Embedded deep into the world of powerful real estate moguls, independently contracted Cybil Langford is assigned to surveil one of the most ruthless crime bosses on the planet, Lorenzo Ramirez. And everything was going so well until she slipped into the toilet trying to retrieve what every spy wears, all black . . . and! . . . she comes face to face (in the dark) with her childhood nemesis-turned-crush, Ben Bradley, who is for some unknown reason calls himself Craig Miller, the name of her let's-forget-all-about-him-forever boyfriend. Ben is gong to ruin everything!

Cybil is going to ruin everything! F. B. I. Agent Ben Bradley is on the hunt to take down the criminal network responsible for the death of a federal agent. What he catches however, is the hem of a very lovely dress wrapped around a very lovely lady shooting darts out of her eyes as if she can tell Ben what to do without speaking a word. Actually, maybe she can.

What a fun story! The clever dialogue is superb and flies back and forth like tennis ball in a game where neither player knows the rules. Cybil and Ben have a past, and in spite of going years without seeing each other, this second chance rom-com with a heavy dose of crime-cute between two undercover agents, sizzles from beginning to end. In spite of getting a little lost at times with the details of the financial transactions, I loved the depth of emotions and hilarious antics that Ben and Cybil brought to the story. Readers who love humor infused suspense will be clamoring for more!

It all started with a party. Becca Gables, homeschooling mother of three and owner of a cozy combo of bookstore and bakery cafe, had been invited to cater a prestigious event at the home of one of Crystal Run, Wisconsin's elite townspeople. Known as the Paper Palace, the stately old mansion with historical roots was showing its age, much like its owner. But no one expected the rather unpopular matriarch, Phyllis Grant, to expire that very night. Something wasn't adding up, and Becca knew it.

Continuing to juggle motherhood as a young widow while managing her business through-out the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, Becca stays in touch with her Uncle John, a local police captain, about the case, which has become more and more suspicious. A delightful homespun story full of vivacious characters of all ages who sport equal doses of curiosity and charm while living their lives upon a confident foundation of faith. And yes, the who-dun-it component made the story all that more enjoyable!

CHRISTMAS HARBOR SECRETS by Ciara Knight, Reviewed by Paula #NewRelease

PAULA'S REVIEW:

This was very intriguing from page one. The writing style was crisp with no nonsense dialogue. The story was a slow romance of forced proximity. Rone is a hero who really does not want to be a hero because of a troubled past. Isobel is gutsy and determined. She has to find out what happened to her dad and will not back down. Trouble follows the pair as someone taunts them with threats. As they are pulled deeper into the mystery, they do not know who to trust. 
 

The writing was compelling as it evoked vivid pictures of the action. This is the first time I have read this author and the distinctive prose makes me want to read more. A great addition was the loyal dog Echo who once belonged to Isobel’s dad. But Echo chose people and was in protection mode when it came to Isobel. Echo and his actions were captured expertly. The danger felt realistic and complicated. The outcome was very compelling. Although there were scenes of danger, nothing was graphic. This was a clean read from a Christian World View without overt Christian preaching but a clear understanding of right and wrong.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I love these cozy mysteries set in England. Veterinarian Harriet inherited her grandfather’s practice in White Church Bay. She is marrying Pastor Will and they will go on their honeymoon to Scotland. But an heirloom brooch goes missing during the reception and that puts honeymoon plans on hold while they try to discover why it and other items went missing.

The contemporary story is interspersed with a tale of the original owners from the 1800s. That had a bit of intrigue too.

Lots of false starts when possible suspects are ruled out and a surprise when the real culprit is found.

I liked the community and family aspect of the story, down to a niece and nephew and their antics. Harriet and Will make a lovely couple and their faith was evident as they pray for the brooch to be found and in how they have a heart to serve their community.

Mason Daughtry's intentions for following his wife to France were entirely different than hers . . . ENTIRELY different. Only their second collaboration, Natalie, Brooke, and Everleigh had been contracted by an enigmatic employer, known only as Casper, to locate a rare manuscript; in fact, Lewis Carroll's handwritten and illustrated copy of the classic tome "Alice's Adventures Under Ground" was barely rumored to exist.

Natalie Daughtry's empty nest had been slowly turning into an empty life, she and her husband drifting dangerously apart. While Natalie was not sure this surprise appearance by Mason in France was going to be a help or a hindrance, she was almost sure that she was being shadowed by a man she had barely met. (cue protective husband!) Trying to fall in love again was going to take every bit of courage that she could muster, for that particular adventure was either coasting to a conclusion or waiting for a new chapter to begin.

What was I expecting when I began reading this book? An intriguing, mysterious, serpentine of a story. (check!) What caught me off guard in the best kind of way was how utterly romantic this book turned out to be. (I would even say swoony!) Do they find the rare manuscript? (that's for you to discover!) Did they re-write their own story? (read on!)

This is a continuation of Waterfall and is the best read after that book. 
 

The four friends, Anna and Laurie who own a B&B and Richard and Trevor who are psychologists, are hiking near a beautiful waterfall. Laurie is injured, and the other hikers go to summon help. While sitting by the falls, she sees something frightening in the water: a body of a woman with a flashy ring on her finger.
 

This was an absorbing, complex story that kept you trying to figure out who could have put the body there, who took the ring, and who was threatening which of the friends. What an exciting plot, and a surprise ending.
 

I enjoyed the portrayal of faith discussions between the four friends and the romance that progressed.
 

I am looking forward to more stories in this fictional Tennessee town.

Olive Sterling's present case as a professional investigator is riddled with half-truths and loose clues. Posing as the girlfriend of an affluent Wyoming rancher, Olive and her team go undercover to expose someone whose deception is equally efficient and deadly. The motive is a little murky; is it simply to ruin Reid Harrison's reputation or is there more going on than meets the eye, for apparently the common adage holds true; where there is smoke, there's fire. Olive is hoping that she doesn't get burned.

With twists, turns and a continuous flow of suspects, the steady pace of this story moves the reader closer and closer to the truth, which is a bit more complicated than one might imagine . . . except for the author!

When Captain Derek Dempsey arrives from the sheriff's department to clear the house, his review of local lore doesn't make Noelle feel any safer, but it does give her perspective. The story only gets curiouser and curiouser, and a lot more minacious . . . especially when she stumbles upon a small girl's (who calls herself Firefly) journal.

Such a good story on multiple levels! The word flow and chapter structure keeps the fast pace and raw edges flowing smoothly and effortlessly. The characters, while quite unique, are equally authentic. The setting, that appears so sinister in the beginning, mirrors life itself . . . redeemable.

Plus! Good luck figuring out what is really going on in the old Bechtel house.

Well, that didn't sound like someone who Noelle McKenzie wanted around her home or her daughter. Nevertheless, that was how Skyler had described the face that she had seen outside her window, and now Noelle had seen the same figure. What was it with people and masks . . . especially around Halloween. More disturbing was the fact that this particular apparition was reminiscent of the area's sole serial killer, the Dragonfly.

This story starts out with a thrilling scene and it just gets more troublesome and confusing. 

Richard, a school counselor who likes to climb up waterfalls, meets Annalisa when they come upon a boy on the roof of a car in a swollen, swirling creek. They save Hudson but then circumstances surrounding finding two bodies makes everything super complicated. As they work to piece the puzzle together, they become friends and that turns to romance.

Amid danger and lots of questions, Annalisa lives out her faith and Richard discovers faith and accepts Christ. They are sure God is working in their lives.

Fast-paced drama, reliable and interesting plot and a steady friend-to- more romantic thread makes this a fantastic story.

Favorite colors. They were exchanging pleasantries, but on a much deeper level than their words suggested. Inch by inch, paragraph by paragraph, Lia and Tane were sharing who they were, really were, since both of them were shrouded within a world that only saw who they portrayed themselves to be, underneath well honed stealth and disguise. It was a chance encounter that began their correspondence, and even now continued under a cloak of misunderstanding. . . borderline pretense . . . because Tane's occupation was so dangerous that bringing Lia's light anywhere near his darkness could get them both killed.
