All five of the Nosy Parker stories are on sale as ebooks - for only 99cents each. Sleuth along with our heroines!

Inspired by the famous Girl Detective, the members of the Olentangy Heights Girls' Detective Society, affectionately known as the Nosy Parkers, spent their formative years studying criminology, codes, and capers. Unfortunately, opportunities to put their unique skills to work were thin on the ground in the post-war boom of their little corner of suburbia and they eventually grew up to pursue more sensible careers. Until...

#1 The Counterfeit Clue by Lisa Karon Richardson

Gemma Gaines gave up mystery solving years ago, but when friend is killed in a hit-and-run, all the instincts honed by years in the Olentangy Heights Girls’ Detective Society tell her this may not have been an accident. Then she finds that her friend slipped some cryptic notes into her handbag and she’s convinced murder has been done.

With the doggedness of the great Girl Detective herself, Gemma follows up on the clues. Real-life mystery solving isn’t as tidy as it is in novels though, and before she knows it, her roommate has been kidnapped and it’s all her fault. With the help of a handsome new neighbor – who may be more than he seems – she is soon on the trail of a counterfeiting ring that would like nothing more than to see her put out of circulation for good.

#2  The Case of the Clobbered Cad by Debra E. Marvin:

Heather Munro’s youthful devotion to The Girl Detective led to a passion for digging around in history. Now pursuing her Master's Degree in Celtic Studies, Heather must balance exploring Edinburgh with her determination to excel in her all–male classes at the University. Unfortunately, on her first night working in the Archives room, she discovers the dead body of a visiting professor, the same would-be lothario she’d hoped never to see again.

As clues come to light, it’s clear someone hopes to frame Heather for the murder. Besides her quirky landlady, whom can she trust? How can she clear her name? The police and the American Consul have plenty of suspects, but only two seem to have both motive and opportunity: Heather and the quiet Scottish historian she longs to trust.

#3  The Case of the Beleaguered Bride by Debra E. Marvin:

After enduring an unexpected test to her sleuthing skills in Edinburgh, American Heather Munro looks forward to attending a restful family wedding in County Cork, Ireland. But delight turns to dilemma when the bride’s ex-fiancĂ© shows up pleading for a second chance…then dies under mysterious circumstances.

Heather’s travel itinerary didn’t include snooping through family secrets or being caught up in international politics, but she can’t stand by when a rush to judgment points the blame at an innocent man and derails the upcoming nuptials. An outsider in the stunning harbor town of Cobh, Heather’s determined search for answers is thwarted at every turn. But Heather has never been one to give up, and she’ll do all she can to get the wedding back on track and the murderer behind bars before he or she strikes again. Even at the risk of her own life.

#4 The Executed Executive by Gena Webb:

Mary Wright is living a predictable life as a secretary in San Antonio, Texas. But when her boss is murdered, Mary goes into full-blown Girl Detective mode. A chance encounter with a charming private investigator gives her hope that she can solve the case even if the police can’t. If not, she’s in trouble, because the killer seems to have set his sights on her.

#5 The Vicious Victim by Lisa Karon Richardson:

New York City, 1954 With skill and imagination, Gemma Gaines has landed a job writing radio dramas for Consolidated Broadcasting Company at the famous Rockefeller Center building. But Gemma’s worried her imagination might have gotten the best of her when she thinks she hears a behind-the-scenes murder. Later, when her boss is found dead in his apartment, she can’t keep herself from working on the case. With the help of Erik, her Secret Service boyfriend, she gathers clues and compiles a complex cast of questionable characters, until the real-life drama reaches a finale that no one saw coming.

Let's Chat

by Jennifer AlLee

It's my day to write the post. Problem is, I have no idea what to write. As you can imagine, this is frustrating for a writer. It's not writer's block. If it were, I would know what to do. When it comes down to it, non-fiction is hard, especially when the options are so broad. "Write anything" sounds liberating, but it's more like being thrown into the deep end of the pool and being told, "use whatever stroke you like."

If we met for the first time, at a party or a writers conference, we'd learn about each other by sharing stories and interesting facts. So why don't we try a little chit chat? I'll go first...

When I go to Taco Bell, I order a burrito supreme with no onions and extra cheese. Before I eat it, I open the tortilla, swirl the insides around with my finger, then fold it back up again. Why? Otherwise, you have a burrito with a lump of cheese at one end, a lump of sour cream at the other, and none of either in the middle. Swirling is required for maximum goodness.

I can use my tongue to tie a cherry stem into a knot. It's not at all pretty, as it requires a number of contortions to accomplish this feat. But I can do it.

I'm allergic to decongestants and gold injections (it's a long story).

Four generations - Grandma Marie, Mom (Rose-Marie),
Great-grandma Meta, and baby Jennifer
My grandfather was in a movie with Clark Gable. He was only in one scene, playing the violin, but he's right next to Clark.

When I was little, I lived with my mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. I kept getting my grandmother and great-grandmother confused, so I called great-grandma "Grandma" and I called my grandmother "Great Marie." Eventually, I shortened it just to Marie. It wasn't until two years after my great-grandmother passed away that I finally called my grandmother "Grandma."

I was almost named Meta, after my great-grandmother. As much as I loved her, I really am glad my mom and dad decided to go with Jennifer.

Now you know a little more about me. Tell me something about yourself. I look forward to it!

Words, Words, Words

by
Jennifer AlLee

There's a great scene in My Fair Lady where Eliza Doolittle loses it. For days, Henry Higgins has bombarded her with words, now Freddy is talking about his feelings instead of showing her, and she can't take it anymore. She bursts into song: "Words, words, words! I'm so sick of words!"

I know I'm not the only writer who identifies with Eliza. Some days, there are just too many words. Especially when we're told that some words are just WRONG and we should never, ever use them! And, no, I'm not talking about swear words.

There are word lists floating around. Lists that are supposed to be helpful resources for writers. Personally, I would love to see them disappear. They have titles like:

  • Weasel Words
  • 100 Ways to Say "Good"
  • "Said" is Dead, Use This Instead
  • Keep Away from "Was"
  • Words to Use Instead of (insert adjective here)
You get the idea. Writers, especially in the early stages of their journey, are taught to avoid certain words. They are drilled to avoid passive writing (hence not using the word "was"). I'm sure all these lists were made with the best of intentions, but the result can be similar to a person who wants to add variety to her writing, so she uses a thesaurus to replace common words with words she'd never use in day-to-day conversation.

Another result is awkward writing. I once judged a contest entry in which the author must have been traumatized by the threat of disaster if she used "was." The poor dear did every literary contortion imaginable to avoid it, including just plain leaving it out, creating sentences like, "The dog not happy about the cat."

Other lists end up confusing new writers. It's drilled into us that the word "said" as a dialogue tag is almost invisible. It's okay to replace it with "asked" for a question, but anything else is intrusive. So what about the list of words to use in place of "said"? We're told to avoid purple prose, yet the lists give us hundreds of words that can replace "good," "amazing," "very," and on and on.

My biggest peeve, though, is with the list of Weasel Words. These are words that find their way into your writing too often and weaken it (or so they say). I've seen these handed out in writer's classes with the admonition to NEVER use them. What are the words? Here are a few:
  • just
  • very
  • really
  • then
  • but
  • was
  • most
  • some
  • only
Obviously, you can't write a book using none of those words. And yes, there are times when we have pet words that pop up far too often. "Just" is one of mine. But not one of those words is bad. In my opinion, there's a time and place for every word. When we start slashing them just because they're on a list, we lose some of our individuality.

Please note, the viewpoint expressed by the author (Jen) is hers alone and does not necessarily reflect the views of any or all of the Inkies. Take it with a grain of salt and a smile, then go forth and write using the tools (or avoiding the tools) that are the best for you.

Cheers!

Six Things it Helps to Know if You Want to be a Writer

by
Jennifer AlLee

I’ve been writing seriously for more years than we need to count. I learned a lot during that time, most of it by running into brick walls and experiencing many metaphorical bloody noses. It’s the kind of stuff I wish I’d known ahead of time, which is why I’d like to share some of it with you, in no particular order.

1.  The writing life is hard.
Being an author is not just about writing a wonderful, enthralling novel. The professional writer must also be able to endure the pain of rejection when the publisher of her dreams says, “That's all wrong for us.” She must remain humble on that glorious day, often years later, when the book finally does sell. She must be able to don the multiple hats of writer, speaker, salesperson, marketing expert, and cheerleader, even if she’s really not a hat person. And she must do all this while juggling a personal life.

2.  The writing life is full of fabulous surprises.
There have been times when I stared at a blank screen, praying for the words to come, and they did. Other times a character would behave in a way I hadn’t planned, taking the story in a new direction. Those are some of my favorite writing moments, because that’s when I know I've got help writing the story.

3.  Your first draft shouldn’t be perfect.
Back in the beginning, I agonized over each page of my first draft. It took months to write the first few chapters because I’d go over and over them, tweaking and fixing, searching for just the right word or metaphor. Then I heard the advice that set me free: Just get the first draft done, or else you’ll have nothing to edit. It was like the shackles fell off my wrists. I get it now. I don’t have to be perfect out of the gate. After the first draft is done, then I get to edit and polish. I've found that using this approach has not only helped me write faster, it's also allowed me to find my voice.

4.  Don’t stop writing.
Boy, do I wish I’d grasped this concept early on. For some reason, I thought I had to wait for my first book to sell before I could start working on a new one. Like it would be wasted time if I didn’t have a confirmed sale on my tally sheet. Not true! The best thing to do after finishing one project is to begin another. I know an author who sold an amazing seven manuscripts within a two week period. She was able to do this because over the years, as she worked toward publication, she wrote consistently. When she finally had two publishers express interest, she had an inventory of work for them to choose from.

5.  You’ll never learn everything…. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t try.
Very early in my writing career, an editor suggested I'd benefit from taking some writing classes. I was highly offended, believing that writing classes were for people who didn’t know how to write and I, after all, had been born with that gift. I hang my head in shame now thinking of the arrogant little pipsqueak I was. If I’d taken that advice, I might have seen my first novel published in my twenties rather than my forties. It’s amazing how many people believe the ability to write is something you’re born with, like brown eyes or red hair. It’s a common belief that writing can’t be taught. Actually, I think it’s more likely that storytelling ability can’t be taught, but even that’s up for discussion. When it comes to the craft and mechanics of writing a crazy-good story, that absolutely can be taught. A writer should always be evolving, growing, refining, and improving his craft. Instructional books, seminars, conferences, and critique groups are great sources of building up writing muscles. No matter how long a person has been writing or how many books he’s had published, there’s always more to learn.

6.  If you touch one soul, you’ve done your job.
We all have our own reasons for getting into the writing biz. I've chosen it as my career, so making money is part of it (the part I'm still building up). First and foremost, I want to entertain people. Second, I hope people feel better after they finish reading one of my novels than they did before. When I get letters or emails from readers telling me how a certain part of my book touched them, then I've succeeded. Writing is hard but it's also incredible. There’s no job I’d rather have.
