BURIED WILDERNESS SECRETS by Jaime Jo Wright, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
The questions have all been put to rest: Jaime Jo Wright CAN write contemporary romantic suspense, and she does it brilliantly. I read way into the night to satisfy my curiosity of what Aaliyah and Wade were up against. Such a well plotted and executed story.

“They could choose to get lost in the wilderness of unknowns and secrets, or they could face the wild of them and see what happened.”

Wade and Aaliyah made a lopsided team with Wade on protection alert and Aaliyah trying to be independent. But the big question was- who was the Arrowhead Killer and why was Aaliyah in danger?

For a writer who claims not to like kissing books, Ms. Wright gave us all the great romantic vibes in this totally intriguing suspenseful book. I love the dual time gothics by this author and I can honestly say this Love Inspired book was equally as captivating.

Mysteries of Cobble Hill Farm Book 15

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I love these cozy mysteries set in England. Veterinarian Harriet inherited her grandfather’s practice in White Church Bay. She is marrying Pastor Will and they will go on their honeymoon to Scotland. But an heirloom brooch goes missing during the reception and that puts honeymoon plans on hold while they try to discover why it and other items went missing.

The contemporary story is interspersed with a tale of the original owners from the 1800s. That had a bit of intrigue too.

Lots of false starts when possible suspects are ruled out and a surprise when the real culprit is found.

I liked the community and family aspect of the story, down to a niece and nephew and their antics. Harriet and Will make a lovely couple and their faith was evident as they pray for the brooch to be found and in how they have a heart to serve their community.

MEMORY LANE by Becky Wade, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Trigger Warnings: recalling a rape, murder, adultery.
I enjoyed the premise of Jeremiah having amnesia after a near drowning by Remy, a recluse. It was very interesting. Then it took an unexpected twist when Jeremiah started to remember. A murder mystery commenced.

Remy was complex and hiding from her past. Jeremiah was dealing with unknowns about himself and his background and who he really wanted to be. Elderly Wendell as a side character was heartwarming. He gave Remy someone to care about outside her own situation. He was a voice of reason.

I appreciated that Jeremiah was unrelenting in his search for the truth as well as persistent in his pursuit of Remy. He was very patient.

I was really looking for more of a faith element to pop up, so I would consider this a clean read with some trigger situations.
*I borrowed this title from Prime Reading . All opinions are mine alone.* 4 stars and a clean read

BackCover Blurb:

After surviving a trauma several years back, Remy Reed relocated to a cottage on one of Maine’s most remote islands. She’s arranged her life just the way she wants it, spending her time working on her wood sculptures and soaking in the beauty of nature. It’s quiet and solitary—until the day she spots something bobbing in the ocean.

Her binoculars reveal the “something” to be a man, and he’s struggling to keep his head above water. She races out to save him and brings him into her home. He’s injured, which doesn’t detract from his handsomeness nor make him any easier to bear. He acts like a duke who’s misplaced his dukedom . . . expensive tastes, lazy charm, bossy ideas.

Remy would love nothing more than to return him to his people, but he has no recollection of his life prior to the moment she rescued him. Though she’s not interested in relationships other than the safe ones she’s already established, she begins to realize that he’s coming to depend on her.

Who is he? What happened that landed him in the Atlantic Ocean? And why is she drawn to him more and more as time goes by?

There’s no way to discover those answers except to walk beside him down memory lane.

Just A Guy With A Goal Book 1

A Strangers to Friends to Lovers,
Opposites Attract, Soccer RomCom

KIM'S REVIEW:
The Romcom Remake is my first Jen Atkinson book—and definitely not my last! I’m so glad I picked it up because I think I’ve found a new author. I really enjoyed the story, the writing style, and the characters.

At first, I wasn’t sure about Fran’s quirky romcom recreations—they felt a little over-the-top—but they quickly grew on me. Once I understood her reasons behind them, I was completely hooked. Fran is such a fun, spirited character who doesn’t let life bring her down. And Callum? What a great love interest! I loved his dynamic with his team, their camaraderie, and especially the chemistry between him and Fran. They’re fantastic together.

I’m crossing my fingers that Zev and Rosalie get the next story!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own. This is a clean read with one minor swear. She’s plotting a romcom. He’s playing without a game plan.

BackCover Blurb:
She’s plotting a romcom. He’s playing without a game plan.

But sometimes the best love stories are the ones that don’t follow the script.

Is it too much to ask for a romcom-level romance?
Fran Fairchild doesn’t think so.

After growing up in a loveless home, she is determined to script her own happily-ever-after.

True love is out there. It’s real. And Fran won’t be leaving without it.

But so far, her romcom remakes have been one epic fail after another.
Until one unexpected kiss from a handsome stranger saves her from public humiliation—

Callum Whitaker–professional soccer player and certified romance skeptic–didn’t plan to kiss Fran. Or to spiral into a six-month goal drought. Let’s just say the universe isn’t playing fair.

After a toxic relationship, Callum has decided that love isn’t part of his agenda… while scoring goals on the field is. Only the more he focuses on his game–the worse it gets.

Until Fran.
Yep, quirky, cute little Fran–who Callum is determined NOT to fall for–just might be his lucky charm. That kiss and her schemes are changing his game.

But Fran’s got more than luck on her side–she’s on a mission: Convince Callum that love is not the enemy. And somehow, it’s working. Bit by bit, he’s realizing he does need love in his life.

Or maybe he just needs Fran.

The RomCom Remake is a laugh-out-loud, closed door romcom. Expect swoony kisses, cackle-inducing moments, heart-thumping heroes, and one adorable, hopeless, romcom remaking heroine. And ZERO explicit scenes!

THE ATLAS OF UNTOLD STORIES by Sara Brunsvold, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Until the fear is quieted, the hope can't be heard."

A road trip. An adventure. An experiment of sorts, but to Chloe Vance it was a lifeline. Spending time with her mother and sister was important to her, asking them to step outside of their comfort zones? . . .  a huge step of faith . . . because even though they didn't know it yet, Chloe's upcoming plans included a gigantic leap. . . all the way to Prague, where her dream job awaits.

Plotting a map featuring a menagerie of literary sites scattered throughout several midwestern states, Chloe prays that God will write His story upon their hearts as the miles beneath Goldie's (yes, her car has a name, she's that kind of girl!) tires challenge each woman's patience and preconceived notions about who they are and what they can become . . . dare she hope for the kind of bond that never leaves anyone behind? At times, it looks doubtful (or even impossible).

This carefully crafted character driven story uses its backdrop of historical references to awe inspire the women within its chapters to reach beyond their expectations, their fears, and their disappointments; turning to the One who can be their "courage to be still . . . led out of the valley by a shepherd".

A literary journey beckons them . . . and may profoundly rewrite their stories.

Chloe Vance, dreamer of the family, needs to tell her pragmatic mom, Edie, that she has accepted a low-paying art instructor role at a Christian school in Prague. Her older sister, Lauren--the "responsible one"--is doing all she can to hide the fact she's been fired for a foolish mistake and is desperately seeking her next career move. Meanwhile, Edie, estranged from her own sister following their mother's recent death, is frankly in no mood for anything else to change.

The one thing they can all agree on? Life in books sure is easier to navigate than life in the real world. As the three women embark on a nine-day road trip to visit significant literary sites throughout America's heartland, they hope to find inspiration through the works and lives of literary greats. As they experience firsthand the adventure and wonder of the classics, they'll discover the value of being honest with themselves--and their family--about their losses and failures. Only then can they come to terms with their own needs and desires and find support from the most important women in their lives--each other.

Book clubs will relish this trek through America's classic literature as award-winning author Sara Brunsvold pens an inspirational novel of mother-daughter relationships, sisterhood, literary themes, a cross-country road trip, and books about books.

THE MEET-CUTE MANUSCRIPT by Kim Duffy, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Maybe it would be good to become plain Frankie Brown again . . .  And this time, I'll be staying in a castle instead of a dinky beet-scented apartment."

After a humiliating public break-up, wildly successful author Georgina Justice decided that running away from home might be a grand idea. Following the advice of her agent, Frankie jets off from New York to England to rediscover her muse within the walls of a crumbling Georgian Manor inhabited by a gregarious teen and her brooding viscount of a brother. Two more opposite souls could never be written into the chapters of one of Georgina Justice's books.

Or could they?

As clever and catchy as its title suggests, this clean contemporary romance delivers all the touch points that readers of romantic comedy have come to expect. While perhaps treading predictability, the story abounds in entertainment providing a plethora of pleasurable moments, hilarious hiccups, and intentional insights into the power of love. (after all, who can resist a lady with a closet full of shoes!!!)

BackCover Blurb:
A romance writer who no longer believes in love and a British lord who’s afraid of it—will they find their own happily ever after?

American Georgina Justice is a modern literary Midas—everything she writes turns to gold. But when a disastrous public breakup with New York’s most attractive heir leaves her unable to believe in or write about love, she’s sent to England to rediscover her inner romantic.

The last thing Georgina expects to find is Graham Michael Phips-Harington, Viscount Rosebury—a brooding, emotionally repressed engineer who spends his free time building trebuchets and trying to preserve his crumbling Georgian manor. At first glance, they couldn’t be more different. She’s a shoe-obsessed idealist with a flair for Regency etiquette; he’s a practical, old-money noble who would rather protect the past than relive it. And then there’s the Rosebury curse, which promises only heartache.

But fate (and Graham’s sister, Eleanor) seem to have other plans. And it’s writing a story neither one of them could have plotted on their own.

The Meet-Cute Manuscript is a low-spice, grumpy/sunshine romance full of swoony moments, British charm, and a nod to Regency novels. It’s the first in the Love on the Page Series, but each book can be read as a stand-alone.

NO STONE UNTURNED by Jenelle Hovde, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I have found a new favorite author of Regency romance.

Ms. Hovde delivered an engaging story with a grumpy hero and a determined heroine with a captivating mystery added. Captain Rafe Hawthorne is the new Viscount of Hawthorne Manor, an estate that is steeped in mystery and scandal. Bridget Littleton is a vicar’s daughter and quite the bluestocking with her fondness for the antiquities she found on a neighbors farm.

With flawed characters who grow in their faith, the plot thickened as Bridget sought recognition from two competing antiquities societies. And more complications arise as Rafe tries to improve his holdings and serve his tenants.

I was excited to read of the discovery of a Roman villa in the British countryside. This tale has a mix of historical significance, and the villainous quest to greedily obtain the artifacts. Vicar Littleton provides a voice of reason and spiritual guidance and he and other supporting characters add color to the story.

I enjoyed this story immensely and look forward to reading more from this author.

A natural disaster and a series of suspicious accidents threaten both their plans, along with the livelihood of the nearby villagers dependent on their success. Those ominous words prompted forensic artist Jo Cattrel to flee Michigan following her mother's untimely death, still convinced that the car accident which took Mira Cattrel's life was actually murder. Subsequently Jo reunites with a father she had never known and assumes a quiet life near Raymond Dodge in Hidden Bay, Washington . . . until . . . once again the cryptic words of a parent jolt Jo back into her past . . . or was it really someone else's past?

When a brazen attempt on Jo's life sends her crashing into the Puget Sound, her rescuer turns out to be none other than the one man who had shattered her heart, former Green Beret Cole Mercer. Dear God in heaven, what were the odds? Now working as a private investigator, Cole has been hired to find out what really happened to Mira Cattrel, by a woman trying to clear her brother from suspicion.

Tangled threads! Dizzying details! Second chances! And this is just the beginning!

With the finesse of a seasoned storyteller, the author takes before and afters to a new level leaving the characters befuddled and the reader absolutely fascinated. Jo and Cole seem to be constantly swimming against the tides until they remember that there is only One who can lead them beside still waters.

Set in a beautiful, rustic environment in Washington State, the bad guys do not let up. There are so many unanswered questions about family that Jo can hardly keep up. And the closer to the truth, the more danger. But that only helps them rely on God and further their tenuous relationship.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
" . . . she'd felt as if her life were a simple melody being played on a badly out-of-tune instrument."

Waiting month after month, year after year, Hedda Schlagel had finally stumbled across a photograph that offered a clue as to what may have happened to her fiance Fritz Meyer, who had ostensibly been sent to a German internment camp upon his arrival in New York, where he had died of typhoid if her source was correct. Determined to fit the remaining pieces of a somewhat murky puzzle together, Hedda travels to America to determine if it was "her Fritz" who was buried in a cemetery near Asheville, North Carolina.

Instead of finding answers, Hedda finds misunderstandings along with the remains of a woman's body in the casket marked to be that of Fritz Meyer. Working with local law enforcement to gain answers, Hedda uses her accomplished skills as a pianist to find a place to stay and earn money while she waits. Unfortunately, Hedda does not have the paperwork necessary for an extended stay, and the political unrest in Germany makes it even more dangerous to go home.

What an undertaking to suppose the years between two world wars by utilizing such an intriguing historical backdrop, while smartly including actual people and places along the way. Feeling the angst of each character, sharing their anxiety over every choice transforms this story into something deeply personal and memorable. There were a multitude of ways this story could have ended; happy ways, sad ways, hard ways, easy ways, right ways, wrong ways . . . but ultimately it finished in the best of ways . . . in the shadow of "these blue mountains".

THE COLLECTOR OF BURNED BOOKS by Roseanna M. White, Reviewed by Winnie, Paula, and Rebecca #ReleaseDay

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
“. . . the only way to ever truly defeat your enemies . . .was to make them your friends.”

Talented author Roseanna M. White has once again taken a little-known piece of history and built an intriguing and fascinating story around it. The Collector of Burned Books is the tale of exiled writers from Germany who founded a library in Paris of books that had been banned in Germany. When the Germans took over Paris, they also took over The Library of the Burned Books.

Professor Corinne Bastien had made use of the library for years but lost access of it and some secret books she had hidden there. German professor and booklover Christian Bauer was forced by German army officers to relocate France’s libraries, including The Library of the Burned Books. I liked Corinne’s courage, compassion, and willingness to stand for freedom to express ideas. Christian was also courageous and helped others the best he could under trying circumstances. I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow and change as they got to know each other.

“Was it better to speak up and be permanently silenced or to work silently, doing what good he could?”

Filled with intrigue, suspense, history, and a touch of romance, this book also had inspiration to give it depth and added meaning. I recommend this book to those who enjoy well-researched and well-written historical fiction.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy from Bethany House. All opinions are my own.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
An exceptional book that asks us to absorb the truth of censorship and its results through fictional characters as they
navigate the occupation of Paris in the years of World War II.

Based on a real library that was instituted by exiled German scholars, this story incorporated many interesting details that wove facts and fiction into high drama.

The characters were relatable, showing their love of God and country, often using subtle methods instead of outright confrontation.

I love that the story is about books and libraries. This book caused me to ponder why certain books were chosen to be banned. “Books did not burn. Books ignited. They lit the burning in others. Not with paper and match. With ideas.”

This book pulled at my emotions, not only for the plight of the oppressed and the injustice of the oppressors but for the romance that grew in spite of the secrecy that called for restraint. Felix, a child who was less than perfect according to some, became a bright light to those who could see beyond the outward appearance.

Important themes were hope in the face of impossible odds and that Jesus extends mercy to all who receive Him.

A thoroughly thought provoking book.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"You're keeping my secrets. The least I can do is hand you back your own."

Secrets. There were way too many of them in German occupied France; those pesky confidences seeped into every knock at the door, positioning friend against friend, neighbor against neighbor, even pitting the written word against self evident truths of the heart. This was the world in which university professor Corinne Bastien found herself, giving up free access to her beloved "The Library of Burned Books"; the entire building was suspect, and rightfully so, for the establishment held pages upon pages of banned books that garnered far too much attention. Adding insult to injury, the library had become the headquarters for the one person sent to relocate many of its tomes. Christian Bauer.

It's nearly impossible to reconstruct the various chess moves that this book represents, infused with its brave spirit and outspoken dialogue. The chapters seep with stimulating philisophical, theological, and social conundrums which serve to drive the characters forward in their quest to counteract deception and dogmatism. Delightfully tucked within a fight for their very lives is a sweet, sweet love story that is like a walk down the street on a starry night; never taken for granted.

Clearly an exceptional novel!

In this gripping World War II historical about the power of words, two people form an unlikely friendship amid the Nazi occupation in Paris and fight to preserve the truth that enemies of freedom long to destroy.

Paris, 1940. Ever since the Nazi Party began burning books, German writers exiled for their opinions or heritage have been taking up residence in Paris. There they opened a library meant to celebrate the freedom of ideas and gathered every book on the banned list . . . and even incognito versions of the forbidden books that were smuggled back into Germany.

For the last six years, Corinne Bastien has been reading those books and making that library a second home. But when the German army takes possession of Paris, she loses access to the library and all the secrets she’d hidden there. Secrets the Allies will need if they have any hope of liberating the city she calls home.

Christian Bauer may be German, but he never wanted anything to do with the Nazi Party—he is a professor, one who’s done his best to protect his family as well as the books that were a threat to Nazi ideals. But when Goebbels sends him to Paris to handle the “relocation” of France’s libraries, he’s forced into an army uniform and given a rank he doesn’t want. In Paris, he tries to protect whoever and whatever he can from the madness of the Party and preserve the ideas that Germans will need again when that madness is over, and maybe find a lost piece of his heart.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
After reading the debut by Ms. Carlisle, I just had to read this follow up and find out what happened to Allye. She saw something she was not supposed to and now someone is trying to scare her. But no one will believe her and she is starting to question herself. She is facing an undiagnosed health issue and does not want to burden her friends or family. Church friend Detective Eric Thornton tends to believe her when some things come to light and he strives to solve the mystery.

This is a well paced, intriguing story that kept me guessing. I read it in record time because I had to see how things would play out.

Lots of interesting twists and turns to ponder. Allye and Eric struggled with spiritual implications and practical ones, too, deciding to trust God completely, no matter what. They saw that God can use the worst of situations to help them grow. Eric was a great hero who was capable and showed a caring side when it came to foster kids. The romance was well crafted and respectful.

Murder--that's what photographer Allye Jessup knows she witnessed as she departed her studio one evening. Waking with bruises on her neck and a foggy memory, she believes she survived an attack, but everyone seems to think she simply sustained a head injury from falling down the stairs outside her studio. Plagued by an undiagnosed health condition, she is torn between the haunting reality of what she may have seen and the possibility that her mind is playing tricks on her.

Without proof the other victim ever existed, Detective Eric Thornton can hardly declare the area a murder scene. Still, he adds Allye's report to his already full caseload. But when new evidence surfaces to support her claims, Eric must stay one step ahead of a ruthless killer and uncover the truth before the suspect closes in on Allye again.

WHERE SECRETS LIE by Colleen Coble and Rick Acker, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Tupelo Grove Series #2

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"No one hunts down evidence better than you."

And right about now, attorney Hez Webster needs those evidence hunting skills to prove to his wife (technically ex-wife, but not for long) that the wine bottle in his trash can had been planted to throw suspicion his way, but to what end? He and Savannah had regained their footing, she was ready to marry him again (or so he hoped and prayed), and in fact her new appointment as the president of Tupelo Grove University should allow him to follow his dream of forming a law clinic there. Nevertheless, something was off kilter, Hez felt it in his gut, it would just take time to figure it out. Little did they know, the noose was drawing tighter with the passing of each and every day.

"I didn't see that coming". . . was my mantra throughout this entire narrative. Things both known and unknown fought fiercely for dominance; family history, criminal intent, international smugglers, duplicitous characters, overwhelming decisions, light vs. darkness . . . all playing a major role within this impressive display of romantic/legal/thriller/suspense, (yes, all of those! can you believe it?) giving me the distinct impression that the pages were turning themselves.

BackCover Blurb:
College professor Savannah Webster is ready to give her ex-husband, Hez, another chance, and she believes he's finally ready for them to face their many past trials as a team. But when Savannah finds evidence that points to Hez's old demons resurfacing, the fragile trust they've built begins to crumble. And it's not just their relationship that hanging in the balance--the survival of the university Savannah's family poured their lives into is also under threat.

Hez is determined to put his past mistakes behind him with his new role mentoring law students at Tupelo Grove University's legal clinic. His primary focus with the clinic is to help Savannah pull the university out of a pit of debt and bad decisions made by the previous leadership, including her father. But their quest for stability takes a dark turn as they try to root out the dangerous smuggling ring the university is entangled in, and their investigation puts them in the crosshairs of criminals who will stop at nothing to eliminate any obstacle in their path.

The twists continue until the final page as a dangerous world of smuggling and financial instability collides with the complex dynamics of legacy and family.

BEFORE THE NIGHT FALLS by Christy Barritt, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"There are some who carry darkness with them. It follows like shadows."

"And some who carry light, even when walking through darkness."

Darkness had penetrated the life of television personality Olivia Montgomery after being stalked and kidnapped two years prior. If not for her courageous escape, she would have been listed as a victim rather than a survivor. Thankfully the perpetrator had been killed by police, game over . . . or was it . . . the roses were back.

Taking a lengthy assignment to participate in fitness expert Tyson Stone's forty day regimen for overall health takes Olivia far away from the streets of New York to the rolling hills of North Carolina, and still! The roses continue . . . a reminder that the darkness of her past was trying to penetrate the light of her future, especially with mutual attraction between Olivia and Tyson raise the stakes substantially higher.

"No one should have to face something like this alone."

Roll out the caution tape, danger may be closer than you think!

The roses are back. And so is the fear.

TV personality Olivia Montgomery thought her nightmare was over.

One year ago, she escaped the clutches of “The Admirer,” a serial killer who left roses as his calling card. A serial killer who kept her in darkness. The monster who was shot and killed by police.

At least, that’s what everyone believes.

When a dozen red roses arrive at her door, Olivia’s hard-won peace shatters. Her nightmare can’t be happening again.

Fitness guru Tyson Stone never expected the spunky reporter assigned to his forty-day health program would bring danger to his doorstep. Now he’s determined to protect her, even as his own problems haunt him. But the closer the two grow, the more he realizes this isn’t just about saving her life—it’s about discovering what’s worth fighting for.

As the roses continue to appear and the killer’s deadline approaches, Olivia must decide whom she can trust. Because this time, she knows exactly what awaits when the night falls. This time, she might not survive her worst nightmare.

TRUE CRIME JUNKIES #10

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Each murder had been meticulously staged to mirror her photographs."

Just when Morgan Riley had gotten up enough nerve to demonstrate her true feelings for Logan, the stoic state trooper had responded with brutal honesty, revealing something about himself that had rocked Morgan to the core. Needing to distance herself emotionally . . .

Morgan had seemingly disappeared into thin air. Logan Gibson becomes deeply concerned, and rightfully so, for all signs point to an abduction. Thankfully his friends Andi Slade and Duke McAllister, both members of the Arctic Circle Murder Club (a popular true crime podcast), are willing to pour their resources into the case, because a sinister killer seems delighted to stay infuriatingly elusive, giving them a terrifying glimpse into the disturbed mind of someone who believes cruelty should be considered art!

These books continue to be some of my all-time favorites! The author's clean, crisp plotting skills are on full display in this tenth book of the series and having become comfortably familiar with the characters and knowing how well they work together, makes what could be a really dark story into something quite readable.

In Alaska, the cold isn't the only thing that kills . . .

Alaska State Trooper Logan Gibson has buried his past deeper than the winter snows of America’s Last Frontier. But exposure is imminent when his friend Morgan Riley goes missing and dangerous truths once shuttered by distant memories start to come into the light.

A methodical killer is stalking the Alaskan wilderness, taunting authorities with haunting images linked to Morgan’s award-winning photographs. When the Arctic Circle Murder Club gets a lead, Andi Slade and Duke McAllister are drawn into Logan’s investigation.

As they narrow the suspects, the danger intensifies. From treacherous mountain peaks to the merciless depths of frigid waters, Alaska’s stunning landscape seems to inspire a killer who is always one step ahead of them.

Logan and his friends must stop this madman before he
perfects his artistic vision. Otherwise, Logan may become the killer’s ultimate masterpiece.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
Well. Well. Well. Lighthouse Harbor was definitely not what it was supposed to be.
