 Ancient Historical Biblical Fiction Retelling of the Woman at the Well, for Fans of The Chosen

 

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Based on the Biblical story of the Samaritan Woman at the well, the author draws on research into the customs of the day and area. While the Samaritans were separated from the Jews, they worshiped the same God and carried many of the same traditions. This story starts out as Nessa, claimed to be the most beautiful woman in Sychar, has just become of marriageable age and has to abide by her father’s decisions. She is painted as a victim of the times, being given in marriage to several men who either died or had her put away. The author made me care for Nessa and sympathize with the situations she was experiencing.
 

The redemption comes when Jesus travels with his disciples to Jacob’s Well. The story shows how much Jesus cares for the individual. Nessa has had many husbands but has never found a man who loves her for who she really is. Jesus shows her just such love even though He reveals her sins to her. I like that the author expands a bit on the story when the Samaritans ask Jesus to stay with them for two days. She postulates that He taught them through parables which seems entirely possible.
 

Nessa’s repentance causes her to joyfully tell her whole community about Jesus. Her surrender to God’s will results in something far better than the consequences of her past.
 

The author deftly portrayed how Nessa was bound in sin and tradition and how she was lifted up when she listened to the Master’s voice.

in the Royal Courts of Queen Esther during Ancient History

 

PAULA'S REVIEW:

Another excellent story about ancient Persia and the court of Queen Esther. This time from the perspective of a potter who plays a role in the rescue of the Jewish people from evil Haman.
Of course these stories are fictional and are about fictional people, but it is fun to see what might have happened. Ms Afshar has done a lot of research into the times and inserts a real artifact into her story. That is what Sazana and Jadon are searching for.
 

I love a good second chance romance and this one fits the bill. Sazana is the potter, an unusual role for a woman. She and Jadon, one of the elite guards of the royals, have an unpleasant past. But when they are thrown together to help Queen Esther, things get dangerous and they slowly grow together again.
 

Ms Afshar personalizes her story of Esther with excellent details about palace life and pottery making of the era. I like the way she depicts Esther as caring, friendly and using her status as a tool for good.

I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

There were many days that Zahava didn't feel like a blessing from on high. In spite of her secretive skills as a master goldsmith, her physical limitations made her doubt that any man would support her as a husband. Until one night, under the stars, a chance encounter with an inebriated soldier changed the course of her future.

Gavriel, once part of an elite company of soldiers traveling with the king's son, had been demoted to a lower position because of his reckless behavior. If the truth were known, he deserved it, but there was nothing deserving about the beautiful woman who became entangled into his life. Divine providence was on full display in a way that neither Zahava nor Gavriel could have ever imagined.

Many historical novels have a subtle layering of romance, but this seemed to be an over arching love story, and a very cativating one at that; God's love for His people, His people's love for their land, a father's love for his daughter, a son's struggle to love his father, a man's love for his wife. The path that Zahava and Gavriel travel is not one they would have necessarily chosen, for it meant experiencing both tragedy and grief, but ultimately it was one that made them stronger in their faith and confident in their calling.

An absolutely lovely story set during the reign of King Saul. This is Gavriel and Zahava’s story and what a striking one it is. I was so immersed in it as I was waiting to find out what happened to Shay, the lost young cousin, that Gavi, Avi, and Zevi have been looking for.
 

This was a look back to ancient times that made the Bible come alive. The author gave us everyday people who trusted in the One True God with many applications that we can use today. Zahava, a Kenite, worked with metal and was taught by her father from secret methods passed down for generations. As we see her work with gold, until the final polish, we also see what God can accomplish in us, taking away the dross, working in us, and refining us until the final polish by Him, so that we can reflect Him.
 

Gavi is a warrior sent by Yonathan to take the Kenites out of danger before Saul and his army attack. An incident forces a marriage between Gavi and Zahava. The romance between the two grows as they face danger and learn to appreciate one another.
 

We have a hint about the missing Shay, but we will have to wait until book four for that outcome.

Through the captivating words of Ms Ogle, I was transported to 310 AD and the early Christian church. Newly appointed Bishop, Nikolas, was sent to Myra in Greece where the persecuted church needed to meet in secret. But even in the dire, lean times, they had a solid hope in Christ. The author weaves an exceptional story of faith amidst danger and poverty, but showed that the people came together and shared the wealth of the gospel and the hope of the world to come. “This earthly life is short and full of strife, but there is a better, truer one coming. Let us set our gaze there.”

“The Lord has prepared work for each of us and while we have breath, we have purpose.”

There is a clear gospel message that should provide inspiration for all of us. Even in adversity, there is hope in Christ. These characters counted it an act of worship to care for those in need.
So many worthwhile themes are shown: forgiveness, faith, repentance, redemption, clear biblical teaching, and unfailing reliance on Christ and His word. 

This was an excellent story of the early Christians, with the added romance of Demi and Nikolas that enhanced the lessons we could all profit from.

Also interesting was the culture of the era and the occupation of diving for coral which added to the atmosphere. This author is quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Queen Esther's Court Series: An Ancient Persia 

Biblical Historical Fiction Set in Queen Esther's Time

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This was a book that I could not put down. I was transported to ancient Persia and the court of Queen Esther. I learned about the inner workings of the palace and was fascinated by the girl Roxannah and how she rose to assistant cook for Queen Ester.

It also included a memoir of Esther, looking back on the events surrounding her rise to Queen and being able to save her people from evil Haman. I learned how far reaching and how limited her position was in the household of the King.
I enjoyed the characters of Roxannah, the servant girl Sisy and one of the royal physicians, Adin. The romance unfolding between Roxannah and Adin was a treat. I was intrigued by the dishes that were cooked and the ingredients available in that part of the world. Who knew that marsh mallow sweets dated back that far?

The story was not only informative but included palace conspiracy and political machinations. The author presented a realistic picture of the setting and time frame. She also showed the spiritual struggle of Roxannah and how Adin won not only her heart but helped her to believe in the one true God.  

I am glad there will be other books in the series that takes place in the court of Queen Esther.

Be transported to 1040 BC and see what the soldiers of Israel have to do to prepare to serve King Saul against the Philistines. Zevi, one of the cousins from book one, Voice of the Ancient, is tasked with recruiting men for the army as well as artisans to benefit King Saul. Yochana is a perfumer and has lost her young husband to a battle and has disdain for the king.

From mistrust to awakening romance, through adventures and courageous actions, Zevi and Yochana grow in respect for eachother. Zevi has a complicated background and would seek revenge on the enemy for what they did to his hometown. But God has placed him in a loving family with a father who gave sound advice: “Just as a soldier trusts his commander and a commander trusts the king, you must trust the King above all Kings to direct you…the orders are more often whispered than shouted.” 

I was captivated by the story and the Bible was brought to life. The descriptions of the perfuming craft and ingredients was very interesting. I loved the loyalty portrayed by Zevi’s family, especially when he was accused of murder.

If you like Biblical fiction, you will not want to miss this engaging tale of adventure.

Spoken confidently, courageously, and adamantly by a formidable captain in King Saul's army on the cusp of his most significant foray to date. "I (Zevi) was no longer a frightened and lonely boy riddled with the wounds of my solitary past, but a soldier of the Most High God  . . . " What had inspired such a dramatic change in perspective?

Perhaps a significant pivot occurred when Zevi stood on the threshold of a thriving perfume shop, its sole proprietress even more lovely than the odors permeating from within. Her wares displayed the kind of talent that King Saul would value in his court and while Zevi's priority was to recruit soldiers from Maresha, the king had also requested skilled artisans. After Zevi's persuasion attempts went awry, Yochana ended up in the back of a wagon against her will, along with the tools of her trade . . . to say that the young widow was furious, indignant, and uncooperative? . . . a gross understatement and understandably so.

Be still my heart! Enamored many times over with this story's sweet romantic interludes, the rich biblical history was informative, astonishing and awe inspiring. Watching this mighty warrior release his heart to the work of the Spirit within, I felt the depth of his angst over an unexpected betrayal while quietly observing his humble reliance on God's will even if . . . This entire narrative stands as a stalwart, tangible, unwavering, uncompromising reminder that our very souls may take refuge behind . . . the "shield of the mighty".

WINNIE'S REVIEW
Connilyn Cossette is my go-to author for riveting Biblical fiction. I can always count on her stories to sweep me away to Biblical times and places and keep me engrossed and turning pages. Shield of the Mighty is Cossette’s second book in The King’s Men series and stars Zevi, who is a captain in King Saul’s army. 

He is sent to surrounding cities to recruit soldiers to join the army and fight against the Philistines. He is also tasked with finding skilled artisans to serve in Saul’s court. When he happens upon talented and beautiful perfume maker Yochana, he tries to persuade her to join his group. Zevi is courageous and loyal, but his difficult past is proving hard to overcome. Yochana, whose husband was killed in battle, is plucky and has a gift for healing. The story alternates between the points of view of these two characters, and it’s interesting to see what each is feeling.

Cossette is a master at creating vividly-drawn, colorful, engaging characters and bringing them alive in a captivating tale. Her stories are richly detailed and impeccably researched and always have a deep inspirational message. This book has a very strong faith message as well as a message of the importance of family, whether biological or adopted. I recommend this book and series to those who enjoy Biblical historical fiction.

I absolutely love Connilyn Cossette’s Biblical fiction. She is such a talented author! I always become so immersed in her stories and the lives of her characters. I’m happy to say that Shield of the Mighty was no different!

I loved both Zevi and Yochana! Their chemistry jumped right off the page! I enjoyed how their bond developed and how their relationship showed the importance of forgiveness. Their story was one of healing, compassion and strength. It had so many surprising twists and turns! I loved every second of it. The mystery thread that started in the first story, Voice of the Ancient, continued in this story with many questions left unanswered. I cannot wait for its resolution!

I am so fond of this series and its characters! I cannot wait for the next story, which I’m hoping is about Gavi. If you enjoy Biblical fiction, you must try this excellent series!

UP FROM DUST by Heather Kaufman, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

Up from Dust is a touching story based on Martha from the New Testament. While much of it is fictionalized, the relationship between her and her siblings, Lazarus and Mary, sounds like it has been carefully researched. Also, the second part of the book tells of the entrance of Jesus into their lives and their relationship with him.

While Biblical fiction isn’t my favorite genre, this is an excellent interpretation of how Martha’s life could have played out based on the events recorded in the Bible. It is well-written and interesting. I recommend this book to those who enjoy Biblical fiction.

(Women of the Way): (A Historical New Testament Biblical Fiction Novel)

Up from Dust by Heather Kaufman is her debut Biblical fiction story centered around Martha, Mary, and Lazarus. I had heard so many good things about this story that I knew I had to give it a try.

I really loved most everything about part one, which is the first half of this story. I don’t want to give away any spoilers, so I’ll just say I was completely invested and loved how Martha’s story was shaping up. Part two of this story centered more around Jesus and His interactions with Mary, Martha, and Lazarus leading up to His crucifixion. I liked how many Biblical truths were in this part of the story. While I did wish something that did eventually happen would’ve happened sooner, and with more of a lead up to it, I still enjoyed the second half, but not quite as much as the first half. How’s that for being cryptic? lol. I’m just really trying to stay away from spoiler territory. I felt the writing in this story was very strong and I would definitely read this author again.

This is the first book in the Women of the Way series. I am curious to see who the next story is about!

THE PEASANT KING by Tessa Afshar, Reviewed by Kim

The Peasant King is another beautifully written story by Tessa Afshar. I absolutely loved The Hidden Prince so I was excited to read about Keren and Jared’s daughter, Jemmah.

When Keren goes missing, Jemmah sets out to find her. This turns into an adventure that was unexpected and so fun to read! I loved both Asher and Jemmah and how their relationship developed. I also loved getting to see how characters from the previous story were doing. As usual with a Tessa Afshar story, I was completely immersed the entire time!

I’d love to have another story in this series! Highly recommended! 4 stars!

VOICE OF THE ANCIENT (The King's Men #1) by Connilyn Cossette, Reviewed by Winnie and Paula

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
While I don’t often read Biblical fiction, there are some authors I make exceptions for, and Connilyn Cossette is one of them. Her impeccable research and beautiful prose bring her stories to vivid life. I often find myself re-reading parts of the pages because the writing is so captivating and the imagery so remarkable.

Voice of the Ancient is another of Cossette’s masterpieces, and I enjoyed it immensely. The characters were well-drawn, engaging, and flawed--with room for growth and development during the tale. Avidan and Keziah were both endearing characters and their growth in faith was beautiful to see. I also was delighted at the appearance of some of the characters from the author’s previous series in this story.

Plenty of action, suspense, intrigue, inspiration, and a touch of romance fill this book, and those who enjoy superbly written Biblical fiction will likely love this.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
A trip back in time to the beginning of the reign of King Saul. Four cousins embark on a journey to join the army slated to rescue their fellow Hebrews from the Ammonites. Told through the eyes of Avidan, a Benjaminite and a Levite, and Kesziah, a girl being used as a pawn in a political alliance. 

I was transported to a world that was dangerous and interesting. I learned a bit about how the tribes of Israel diverged from worshipping only the One True God and accepted other gods alongside Yahweh, diluting His true character. I appreciated Avidan because he was taught the old stories of his people and kept the True Faith. He was representing Yahweh as he recounted the history. Keziah was so very brave and came to know that Yahweh was the Only God through the stories that Avi told.

The themes included the steadfastness of God, the importance of remaining faithful to God and that “Only Yahweh knows the end from the beginning.”

A very exciting and immersive book that has me eager to read the next book in the series.

Avidan, draped in the foolishness of his emerging manhood, side-stepped the directives of his father and followed his cousins into the throes of war against the Ammonites, having been summoned by the newly anointed King Saul to defend their neighbors. Unfortunately in the process Avidan put his much younger cousin in harm's way. Doing his best to hide Shalem until the battle was over, he left him in a shallow cave close to the battleground, only to return and discover that the lad had disappeared.

Keziah learns on the eve of her wedding that her powerful clan chief father has betrothed her to a vicious man who would undoubtedly use her and then toss her aside, presumably as a reward to one of his men. Taking a great risk, an unlikely source gives aid to Keziah so that she can flee on horseback in full disguise. Following an altercation along the way, she is found along the outskirts of a marketplace by none other than Avidan, who is searching for his cousin. The two form a partnership of sorts, Keziah maintaining her ruse the best that she can and Avidan who sees straight through it, vowing to protect her as she makes the dangerous flight back to her mother's family.

Steeped in Old Testament history, this coming of age story is rich in content, illuminating what could be a confusing convergence of holy and pagan into bold, fascinating perspective through Avidan's brilliant storytelling and Keziah's open heart. Their journey is not an easy one, but the One Who Sees and the One Who Hears never leaves them to fight the battles without or the battles within, on their own.

KIM'S REVIEW:
Connilyn Cossette never disappoints! Her Biblical fiction is so well written. You can tell the time and research she puts into her books. This makes it so easy to become fully immersed in her stories. I feel like I can easily picture her characters and the places she takes me. Speaking of her characters, they always worm their way into my heart. The Voice of the Ancient, book 1 of The King’s Men series, was no different.

I loved Avi and Keziah’s story! So many unpredictable things happened that I hard a hard time catching my breath! I enjoyed every second of it! The character growth for both Avi and Keziah was so well done and their relationship was just perfect!

The childhood bond between Avi, Shay, Gavi, and Zevi - the next stories in this series- is definitely tested in this story as they start to find their own ways. I can’t wait for the rest of the stories to see what happens to them and their relationships with each other.

I highly recommend this story and any other story by Connilyn Cossette. Her Biblical fiction is the best!

Get a taste of what it might have been like to live in the time of the Apostle Paul. Ms. Hunt educates us with the customs of the first century as she weaves a tale of the woman who deals in purple dyes. As a follower of Yeshua, taught by Paul, Euodia lives in a pagan world and learns to share her faith, free her slaves and search for a slave girl, Sabina.

The ancient world was brought to life through the setting and well drawn characters. Widowed Euodia was a great example of a new Christian who was living out her faith by being a good mistress to her household and her employees. She went the extra mile to right a wrong to bring a blessing. Ariston, the servant, shows compassion and loyalty and is loving and brave. Just the right amount of intrigue and romance.

An enlightening, faith filled story by an excellent wordsmith.
