The Merchant's Daughter: An Inkie Book Recommendation

The Merchant's Daughter

Having thoroughly enjoyed Melanie Dickerson's debut novel, "The Healer's Apprentice," news of her second book release last November had me putting "The Merchant's Daughter" on my MUST READ list.

Yesterday afternoon, with snow piling up outside and no one else at home (for once), I snuggled into my recliner to start  Dickerson's latest fairy tale inspired story.

Several hours later... I'd read the whole thing. All in one sitting. That wasn't my plan, of course. I just wanted to start reading it, and then I planned to exercise, and take a shower, and clean my house, and ... yeah. Ever happen to you?

I'm not a fan of preachy inspirational fiction, so for me to say the spiritual arc was my favorite aspect of the story is really saying something. I love Dickerson's ability to weave faith and spirituality and God's word into her plot and characters without resorting to cut-and-paste Scripture quotes or characters whose spiritual awareness is only demonstrated in church attendance or bedtime prayers.

Although the book is "loosely based" on Beauty and the Beast, it isn't a copycat tale. Don't go into it looking for comparisons or you'll miss out on the freshness of Dickerson's story.

"The Merchant's Daughter" is available at:
Amazon
Christianbook
Zondervan
Barnes & Noble

  2. Yes, this looks like another great book from Melanie.

Her book trailers are very dramatic, aren't they? Good to see. :)

    Thanks, Niki.

  3. Yep, Deb, I read it on Kindle on my iPhone, which I'm finding I like better than my 2nd generation Kindle.

Agreed, Anita! I tend to love book trailers anyway, but Melanie's are extra fabulous.

  6. Lovely review, Niki. And the peaceful afternoon reading while snow piled up sounds like heaven.

My husband and I were just talking about how we will never live long enough to read all the books we want. Still, having new ones to add to the TBR pile is so wonderful. Thanks for the recommendation.

  7. Suzie,
I'm so glad someone else got absorbed like I did!

    DeAnna,
It is challenging, isn't it? One of the things I like about GoodReads is being able to have a list somewhere of TBR books. Otherwise I'd forget.

  8. Mary,
Thank you! I hope you'll get a chance to pick this one up, it's worth it!

The snow... not my idea of heaven, but being able to curl up and read all afternoon, that'll do anyday!

    Thanks for stopping by!

  10. Why do we hardly ever get decent amounts of snow in this specific part of Sussex? Too close to the sea perhaps?

  12. Anna, I envy you your nearness to the sea!

Hope you can get to The Merchant's Daughter soon, it would be awesome to read it from your perspective on the setting, I'm sure.

    Thanks for commenting!

  13. Well they say you can never be anymore than 50 miles away from it anywhere in Britain. The benefit of being an island I guess.

I fear I shant be reading 'The Merchant's Daughter' for some time. I wanted to get The Healer's Apprentice if , but Amazon decided to put the price up the very same day:(
