Torin Monaghan has earned a place on my favorite heroes list. Although he is very competent and protective of his family, he is quiet, keeps to himself a lot of the time and tends to be more serious than others in his family. Because he is the oldest sibling, the others in his family look to him as a leader and steadying force. His passion for conservation has put him in the public eye and brought him to the attention of those high in the government.
“She’d not been aware of the steadiness that Torin brought until it was missing. Strange that the quiet one would have the loudest presence . . . “
Grace Thomas makes a wonderful heroine. I loved her compassion for others and her willingness to help anywhere she’s needed. Both Grace and Torin have wounds that need to be healed, and I enjoyed seeing them help each other heal and grow.
“Don’t settle for just anything because you’re afraid you’ll end up with nothing.”
Kraak is a very insightful author, and I love how she adds inspiration and depth to her stories. “God isn’t pushed away by our sharp edges. He draws even closer during those times when others are driven away.” “God doesn’t abandon his own. He doesn’t tire of us or grow weary with us. He goes with us into the valleys, and he camps with us on the mountains.” Courage, faith, love of family, and integrity are woven seamlessly through this story.
This book has a little of everything—suspense, intrigue, romance, and inspiration. I recommend it to those who enjoy well-written historical fiction. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author.

BackCover Blurb:
Unfulfilled dreams have left Grace Thomas vowing not to let her imagination roam wild again. Resigning herself to the goal of owning a dress shop, she accepts a position as a housekeeper at Monaghan Lumber Camp in order to earn funds. The plan is simple, easy, and safe. But Torin Monaghan is not. The reclusive brother who seems indifferent to her presence is ironically the one stirring up her imagination.
Torin Monaghan will not be deterred from his passion to preserve the beauty of nature. Even if it appears as if he’s going against his family. Even if the quirky and wistful seamstress invading his space is proving a distraction. To his frustration, Grace Thomas is not easily dismissed, and neither are the ways she’s opening his eyes to a different sort of beauty.
When past threats bring new trouble to Pine Creek, Torin and Grace must become vulnerable—to each other and their community—and through risk, discover that reality is more fulfilling than their dreams.

I somehow managed to not really meet Sondra at the CFRR in Cincinnati even though I knew how excited my travel buddy, Jessica Baker, was to meet her. I'm still bummed. So much to do during those events that an 'ahem' introvert misses by the need to conserve energy. Thanks so much for reviewing this one, Winnie! (Winnie who was my room-mate!!)
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to meet you! I was also conserving energy and a little overwhelmed, lol. I did get to meet Winnie and Jessica, and it was great!
