native allies. Although Lieutenant Marcus St. James bears an external scar, the most troublesome imprints are internal. Traveling to spend time with a favored cohort, he meets Gideon Ravensworth's sister, Serenity, whose outward beauty and vivacious spirit whisper peace to a place buried deep inside his worrisome spirit. However, all is not well within the inner sanctum of the Ravensworth household as the eldest brother has gambled away a fortune, placing Serenity's honor on the line as collateral.

As Serenity's love for a most beloved younger brother and Marcus' dedication to his military commission take the two in different directions across the Atlantic, their patience and trust in each other will be severely tested as they depend upon God to direct their paths.

Overflowing with history between two continents, this story expertly displays the tightened tension between England and her colonies without overburdening the story, rather using the time period as a backdrop for an intriguing romance between two characters worthy of the risk.
*I purchased this book and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.

BackCover Blurb:
One for the land and one for the war—
One for the church, and pray for no more... –Anonymous

Serenity Ravensworth is the lone sister among four brothers who seem to match descriptive lines of an ancient, anonymous poem. The youngest has no inheritance according to English law. The next brother in line studies to be ordained at Oxford. The soldier has been in British North America fighting the French and their native allies. And the eldest usurps control of Fernsby Hall. Reckless gambling endangers all the Ravensworth brothers and puts Serenity squarely in harm’s way.

Without the aid of Serenity’s soldier-brother, former grenadier Marcus St. James would not have made it back to England. Wounded and left for dead in the wake of the massacre at Fort Michilimackinac, Lieutenant St. James is found alive eight weeks after and five hundred miles distant from his last known whereabouts. His disturbing lack of memories gnaws at his sound mind and his sense of loss is compounded by unanswered questions.

An introduction to Miss Ravensworth inspires St. James to collect shattered pieces of the life left to him. Predicated by stronger feelings than he is able to articulate, his timely rescue of her deepens the growing attachment between them. Compelled to follow the pull of unexpected opportunities in a new land, Miss Ravensworth braves the Atlantic crossing, while St. James—at Benjamin Franklin’s behest—returns to the Pennsylvania colony as a member of Charles Mason and Jeremiah Dixon’s survey team.

Far from the familiarity of England, will these two find purpose together or challenge apart as Parliament dictates stricter regulations and imposes taxation on British citizens dwelling in the North American colonies? The Seven Years’ War is over, but King George III’s Royal Proclamation is the first domino to fall on the way to igniting a revolution.

Happening upon the aftermath Bleu Galant finds Brielle and an eight year old youngster alive and relatively unharmed. Remaining at the Rose and Cross was never in his plans, but how could he in good conscience leave the one who stirs his protective instincts like none before her?

OF CLOAKS AND DAGGERS #2

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Is it ever right to do the wrong thing?"

An age old question plagues Philippa Cashel as she navigates the complexities of a friendship very dear to her heart that seems threatened by the past. Another person in her sphere is struggling with similar issues as he navigates positioning in the House of Commons, simultaneously serving the crown as an investigator. Sir Bertrand Thorndike is walking a very fine line while trying to uncover powerful forces working to influence votes.

Teamed together by the Duke of Haverly himself, Philippa and Bertie gain opportunity to learn much about each other; Philippa not only oversees her mission, The Princess Charlotte Eleos School for Women in Need, but manages to provide decor guidance for Bertie's new residence while joining him on covert surveillance. Their joint operations ratchet up several notches when a badly injured woman finds refuge at Eleos and Bertie's trail of crumbs lead him straight into the lair of a very dangerous adversary.

The ending? They never saw it coming, but I wholeheartedly believe their reading audience not only saw it, but couldn't wait for it to happen. Definitely more to come in this wonderful series where the cast of characters has formed a very tight community and their adversaries have been put on notice!

THE ENGINEERED ENGAGEMENT by Erica Vetsch, Review and Tour hosted by Paula Shreckhise #Giveaway

About the Book

Book: The Engineered Engagement

Author: Erica Vetsch

Genre: Christian Historical Romance

Release Date: July 8, 2025

A hidden genius, an ambitious shipbuilder, and a daring deception—can she prove her worth without losing her heart?

Eli Kennebrae plans to revolutionize cargo transportation on the Great Lakes. But his grandfather’s meddling obligates him to an arranged engagement. Though Josie Zahn is kindhearted and strikes his interest, Eli needs an engineer for his ship, not a fiancée.

Josie has admired Eli for years, but to him, she’s just “one of the Zahn girls.” Worse, society expects her to marry, not pursue her passion for mathematics and engineering. If she could only get Eli’s attention, she could help him achieve his goals.

Then “Professor Josephson,” a brilliant mathematical mind, provides the analyses to make Eli’s ship design a reality. As Eli finds unexpected kinship in the professor’s work, he remains unaware of the truth—Josie is the genius behind the numbers. When deception and ambition collide, will Eli see Josie for who she truly is before it’s too late?

PAULA'S REVIEW:
In this book we see if the third Kennebrae brother can outwit the machinations of their grandfather who loves to arrange marriages for his grandsons.

With a very smart heroine who would rather go to college than get married and a hero who is trying to prove his worth, this story captured the flavor of the period.
It is one of the first books Ms. Vestch wrote and it has stood the test of time in this re-release.

I enjoyed this story very much and loved to see the way the story progressed.
A favorite character was Grandma Bess who always pointed Josie to what God would be pleased with.

"But when you start trying to engineer circumstances and people, design and force God's plan to be revealed to you, or construct your future the way you want it to be, instead of the way God has for you, you run into trouble."

A delightful look into the past.

About the Author

Best-selling, award-winning author of The Debutante’s Code, first in the Thorndike & Swann Regency Mystery Series, Erica Vetsch loves Jesus, history, romance, and sports. When she’s not writing fiction, she’s planning her next trip to a history museum.

More from Erica

One of the most frequently asked questions an author gets is “Where do your ideas come from?” The truth is…all over! But for me, the main place that story ideas start is in a museum. I see an artifact or object or hear a story as I wander a museum, and I begin to wonder about the people who used the object or survived the events that led to their story being in a museum.

The Engineered Engagement was inspired by a tour of the Great Lakes cargo ship the Meteor. The Meteor is a whaleback and is on display in Superior, WI, just across the harbor from Duluth, MN where the story is set.

I first toured the Meteor when I was eleven years old…awhile ago now. But many years later my husband and I took our kids to tour this amazing piece of engineering. The design, which is characterized by low rounded hulls, decks, and deckhouses looks decidedly odd and different from other ships. This design minimized the wind and water resistance encountered in more traditional hull shapes. The creator/design engineer of the whaleback was a Scotsman named Alexander McDougall who was a ship master and seaman on the Great Lakes.

The first whaleback hit the lakes in 1887, and over the next 11 years, 43 more joined her. One of the largest whalebacks was the steamer named the Frank Rockefeller. This ship was later renamed the SS Meteor. The Meteor hauled iron ore and sand for much of her career, and she is the only whaleback that remains.

As I toured the ship, learning nautical terms and all but feeling the rolling of the deck beneath my feet, I couldn’t help but admire Alexander McDougall for ignoring the critics, the snide remarks, and the jeers that always accompany a design pioneer and creating anyway. Looking for a better way to make something or do a task should be admired. He was tenacious, and I wanted to imbue my characters, Eli Kennebrae and Josie Zahn, with that same tenacity.

The Engineered Engagement involves ship building and hydrodynamics. Now, I know nothing about either of these disciplines, but I did glean some information, hopefully enough to make my characters, Eli and Josie, sound like they do. Ah, the joys of writing fiction! And while Eli and Josie are loaded with brains and tenacity, I also wanted them to have real emotions, to care about each other. One of the joys of writing fiction is getting to live through the eyes/hearts of your characters and feel what they feel. The Engineered Engagement was a joy to write.

NO STONE UNTURNED by Jenelle Hovde, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"How easy it was to have a heart of stone in this life. To bury oneself in noble pursuits and yet risk losing connection with those we loved."

Being the daughter of the parish vicar in a small English village, Bridget Littleton often went through the motions of her faith while falling headlong into her unbridled appreciation for history and antiquities, so it was no surprise that the discovery of an ancient mosaic tile in a neighboring field stoked her undivided attention. The wonder of it all began to dim when Lord Rafe Hawthorn suddenly appears to revitalize his family's estate, which may, or may not include the property in question.

It doesn't take long for the war-wizened captain and his impetuous neighbor to stubbornly vocalize differences of opinions while slowly discovering that they share many things in common. As danger encroaches and redemption is tested, can the Bridget and Rafe accept the fact that God never intended for them to fight life's battles alone.

A lovely setting with nuggets of history spun nicely into the fabric of a most engaging story!

Recovering from wounds of both body and spirit, Captain Rafe Hawthorn is intent on restoring his long-neglected ancestral home. His plans to rebuild the abbey’s once thriving orchards require a road that will pass straight through Bridget’s potential trove of artifacts. PAULA'S REVIEW:
Another Kennebrae brother, another arranged marriage by a determined grandfather.

Annie is an heiress being forced into marriage to a man she knows nothing about. Noah is from a wealthy family and is hiding from an embarrassing accident. They meet on an Island on Lake Superior where they were hired to work at a lighthouse.
Intriguing story and a forced proximity trope with a few twists. The setting was a lighthouse and details about how it worked was interesting.

The characters drew me in. I was anxious to see how the romance and story developed.

The author kept my interest with her descriptions and intriguing plot. The faith of the characters was portrayed naturally.

I missed this series when it was first published and I am glad I got to catch up with them now.

More from Erica

I love a hidden identity story! And in the case of The Marriage Masquerade, both the hero AND the heroine are hiding their true identities.

The Marriage Masquerade features Noah, who is running from the guilt of a mistake he feels he made that lost both a Great Lakes ship and several lives. Anastasia Michaels is running away from an arranged marriage.

They both flee to a remote lighthouse on the North Shore of Lake Superior, he as an assistant lighthouse keeper and she as a housekeeper and cook.

The lighthouse in The Marriage Masquerade is based directly upon the Split Rock Lighthouse, one of my favorite places to visit along the North Shore. Situated on a cliff high above the lake, Split Rock is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the world.

When I first visited this exquisite place, I fell in love. And when I fall in love with an historical site, I need to know as much of the history of the place as I can. Several of the incidents that occur at the fictional lighthouse in the story come directly from the history of Split Rock.

Filtering liquid mercury, polishing the Fresnel lens, hiding dishes in the oven when the inspector comes, and other happenings in The Marriage Masquerade actually happened in the real lives of the lightkeepers at Split Rock.

Noah and Anastasia’s story is a forced proximity romance, with a dash of hidden identity, redemption, and learning to stand on your own two feet. I hope you’ll enjoy their journey from fearful, guilt-ridden characters to healed through love, confident, and ready to embark on a lifelong journey together.

THE LAWYER AND THE LAUNDRESS by Christine Hill Suntz, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

"Are you cooking the clothes?"

When laundress Sara O'Connor meets a teary eyed young girl behind the inn where she was working, she had no idea that her life was about to dramatically change course, yet again. Her brief interludes with Evie Kinney continue, putting Sara's job in jeopardy, yet how could she turn her back on a lonely child who needed a friend? Things take a decided turn after Sara disappears, Evie falls ill, and her father, James Kinney, a respected Toronto lawyer, goes on a desperate search to find the lovely, surprisingly cultured laundress whom his daughter has grown to love.

Inviting Sara to remain in his household as his daughter's governess, James Kinney is reprimanded by his colleagues for generating gossip, but James has deeper issues to navigate as the political temperature in the city ignites and his loyalty is questioned. Just who is Sara O'Connor?

What a beautifully written novel! The heightened sense of knowing things about the characters that they do not know themselves gives the reader an even stronger bond to the story itself, as James and Sara reach their tipping point, standing on the precipice of losing hope.

As a wise woman once said, "You figure God abandoned you, but you know deep down that's not true. He was there all along, holding you up until you was ready to stand again."

Classes with the neighbor children seem ideal until James discovers Evie is secretly spending her time with Sara O’Connor, a kind and mysteriously educated servant. For propriety’s sake, James forbids their friendship. But then Evie falls victim to the illness ravaging the city, and James must call upon Sara’s medical knowledge and her special bond with Evie to save his daughter’s life.

When Sara’s presence in his household threatens scandal, however, James offers an unexpected solution: become his wife, in name only, and help him raise Evie to be a proper young lady.

THE LAST LIGHT OVER GALVESTON by Jennifer L. Wright, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney #ReleaseDay

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"When we suffer, it reminds us that this life is short, and this world is not our home . . . Sometimes God has to tear down all the distractions . . . To see that after everything else is gone, He's still there."

Traveling as far away from home as possible, Kathleen McDaniel locks her privileged life in New York inside a proverbial closet and courageously tries to pretend the horrific chain of events that sent her running all the way until the end of the line had not happened. Landing in Galveston, Texas she collapses inside the front hall of St Mary's Orphan Asylum where she assumes a new identity and prays that her nightmare will never find her.

Her plan works until her timeline is shortened and an historic storm brews off the coast of Texas, eventually taking out every last light over Galveston. Will Kathleen survive yet another tragedy as she struggles to keep one promise while making another that she may not live long enough to keep?

But one horrific event shattered her picturesque life. Now she has fled as far as the train line and a pocketful of money would take her, finding refuge at the St. Mary’s Orphan Asylum on Galveston Island, where she helps the nuns care for their young charges and prays her past will not find her. Despite her tenuous standing at the orphanage—and the grief and betrayal that drove her from home—Kathleen slowly begins to make friends. There is Emily, the novice nun she rooms with; Maggie, the tempestuous young girl who only bonds with Kathleen; and Matthew, a kind, handsome man recently employed by Isaac Cline at Galveston’s office of the US Weather Bureau.

Then in one fateful day, Kathleen’s fragile new life begins to crack as it becomes clear that she can’t run far enough to escape the reach of her former life. Meanwhile, as troubling news about a storm crossing the Gulf from Cuba swirls in the Weather Bureau offices, Matthew holds fast to Cline’s belief that no hurricane can touch Galveston. A LESSON IN PROPRIETY by Jen Turano, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Merriweather Academy Series #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Is it just me, or do you think it's odd that animals were wandering around the castle?"

Following a failed engagement, loss of family fortune and foreclosure on their lavish New York home, Drusilla Merriweather packs up her sister, mother and a childhood friend with the intention of relocating to a Chicago residence deeded to them by an out-of-the-ordinary aunt. Sporting a rather grand notion of opening a finishing school for young ladies in order to generate some much needed income, Drusilla is surprised to learn that the property is in reality a grand castle-like structure filled with a menagerie of animals, barely any staff, a resident ghost, and a slew of ghastly rumors.

When a nearby neighbor, Mr Renick Wittenbecker, happens upon a rather curious situation involving large, angry birds, he becomes especially star-struck by the beautiful brunette with the bedazzling blue eyes and does the only thing that comes to mind, he fumbles out an ill-timed proposal of marriage. It just so happens that handsome, clumsy, tongue-tied architects are the least of Drusilla's worries, for apparently their property is highly desirable by competing factions in Chicago's notorious underworld, whom Renick contends would gladly send Drusilla to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

You can imagine how entertaining this entire tale turns out to be, based on how it begins and how you can only hope that it ends! Propriety indeed!

LESSON ONE: Stand in the way of the Windy City's criminal world and expect a most improper proposal from an eligible gentleman in return.

With her father dead, her fortune stolen, and her fiancé casting her aside, Miss Drusilla Merriweather's privileged life has been upended. She is left with only one option: to provide for her family by opening a finishing school in the allegedly haunted castle she's inherited from her eccentric aunt. However, her plan is immediately threatened by unscrupulous developers keen on claiming the coveted estate for themselves by any means necessary.

Mr. Rhenick Wittenbecker, a dashing architect with a tendency to charm his way out of trouble, is convinced he can protect Drusilla but is challenged by her fierce independence. Yet when strange occurrences--walking suits of armor and unexpected ghostly visitors--arise within the castle's grounds, Drusilla must decide whether to risk her family's safety and her school on the gallant architect who seems to have found his way into her heart.

Laugh-out-loud witty banter, swoon-worthy romance, and delightful mischief in the Gilded Age string together this entrancing series starter.
Fans of clean romance, Christian fiction, and strong female characters will enjoy this read.

TO LOVE A BEAST by Karen Witemeyer, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

(A Christian Western Historical Romance Fairy Tale Retelling of Beauty & the Beast)
Once Upon a Time in Texas Series #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Hope sees possibilities, where fear sees only barriers."

Arriving at the formidable gates outside Manticore Manor, book binder Callista Rosenfield may have entertained a second thought or two, but reality reminded her to be practical. Rosenfield's Bindery depended on fulfilling this lucrative contract, never mind that her grand entrance was greeted with a dog the size of a lion and its master a bear of a man whose disfigured countenance bore unimaginable pain. Everett Griffin did not want her in his domain, making Callista all the more determined to stay.

Callista's persistence paid off. And Everett Griffin turned out to be someone else entirely.

This tough but tender retelling of a tale as old as time showcases one of the sweetest happily-ever-afters that you will ever read.

Locals whisper of the beastly man who lives in the gloomy manor outside of town and his tendency to attack anyone who dares approach. Everett relishes his fearsome reputation and uses it as a shield to guard his privacy. Until a young woman as stubborn as she is beautiful infiltrates his sanctum and lays siege to his defenses.

When an injury to her father jeopardizes the family's book binding business, Callista Rosenfeld determines to fulfill the contract herself, and no insufferable client or woman-eating dog will deter her. Her employer transforms as well, his ill-tempered growls subsiding to reveal a considerate, intellectual nature. UNDERCOVER HEIRESS OF BROCKTON by Kelly Goshorn, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

ENDURING HOPE SERIES #2

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was an excellent historical novel. Not only did it give a close up view of a real disaster in Brockton, Massachusetts, but the author wove a captivating romance into the details.

Heiress Henrietta Maxwell is not content to sit back and enjoy her family’s new wealth. She has a philanthropic heart and raises funds for worthy causes, one of which is Fire Engine Company #1. She also has ambitions to be a newspaper reporter with her own byline. However society frowns on women in a man’s domain. So she adopts a pseudonym and disguises herself as a man and does it anyway. After falling out of a tree onto firefighter Leo Eriksson, her cover is blown. But an instant attraction is made.

“If she were bold enough to flirt with Leo, would he douse the fire with water-or accelerant? The better question was could she be brave enough to find out?”

When a boiler explodes at Grover Shoe Factory and collapses the building, Leo and crew lend a hand in rescue efforts. Etta is close by and helps during the chaos. It was fun to see just how the romance progressed.

The author did a good job of crafting complex characters in realistic situations with obstacles to overcome and calling on their faith in God to provide solutions to their problems.

A Socialite in Disguise Seeks Truth and Justice

Collect a new series of six historical romances. When life seems weighed down by challenges, there are always pillars of enduring hope and love to be discovered.

Henrietta “Etta” Maxwell, heiress to the Maxwell fortune, is a hard-hitting investigative reporter for The Enterprise Daily. The catch? Etta must pen her columns under the nom de plume, Henry Mason—a fact that routinely puts a knot in her knickerbockers.

Leo Eriksson is a second-generation firefighter with a passion for rendering aid to those in need. When Leo discovers that Henry Mason is really Henrietta Maxwell, the fire department’s wealthy benefactress, he agrees to keep her identity secret.

After a sudden blast rocks the Grover Shoe Factory, Leo and Etta team up to determine if the explosion is related to a series of suspicious fires in the area. But sparks fly when Leo accuses Etta of negating the human side of the disaster in her determination to get a good story.

When an unnamed source reveals Etta’s secret identity to a rival reporter, she falsely accuses Leo of being the informant. As the truth comes to light, Etta must persuade Leo to give her a second chance or lose the only man she’s ever loved.
