THE SECOND CHANCE TRAILER PARK By Katie Powner, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"A person must be fifty-four and a half or married to someone who is to apply to live in Peaceful Pines Trailer Park for Seasoned Adults . . . "

Meredith McGillicutty wasn't above fudging her age just a bit in light of the fact she was determined to retire and live a peaceful off the merry-go-round pace that had been her life for so many years . . . just not quite fifty-four and a half years. Putting her house on the market and ignoring her high end wardrobe for a comfier fit, she jumped at the chance to move into a trailer at the Peaceful Pines retirement community.

In spite of Meredith's expectations, her quirky neighbors were a colorful combination of settled (meaning never got out much) and over curious (gossip fodder) about their latest newcomer, who had moved into dear old Lois' trailer which came outfitted with the woman's cat (Meredith didn't even like cats!). As she settles in, Meredith begins to realize that it is quite possible that she isn't rediscovering herself, but hiding from who she really is, and it had taken a new set of old groupies to help her realize just that!

A delightful combination of social sass and meaningful conversations!

BackCover Blurb:
From award-winning author Katie Powner comes a funny, feel-good novel about a woman discovering her second chance at life.

This charming and heartfelt story is perfect for readers who loved Mrs. Quinn's Rise to Fame.

Fifty-two-year-old Meredith McGillicutty is not having a midlife crisis. She’s just ready for a change of pace, that’s all. The fact that she lied to get into a retirement community has nothing to do with being passed over for a promotion at work or her recent breakup with the only man she’s ever loved.

Nothing.

Meredith only wants some peace and quiet. To sit on a porch in elastic-waist pants and mingle with other mature individuals who value a life of serenity. But the residents of the Peaceful Pines retirement community have other plans for her. These quirky and endearing neighbors seem to know her better than she knows herself, and they decide Meredith’s life is only just beginning.

Blending humor and tenderness,
The Second Chance Trailer Park will appeal to fans of Fredrik Backman and Lenora Worth.

IN PURSUIT OF CIVILITY by Jen Turano, Reviewed by Paula and Winnie #ReleaseDay

Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies Book #2:
A Witty Gilded-Age Christian Historical Rom-Com Set in Chicago

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Jen Turano always tickles my funnybone with the antics of her characters whether they be human or animals.

In the case of In Pursuit of Civility, the heroine, Annalise has a boatload of trouble while in that pursuit. Annalise is serious about freeing animals from certain demise. Case in point: her aversion to fur and feather hunters or animals being mistreated in Fairs or Circuses. Hence, she has three attack ferrets, a pickpocket monkey and various other so-called pets.

Her role in The Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies is Decorum Instructor but she is doomed to failure when her charges run off.

Seth McCormick, whose sister Norma Jean, is one of the young ladies, is an inventor of very curious and sometimes hilarious items, such as skunk scent deterrent designed for the young ladies protection. You can imagine the chaos that is the result. What a unconventional romance with Annalise this turns out to be when a present that Annalise welcomes is a habitat for her bugs and spiders and a spider sack to put in it.

There is not a dull moment in this book with runaways, a missing aunt, and a treasure hunt, not to mention meddling mothers and young ladies alike.

I love Ms. Turano’s turn of phrase and the stream of consciousness dialogue. While this can be read as a stand alone, the first book sets up the series nicely and who would want to miss the first book with more mischief and mayhem.
*A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Bethany House on behalf of the author and via NetGalley. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone.*5 stars and a clean read with a slight faith content.

WINNIE'S REVIEW:

“. . . I have a feeling we’re kindred spirits as we’re both aware of the rules of civility yet only choose to embrace those rules when it suits us and when those rules don’t get in the way of our pursuits.”

When the main characters of a story are an inventor who invents strange things and a supposed decorum instructor who loses her teenage charges at a fair and also collects unusual animals and insects, you know the resulting tale is going to be a little chaotic, especially when the author is talented author Jen Turano. Turano is the queen of madcap, witty, humorous stories featuring hilarious characters that create mayhem wherever they go.

Eccentric inventor Seth McCormick and Annaliese Merriweather, the temporary head of the Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies, combine their efforts to keep Annaliese’s young charges safe, including Seth’s precocious and adventurous sister, Norma Jean, who leads them on some merry chases.

“I will admit, though, that I always thought decorum instructors maintained a stiff upper lip, along with sporting a prim and proper appearance at all times, but to point out the obvious, you’re a mess.”

With plenty of humor, mayhem, adventure, and romance, this tale kept me chuckling, snorting, and turning pages. It is the second in the series but can be read as a standalone book. I’m looking forward to the mysterious Seraphina Livingston’s story in the next book.

LESSON TWO: Become headmistress and expect to find yourself partnering with an attractive inventor to search for treasure.

Annaliese Merriweather has been appointed the temporary headmistress of the Merriweather Academy for Young Ladies while her sister is on her honeymoon, but she doesn't feel cut out for the role. Especially after she loses two of her most troublesome students during an outing to a county fair and has to recruit the help of Seth McCormick, an eccentric inventor, to retrieve them.

Soon after, one of those mischievous students disappears again, intent on pursuing a pirate map. Together, Annaliese and Seth set out to find her, accompanied by a menagerie of Annaliese's rescued animal companions. As they stumble from one chaotic situation to the next, sparks fly between Annaliese and Seth. A LESSON IN PROPRIETY by Jen Turano, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Merriweather Academy Series #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Is it just me, or do you think it's odd that animals were wandering around the castle?"

Following a failed engagement, loss of family fortune and foreclosure on their lavish New York home, Drusilla Merriweather packs up her sister, mother and a childhood friend with the intention of relocating to a Chicago residence deeded to them by an out-of-the-ordinary aunt. Sporting a rather grand notion of opening a finishing school for young ladies in order to generate some much needed income, Drusilla is surprised to learn that the property is in reality a grand castle-like structure filled with a menagerie of animals, barely any staff, a resident ghost, and a slew of ghastly rumors.

When a nearby neighbor, Mr Renick Wittenbecker, happens upon a rather curious situation involving large, angry birds, he becomes especially star-struck by the beautiful brunette with the bedazzling blue eyes and does the only thing that comes to mind, he fumbles out an ill-timed proposal of marriage. It just so happens that handsome, clumsy, tongue-tied architects are the least of Drusilla's worries, for apparently their property is highly desirable by competing factions in Chicago's notorious underworld, whom Renick contends would gladly send Drusilla to the bottom of Lake Michigan.

You can imagine how entertaining this entire tale turns out to be, based on how it begins and how you can only hope that it ends! Propriety indeed!

However, her plan is immediately threatened by unscrupulous developers keen on claiming the coveted estate for themselves by any means necessary.

Mr. Rhenick Wittenbecker, a dashing architect with a tendency to charm his way out of trouble, is convinced he can protect Drusilla but is challenged by her fierce independence. Yet when strange occurrences--walking suits of armor and unexpected ghostly visitors--arise within the castle's grounds, Drusilla must decide whether to risk her family's safety and her school on the gallant architect who seems to have found his way into her heart.

A FREDDIE AND GRACE MYSTERY
PAULA'S REVIEW:
A murder, an inheritance, a castle in Scotland and the legendary Loch Ness. Grace is in for more mystery in this engaging tale of searching for a will with lots of family drama included. “She adored the thrilling pursuit of finding answers. And there were a great many unanswered questions piling up right before her.”

Ms. Basham has crafted the ultimate sleuthing duo. I cannot get enough of adorable Grace and darling Freddy. As Grace says: “I love it when you talk sleuth.”

This time they venture to Virginia to find sister Lillias and her husband Tony and to visit their ancestral home. They are met with a crime freshly committed and a surprise inheritance for the sisters that needs to be quickly legalized. But of course complications arise and lives are in danger.

The author is a masterful storyteller and had me right there in the ancient castle, viewing the carved depictions of legendary Scottish folklore characters.

Along with the danger, the author does not forget the romance of a couple on their honeymoon nor the fact that they see everything through spiritual lenses. “If the world is shifting beneath our feet, dear Fredrick, then we must trust in the One who holds the whole world all the more.”

I just want this series to go on and on!

Contemporary Small Town Opposites Attract Romance about
a Flower Shop and Matchmaker

"We just need to give her time to get used to having the walking dead in her cooler."

Welcome back to the small, intimate lakeside community of Moonberry Lake, where the owner of the most beautiful flower shop in town has a "refrigerator full of elderly men"! You read that right, Delphinium Hayes is unintentionally participating in an attempt by the residents of the local senior care facility to escape what they perceive as ignored demands for better food and entertainment options. In all actuality, they are just a group of bored, senior men who want to play poker in their undershirts and Delphinium has the perfect space to do just that . . .

Delphinium . . . now how does one describe an exquisite young woman with a nose for sniffing out trouble . . . depending on your natural scent, of course . . . and a genius when it comes to arranging flowers and loving seniors? The fact is, just about everyone in Moonberry Lake adores Delphinium, with one exception (at the moment), a tangibly distressed director of the Moonberry Lake's Garden Assisted Living and Senior Care Facility, Mr. Elliot Sturgis, whose anxiety over all the safety rules and regulations being broken is topping the charts . . . but never fear, the lovely, disheveled floral designer extraordinaire tells him that he exudes the scent of . . . violets????

It's impossible to encapsulate all of the moving parts and heartfelt emotions that this story inspires. The characters are incredibly lovable and engaging, (when they aren't being stubborn) the struggles they experience are a universal reflection of life and love and loss . . . and thankfully . . . within a community that we all wish we could call our own, and the outcome? . . . expect to laugh and cry with both joy and sorrow as Delphinium learns to bloom!

MEETING HER MATCH by Jen Turano, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"Consummate ladies did not find themselves fearing for their lives often, if ever, but that certainly seemed to be what she was facing now."

Miss Camilla Pierpont and Mr. Owen Chesterfield had gotten off on the wrong foot (understatement of all understatements) . . . it was all a big misunderstanding of course when Camilla thought her knight in shining armor was nothing but a highwayman in disguise . . . except he rather looked the part as well, swathed in ill-fitting clothes and sporting a mighty big stature. To her chagrin, Owen turned out to be an extremely wealthy business magnate from West Virginia who had a little matchmaking opportunity in mind. Not with her of course, (of course!??) but rather Owen had traveled to New York in order to request her services for his hooligan of a sister. (who wasn't nearly as much trouble as her reputation)

It worked out rather well, really. Camilla needed to disappear from danger (the real highwaymen) and no one would ever expect her to flee to West Virginia, to a place where pigs walked (walked?) through yards of its mansions and giant cats became best friends with dogs . . . closely tied to meddlesome "meemaws" (cackle, cackle) who tried to sneak apple pie recipes under pillows and in pockets. What Camilla never expected and could hardly believe herself was . . .

So fun to read!!! So, so fun. The story's West Virginia setting gave the author ample room to expand her characters to act and react out of character, while moving the story forward at a charming pace, allowing Camilla to wave her magic matchmaking wand, setting Owen up for the surprise of his life . . . . he had somehow (in spite of Camilla's aversion to marriage) managed to meet his match . . . if they could only test out that kiss!

THE WOMEN OF WYNTON'S by Donna Mumma, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

A Classy 1950s Mystery
"She'd won a small battle on many fronts tonight. But a larger war still brewed."

Audrey Penault sort of understood why she might be misunderstood, but there wasn't time to dissect every employee's opinion of her at the moment, the very future of Wynton's Department Store depended on her ability to sniff out what was amiss, while at the same time developing a plan to set matters right. Poor Mr. Wynton was being duped and Audrey had a pretty good idea of who was to blame. The trouble was, she had to find allies . . . and fast . . . along with solid proof!

Enter Mary Jo Johnson (brand new employee, mother, already struggling to juggle home and work), Vivian Sheffield (the very classy bridal salon owner), and Gigi Woodard (a waitress at the store's cafeteria, works hard, wants to advance). Not exactly an army, but it was going to have to do. People were dropping like flies (dead flies to be exact), and who would be next?

What a charming setting! Especially for those who may have experienced the thrill of shopping multiple floors of an elegant department store, the story will bring back memories, and perhaps trigger a bit of nostalgia for the "good old days" when women cared more about fashion and fragrances. Besides being a bit of a slow starter, the characters took more time to develop than the plot suggests, but overall? This "whodunit" was a whole lot of fun to read!

IF THE BOOT FITS (Texas Ever After #2) by Karen Witemeyer, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

" . . . the man I marry must fit the boot I found the night of my ball."

After saving a life, only a boot is left behind . . . of course the fleeing trespasser could have been any sort of a man, but Samantha Dearing chooses to dream big dreams and make the mysterious cowboy into a hero who has just made one teensy, weensy mistake . . . her cattle baron father doesn't exactly share her assessment, but that was a conversation for another day. Her brother did not drown, nothing had been stolen, end of story . . . right?

Actually, the story has only just begun for Asher Ellis. To Asher's utter dismay his path keeps crossing with that of the lovely Samantha Dearing; however, thank the Lord above, she doesn't seem to recognize him. Spending a frequent amount of time with Samantha, Asher's sour opinion of her father begins to soften into a "maybe I was wrong about him" admittance. But still, something isn't quite right on the Three Cedars Ranch; Samantha is experiencing a fair number of "accidents" and Asher's protective instincts are beginning to hum with a few too many thoughts of calling her his "darling" . . . which in turn means the truth about that boot will most certainly have to come out.

Picking up a book by this author is always and forever an absolute delight! Only in Texas could a forsaken boot form the basis for such an entertaining fairy tale re-telling between two characters whose impromptu rendezvous at a party ends up in a pond . . . and boy howdy, enjoy reading how that turns out!

A LADY'S GUIDE TO MARVELS AND MISADVENTURES by Angela Bell, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #NewRelease

(A Whimsical Victorian Historical Romance from a Debut Author)

A little Victorian Steampunk, a little Jules Verne, a little Nutcracker makes this a fabulous book that blends quirky characters, acerbic wit, an interesting premise and Godly wisdom.

Clara feels responsible to look after her family. She has a hard time seeing that God is in control, not her. Her grandfather Drosselmeyer, is a clockmaker and inventor of marvelous contraptions. Theodore Kingsley, who has a hidden past, is taken on as an apprentice. He is mistrusted by Clara but they, along with her Mum, set out on a scavenger hunt to track down Grand and his flying owl, while fleeing a dastardly villain.
The descriptions of the places they visit make me feel like I was there. And throughout the journey Clara thaws toward Theodore.

Mum was a favorite character. She advocated for animals and their welfare and wore a live ermine named Fred as a stole.
The clues for the scavenger hunt were so well done and were connected to an intricate pocket watch. The message clues from Grand to Clara were full of godly wisdom and helped Clara to see that she didn’t have to live up to her nickname of Little Atlas with the weight of the world on her shoulders.
An exceptional and cleverly executed debut from an outstanding author.

TO SPARK A MATCH by Jen Turano, Reviewed by Rebecca, Winnie, and Paula! #ReleaseDay

(The Matchmakers Book #2):
(A Christian Historical Romance with Humor Set in New York's High-Society)

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"The odds were definitely not in her favor these days . . . Normally, unexpected visitors appearing on Duveen land wouldn't be a cause for concern, but considering she'd been forced to abandon her gown because it kept getting snagged on tree branches, impeding her rescue attempt of a stranded kitten, it was a disconcerting predicament to be sure."

To conclude that Miss Adelaide Duveen did not fit the mold of a top-tier socialite was more than obvious, there was a mountain of evidence. She had an enormous proclivity for escapades of momentous proportion, typically calling attention to herself in a most unladylike manner . . . but in a roundabout way, her numerous acts of mortification had drawn the regard of Mr. Gideon Abbott, who for the life of him couldn't figure out why he felt the need to rescue her all the time. Quite recently, the little scamp had convinced Gideon that he needed her assistance in a most delicate matter of removing an unconscious man from a party, thus staging another monstrous debacle that caused Gideon to feel indebted to her and . . .

. . . . the entire cycle began all over again . . . the difference being that this time Adelaide's antics had caused her interminable disassociation from polite society. Gideon needed help, and he knew just where to find it. Thus began the transformation of Miss Adelaide Duveen . . . it would be strictly business, no sparking involved.

"You're quite mistaken if you believe you're a lady who doesn't stand out in a crowd."

Filled with lengthy scenes (well, because Adelaide did go on and on about things), witty conversations (disguised as arguments), and an amusing assortment of catastrophes(there might be weapons and criminals and secret codes involved) this story spins its readers around and around and around again until they can certainly understand why Gideon cannot keep his head straight around Adelaide. Forget sparks, the two of them together? . . . there's enough combustion to ignite a blaze!
*I received a copy of this book from Baker Publishing through Interviews and Reviews. The opinions stated above are entirely my own.

PAULA'S REVIEW
“I have always believed God looks after us, and I think you can see that has certainly been the case with Adelaide, given the life threatening circumstances she finds herself in.”

I thoroughly enjoyed this hilarious story about Adelaide who is so accident prone that she is sure she will not marry, and Gideon who is always there to try to protect her - sometimes from herself. She uses her ability to create chaos to help Gideon out of a tight spot and in turn begs to be a part of his secret agency. The fun is never far away- look for the epic bustle blunder.

Matchmaker, Camilla Pierpont, is tasked with bringing Adelaide back into the good graces of the society elite after too many disastrous episodes render her out of vogue. Nefarious, shady characters and behind the scenes intrigue make for a book that so kept me in stitches that I did not want to put it down. The witty banter was the best!

If you want an absorbing story and a great laugh, do not miss this book.
*I received a complimentary copy of this book from Bethany House on behalf of the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are my own.*5 stars and an underlying faith thread.

WINNIE'S REVIEW:

“It wouldn’t be a normal evening for me if some manner of chaos didn’t occur.”

This quote pretty much sums up Adelaide’s life, as she tends to wreak havoc in her life with great regularity. Adelaide is definitely a unique and endearing character, and Gideon is a wonderful hero who helps Adelaide out of some of her most dangerous and crazy shenanigans. I loved the relationship and witty banter between these two main characters. Author Jen Turano is one of my favorite historical romance fiction writers, and one of the reasons is the witty humor and fun she pours into her stories. Another reason is the humorous way she pokes a little fun at high society in the Gilded Age.

As Adelaide’s friend Camilla and Gideon try to restore Adelaide’s reputation and standing in society, will they change her into someone she’s not meant to be? Adelaide isn’t sure she wants to change if it means she loses her compassion and concern for those less fortunate and less socially accepted.

“I’m relatively convinced one shouldn’t ignore God’s intentions or deviate from them simply to embrace the status quo.”

With plenty of chaos, action, a touch of mystery, and a good amount of sparks, To Spark a Match is a fun and humorous romp into Gilded Age society. Although it’s the second book in The Matchmakers series, it can easily be read alone. I’m looking forward to the next book in the series. I recommend this book to those who enjoy amusing and entertaining historical romance fiction.

On the one hand, Mackenzie needs the extra income to fund her mother's long-term care while on the other hand, Jeremy, who is fully supporting his niece and nephew, views the promotion according to his long-term plans) as a way to save money for the twins' college education. As Jeremy and Mackenzie progress in their efforts to demonstrate leadership and teamwork, they discover that working together may prove more beneficial than competing against one another . . . . though the process proves deliciously (don't be surprised if you get cravings for holiday fare) entertaining,  . . . "all is fair in love and Christmas".
An utterly delightful, witty, and inspiring story with the sort of romantic moments that one might expect from a story that practically oozes with "visions of sugar plums"  . . . dancing in the office?

" 'For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord,' . . . Had he organized his present and future so much that he hadn't allowed for God showing up with blessings?"

BackCover Blurb:
Two workplace rivals. One festive competition. And a romance that upends it all.

Every December two things are guaranteed for graphic designer Mackenzie Graham--Christmas celebrations and the annual promotion at her workplace. Those two things are by no means mutually exclusive. In fact, the better an employee is at harnessing the Christmas spirit, the more likely they'll win the new job. With her social anxiety, Mackenzie never thought she'd be a contender in her company's holiday competition, so how exactly has she found herself dueling her workplace crush with wrapping paper tubes and using tinsel as her weapon of choice for a much-needed raise?

Jeremy Fletcher's life is meticulously planned out, including how to win this year's promotion at work. Not only will the new position fulfill some of his career goals, but as a single guardian to his twin niece and nephew, he needs the salary increase to support his family. Jeremy has barely noticed Mackenzie Graham around the office, but now that she's his rival, he can't stop thinking about her. Her quirkiness intrigues him, and he's afraid that if he can't get his head on straight, the promotion isn't the only thing he'll end up losing to Mackenzie.

DEAR HENRY, LOVE EDITH by Becca Kinzer, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

"Look, if this old lady needs a place to crash for a few nights, fine. Just so long as she stays upstairs and out of my way."

Let the games begin! Edith Sherman is definitely not an "old lady", and "staying out of his way" turns out to be nearly impossible . . . they simply don't know that "each other" is "each other". Yet. Then things really get complicated. Back when things were confusing, but simpler, Henry Hobbes rather enjoyed getting those nice little notes (along with homemade banana bread) from his nocturnal house guest.

Turns out that living an ordinary life before her grand adventure began was harder than Edith thought it would be. Small towns tended to under-estimate and over-exaggerate, but no matter how much this little Illinois town tried to convince her to stay, Edith was going to go . . . to South Africa . . . and not even a pair of gorgeous blue eyes was going to stop her.

Oh, Edith! Couldn't true adventure be found a lot closer to home; for it ended up being relatively simple, and involved "sitting on his bench" . . . which of course, Henry had no idea what she was talking about (pretty common, actually) but what he did know, was how to finish what they started . . . . . Dear Edith . . . Love, Henry.

Full of hilarity, this romantic comedy skirts the borderlines of ridiculous, only to land squarely in the middle of a very fine story with a more than remarkable ending.

BackCover Blurb:
He thinks she’s an elderly widow. She’s convinced he’s a grumpy old man. Neither could be further from the truth.

After a short and difficult marriage, recently widowed Edith Sherman has learned her lesson. Forget love. Forget marriage. She plans to fill her thirties with adventure. As she awaits the final paperwork for a humanitarian trip to South Africa, she accepts a short-term nursing position in a small Midwestern town. The last thing she needs is a handsome local catching her eye. How inconvenient is that?

Henry Hobbes isn’t exactly thrilled to have Edith, who he assumes is an elderly widow, dumped on him as a houseguest for the summer. But he’d do almost anything for his niece, who is practically like a sister to him given how close they are in age. Especially since Edith will be working nights and Henry works most days. When he and Edith keep missing each other in person, they begin exchanging notes—short messages at first, then longer letters, sharing increasingly personal parts of their lives.

By the time Henry realizes his mistake—that Edith is actually the brown-eyed beauty he keeps bumping into around town—their hearts are so intertwined he hopes they never unravel. But with her departure date rapidly approaching, and Henry’s roots firmly planted at home, Edith must ultimately decide if the adventure of her dreams is the one right in front of her.

Reminiscent of the beloved classic
You’ve Got Mail comes a delightful new romantic comedy about mistaken identities, second chances, and finding love in unexpected places.
