HER DARKEST SECRET by Jessica R. Patch, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

'Here, kitty, kitty.' His voice echoed through the forest.

Special Agent Fiona Kelly's life at been upended as a teen. Having survived a close encounter with "The Nursery Rhyme Killer", Fiona had spent her entire career trying to solve the murders of her sister and countless others by someone whose obsession with Fiona had ultimately ruined her marriage. Now "Rhyme" was back, drawing Fiona to himself while bringing her face to face with her biggest regret; Asa "Bear" Kodiak.

Confusing even the most highly trained agents, Rhyme continues to kill and to taunt, acting as an "equalizer" in twisted vigilante sort of way, exposing the sins of others while conveniently ignoring his own. Although Asa has tried, and is trying, to move beyond his attachment to Fiona, her presence on the case has predictably shifted the professional balance of his team. Asa is remembering the good times and the bad times . . . all the time . . . but through a different lens . . . his relationship with a Savior, whose blood had been shed on his behalf. Surprisingly, Fiona says that she notices the difference, but how can it be enough, when Rhyme still stands between them?

Just in terms of a psychological thriller, this book could stand on its own two feet rather admirably. So many possibilities, so many plot twists, for both the innocent and the guilty have kept secrets. Add in a renewable love story and elements of a deep spiritual battle against seemingly impenetrable darkness . . . and the trilogy of plot, romance, and redemption adds up to quite a story! Not for the faint of heart mind you, some elements are borderline graphic in places and sickening in others; I chose to take a few reading breaks to avoid getting totally buried underneath the weight of the circumstances, but in the end . . . and it seems like it never will, but it does. . . justice prevails.

" . . . it turned out that hope wasn't out of reach for those who had the courage to reach for it. It was an anchor for the soul . . . . . she was going to learn to shine. Not like fireworks, but a star."
