THE CHRISTMAS COURIER by Roseanna M. White, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas #ReleaseDay

A WWII Historical Novella

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
“Sometimes it was only against a backdrop of darkness that human eyes could even see the light they needed to focus on. Sometimes it was in the hardest times that they could see the Lord most clearly too.”

One of the reasons historical fiction is my favorite genre is that I enjoy learning about little slices of history while reading an engrossing story. Roseanna M. White is a pro at using unusual and interesting historical settings, facts, and people to wrap her stories around. It was fascinating to learn of the traboules in Lyon, France—hidden, covered passageways that residents of the city would use to cut through buildings and stairwells to get from one street to another. They were used by the French Resistance in WWII and also by workers in the silk trade to keep the fabric clean and dry while transporting it

The Christmas Courier
features Resistance members Madeleine Perrin and Daniel Raymond, longtime friends who smuggle messages to the Resistance leaders. I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow and change amid the danger of their activities. They are realistic and engaging, and I was quickly swept up in their story.

White’s stories are always well-researched and intriguing, and this one is true to form. Elements of faith, courage, family ties, and forgiveness add depth to the tale. Although this is a novella, it feels complete, satisfying, and unrushed.

BackCover Blurb:
In World War II France, the future Madeleine Perrin and Daniel Raymond hope for is in grave peril when the Nazis imprison Daniel, a courier for the Resistance network. But a centuries-old law soon paves the way for a Christmas Eve wedding that becomes both a celebration and a daring rescue in this historical romance.

1943. Lyon, France. After bidding her students farewell for the holidays, Madeleine Perrin is looking forward to a quiet, simple Christmas at home with her mother. With the war raging on and rations tight, she knows it will be up to her to make the day festive and find special ways to remember the papa she lost and honor his love for Christmas. But first, Madeleine must smuggle secret messages hidden in her students' essays to the Resistance network. She never expects the person waiting to receive them is her childhood best friend, the man who broke her heart.

Daniel Raymond has thrown himself into his work as courier for the Resistance, carefully concealing his Jewish ancestry that, if discovered by the Nazis, could put his life at risk. Haunted by regret about the day Madeleine professed her love and he turned her away, Daniel longs to make things right. When he sees her again, he dares to hope for reconciliation―and realizes the love he once denied has only grown deeper.

As Christmas nears and Daniel recovers from a wound sustained in a courier run, forgiveness and romance soon blossom between Daniel and Madeleine and the two begin planning a future together. But when a mission goes wrong and Daniel is captured by the Gestapo, Madeleine must turn to her Resistance allies―and a centuries-old law―to attempt a dangerous rescue before it's too late.

-A standalone WWII historical Christmas novella inspired by true events
 -A low-spice second-chance holiday romance with a friends-to-lovers trope
-Compelling Christian fiction about brave spies and daring escapes for fans of Sarah Sundin, Kristen Harmel, Lynn Austin, and Sara Ackerman

Release Date: September 1, 2026

While all of London waits for snow, an orphanage in need holds holiday cheer, sparks of love, and secrets waiting to be discovered.

When Ebeneezer Scrooge’s former fiancĂ©e, Belle Beaumont, unexpectedly inherits a struggling London orphanage, she dreams of giving the children of Haven House the most splendid Christmas they’ve ever known. But her vision of snowflakes and merriment quickly collides with reality: Fire damage has rendered part of the building unsafe, and the paperwork is years behind.

Barrister Rafe Munro is fighting to clear an innocent man and searching for a child, who may be his relative. His pursuit leads him to Haven House, where Rafe offers to help Belle sort through the chaotic records that might lead to the missing child. Amid the mayhem of running an orphanage full of mischievous children and eccentric staff, will Belle and Rafe find love and the answers they seek this holiday season?

With characters from Dickens’s A Christmas Carol, this festive historical romance Christmas novella of family and second chances from Michelle Griep is set in Victorian England and perfect for fans of Julie Klassen and Mimi Matthews.

PAULA'S REVIEW

Lovely story that imagines what happened to Belle after she sent Ebenezer Scrooge packing. Told in a period perfect voice of Victorian England, Ms. Griep crafts a cozy Christmas tale that is full of boisterous orphans, unmanageable caretakers, and the unexpected inheritance of Haven House by Belle Beaumont. At first overwhelmed by the daunting task of taking charge of the orphanage, Belle forges ahead, wanting to give a memorable Christmas to her wards, hopefully a White Christmas.

Barrister Rafe Munro comes to Haven House in search of a relative but records cannot be found. Together Belle and Rafe try to make order out of the chaos left by the last administrator. In the process, Rafe loses his heart to not only Belle but to the children, especially a certain little boy.

There is much to love in this winsome tale. I was fond of seeing quotes at the head of each chapter from the original Christmas Carol. And the internal to do list that Belle kept adding to was fun. The characters’ faith shone through: “ I am coming to believe that maybe the Almighty didn’t place us here solely to set the world aright. Rather to love amidst the ruin. Even when it grieves us- or perhaps most when it does. For love may accomplish what justice, in all its forms, cannot.”

Fear not, Scrooge is not left out of the story; he has a part to play. Why not read the story and find out?

Why I Gave Scrooge’s Belle Her Own Christmas Carol

Guest post by Michelle Griep

I’ve always been suspicious of characters who appear just long enough to break your heart and then vanish without so much as a forwarding address. Belle from A Christmas Carol is one of those.

Scrooge, of course, gets the full treatment. Ghosts. Doom. Moral terror. A dramatic overnight transformation. Turkey delivery. The works. And yes, yes, it’s all very moving. But Belle? Come on. All she gets is one aching goodbye and then is shoved neatly into Scrooge’s past. So, excuse me, Mr. Dickens, but I have questions.

What became of the woman who loved Ebenezer before greed got to him? Did she regret walking away? Did Christmas ever sting? Did she build a fine, sensible life or did some little corner of her heart still ache for him or not? That wondering became Belle’s Christmas Carol.

In my story, Belle Beaumont unexpectedly inherits Haven House, a struggling London orphanage with fire damage, muddled ledgers, eccentric staff, and children who are more than rambunctious. Naturally, Belle decides she will set everything to rights and give the children the most splendid Christmas imaginable because—like me—apparently the woman has never heard of pacing herself.

Then along comes Rafe Munro, a handsome barrister searching for a missing child, and Belle’s tidy plans start to change. Oh, did I mention he’s single? That’s because I wanted Belle to be more than Scrooge’s lost love. I wanted her to have grit, flaws, hope, purpose, and a future all her own.

Because sometimes the story doesn’t end with goodbye. Sometimes that’s where the real story begins.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
A very well written complication of romantic suspense Christmas themed novellas!

"I didn't know who else to call." - Do You See What I See? by Sarah Hamaker

Alone with her foster sister's two young children, Oakleigh Wright calls the only person she knows who might come to her rescue in the middle of the night at a random truck stop. . . except . . . Joseph Talbot used to be the love of her life . . . seven years ago. When Joseph does indeed answer the call, Oakleigh has no choice but to omit some pertinent details regarding her predicament. In the end, it doesn't matter, members of a dangerous gang are following their every move. Will Oakleigh and Joseph witness a Christmas miracle? . . . pray it is so.

This little story started playing tunes on my heartstrings right away, with its cuddly kids and tender, romantic reunion!

"Now her fancy toenails had nothing to look forward to except encasement in her Christmas socks." - Do You Hear What I Hear? by Jayna Breigh

After her long awaited Christmas vacation is abruptly cancelled by an unforeseen legal deadline, trial lawyer Elise Sinclair resigns herself to a lonely holiday buried in case files. Imagine her surprise when her roommate's brother (who also happens to be her own personal heart-breaker) shows up downstairs on the couch the next morning. Please say it isn't so! Wasn't Jack Grant supposed to be in Australia!

Between her sneaky grandmother and Jack's genuine remorse, Elise's lethargic holiday spirit has nowhere to go but up! But first things first, she has a case to solve!

The sweetest of second chance stories with a dollup of Christmas grace!

"Transplanting her life to Alaska and running a popular food truck had been born out of grief and betrayal, but it brought her joy." - Do You Know What I Know? by Kimberly Woodhouse

When a highly publicized and televised cooking competition went terribly wrong, Faith Thibodeaux took the necessary time to heal from her injuries before moving all the way from Louisiana to Alaska with her famed gumbo recipe and begins running a highly successful food truck business. Shocked to see the face of her former boyfriend in the customer line, once again a camera happens to catch the incident. What were the chances that Gabe Rougeau has changed as much as he claims?

A Historical Holiday Romance Novella with Themes of
A Christmas Carol set in Regency-Era England

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Dearest Isabelle. . . It is my desire to leave to you Haven House, for there is no one who loves the children more fervently. Please consider."

When the director of Haven House, a London orphanage, is killed in an unfortunate accident Belle Beaumont is handed the keys. With its menagerie of mismatched employees, looming repairs, disorganized paperwork and rambunctious children, Belle is understandably second guessing her decision within twenty four hours.

Barrister Rafe Munro stumbles upon a family matter which leads him to the front door of Haven House. The lovely orphanage director appears a tad overwhelmed, and Rafe finds himself putting aside his demanding work schedule for at least an hour a day to assist Belle, when one thing leads to another and then to quite another.

Expertly imagined, this is undoubtedly one of the sweetest Christmas stories that I have ever read! "God bless us everyone"! (and let it snow!)

TWELVE DAYS AND TWELFTH NIGHT by Sarah Sundin, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

A Historical World War II Holiday Novella with a Hollywood Celebrity,
Opposites Attract, and Second Chance Romance

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This story, which is set in San Diego, California in 1943, sees a scarred hero looking for a new purpose in life and an enthusiastic heroine trying to prove herself when up against constraints. Maggie Oliver and Prescott Duke have things in common: their faith, their love of country and their drive to entertain deserving soldiers and sailors with a unique USO show.

Ms. Sundin uses humor to lighten the story, yet there is meat to chew on as Prescott faces his limitations and Maggie yearns to make a difference.

Disappointment threatens on many levels but the duo persevere. Their love story is inspiring as they overcome misunderstandings and learn humility and forgiveness. And learn wisdom from Grandpa Bill Curtis who warns Maggie not to meddle.

The perfect story to read at Christmas with a blending of a favorite Christmas Carol and Shakespeare.

Do You See What I See by Sarah Hamaker:
First time reading this author and she does a great job of putting suspense into a surprise encounter, weaving a faith thread of forgiveness and going beyond for a friend. Oakleigh has a love that shows obedience to the Golden Rule.

Do You Hear What I Hear by Jayna Breigh:
It is always fun to read a Jayna Brieigh story. She really conveys what is in a character’s head. Second chance with Jack is possible but only with forgiveness and compassion. It helps that Elise and Jack are searching for answers together. Legalese is understandable and enjoyable.

ABOUT LAST CHRISTMAS by Rachel Scott McDaniel, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

A Sweet Holiday Romantic Comedy

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"I'll be by the bench near the turtledoves display with two hot chocolates on December fifteenth. Say around seven."

So her impaled-by-an-elf (definitely an inside joke! that happened outside!) handsome stranger named Leo didn't show up as promised, no big deal, right? Wrong. Was Greta Carlton disappointed? Absolutely. Did she put the incident behind her? Mostly. Nearly a year passes by, a year that is saturated with grief over the death of her beloved grandmother and taunted by the bizarre reappearance of her mother.

As the Christmas season approaches, Greta tries to ignore the fact that being the proprietor of a lovely antique shop in a small town that practically oozes with holiday cheer is not putting her in the spirit of the season. Until, Remington Orileo Mathis pops up out of thin air at a charity ball looking way too handsome for his own good in an expensive tuxedo.

This now-you-see-him, now-you-don't romantic comedy delivers every single sigh-worthy emotion imaginable as Greta and Leo finangle turning a chance encounter into the love of a lifetime. Is it easy? Are you kidding me? Is it worth it? Now there is an excuse to read a book if I ever heard one.

Charming, Christmassy, and classically entertaining!

She’s trying to avoid a holiday disaster. He’s trying to earn his way off her naughty list. Both will need a Christmas miracle.

Greta Carlton is beautifully content running her antique shop in the snow-globe town of Silver Creek, sipping vanilla gingerbread lattes, and staying clear of drama. But a whirlwind encounter with a handsome stranger leads to a whimsical evening, stirring her heart to believe in movie-style romance. That is, until Leo disappears into thin (and snowy) air. Ten months later, he walks into her shop like the Ghost of Christmas Last, needing a favor.

She’s still mad.

He’s still charming.

Greta doesn’t have time for men with dimpled grins and the proclivity for vanishing. She’s got her own holiday project with an approaching deadline. Though the more she learns about Leo, the more she realizes he’s the only thing standing between her and a Christmas catastrophe. They agree to help each other reach their holiday goals. As they untangle feelings as stubborn as knotted Christmas lights, Greta wonders if second chances are like antiques—unexpected, imperfect, and everything you didn’t know you were looking for.

About Last Christmas is a sweet holiday romance wrapped in witty banter, heartfelt twists, and the dreamy thrill of finding love in the glow of twinkling lights.

THE CHRISTMAS RING by Karen Kingsbury, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

A Holiday Romance

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This poignant story had some of my favorite elements. Antiques have always been a part of my world since my mother was an antique dealer. “Antiques had a way of stirring Ben’s heart, taking him to places of poetry in his soul. Antiques let you hold a piece of history in your hand.”

I love second chance romance and this was just the ticket. It was a story of love, loss and moving on mixed with the quest of a lost ring which was an heirloom that Vanessa wanted to pass on to her daughter Sadie. The way Vanessa and Ben met seemed orchestrated by God. I appreciated the way the author depicted them as solid Christians who made mistakes but could overcome them with the help of God. I also appreciated the honor given to fallen military personnel and the way Vanessa found a way to serve the families of those lost in service to their country.

The story garnered a few tears and had me thinking of the meaning of true, sacrificial love. I am so glad it is being made into a movie for release this year. Truly a Christmas gift.

UNDER THE MISTLETOE by Tari Faris, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Going back to Heritage at Christmas was a real treat. The story was filled with holiday events that were special to Devin Hendrixson as she planned them for the families that were fostering children in town. The past comes back to haunt her when secret author Logan Kingsley returns to town. Logan likes Devin and Devin likes Logan but each is afraid to let the other one know. Talk about awkward!

Secrets, misunderstandings and insecurities make for a rocky relationship. Both Devin and Logan need to trust God more and do grow in their faith.

I loved the heart Devin has for foster kids and her creativity in providing Christmas projects for them. In the process, she learns to accept help and not try to do everything herself. Logan was smart but confused and very romantic when he gifted Devin with a charm bracelet with significant charms.

A unique slant was the story within a story-a very good serial novella that Logan wrote to appease his editor. This shows that Ms. Faris is adept at various genres.

I always enjoy the family feel of Heritage and how everyone pulls together to make things happen for the good of the community. I am sorry that this is the last book.

FULFILLING HER CHRISTMAS WISH by Liwen Y. Ho, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt #ReleaseDay

A SMALL TOWN CHRISTMAS ROMANCE from the
CHRISTMAS IN REDEMPTION RIDGE SERIES

TRIXI'S REVIEW:

"For those who believe that love is possible at any age." ~Liwen Ho

Okay, this story has SO much going for it:

1. It’s love found after the loss of a spouse

2. It’s a friends-to-more (though formed over the span of MANY years)

3. It’s later in life love (both Lottie and Trevor are in their 70’s)

Those reasons alone sparked my interest in the story. Unusual circumstances or unique characters always make me want to read the book, and this delivered a thousand-fold! Anything, and I do mean anything, written by the pen of Liwen Ho is an automatic must-read… I don’t care what troupe or genre it is. I know it’s going to be enjoyable, entertaining, full of characters to care about and a natural faith thread throughout.

I think the reason why my favorite trope in a book is friends-to-more is because my husband and I were the same. We created a strong (mostly long-distance) friendship that formed a steadfast foundation for a love discovered. So, I can understand Lottie’s need to not ruin her friendship with Trevor by confessing she’s loved him for years. He was absolutely clueless! Until she decided she was done waiting to travel the world, then he realized how much of his life was wrapped around Lottie an how much she would be missed once she was gone. It made him realize that over many years, his heart had turned to love after all! But convincing her would be the challenge—one he’s willing to accept!

Everything about this story was good and I enjoyed seeing Trevor and Lottie discover their feelings for one another deepened with a life-long friendship. Sweetly satisfying all around, and I just think these two were so cute together! If you like sweet love stories full of heart, laughter, characters that are like friends, faith and that happily-ever-after you’re looking for, then I highly recommend this book to you!

A VERY ENGLISH CHRISTMAS by Turansky, Johnson, and Gray. Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

Three Literary-Inspired Novellas

PAULA'S REVIEW:
A Very English Christmas by Carrie Turansky, Carol Lehr Johnson and Margurite Martin Gray is just the book to read this holiday season.

An antique shop ties the three stories together by highlighting three items and thus three notable authors: Jane Austen, Charles Dickens and Beatrix Potter.

These modern day authors crafted sweet romances of fictional people who had a connection to the famous authors. And there is a hint of another romance about to bloom in the contemporary tie in.

The authors each captured the flavor of Austen, Dickens and Potter in their segments, giving each one a friend who brought out exceptional qualities. The stories conveyed a true message of faith in a natural way.

It was hard to choose a favorite story because they all felt so cozy and true to life. A Very English Christmas was a real joy to read.

Celebrate the season with three timeless tales inspired by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Beatrix Potter.

When Emma Grace Langley retreats to her grandmother’s antique shop in the snowy Cotswolds after heartbreak and job loss, she hopes to find clarity. Instead, she finds a collection of heirlooms—a portrait, a rare book, and a charming figurine—that unlock stories from the past. As each tale unfolds, Emma is drawn into the lives of three remarkable women whose lives were touched by England’s greatest storytellers.

In A Portrait of Faith, devoted daughter Violet Walford longs for a life beyond duty to her family. When she is asked to paint a portrait of lively Regency-era author Jane Austen, their unexpected friendship inspires Violet to pursue life and love with new courage.

In A Victorian Christmas Tale, Clara Reynolds struggles against physical challenges and family expectations while falling in love with John, a writer with ties to Charles Dickens. Their work at the London Foundling Hospital brings healing, hope, and a Christmas transformation that would make Scrooge proud.

And in A Tale of the Season, Edwardian heiress Arabella Graham escapes to the Lake District and meets a charming country veterinarian—as well as artist and children's author Beatrix Potter. With gentle wisdom and the peace of a country Christmas, Arabella discovers the joy of finding her own path.

Blending romance, inspiration, and literary nostalgia, A Very English Christmas is the perfect holiday escape for fans of historical fiction and classic English authors.

A CAROL FOR MRS. DICKENS by Rebecca Connolly, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

PAULA'S REVIEW:
A Carol for Mrs. Dickens by Rebecca Connolly is set in London 1851 at a house party hosted by Charles Dickens.

In all the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations and her husband’s enthusiasm for the holiday, Kate Dickens has lost her zeal for the sacred time of year. In the midst of a Christmas party, Kate is taken on a memory journey much like Scrooge in A Christmas Carol. Instead of ghosts, Kate is transported by her recollections to times around Christmases past that cause her to ponder the real reason for Christmas: the birth of the Savior. Her contemplations on the past create a new appreciation for the spirit of Christmas and re-awaken her giving heart. “Christmas felt most like Christmas when she was with family.”

I liked the addition of Victorian Christmas Traditions and History at the end.

This story is just right for the holiday season and spells out the true faith of Christmas.

Catherine Dickens, wife of Charles Dickens, experiences her own Christmas Eve transformation as she magically travels through her cherished memories to rediscover her lost love of Christmas.

By 1851, all of London has fallen in love with A Christmas Carol, heralding Charles Dickens as “the man who invented Christmas.” But for his wife, Catherine, Christmas is less of a reason for celebration and more of a burden. Between hosting lavish parties, decorating her home, and caring for her eight children—with one more on the way—she feels more like Scrooge than herself this year.

But everything changes after a chance encounter with a kitchen cook, who reminds her that Christmas can be a time of miracles and magic, if she is willing to open her heart.

Armed with a magical sprig of holly, Kate embarks on three transformative journeys into her past, hoping to reconnect with the love she once felt for the holiday—and with herself. But can these memories be enough to reignite her Christmas spirit? Or are such miraculous transformations only meant for the characters in her husband’s beloved tales?

Inspired by real individuals, A Carol for Mrs. Dickens reminds us that the true spirit of the holiday lies in love, faith, and the joy of giving.

Catherine Dickens struggles with the burdens of Christmas despite her husband’s success with A Christmas Carol. A magical sprig of holly leads her on three journeys into her past, rekindling her faith and holiday spirit. This heartwarming tale celebrates love, faith, and the simple joys of Christmas.
