THE HEIR'S BELOVED by Rhonda Dragomir, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:

A Ravenwood heir in disguise, a damsel in distress, combined with a dastardly villain. What more could you want in a tale told in merry olde England in 1587?

Knight Liam Kerr has come to claim his rightful place as Duke from a usurper but must do it in stealth. To complicate matters, Ella has agreed to marry evil Fenwick in order to escape her aunt and uncle and ensure the care of several orphan children who have her heart.

The author has captured history and made it come alive. There is danger, romance and a bit of wit and whimsy thanks to Betha, mum to Liam since she rescued him as a babe.

Ms Dragomir teaches faith lessons in the person of Father Timothy. Liam and Ella seek justice and mature spiritually through difficult circumstances. Romance is hard-won.
Trigger warnings. The book does contain attempted assaults on women, sword fights but not too graphic. This is Elizabethan England after all.

BackCover Blurb:
For twenty years, the wrong man has ruled Ravenwood. Now its rightful heir has come home.

Spirited across the English border as a child, Liam believes he is a true son of Scotland. But his birthright tells a different story. He is the Duke of Ravenwood, whose father’s steward murdered Liam’s family and stole his inheritance.

Now Liam has returned to England in disguise, determined to reclaim Ravenwood and avenge his family.

Ella is devoted to rescuing a ragged band of orphaned children. Believing their future is worth more than her own, she agrees to a marriage of convenience with the steward despite his vile reputation. If they wed, the steward’s hold on Ravenwood could become unbreakable.

Liam cannot reclaim his inheritance without confronting the man who destroyed his family. But rescuing Ella may cost him everything he came home to recover.

Only when Liam and Ella surrender their futures to God can He mend wounds that neither revenge nor sacrifice can heal.

Will rescuing Ella cost Liam the inheritance he vowed to reclaim—or will God redeem far more than Ravenwood?

WHEN WINTER CAME TO DUNN COTTAGE by Joanna Davidson Politano, Reviewed by Paula and Winnie #ReleaseDay

A Victorian Christmas Historical Mystery Set on the Cornish Coast

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I am always excited to dive into a Joanna Politano novel. This one is a novella but it is packed with allegory and is just sumptuous in its descriptions.

A theme that is evident throughout is: you should not just look on outward appearances but “lift your eyes”, hinting that if we see with the eyes of God that we see things differently.

One of my favorite authors is Charles Dickens and main character Rosalyn Snow loves him too. She emphasizes with the poor and needy and sees a connection to those who are generous and kind towards them. My favorite novel by Dickers is A Tale of Two Cities. I recognized a similarity to this story of sacrifice for others and of course to the sacrifice of Christ Himself.

Beautifully written, this story has romance, a noble but not titled hero in Simon Belfour and characters who have hidden motives. The atmospheric writing was mesmerizing in the cliff cottage, the mansion and during danger when calamity strikes.

If you love Amanda Dykes, this story will be sure to captivate you.
*A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the author. I was not required to post a favorable review. All opinions are mine alone. *5+ stars and a underlying faith thread

WINNIE'S REVIEW:

"It's so easy to think that what's at eye level is all there is, because it consumes our vision. We cannot see past it. Or we don't allow ourselves to."

When Rosalyn Snow encounters a man wearing her missing father's coat and fleeing the police, she decides to bring him to her home for Christmas and attempt to find out what he knows about her father. Simon Balfour is elusive and has secrets, but does he know where her father is? What is this man hiding?

It was a delight to return to Dunn Cottage on the cliffside in Cornwall. I was drawn to the beautiful, enticing cover and the premise of a hidden cottage with a rich family heritage. Joanna Davidson Politano's stories are always very creative and filled with unexpected twists and turns. They're also a little magical, whimsical, and mysterious with deep, engaging characters and most often have very surprising endings. This story is no different, and though it is a novella, there is a lot packed into it, and it feels complete and satisfying. I especially enjoyed the thread of charity and service to others that ran through the tale.

I'm looking forward to more stories about Dunn Cottage from this author. She is definitely one of my favorite authors. Her books are such a treat.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy. All opinions are my own.

BackCover Blurb:
A stranger is wearing her missing father's coat.
And he isn't saying why…

The last place Rosalyn Snow expects to find her father's coat is beneath Exeter's old Exe Bridge.

Especially not on the back of a man fleeing the police.

Convinced the stranger holds the truth she’s spent years searching for, Rosalyn brings him home for Christmas. But Simon avoids giving answers, and what little he reveals only deepens the mystery.

As Dunn House fills with glittering guests, whispered ambitions, and holiday celebration, Simon moves through society as though he belongs there... yet he’s just as at home among the vagrants on the docks. And when Simon’s carefully guarded past reaches Dunn House during the Twelfth Night celebration, the fragile peace of the estate begins to unravel.

What has become of her father?
And who is the man wearing his coat?

Bringing Simon Balfour home might unravel Christmas.
Discovering who he is will make it unforgettable.

The House on the Edge of the Cliff series tells interconnected stories across generations, where one house on the Cornish coast holds secrets that echo through time.

DESIRE OF MY HEART and WITH ALL MY HEART by Heidi Gray McGill, Reviewed by Rebecca

 Shumard Oak Bend Novels
(Discerning God’s Best Book 1 and 2)

REBECCA'S REVIEWS:

DESIRE OF MY HEART
"Tomorrow, we will begin the process of selecting a husband for you now that you are nearing womanhood."

Horrified that the director of the orphanage where Rachel and her brother Charlie had spent most of their life was about to bid out her future, she makes a courageous decision, to marry a grieving widower and take care of his two children. It was the only way that Rachel could think of to make sure that she and Charlie could be able to stay together. And so, slipping off in the dead of night, Rachel and Charlie become Trexlers.

With a roof over her head, a kind husband, and a household to manage, Rachel's life begins to fall into a pleasant routine before unexpected circumstances make it clear that God has a few more chapters to write into her story; many of which will be challenging, some of which will be painful.

This emotional family saga, with its amazing array of characters from so many corners of Rachel's life, is a wellspring of applied spiritual truths resulting in a sure hope and blessed assurance that God does indeed give us the desires of His heart!

WITH ALL MY HEART
When Pete Manning happens upon Singing Bird's dog Honi, hurt and alone, he fears the worst. After giving the loyal animal rest and sustenance, he depends on Honi to lead him straight to Singing Bird and her son Little Sun, who desperately need his help. On the one hand, Pete is relieved to lay eyes on the one woman who he has been unable to forget, but on the other hand, her life is hanging in the balance until Pete can send for reinforcements.

Ironically, Pete's solitary life had very recently been interrupted by the sudden appearance of another woman; his niece. Tired of city life and endless expectations, Lizzy had decided to escape into the wide open spaces of rural Missouri where she could demonstrate her skills as an experienced horsewoman. It didn't take long before she caught the eye of one of Pete's neighbors, Charlie Trexler, who has plans of his own, or so he thinks. God is obviously taking Pete's resolve to wait on the Lord to strengthen his heart to an entirely new level.

After reading the first book in this series, I was highly motivated to read the second; Pete and Singing Bird's story was guaranteed to be special . . . and it was . . . and it was so much more! Reuniting with familiar characters while they courageously struggled and vigorously rejoiced was both a blessing and an encouragement! The story also introduces readers to new members of the Shumard Oak Bend community, ensuring there will be even more stories just waiting to be told!

*I purchased these books and was under no obligation to provide a positive review.

A 1930s Historical Romantic Mystery (Di Stasio Giornaliste Agency Book 3)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
It was fun being a fly on the wall and experiencing the Olympic Trials at Lake Placid, New York in 1939.

Emma is a sports journalist with the Di Stasio Giornaliste Agency going to cover the trials for the Winter Olympics. She fortuitously is billeted in the house of two Olympic hopefuls.

What fascinated me was the history of these particular games. Only two events were open to women athletes. But they were preparing to extend more of the events to include women. In addition, Franklin Roosevelt, who was governor at the time, was slated to start his campaign for the Presidency. It was a pivotal time in history considering the threat of war and the stigma that Jewish athletes faced.

An absorbing story that saw Emma grow in her faith and also find things in common with Ryan Callahan, a speed skater and runner vying for a place on the Olympic team. With danger hovering, romance blooming and faith sustaining, this is another chapter in the Di Stasio Agency series that is sure to please historical fiction readers.

MURDERS IN THE MARQUEE by Dana Mentink, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise

(Murder Most Fowl Mysteries Book 1)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
A historical mystery set in the Marquee in San Francisco although patterned after the Peabody Hotel with its Duck Brigade.

A few light moments in spite of the dead bodies are in store for Kitty, daughter of a famous opera star, Henry an elevator man and Saul fresh out of jail and tasked with overseeing a dozen mallards.

Saul is sure he saw something drop from a balcony but the trio cannot find a body. They find lots of other puzzling happenings and fishy acting people.

Ms. Mentink sends us on a merry chase with lots of suppositions by Kitty who wants to become a Pinkerton, new Christian Saul who strives not to be just another ex-con and Henry who wants to break into Vaudeville as a juggler. The author kept me guessing right up to the end.

I wonder what these stealthy sleuths will get into next. There is a teaser that another case is in the works for Kitty, Henry and Saul.

In 1905, the Grand Mallard Marquee is well known for its iconic style, as well as its daily duck parade. For Saul Niffler, a reformed jewel thief, working at the luxurious hotel offers a much-needed second chance. Staying out of trouble and in gainful employment is essential. Which makes seeing a body plummet from a penthouse window extra complicated.

Except…did he see it? There’s no body to be found, and Saul knows he should concentrate on his new duties as “Duck Commandant” rather than meddle. If only Kitty Rossi, a persistent young guest yearning to be a Pinkerton detective, would leave well enough alone. Kitty has already roped in Henry, the elevator man, to investigate suspicious goings-on around the hotel. And against his better judgment, Saul feels compelled to join them.

THE HEIRESS AND THE WOODSMAN by Christine Hill Suntz, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"This home is all that Simon will have, Charlotte. Promise me you won't let your father run this estate into the ground."

A promise made to her mother, a promise that Charlotte Carruthers was desperately trying to keep. If she only knew where her brother was so that she could convince him to return home. His appearance would quell suspicions about his rebel leanings and help Charlotte stave off offers to buy their crumbling family estate which was rich in valuable clay deposits. Tired of waiting for someone else to solve her problems, Charlotte impulsively heads off on her own to find Simon, and of course runs into a wee bit of trouble.

Woodsman Joshua Robertson is also on a quest to retrieve a brother, determined to learn the funds necessary to pay off Henry's unfortunate indenture. Imagine his surprise when he happens upon a stranded traveler along a dangerous road, failing in her disguise as a lad, offering him payment in return for his employ as her guide. Since Joshua has already been contracted to head in her same direction, he agrees, never realizing what a chain of events he has ignited; a threat to his heart being among them.

"The good Lord gives you opportunities. Only you can choose what you will make of them."

Impressive! Immersed within the lush, dense, untamed setting of this story while being equally absorbed into the dilemmas shouldered by each of these characters, it was impossible for me to ignore the fact that their struggles were real, their decisions tenuous, and the outcome both perilous and uncertain. Clinging to mere vestiges of hope, the God who never forsakes proved Himself forever faithful, one chapter at a time!

When a stranger offers him work tracking down a settler in the bush, he's desperate enough to agree.

Nothing has prepared Charlotte for the challenges of surviving the wilderness. When Joshua comes to her aid, she offers to pay him for guidance through the bush. THE BALLERINA'S BARGAIN by Lorri Dudley, Reviewed by Paula #ReleaseDay

Danforth Theater Series #1

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Charming historical tale by a new-to-me author. I was transported into the world of theater and ballet in 1815 England. London was a place that loved ballet and the prominent went to see and be seen by others and to flaunt their wealth.

This story is about Lord Grant Quincy who has inherited the Danforth Theater which is in trouble financially. He seeks to sell it in order to care for his siblings and preserve their estate.

Ballerina Emmeline only wants to protect her fellow ballerinas from being misused by wealthy, unsavory men. She makes a bargain with Grant that if he does not sell the Danforth, she will see that it makes money.

The author’s winsome writing style immersed me into a bygone era and illustrated the intricacies of the ballet and a culture that was intriguing. The characters portrayed a solid faith in God and His leading while they boldly stood up for others even though they realized the struggles that it would entail.

Completely captivating with a sweet romance and some secrets and twists to keep it interesting.

A burdened earl. A determined ballerina. Saving the theatre was part of their bargain. Losing their hearts wasn't.

London, 1815

Emmeline Laurent has survived by grace and grit. After her parents' execution in France, she has learned to live unseen as a humble ballerina instructing young pupils in a small London theatre. When whispers spread that the Danforth Theatre may be sold to an unscrupulous buyer, Emmeline fears not only for her livelihood but for the safety of her impressionable students. With no time and no options, she does the only thing she knows to do: leap into a moving carriage and bargain with the new lord who holds their fate.

Grant Atherton, the Earl of Quincy, has inherited the crushing weight of duty along with a failing theatre, an arranged engagement, two younger sisters to usher into society, and a mountain of his father's secrets. Selling the Danforth is the only way to save his family from ruin. The last thing he needs is a beautiful, infuriatingly determined ballerina turning his careful plans upside down.

But when Emmeline's hidden past begins surfacing and the danger circling the theatre proves far deadlier than either of them realized, Grant must choose between the life he planned and the one God may have been preparing all along.

For fans of Roseanna M. White and Julie Klassen — a sweeping Regency romance about the grace found in surrender, the courage it takes to trust, and the God who makes a way when every door seems closed.

STORM AT NOTTINGHAM CASTLE by Ann Elizabeth Fryer, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

 SISTERS OF SHERWOOD SERIES #1

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"Things were worse than she thought."

Following the death of their beloved stepfather, Charlotte Fieldstone and her two sisters appear to be not only penniless but also homeless following their stepbrother's demand they vacate Piping's Cross within days after their father's passing. Shortly before he died, Josiah Fleming had pressed an antique medal into Charlotte's hands, with directions for where to locate a second, making her promise to hide them both with the utmost care. Curious. Very curious indeed.

Also surprising is a hasty invitation for the sisters to live at Nottingham Castle with Charlotte's heretofore unknown great uncle, a Mr. Calvin Fieldstone, the request personally delivered by the property manager, Mr. Charles Rushforth. Feeling as if this option was a blessing in disguise the young women hastily pack essential items and make the move to the enormous property that boasts a variety of residential apartments above ground and a myriad of secrets below.

At this point the story becomes as entangled as a kitten playing with a ball of yarn, and never really relaxes until the very end, and even then the outcome feels a bit tenuous. (perfectly understandable, since this book is the first in a series) Charlotte has so many questions, and the only person she considers trusting is not who you might think, but someone else entirely.

A tale with interesting shades of Gothic atmosphere and a penchant for misdirection, written within a setting that takes on a
life of its own.

Immersed in the sights, sounds, and culture of ancient Rome, readers gain a birds eye view of how compromised many of the early church Christians had become in their forms of entertainment. While free to worship the one true God, they were celebrating death over life and turning a blind eye to Emperor Honorius' treatment of his war captives.

Extraordinary courage is written between the pages of this book, especially knowing (or discovering) that Telemachus was an actual historic figure, making Felix and Adel representative of any number of people caught in the crosshairs of Roman cruelty. Thankfully, a beautiful wellspring of love runs deep and wide from beginning to end; Felix's gentle admonitions to Adel that she is made in the image of God, a great treasure, worth fighting for, form roots of a fragile faith that proves stronger and bolder than any sword that mortal man might swing.

An outstanding book worthy of your undivided attention!

In this stirring historical romance by award-winning author Jamie Ogle, a young woman imprisoned in a Roman gladiator school becomes a legendary warrior. But when not even her fame is enough, she must fight to save herself and those she loves.

Rome, AD 403. As a loyal daughter of the Visigoth tribe, Adelgard followed her father to war, hoping to win back her family's approval. But after a clash with the Roman army, Adel is captured and sold to a gladiator school. Now she is the most famous gladiatrix in Rome, determined to keep the fickle love of the crowd and never again rely on anyone but herself for her own security. But beneath the fame lies a darkness and pain that holds her captive.

Felix despises Rome's fascination with violence. But after returning from medical training to discover his father missing and his family desperate, he had little choice but to accept a position at the gladiator school managed by his uncle. He finds a kindred spirit in Adel and does what he can to preserve the humanity of the rebel fighters, but when he receives orders that further compromise his beliefs, he arrives at a crossroads.

Then Telemachus, a Christian leader, approaches Felix with an urgent message: if the Visigoth captives are not released, their army will invade Rome. Despite the risk, the emperor is bent on proving his power through a stunning, deadly day of gladiatorial games. THE RELUCTANT HEALER OF HALIFAX by Terrie Todd, Reviewed by Trixi Oberembt

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
This is an eye-opening look at a disaster that happened in December of 1917 in Halifax Nova Scotia. A piece of history I didn’t know existed but appreciated learning through the expert pen of Terrie Todd. She brought it to vivid detail in the lives of her characters by both their reactions and emotions. It’s also a romance story which prevails through the tough times that happen afterwards...one that tests the love of Oliver and Pearline. I think for me this story touched on a lot of emotion that fully involved me. What a truly enjoyable read!

Faith-filled and emotional, you can’t help but be completely immersed in the pages of this story!!

Book 1 of 8: Petticoats and Patriots
A Sweet Patriotic Romance Series Across American History

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I love learning about history and this story was just the thing to read during our country’s 250th anniversary!

Taken from real accounts and background information, the author has crafted an awe inspiring tale of patriotism in 1776.

Lucy is a goldsmith working in her father’s shop and meets Branch who is a friend of Martha Washington. Lucy is a Patriot and is unsure of where Branch stands in the Patriotic cause. I liked the atmospheric writing that put me right in the story. Ms. Hatfield portrayed the characters with a sure faith that showed in their actions.

The author depicted the spies with interesting information about spy craft of the era, including the dangers.

Although the romance was slow, it was very well drawn. The way the locket, other pieces of jewelry and other items that might be in a goldsmith shop were used was very interesting.

This was a great start to a truly American story. I look forward to the others in the series.

THE LIGHT OF STARS by Jenelle Hovde, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

"You will marry before the summer ends."

A solid declaration. Kitty Grenville's life had been full of them. Removed from India at a very young age, she and her brother became their grandfather's wards and the presumed inheritors of his vast fortune. Apparently even Kitty's marriage has been predetermined, for her groom to be is none other than the heir apparent to the highly profitable East India Company, Sebastian Sinclair. Kitty would much rather live out her nights studying the stars.

Traveling to England to defend the East India Company amongst the rising concerns of illegal opium trade and mistreatment of contractees is the last thing that Sebastian Sinclair would have chosen to do, but adding marriage to his list of assignments? In spite of his misgivings, Sebastian complies with his own grandfather's edict and is dutifully reintroduced to a lovely young woman who seems determined to sidestep his intentions. In a way, he doesn't blame her, nevertheless Kitty's reckless determination to make her own decisions nearly derails their reputations, prompting a rash decision with life long consequences.

Rich in color, culture, and characters this story stretches its seams with shrouded insinuations of dark deals and selfish motives. It would be miraculous for love to take root in such an environment of hurt, distrust, danger and greed. Only the One who put the stars in place and gave them their names could perform such a feat!

"Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number; he calleth them all by names by the greatness of his might, for that he is strong in power; not one faileth." - the prophet Isaiah

Outstanding novel!

An arranged marriage. A powerful company tainted with corruption. Two souls caught between obligation and a longing to find their true calling in this Regency romance set in glittering London ballrooms and Calcutta street markets.

When Kitty Grenville's grandfather announces her engagement to Sebastian Sinclair, she's appalled. Sebastian Sinclair carries the weight of duty and regret. To atone for past sins, he complies with his grandfather's orders to return to England, fulfill a long-standing betrothal, and defend the maligned East India Company before Parliament. Though Kitty makes her disinterest clear, Sebastian is drawn to her intellect and spirit.

As Kitty navigates her first London season, her opinion of Sebastian begins to shift, especially when he shields her from scandal. When he's abruptly called back to India, Kitty stuns everyone by marrying him and going with him, hoping to escape her grandfather's control—and to find her mother.

Together, Kitty and Sebastian must confront the legacy of family and empire—and discover if a marriage born of obligation can grow into a love strong enough to endure.Sweet historical romance filled with hope, faith, and an arranged marriage dynamic

THE HEIRESS AND THE WOODSMAN by Christine Hill Suntz, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Great adventure story set in the Canadian wilderness of 1837.

Two unlikely people meet on the road, a wealthy young lady, Charlotte, searching for a missing brother and Joshua Robertson on his way to earn some money in order to get his young stepbrother out of indenture.

The author was adept at describing the situations on a muddy trail and the turbulent and dangerous times of political unrest between Canada and England.

Full of secrets and intrigue, the story shows the faith of the characters in dire situations. Charlotte remembers many of the scriptures cited by her faithful servant, Fulton, a father figure. Joshua struggles with what is ethically right when he finds that he is dealing with a disreputable man.

As Charlotte and Joshua travel, they learn each other’s character and grow from friendship to genuine love.
Historical fiction at its best.

 (The Majestic Theater Book 1)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
If you are looking for a book that is historical, steeped in faith, and has an intriguing mystery, try this one.

Angie is painting backdrops in the The Majestic Theater where her late mother was a favorite actress. But her mother warned her to stay away from the historic building. It seems others do not want her delving into her mother’s death and she receives threats.

Trace, who oversees the renovation of the theater, comes to her aid and together they try to puzzle out the mysteries surrounding the theater.

The author has taken a real place and similar events and fashioned an absorbing story that has a surprising ending. This has the theme of realizing that God forgives completely, if we repent, then we can rest in His finished work of salvation. “We must not simply repent enough to be forgiven, but surrender enough to be completely changed.” “No sin you commit is greater than God’s grace.”

I appreciate the honesty of this beautifully written book.

The author gave a sneak peek of the next book in the series which looks equally as entertaining.
