WINNIE'S REVIEW:
Talented author Sarah Monzon’s contemporary rom-com Bookmarked for Love is entertaining and delightful. I enjoyed the witty and comfortable banter between the main characters, children’s librarian Martha Aldridge and Julien King, the heir to a publishing empire. When Martha approaches Julien about a donation to save her children’s program at the small library she works at, he agrees if she’ll help him try to save the children’s imprint at his company.

I was impressed how the author tackled some seldom-used tropes in her story—middle-aged main characters with age gap, plus-sized heroine, different social levels, etc.—and blended them together to add interesting elements to the tale. It was fun to see Martha and Julien accept their different strengths and life circumstances and be comfortable with each other.

With many laugh-out-loud moments and a bunch of chuckles and snorts, this story kept me turning the pages. This is the last book in Monzon’s Checking Out Love series but can be read as a standalone without losing much backstory.

(Historical Southern World War II Novel set in Georgia and Inspired by True Events with Themes of Foster and Adoption)

PAULA'S REVIEW:
This debut had so much heart. It was an emotional and realistic story. 

"Home was a soft place to land , where you were loved, safe and free. It was your own tilled row where your roots could grow deep and your branches could spread wide, where others could rest in your shade until they had land of their own.” 

With a resilient heroine and a brave, caring hero, this story showed that hope could prevail and love could be shown in adversity. 

Cora offered hope and stability in the midst of turmoil and upheaval and was the catalyst for bringing a community together to do a great service.  

This story had a strong representation of care for others, a bit of danger, and a believable romance. It was well-researched and showed that there is hope for the future even though you are uncertain of the changing circumstances.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Jade Morrow has made a career as an author writing books that reimagine lives of notable people. As her life takes an unexpected turn, she is living reality as she never reimagined it. 

I liked the way the story of Jade’s life was interspersed with excerpts from her novels of famous people. It takes a talented author to basically write several books in one. Ms. Chapman took me into the life of Jade Morrow and made me want to know more about her and see how her relationships progressed. 

An accidental fall was the catalyst for Jade to take a closer look at her life, circumstances, and the motivations that put her on the path that she had chosen and to make healthier lifestyle choices from then on. 

This beautifully written book had me wanting to explore the books mentioned and maybe wishing for there to be a real Jade Morrow so I could read all of her reimagined stories. 

The faith thread was underlying but you could tell that Daniel, Virginia and a few other characters were mature in their faith journey. 

The story is certainly a thought provoking look at how different people were not above reimagining their lives and prospered in doing so.

Fearing for his safety, Lizzy Haney makes the courageous decision to mail her younger brother by rail out of Holden's Gap and to a family friend in Knoxville, Tennessee. Due to the fact that their mean, vicious father was continuously threatening River's life, the nine year old was becoming increasingly vulnerable; all due to his eyes. River had the most astounding crystal green eyes that looked beneath the surface of a person and straight into their soul, and it was no secret that Lizzy's father had a mammoth amount of rot in his soul.

"If it isn't Martha Aldridge all grown up."

It had taken children's librarian Martha Aldridge an enormous amount of courage to walk through the the doors of King Publishing, but after all, it was for the children. Her children. Well, not her children exactly, but Little Creek, Tennessee's children, who benefited greatly from the creative programming provided by their small town library. Unfortunately, at this point only a generous donation could save what was so dear to her heart. Thus the reason for Martha's visit to the one person within reach who had the means to gift a substantial amount of money, a man who had single-handedly crushed her dreams once upon a time. Except it wasn't the patriarch of the company who sat across the desk, it was his son.

Julien King doesn't quite know what to do with Martha's bold request, until he considers how her knowledge of children's literature might help him to revitalize their children's imprint, Squire. If she would agree to a short term contract, surely they could find a manuscript that would prove his prowess as a competent leader of his family's publishing house. It would mean spending quite a bit of time with Martha, but somehow that idea sounded rather appealing at the moment. First flights, and all.

This book has an infectious charm about it, pulsating with appealing characters and humorous scenarios, the story is also filled with genuine, honest and often hard conversations about everything from a little girl in pigtails to dashed dreams and high expectations. It's about books! And the girl next door! And eventually, I couldn't love you more!

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Sassy and cute, this rom-com had me laughing a lot. I loved the literary references and the plus-sized heroine who had a head on her shoulders. I enjoyed the interaction between Julien and Martha. I did not find that the age difference detracted from the story. The friends from the library were loyal and supportive. Martha was a sweet character who cared so much about what the library could offer to children. She seemed like the perfect librarian for children. 

I like the way the characters were quirky but lived out their faith, relying on God to help them in the everyday, with problems large and small. It was very interesting to learn a bit about the publishing industry and conferences where queries were made. 

This book rounds out the series quite nicely with lots of heart and comedy.

With her brother Evan on his way to New York, Evangeline is traveling to Manitowish Waters, Wisconsin with their childhood friend Deputy Gideon Lundgren for the Christmas Holidays. But a robbery and snow blocking the train tracks, makes for an interesting journey.

This story had me shivering at the descriptions of the snowbound train and the icy trek to the next station while the snow blew in earnest. Gideon took responsibility to see Eva safely to her destination, try to discover who the robber was, and herd train passengers to a warm, dry place. 

I appreciate the attention to detail and the atmosphere depicted in the story. Themes of trust, being guided by God, forgiveness, and justice were aptly shown. With a dose of danger and a sweet romance, this was an engaging, wintery story.

THE BACHELOR SPY by Pepper Basham, Reviewed by Winnie Thomas

WINNIE'S REVIEW:
"Beg your pardon, but Lady Astley does have a keen ability to attract. . . Curious happenings.”

Pepper Basham’s signature wit and humor shine throughout this final book in the Freddie and Grace Mystery series. It was entertaining to see what shenanigans and adventures Grace was involved in this time around. Set in England in 1915 against the background of WWI, The Bachelor Spy stars some of the characters from previous books in the series. It could possibly be read as a standalone book, but I feel it’s best to read the books in order, to get all the back story.

When Grace and Freddie’s estate, Havensbrooke Hall, is turned into a hospital for convalescing soldiers, Grace finds herself running the estate while Freddie is involved in the war effort. Freddie’s cousin, Stephen Blake, travels to Havensbrooke incognito in search of a German spy. Mayhem and mysteries ensue, and Grace is once again in her element as she works with Blake to figure out what’s going on at Havensbrooke.

“Oh, happy day! It had been far too long since she’d been part of a proper mystery.”

I enjoyed Grace’s plucky and spontaneous personality and her love of solving mysteries. It was fun to see some of the characters from previous books in the series playing a part in this tale. This is an entertaining and amusing story filled with mystery and romance.

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Riveting suspense as Paradise and brother Drew try to figure out the decades long mystery of who killed their parents. As the romance plays out for Blake and Paradise, they must hold onto their faith when trouble follows them and endangers the wildlife sanctuary yet again.
 

The wrap up to the series was exciting and full of surprises. I liked the interaction between Paradise and Blake’s family. The memories keep unfolding for Paradise as she remembers what happened years ago. But if the principal players of that fateful night are gone, who is behind the attempts on her life? Who does not want the truth to come out? This bad guy was really hard to figure out.
 

Along with the mystery, there are interesting facts about the animals at the sanctuary. I liked that the main characters prayed about each obstacle that came across and chose to leave the outcome to God. Also, I appreciated the crossover characters in other series by this talented author.

An Arranged-Marriage Regency Romance

PAULA'S REVIEW:
Captivating from page one, I was fascinated by the premise of Kitty seemingly kidnapped from her life in India to find herself secluded in the English countryside. With an arranged marriage in the near future, she feels manipulated and wants nothing to do with Sebastian. She has no fond memories of the one time she met him when they were younger. 

Sebastian travels to England from India where he is being groomed to oversee the vast East India Company. He too feel manipulated by his grandfather. After the marriage of convenience takes place, Kitty and Sebastian join forces to uncover mysteries that were long in the making. 

I felt the wariness of the characters and loved the slowly developing romance. The story was very atmospheric from the ballrooms of England to the sultry sumptuousness of India. I was also intrigued by the history revealed about the East India Company as well as facts about William Wilberforce and William Carey. This author has a winning way of incorporating history into an impressive story. I enjoyed the facts about astronomy and several women who were ahead of their time in scientific knowledge. 

Kitty and Sebastian had a strong faith and that played a part in how they perceived the obstacles they came across. This journey back in time was expertly portrayed by a talented author who used careful research to write an exceptional novel.

Before her departure, Cairstin's dying father made her promise to marry as soon as possible, thinking that it was the only sure means to keep Cairstin's mother and sister out of the poorhouse upon his death. If only it was that simple, but there were some who thought that it was.

Soon after her move, Cairstin's coworkers invite her to attend a recently formed church in Penrith, where she draws the attention of not only the pastor but one of his deacons, a local bank clerk, who seems almost frantic to rapidly deepen his acquaintance with Cairstin. Granted, this story moves very slowly at first with its stiff formalities and curious incidents, only to accelerate into a frenzy of misfortunes for a very lovely young lady who becomes separated from everyone who has her best interests in mind. Just as I was beginning to question whether or not this book was actually a mystery, it became one, holding my attention through the very last page.

JGH Investigations might appear a bit unconventional, but they make up for lagging aesthetics with their iron clad determination to track down every lead. Their current assignment hits extremely close to heart and home, for Holly's best friend Jace has requested that she and Jordan find out what really happened to Jace's brother Scott, who remains in a coma after a vicious beating. Unfortunately, Jace's mother continues to pursue legal action to end life support, literally burying any evidence related to the attack. Something isn't adding up. (Or being covered up?)

As the layers of the evening in question begin to unravel, the two investigators manage to track down leads that were either missed or ignored, directing their focus towards questionable characters, reluctant witnesses, dead bodies; resulting in multiple attempts on their lives. What in the world had Scott Walker been into, and how in the world is Holly going to explain it all to Jace? (If she has breath to tell the story.)

With her signature humor and deft plotting skills, (not to mention designing one of the most iconic personalities in contemporary suspense) this author has penned yet another wonderful blend of character and story, displaying deep spiritual connotations and unexpected outcomes.
