ELINOR by Shannon McNear, Reviewed by Rebecca Maney

Daughters of the Lost Colony #1

"If aught happened to you, Elinor, how could we ever face Ananias? Or God forbid, your father, once he returns?"

One of history's greatest mysteries.(*a nod to the History Channel) What happened to the colonists under the leadership of John White who once populated the island of Roanoke, off the coast of North Carolina, all those years ago? What they left behind . . . precious little, leaving most to wonder whether or not they left of their own volition to settle nearby once it became necessary. Drowning. Starvation. Disease. Peaceful dispersal. Or, taken captive by warring Native American factions? We'll never really know for sure, will we?
With calculated precision, the author utilizes bits and pieces of the historical record to flesh out her characters; aligning historical and fictional figures alongside one another, carefully penning a picture of those whose courage prompted them to exchange the familiar shores of England for foreign, uncharted territory in the New World. Understandably, this narrative leans heavily on documented accounts which may dampen readers' enthusiasm early on, however . . . when the story reaches the point where it becomes necessary to weave the threads of what might have happened into the lives of those whom we can only hope and pray survived, the adventure of the "what ifs" begin.

"Thus committing the relief of my discomfortable company the planters in Virginia, to the merciful help of the Almighty, whom I most humbly beseech to help and comfort them, according to His most holy will and their good desire . . ." - John White, 1593

Escape into a riveting story based on the mystery of the Lost Colony of Roanoke.

Author Shannon McNear portrays history with vivid authenticity.

In 1587, Elinor White Dare sailed from England heavy with her first child but full of hopes. Her father, a renowned artist and experienced traveler, has convinced her and her bricklayer husband Ananias to make the journey to the New World. Land, they are promised, more goodly and beautiful than they can ever imagine. But nothing goes as planned from landing at the wrong location, to facing starvation, to the endless wait for help to arrive. And, beyond her comprehension, Elinor finds herself utterly alone. . . .
The colony at Roanoke disappeared into the shadows of history. But, what if one survived to leave a lasting legacy?
