New Release! "TWICE SHY"

In my new novella, "Twice Shy" (thanks, DeAnna, for the title inspiration!) my heroine is haunted by a dog attack that occurred in her childhood. Rebecca Madison's story came from my own experience.

When I was in elementary school I had a half mile walk from the bus stop to my house. Every day a pair of Dobermans would race from their porch to the road, snarling and barking and growling, prompting my neighbor and me to pick up sticks and rocks after we got off the bus in case the dogs attacked us. It was a terrible way to end a school day.

Fortunately, we were never actually attacked, but the fear stuck with me. Even today, as an adult, I have to tamp down my nerves when I walk past a dog that isn't fenced or leashed.

I tended to discount my experience because it didn't end in real trauma, never realizing how much those events affected me as an adult.

So, in Twice Shy, my heroine discounts her trauma because it's not as traumatic as that of the hero, who as a foreign correspondent in a war zone experienced "real" trauma.

What we don't realize is that the human brain doesn't differentiate between degrees of trauma. It's just traumatized, and it responds accordingly until we process the events in a healthy way. One person's "that's dumb" fear is another person's nightmare-inducing phobia.

A little grace and mercy go a long way toward healing, whether we're dealing with ourselves or someone else. That's a good thing to remember, as everyone we meet is dealing with something.

Twice Shy is available now for just 99¢ on Kindle.

Help me title my next novella!

I'm currently at work on my next Forget Me Not Romances novella. This next story will be part of the Four-Legged Love collection, stories that include dogs as a part of the plot.
I initially thought I'd write about West Highland White Terriers since I have two and love them dearly...
Willabea and Archie, my Westies... Click here for Willabea's story.

But then I had another thought... My little Colorado community is home to a world-renowned event that revolves around some incredible dogs and their handlers: the Meeker Classic Sheepdog Trials. Sheepdog trials take place all over the world, and they are amazing to watch.

My 11th novella, due out in April 2018, connects sheepdog handler Donovan Drake and photojournalist Rebecca Madison. Donovan is a former war correspondent who was seriously injured on the job and commended for his bravery under fire, but who has since become a virtual recluse outside of his blog. Returning to his grandparents' home to work with sheepdogs is therapy for him. Rebecca was bitten by a dog as a child and the experience has made her phobic. This particular assignment, given by her boss and sometimes boyfriend, will test more than her photography skills.

I'm in the process of walking through Donovan and Rebecca's story. As usual, I have little to no idea how it will turn out in the end, except there will be a happy ending or I'll rewrite the whole thing... (writers' prerogative). Meanwhile, I'm looking for title help! Submit your title idea in the comments. If I choose one of your titles, I'll send you an ebook copy of the novella when it's released.

Where is Spock when we need him?

Some days it’s hard not to be discouraged about the state of things. Does anyone else sense that we’re at a terrible impasse? A kind of crux, a turning point, where we’re either going to gather ourselves up and figure out some real solutions to our problems or devolve into something worse than anarchy?
It’s disheartening to hear news reports about mass shootings in churches and trucks driven through crowds on an almost daily basis. And everyone seems to have his or her pet peeve on which we take sides and determine THIS, THIS ONE THING, is the sole cause of all our woes, whether it’s “happy holidays” vs. “Merry Christmas” or illegal drugs, or illegal immigrants, or kneeling football players, or porkbarrel waste in Washington, or... you can fill in the blank with whatever it is that’s got you offended.
Unfortunately, none of the blustering and blathering is accomplishing anything. It’s all just a lot of hot air. When are we going to calm down and actually start developing real, workable solutions?
You may recall the Dr. Seuss story of the North-Going Zax and the South-Going Zax from “Seuss on the Loose.” These creatures who dwell in the Prairie of Prax are stubborn. So stubborn they refuse to go in any direction other than their assigned directions (like conservatives and liberals, perhaps?).
In the book, when the South-Going Zax runs into the North-Going Zax, they’re stuck. They cannot compromise, they cannot solve their problem because they are too stubborn to adapt, to change, or even to see another way, and the world goes on around them, leaving them behind.
Is that where we’re heading as a nation? Are we becoming a nation of Zaxes, stuck in opposition to one another? I hope not. I hope rational, reasonable minds will find the courage to crawl out from behind the rocks where they’ve been hiding from the mud-slinging. If this was an episode of Star Trek (the original series) it’s about to the point in the storyline where Spock steps up, to everyone’s relief, and overrides Captain Kirk’s emotional outbursts and machismo with logic in order to save the Starship Enterprise.
Where are the Spocks of our generation?

Are you an original Star Trek fan, or do you prefer one of the more recent incarnations? Why?

New Christmas novella: Her Christmas Outlaw

By Niki Turner

Some shameless self-promotion this week, partly because this is a new release, and partly because I just wanted to share this wonderful cover for Her Christmas Outlaw!

http://amzn.to/2y2R8D0
“I don’t think this is wise, Mary Jane. Are you sure you’ve thought this all the way through?” Lark trembled as Mary Jane’s fingers deftly fastened the tiny hooks running up the back of the cactus green peau de soie evening gown. She’d never worn anything so fine.
"Don’t get your tail down, Lark,” Mary Jane quipped. “You’re not going to get in trouble. We look enough alike that with the mask on—” she plucked an ornate green satin half-mask off the dresser and waved it in front of Lark’s face “—everyone will assume it’s me downstairs, being a dutiful niece. All you need do is mingle for an hour, then say you have a headache and retire early. By the time everyone rolls out of bed tomorrow, I’ll be long gone, and you’ll resume life as usual with no one the wiser.”
Who hasn't, in a difficult moment, imagined making a nighttime escape from life as you know it? Starting over somewhere fresh, leaving behind everything that has held you back and beginning your life anew?
It's a lovely fantasy, and particularly apt for a romantic tale. It's also fraught with potential for danger, deceit and trouble. That's where Lark Livingston finds herself at the beginning of Her Christmas Outlaw. (Available in print and ebook.)
Along the way Lark runs into a rough-and-tumble former preacher-turned-Pinkerton masquerading as an outlaw named Roman Dunning. Roman has to make a choice between mercy and justice.

"The mustache under her finger twitched. It was soft. Softer than she’d thought, and she quelled the insane urge to stroke it.
He wrapped a hand around her wrist and pulled her finger away from his mouth. “As much as I hate to admit it, you’re probably right.”Lark tossed her head. “Of course I’m right. Now let me go.”“One thing first,” he muttered. Then he dipped his head and brought his mouth to hers in a sweet, searing kiss. Something interminably bright and pure blossomed behind her eyes as beautiful as the fireworks she’d seen one year on Independence Day. She leaned into him, hands going first to his chest, then curling around his neck and pulling him closer. He growled, low in his throat, and then he was picking her up by the waist and swinging her bodily onto Crazy Charley’s back. The sudden change in altitude had her gasping for air and clutching at the saddle to steady herself. She felt dizzy. And bereft. And wonderful.

-->

This was a fun story to tell, set in the northwest Colorado territory I call home, near Browns Park, where some of the Wild West's most famous outlaws and their bands hid from the authorities.

Her Christmas Outlaw is part of the A Christmas Masquerade novella collection published by Forget Me Not Romances/Winged Publications.
