TO LOVE A BEAST BY Karen Witemeyer, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

(A Christian Western Historical Romance Fairy Tale Retelling of Beauty & the Beast)
Once Upon a Time in Texas Series #1

PAULA'S REVIEW:

I love these fairytale-retellings with a Texas flair and this one is my favorite. It had me picturing the Disney version in my head with all the favorite characters. I liked the twist on the names like Mrs. Potter and Mr. Lightfoot. Mr. Griffen as the beast was just perfect!

The descriptions put me right in the story. The information about bookbinding was very interesting and the paintings by Everett Griffen were so mesmerizing. They showed Calista what was in his soul. Ms. Witemeyer wove the story into a tale of beauty and gave a clear spiritual lesson. We should be looking at the heart and not outward appearances. She also touched on being a friend and seeking forgiveness.

This is a sure winner and I hope more Texas-themed fairytales are in the works.

Beauty and the Beast in 1800's Texas.

Once known among New York's elite as the American Adonis, Everett Griffin now lives as a recluse in the wilds of Texas. The treachery of a former admirer left his face and his spirit riddled with scars, so he hides himself away, his only companions a trio of trusted servants and an oversized dog. Locals whisper of the beastly man who lives in the gloomy manor outside of town and his tendency to attack anyone who dares approach. Everett relishes his fearsome reputation and uses it as a shield to guard his privacy. Until a young woman as stubborn as she is beautiful infiltrates his sanctum and lays siege to his defenses.

When an injury to her father jeopardizes the family's book binding business, Callista Rosenfeld determines to fulfill the contract herself, and no insufferable client or woman-eating dog will deter her. Finding unlikely allies among Mr. Griffin's staff, Callista secures her position and sets to work transforming the manor's remarkable library. Her employer transforms as well, his ill-tempered growls subsiding to reveal a considerate, intellectual nature. The Hope of Cheyenne Book #1: A Western Christian Historical Romance Series Set in Frontier Cheyenne, Wyoming

PAULA'S REVIEW:

This is one of those stories that teaches you on several levels. The author tells historical facts in an interesting and engaging way, and she reveals spiritual truths unfolding naturally as her characters live and grow in their faith.

The story takes place in Cheyenne, Wyoming during the horrible winter of 1888 that took many lives and livelihood when temperatures plummeted.

Micah has lost his father and on a neighboring ranch Charlotte has lost her father and brother. Charlotte and her mother are left to run their ranch by themselves.

Charlotte has loved Micah for a very long time echoing the constant love that God has for him. She tries to give him hope and something worth living for. “We have two choices. We either give up on God and walk away, or we trust Him no matter what happens to us.”

The themes gleaned were: things change but God stays the same. He is the solid rock. And my favorite verses crop up yet again. Romans 8:38 & 39. Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

This was a joy to read with real substance. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

The Jewels of Kalispell Book #3: A Christian Historical Romance Series
by Bestselling Authors set in Montana with Mystery and Intrigue

PAULA'S REVIEW:
I loved returning to Kalispell, Montana, and 1900, for the third installment of this series. This could be subtitled: Marvella makes match number three, because Marvella Ashbury, the judge’s wife, has a romantic heart and wants to see a second chance for Johanna and Parker.

Johanna and Parker have a history which turned out to be disappointing. A widow now, Johanna has invested in a hat shop and is caring for her daughter and father. But soon things get to be too much to handle. Enter Parker, who has returned from a career as a famous actor, and James, her brother-in-law, who has a nefarious reason to want to wed Johanna.

The love is still there between Johanna and Parker and they both want to honor God however, there are those who are plotting against them.

Full of interesting historical details, fascinating characters, complex family dynamics and with danger lurking, this book kept me turning pages until the very satisfying conclusion.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Mail order bride Ivy Cregg has escaped being forced into marriage by her gambler father. She heads west to Lincoln, Nebraska to wed rich rancher Slade Pendleton. They agree on a month to get to know each other before the wedding. Ivy teaches school and learns about being a ranch wife from neighbor Dinah who became a friend. Ivy and Slade want what is best and seek God for the answers.

I liked the way the author showed Ivy interacting with the students and how Slade was a good and fair boss and learned from his mistakes.

The story was a good look at life out west after the Civil War and got very exciting when Ivy was kidnapped. There was a slow build romance and a happily ever after.

For fans of Historical Christian Fiction and a feel-good story with strong faith thread.

The Hope of Cheyenne Book #1:
A Western Christian Historical Romance Series
Set in Frontier Cheyenne, Wyoming

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
This novel takes place in Cheyenne Wyoming winter of 1886 starting with what's called “the great die-up”—horrible blizzard conditions and well below sub zero temps that took the lives of many cattle, farm animals and men. Nobody was prepared for how bad it was in the end! Charlotte Aldrich and her mom Lucille lost both their husband/father and brother/son due to the freezing conditions. Barely able to survive, it's only by the grace of God they didn't lose everything. Lucille and Charlotte have a good head about them when it comes to improvising when necessary, running their ranch, and making a great team. They are also a good example of what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ in helping both neighbors and friends. Their faith is strong and a sturdy foundation for the grief they walk through. I admired both of these women!

Micah Hamilton and his dad are longtime close family friends and fellow ranchers who also lost much in the blizzard. One of the losses is Micah's dad ... he understandably goes through a great period of grief and isolates himself from the world. The Aldrich women help pull him out of that dark time and give him a reason to live again. Charlotte has long admired him and is secretly in love with him. Will it be enough to overshadow the losses he's had and bring light back into his life? And will his faith return to give him hope for a future God has for him?

I loved getting a glimpse of a piece of history that I didn't know about. This novel actually made me look up the great “die-up”; what I learned was heart-rending and devastating. I'm glad the author tackled the subject in her book, showing the grace of God even in the face of great loss and heartbreak. She did it with sensitivity and made it feel real through the lives of her characters. It's been a while since I've read a book by Peterson, but I always appreciate the authenticity a writer includes in creating a well-researched book. I'm sure this one is going to be a favorite among her readers! I loved this novel of grit, determination and never giving up hope in God no matter how dire the circumstances are.

Someday, I believe we'll understand, but for now we have two choices. We either give up on God and walk away, or we trust Him no matter what happens to us.~the words of Charlotte to Micah.

Now a villain wants to force her to become his wife. Her dad has other ideas like placing her under the protection of Caleb, the owner of the skittish horse. Good thing, Sallie is an animal whisperer. It turns out she can tame the human beast, Caleb, as well as horses and bulls.

This was a great story, based on Beauty and the Beast, and set in Montana in 1871. With believable characters, excitement, and a heroine, with a strong faith, this slant on the fairytale boasts a huge library that catches the interest of Sallie.

CLOAKED IN BEAUTY by Karen Witemeyer, Reviewed by Winnie and Rebecca

WINNIE'S REVIEW:

Karen Witemeyer’s book, Cloaked in Beauty, is the last in her Texas Ever After series that are nods to well-known fairy tales. It’s been such fun to see what Witemeyer came up with for these re-tellings. I loved the first two books, Fairest of Heart and If the Boot Fits, but I think this one was my favorite. It’s loosely based on Little Red Riding Hood, but the wolf is a hero along with a handsome Pinkerton agent. It stars Scarlett Radcliffe, alias Letty Hood, and her swoony rescuer, Philip Carmichael.

“He didn’t have the luxury of giving in to weariness or discouragement. God didn’t call a man to a task only to stand back and let him fail. He’d provide what was needed when the time was right.”

To protect her from her evil uncle who is trying to kill her to get her inheritance, five-year-old Letty is sent with her grandmother to a hidden location until she turns 21. Philip is tasked with finding her and bringing her back to her mother a few days before her 21st birthday when her inheritance can be claimed. Letty and Philip are both such fantastic and endearing characters. I loved their courage, ingenuity, and compassion. Philip’s thoughts were humorous and lent additional fun and comic relief to the story. The stellar cast of secondary characters is also outstanding, especially Rusty the wolf and Grandmother Flora.

With plenty of suspense, action, humor, and romance, this tale has something for everyone. The seamless addition of a faith thread adds depth and inspiration.

“It might be time to walk through the valley of the shadow of death, but she need not fear the evil stalking her, for her Shepherd was with her. Along with her Pinkerton. She’d trust them both to see her through whatever came.”

Witemeyer is a master storyteller who excels in creating fascinating characters and plopping them down in imaginative situations. She then proceeds to extract them from their dire circumstances and bring them to a happy ending. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to what she comes up with next.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:
"How depraved did one have to be to want to kill a child?"

Pinkerton agent Philip Carmichael has been tasked with one objective, find Texas heiress Scarlett Radcliffe, who for her own protection was tucked into obscurity in hopes that she would live to reach her twenty-first birthday and thus be able to claim her inheritance. Philip immediately goes to work using his knowledge and experience as a seasoned investigator to locate the young woman. However, finding her was just the beginning of a journey that would . . . perhaps, last a lifetime?

For the most part Letty Hood had been content to live completely on the fringes of civilization with only her beloved grandmother and a trusted pet wolf named Rusty (yes, you read that correctly, a pet wolf) for companionship When the day finally arrives (in the form of a handsome cowboy, but who's noticing?) for Letty's return to the world to which she was born, Letty courageously puts her life into Philip Carmichael's very capable hands (don't think about his hands!), convinces him that Rusty goes wherever she goes, and begins proving herself to be a very hard-working, low maintenance, and quite valuable (not a thing to do with her money) traveling companion.

Perhaps you are already predicting where this story is headed; after all, fairy tales always include a happily-ever-after featuring a beautiful lady and a handsome (there's that word again!) hero. So. . . what could possibly go wrong?

Enjoy this light-hearted, very romantic (close-proximity on steroi
ds!) with several dashes of edge-of-your-seat-drama story, where faith and family rise to the occasion!

*I purchased this book and was under no obligation to provide a positive review. 3.5 stars

Texas Ever After Series: A Christian Western
Historical Romance Fairy Tale Retelling of Little Red Riding Hood and Sleeping Beauty

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
Karen Witemeyer is one of my all-time favorite historical Christian fiction writers. So with this in mind and knowing I was in for a treat, I jumped at the chance to read Cloaked in Beauty.

If you are a fan of Little Red Riding Hood, I think you will get a kick out of Witemeyer’s take on this Fairy Tale. The nods to the original tale and the author's twists on the story was a whole lot of fun to read! I think I have to say my favorite character is Rusty, Letty Hood’s red wolf. His personality certainly added a great mix to the story and his devotion to Letty was admirable. Of course, the human characters are just as great! Philip and Letty grew quite close as danger surrounded them while traveling many days to get back to her mother’s after being in hiding for fifteen years. I enjoyed watching them work together and greatly anticipated the moment they fell in love. Of course, there’s many obstacles along the way to keep the reader turning pages and anticipating that fairy tale ending of living happily-ever-after!

What a great story to get lost in and characters to cheer for! The strong faith thread ties this all up in a neat bow for me. I’m definitely putting the other two novels in the Texas Ever After series on my must-read pile…they are not to be missed in my book (pun intended)!

PAULA'S REVIEW:
“There is no problem bigger than God. Remember that.”

A wonderfully creative retelling of Little Red Riding Hood with a Texas twist.

Letty Hood/ Scarlet Radcliff, with her grandmother, is in hiding from her Uncle Drake aka The Dragon. But in this story, the wolf is a pet and protects her. Enter our hero, Philip Carmichael, a Pinkerton Agent, tracking Letty who is very well hidden. As her birthday grows closer--so does danger. Uncle Drake does not want her to reach her 21st birthday when she gains controlling interest in the company her father left to her. Drake wants it all!

Clever, exciting, complicated story with a solid faith message that showcases honorable Philip championing Letty. “She need not fear the evil stalking her, for her Shepherd was with her. Along with her Pinkerton. She would trust them both to see her through whatever came.”

I am really enjoying these fairy tale re-imaginings from a talented author.

THE COWBOY'S CHRISTMAS TREASURES by Jill Kemerer, Reviewed by Trixi and Winnie #ReleaseDay

An Uplifting Inspirational Romance (Wyoming Legacies Book 4)

TRIXI'S REVIEW:
God, You've forgiven me. It doesn't change my stupid choices or the mistakes I've made, but I don't have to keep punishing myself anymore. I'm ready to move on. Please help me. ~Dean; page 168

I really love reading Jill Kemerer's stories because they always have a lot of heart in them! I enjoy her characters, because they deal with real-life issues that keep them back from moving past hurts, mistakes or missteps of their pasts. It encourages me and reminds me of times when God has helped me in these areas as well.

Both Dean and Brooke have to overcome some pretty scary fears that hold them back from a brighter future God has in store for them. Their path isn't easy towards healing, but together they can face them and help each other. I really liked how they began to open up to each other about their fears and insecurities. I think that helped strengthen the bond of friendship that led to a happily-ever-after. And those girls of Brooks—Alice and Megan—just added an extra sweet layer to make this story even better! Their bubbly personalities and little girl giggles made me smile every time. There wasn't anything I didn't like about this book, it had it all for me ... love, laughter, family ties, faith and plenty of heart-to-heart talks that made Dean and Brook more real to me.

Lastly, I did read the previous book in this series United by the Twins so it was great to revisit Marc and Reagan and catch up with their lives! You can totally read this as a stand alone, of course, I just love to read each book in a series because I like to see what the characters are up to.

If you're looking for a heartwarming story full of faith, cute twin girls, strong family bonds and ending in a sweet happily-ever-after, then look no further!

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
It was so enjoyable to return to Jill Kemerer’s small-town Wyoming setting for another charming and delightful story, The Cowboy’s Christmas Treasures. Kemerer is a master at creating realistically-flawed, relatable, and endearing characters. This book stars Dean McCaffrey who returns to help with the family construction business after his dad had a heart-attack. Brooke Dewitt is a widow with twin toddlers, and she needs her house wheelchair accessible in case she has future health problems. I enjoyed the interaction between Dean and Brooke, along with the adorable twin girls, when Dean steps in to complete the remodeling of her home.

“Our fears don’t necessarily reflect reality.”

It was uplifting to see Dean and Brooke help each other face their fears. I loved the small-town spirit of compassion and people stepping in to help each other. This is a faith-filled, inspiring tale that will put a smile on your face. Themes of faith, family, and hope make it a wonderful Christmas story that can be read any time of the year.

INTO THE SUNSET by Mary Connealy, Reviewed by Winnie and Rebecca

A WESTERN LIGHT #3
WINNIE'S REVIEW:
Mary Connealy’s books are always loads of fun, and this one showcases her signature humor and wit. Into the Sunset is the last book in her A Western Light series and wraps up the threads of the series. Set in Idaho and Wyoming in the 1870s, it brings Ginny face-to-face with her abusive husband. With the help of her friends, she sets out on a journey to prove her sanity.

“You did a terrible job picking a husband, Ginny.”

Maeve O’Toole and Dakota Harlan are also deeply involved in this book, and I enjoyed seeing their relationship change and evolve. It was such a treat to spend some time with the characters from the first two books. I suppose you could read this book on its own, but I would recommend reading the first two books first to get all the background story.

Connealy’s a master at creating quirky, engaging characters and plopping them down in creative, intriguing plots. She then begins to extricate them from their problems and circumstances in amusing and unexpected ways. I always enjoy her books and heartily recommend them to those who like clean and wholesome historical fiction.

REBECCA'S REVIEW:

"  . . . she thought of something her ma used to say: 'A woman's work is never done.'"

The time had come. Ginny Rutledge was leaving her secluded Hidden Canyon home to pursue being declared legally sane in order to escape the perpetual threat of being sent back to the Horecroft Insane Asylum by her tyrannical husband. Thaddeus Rutledge's influence had a long reach and his financial decline made his wife's wealth a valuable asset, prompting Ginny's family and friends to accompany her for the purpose of moral support and protection while they waited for her case to be heard.

Joining the group was Dakota Harlan, former wagon train master, and Mauve O'Toole . . . who was not only anxious to leave home for awhile, but whose prowess with young children would benefit Ginny's young grandchildren  . . . Dakota and Mauve had always been like "fire and ice", but could this joint endeavor produce a gentle thawing? Dakota had long ignored his attraction to the feisty redhead, knowing that his own secrets could bring danger to her front door . . . but not on this trip, right?

Readers will no doubt enjoy the core elements of this story; Ginny seeking freedom from her past, Mauve being forced to examine her feelings for Dakota during their close proximity, while Dakota comes face to face with his worst nightmare. However, the character list is extensive, the scenes changes are fairly abrupt and cameo appearances from previous novels take a minute or two or three to sink in . . . but you know what? It all comes together in the end.

"They'd traveled and they'd settled . . . And now, finally, they'd all followed the western light into the sunset."

The Heart of Cheyenne Book #3:
A Christian Western Historical Romance Book

Another treasure about the old west from the pen of Tracie Peterson. I appreciate the research that was evident in this story about the early days of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The town is starting to grow as Laura arrives to reunite with her father after so many years apart. She has a strong faith even though she has been through difficulties.

“My faith was all that got me through. Knowing that God was there and would never leave me was everything I longed for because everyone else had gone.”

I always respect how the author weaves the Gospel into her stories and depicts characters with strong Christian values. But she does also show how Will Porter could be tested in his faith so that he could grow stronger in the Lord. I especially liked the use of the two greatest commandments and how they apply to all Christians: Loving God and loving your neighbor.

The story was well crafted with danger, mystery, romance, and a few surprises. This was an enjoyable conclusion to the series.

INTO THE SUNSET by Mary Connealy, Reviewed by Paula Shreckhise #ReleaseDay

A Western Light Book #3: (A Historical Western Romance Set in 1800's Cheyenne, Wyoming)

For a good old fashioned western story, you cannot go wrong with Into The Sunset. The conclusion of this series sees a resolution to the problem of Ginny confronting her husband who had her unjustly committed to an insane asylum.

Lots of danger and excitement surround the group of friends as they seek to prove Ginny sane by traveling to Cheyenne, Wyoming for a trial. Dakota, a former wagon train master, is being stalked by a man out for revenge. Maeve tags along to help care for the children in the group. Dakota and Maeve have a shaky past, so all is not smooth in that respect either.

An appealing set of folks and interesting facts about the laws of the old west had me turning pages. The characters were flawed but honest in their actions and their faith was shown authentically. The themes of repentance, forgiveness and trusting God were prevalent. In the romance between Maeve and Dakota there is substantial growth and eventual maturity.

Ms. Connealy has another winner in this series set in the 1870s old west.

TEXAS FORSAKEN by Sherry Shindelar, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

LONE STAR REDEMPTION series #1

"You might as well put a bullet in me. You stole my husband's life. My child will never know her father . . . I want no part of your settlements and civilization."

Eyes-Like-Sky may have not wanted the shelter and protection that U. S. Calvary Captain Garret Ramsey was offering, but she had her infant daughter, Little Star, to consider. Having lived with the Comanche tribe for seven years following her initial captivity, she had truly loved her warrior husband and was not at all eager or willing to return to the name Maggie Logan or all that it represented. Admittedly she and the Captain Ramsey had bonded in a way that she never expected; he made her feel safe.

When Eyes-Like-Sky's overbearing family member arrives at the fort prepared to whisk her away, she and Garret force themselves to make a life-changing decision, "for better and for worse" . . . the question being, could the ruse possibly work? Eyes-Like-Sky had very little of her heart left to love again and Garret deserved better.

"Little Star needs you, Sky. And so do I  . . . "

Integrating a wide span of historical and cross-cultural particulars, the author provides readers with a birds-eye view of what Texas could have been like in the 1860's when battles were fought between enemies that were seen and ideologies that remained unseen, nevertheless managing to alter the entire fabric of the country at that time . . . placing Garret and Eyes-Like-Sky irrevocably in the middle.

Enjoy this epic journey of love and loss, faith and doubt, triumph and tragedy . . . eventually rewarding this unlikely pairing with heart and . . . home.

The man who destroyed her life may be the only one who can save it.

Seven years ago, Maggie Logan (Eyes-Like-Sky) lost everything she knew when a raid on a wagon train tore her from her family. As the memories of her past faded to nothing more than vague shadows, Maggie adapted—marrying a Comanche warrior, having a baby, and rebuilding her life. But in one terrible battle, the U.S. Cavalry destroys that life, and she is taken captive again, this time by those who call themselves her people. Forced into a world she wants nothing to do with, Eyes-Like-Sky’s only hope of protecting her child may be an engagement to the man who killed her husband.

Enrolled in West Point to escape his overbearing father, Captain Garret Ramsey has graduated and finds himself assigned to the Texas frontier, witnessing the brutal Indian War in which both sides commit atrocities. Plagued by guilt for his own role, Garret seeks redemption by taking responsibility for the woman he widowed and her baby. Though he is determined to do whatever it takes to protect them, is he willing to risk everything for a woman whose heart is buried in a grave? Or is there hope she might heal to love once more?

ROCKY MOUNTAIN JOURNEY by Misty M. Beller, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Rocky Mountain Journey (Sisters of the Rockies Book #3):
(A Clean Historical Romance Series Set in Early 1800's Wyoming)
"The great God knows where they are. We ask Him to show us."

Life is indeed a journey, and for the past couple of years Faith Collins and her three sisters have shouldered a quest that their father left them to take; "Find Steps Right (a Peigan Blackfoot woman who had once saved his life) and return the beads (a string of beautiful crystal blue beads) to her". It had been his dying wish and Faith was determined that they would fulfill it.

Gathering evidence from Steps Right's son White Horse as to where his mother might have gone, Faith takes a bold step forward by finding a way to begin the ongoing search on her own. Unbeknownst to her sisters, she slips away from mutual friends, poses as a young cowboy and crosses paths with Grant Allen for the second time . . . the first being while she was hanging precariously off the side of a waterfall.

Fans of this series will love how nicely all of the loose details surrounding the Collins' sisters journey west finally fit together, but not without peril, especially for Faith. Grant is an unexpected blessing, although he is fighting deep internal battles regarding self-worth ("He already thinks you're worth everything, Worth His love, Worth His son dying . . . "), while Faith is challenged to experience what it really means to depend on someone other than herself; "Not you but Me".

Find a comfortable spot where you can enjoy every mile of this wonderful "Rocky Mountain Journey".
