Feeling restless and needing a break from her busy veterinarian practice, Jessie leaves the city of Waikato, New Zealand to visit her good friend Hope in a remote rural village called Glenorchy. She misses wide open spaces and mountain fresh air of the Southern Alps! When an opportunity arises to work as the on-call vet for remote area farms, she feels the Lord has opened the door for a new life. The possibility for a chance at love could seal it for her when Mack shows his interest in the pretty vet. Will she have the courage to walk through?
I really enjoyed visiting New Zealand through the pages of this book! Much of what Patricia Snelling described I could picture in my mind, it too made me yearn for wide open spaces. I could also relate to Jessie in a lot of ways. She’s trying to make a new path in life where so many things are uncertain and some of the older farmers make her new career difficult. I can understand the discouragement she would feel and wanting to give up. One thing I admired about Jessie, is how she took everything to God in prayer! Asking for His guidance in all her decisions and wisdom in how to deal with the opposition from the farmers. She also had some great friends to talk to and encourage her along the way. I was, however, a bit disappointed that the relationship between her and Mack didn't develop more fully. I would have loved to see more depth and build-up to the romance. In spite of that, I enjoyed getting to know Mack. He's the kind of man I would want for my own daughter. Kindness, caring and respect are just a few of the qualities I saw in him.
All in all, this was a good story to get lost in! The characters were interesting, the setting was beautiful, the faith theme felt natural, and the ending was perfect. I enjoyed reading this book and I plan to go back and read “When Hope Went South” to get to know her friend Hope better.
