Happy Positive Thinking Day!

by Jen AlLee

I enjoy those weird holidays that seem to inhabit every day of the year. For example, today is National Peanut Day. It is also Scooby Doo's birthday. (Rappy rithday to roo!) And, last but not least, it is Positive Thinking Day.

Positive Thinking Day. It sounds a little woo-woo and Pollyanna, doesn't it? But in reality, positive thinking is right in line with God's best for us. Check this out...

Rejoice always, pray without ceasing,
in everything give thanks;
for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NKJV

Rejoice always. That's pretty positive, isn't it? But it doesn't mean that God wants us to live in denial. Notice that it says "in everything give thanks." We're not told to give thanks to God for everything. We live in a fallen world. Things are going to come into our lives that are not God's best for us. But God always works His best in us, regardless of the situation.

In one of our recent posts, we were talking about doing chores that we didn't like. I believe it was Deb who shared that her grandmother taught her to take joy in doing the dishes, because it meant that they'd been blessed with food to eat. That's the kind of positive, thankful heart that God wants us to have.

Today, I'm thankful that I've been tied up trying to buy a short-sale house for the last ten months. You see, God just showed my family a better house. The house He has for us. But it wasn't available ten months ago. Apparently, we were a bit ahead of His timing, so He had to slow us down. And I'm so thankful He did!

So how about you? On Positive Thinking Day, is there something others might consider a negative that you've found a blessing in? What are you thankful for? A loving family? A roof over your head? The fact that this post is unusually short? :+} Share with us and we'll rejoice together!

  1. Great post today, Jen. I'm so grateful for what God's doing in my life right now. I never wanted to be involved with home missions. Ever. But God's been showing up! He's showing me His strength in the middle of my own insufficiency. I can't do it. I know I can't. But He can and is, and I get to go along for the ride.

  2. "As a man thinks in his heart so shall he be"

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

Okay, too sleepy to look up the references. Faith is a form of positive thinking, not to be confused with trying to think things into existence by our own effort, but picturing a positive future based on good's promises to his beloved children.

Great post, Jen. Like you said, even when things are looking down, we can stay positive and have faith that God is working behind the scenes with our best interests at heart.

  3. Well, I'm feeling good just knowing it's also National Peanut Day! Thanks Jen!

My idea is that nothing rough lasts forever. "this too shall pass"
As I said on Saturday, I remember thinking on 9/11 that I'd never be able to laugh again. But God didn't wire us that way. Somehow we push off the oppression of pain, loss, and life's burdens, and somehow find joy in the smallest thing.

Weeping may endure for a night, but a shout of joy comes in the morning.

  4. Hey there, ladies. Sorry I've been so quiet today. I spent a lot of time running around responding to the blessing of real estate... yes, it looks like we are FINALLY buying a house. The short-sale that took 10 months is over. We found a great house a week ago that's a traditional, old-fashion, by-seller-type sale. And today I signed all the loan papers. If all goes according to plan, we'll close escrow in mid-October. God is soooooo good!

  5. Loved the post, Jen.

I've been told I'm a positive thinker. I like that. I also like detour signs because they force me to go someplace I've never been and usually don't have time to experience.

Congrats on your new house. I'll be praying this one goes through.

    Anita Mae.

Девочки, как вы думаете, можно во время беременности пантовые ванны применять? Вообще-то я давно про них слышала. Мол чудеса творят, хочу испробовать ОЧЕНЬ_ОЧЕНЬ, но жду ребенк

  8. Happy Belated Positive Thinking Day! And Happy Belated Scooby Doo's Bday!

I am so thankful God blessed me with a house even though it needed a new roof that put us in the proverbial poor house. And I that God blessed me with a house even though the a/c needed repair at the exact same time.

More than anything else - I am thankful to have a relationship with a Lord who gives me hope and strength in times of difficulty.
